“You learn more from failing. I’ve learned more from the things I’ve done poorly in life, and how else do you know not to do them again?” Interviewed by Holly Baldacci
Editor-in-Chief
I think that the older I’ve gotten the more I see [God’s influence]. I think I see it more through my teaching, through my students, and through going through hard times and coming out on the other end of things. I think that I’m more sure than ever that God has a plan, and that when you stick to the plan, at the end of the day, a lot of things fall away, and what’s important is your core, and that’s what’s there. I would travel more, I think. I would see more of the world. I had kids when I was very young, and not that I would trade that for the world… I could go back and do a million things better with them, probably, but I think I would have spent more time before I started a family getting to know myself and traveling because I love to travel, and it just doesn’t happen a whole lot now in my life. You learn more from failing. I’ve learned more from the things I’ve done poorly in life, and how else do you know not to do them again? That’s the important part, is learning not to repeat the things that you failed in. I think differently toward students now because of my kids, because they’re so different. My home ideal was such a different range of personalities and stuff, so I think that’s probably made me a better teacher overall because I see kids for who they are, beyond labels or whatever, and into their interests. Being a biology teacher, I should be able to answer what the meaning of life is, right? Survive and reproduce. Survival
of the fittest. I think that’s up to everybody’s own interpretation, to be honest. I think you have to find your own meaning, and find what’s meaningful to you, and so some people might find that through their work, some people might find that through money, and some people might find it through relationships. If I had to answer it for me, I would say it’s definitely about relationships and people, making connections with people. I think that you should always strive to be a better person every day. I think that every day, try to do something meaningful and get better at it all the time. I think now my sister, probably, is one of my biggest [inspirations]. She is super successful, she’s like one of the top executives at GE, but is also just one of the most well-grounded people that I know. We were not at all alike when we were young, and now, we’re scarily alike in our habits, in our mannerisms, and stuff like that. I think she’s just a very good role model. My pet peeve, I would say, is laziness, and I guess that’s not really what I mean. Maybe complacency is a better word for it, and I could even say ignorance. I believe in everybody’s right to their own opinions and their own ideas, and I actually celebrate that difference. I think it’s important, as long as people have an intelligent argument. I get very annoyed when people are very shortsighted and ignorant. I can have an intelligent conversation or difference of opinion with anybody about anything and I’m okay with that, but it’s when people don’t see the whole picture [that annoys me].

“You can’t turn the clock back and what’s done is done, and you need to put it behind you and need to face the fact it happened and move on.”
Interviewed by Menley Urban
Photographer
The craziest thing I’ve probably ever done is when I was probably 15 or 16 years old, I found the traffic signal box open in the town I lived in. There was a switch inside that said manual, so I flipped it to manual and I started pushing the button and changing the traffic lights from red to green to yellow to red to green to yellow. I would go back to high school and do it over the right way. Apply myself, make the best of my time and, uh, get better grades so I would not regret the mistakes I made when I was in high school when I got older. Pizza, it’s my favorite food. I’d get pizza from all my favorite pizza places and eat them all in one meal. So you’d have Lou Malnati’s on one side of the table, you’d have some Dino’s over on the other side, a little Nick’s over here, you know, a little bit of all my favorite pizzas. Piece of this, piece of that. My greatest experience at Disneyland… Oh, the Tower of Terror, of course. My favorite ride. You know the lead up to it would scare the kids but the actual free falling and stuff is just awesome. I could go on that all day.
Great America had one that you would go forward, come back through, you’d end up going back through, then you’d end up going back up and somehow you got yourself turned around and you would come back backwards through. I don’t remember, it was a good long time ago I went on it, but I remember after I went on it I was kind of walking sideways for about 20 minutes because my equilibrium was all messed up because of this crazy roller coaster. Any super power… Oh, I’d want to be a mind reader. I want to be able to read people’s minds, because I like to know the truth. What else do I have that I like to watch… “Harry Potter” is a secret, but yeah. Cheap Trick. It’d be a cliché if I said the “Dream Police,” so I won’t say it. I DJed for years, so I love dance music, anything with a good beat.
(M. Urban) My favorite cartoon character is Scooby As far as the current things, I enjoy Doo. Afraid of things, but strong and fearless watching my kid grow up and watching in other times. the things she experiences on a regular basis and being part of that. A modern tool I wish I created would probably be, being the electronic geek I am, You can’t turn the clock back and would be the LED light bulb. I used to tinker what’s done is done, and you need to put around with electronic stuff. it behind you and need to face the fact it happened and move on.

“‘Never die easy’ - Walter Payton. I think this quote applies to me the most.”
Interviewed by Alvin Wong
Photographer six seconds. And then there was this other time I didn’t even ask my mom to cut off the crust when she made me a PB&J.
Okay, well there was this one time when the power went out while I was playing “My Little Pony Island Adventure.” That kind of scared me. But other than that, nothing else really gets to me.

Track and fishing. I think what I like most about them is that they are really great stress relievers for me. When I have a lot on my plate, or whatever, I can always have a good time fishing or throwing. It really helps get my mind off things.
My greatest achievements are probably when I placed as a top conference athlete in discus my sophomore
year and winning sectionals with the Huntley Fishing Team. After high school, I will attend the University of Toledo, Ohio, where I plan on getting my bachelor’s in biomedical engineering. [My heroes are] Mr. Styers because he’s the coolest and Kyle Sabie because, well, he’s kind of cute… My bucket list: hanging out with Mr. Styers outside of school (we’ll both be wearing jean shorts), beating Amanze Egekeze in a one-on-one pickup game on a Little Tikes basketball hoop, and getting a pizza from Domino’s handmade by Adam Urbanski himself. “Never die easy” - Walter Payton. I think this quote applies to me the most. It basically means live life to the fullest and always give 110 percent at all times. I loved it all. Everything about high school - Friday night football games, home basketball games, Homecoming - all of it. However, high school’s still not over for me. I am still looking forward to a lot of things. I can’t wait for track season and to
start fishing again. Prom should be a blast too. I really want to make my senior year count. Bittersweet. I’m excited to graduate, and yet sad as well. I know I’ll have a great time in college because I’ll be able to make lots of new friends and get to experience many new things, but at the same time, I know I’ll be sad because I’ll be leaving the high school I have been with for four years. I have lived in this district all my life and I have made some lifelong friends, friends I could never replace. Leaving them will be especially difficult, but hopefully I will still keep contact with them after high school. To next year’s seniors: I say go out and have fun. Do not miss out on anything. It’s your last year here so live it up. Ew, I hate freshmen… Just kidding. To the freshmen: I say don’t be nervous. I know it seems very different but high school is a great time and Huntley is a great place. Enjoy your time here while it lasts because before you know it, it’ll be your turn to graduate.

Kalee Brown, aspiring nurse
“I love having music, especially when I do have hard times. I always turn to that.” Interviewed by Jenny Bednarcyzk My favorite thing growing up was whenever I went out of town and was able to see sites and stuff, that was my fondest memory, like the first time I went to the Dells and when I went on a roller coaster for the first time, that was exciting. We would do the same activity that got the cousins really close. When we were younger, we would play tag and hide-andgo-seek and all those little games that children used to play, and it would be really exciting. If I could live anywhere in the world, I would live in Israel because I feel really safe there. Like you think of Israel, you think of “Oh my gosh, soldiers everywhere, like, war as soon as you’re 18, like, you don’t have a choice.” But actually, after going there in December, it was not like that at all. There were kids walking around by themselves. Sure, I saw soldiers here and there, but it was actually really the safest place to be, and I loved being there and how people just interact with each other. Like there were people on the street like hitchhiking and people weren’t afraid to pull over and say “Hey, do you need a ride? Where do you need to go?” Where, like, in America, you can’t do that. You would get killed. Living in Israel would also bring out my culture and my religion. It made me feel like home.
Photographer Having a support system really brings joy to my life because I like knowing that I can turn to anyone, like who are my friends or my family and they’re there no matter what. I love having music, especially when I do have hard times. I always turn to that. I love singing, that’s a big part of my life, and I feel like different songs can really change a mood, like when I am upset or if I am angry I can just turn on a happy-go-lucky song and just feel better. I love how my friends, my boyfriend, and my parents [help] through everything, like when I was diagnosed with depression, they were there no matter what, they understood finally, like, “ok, this is what is going on, this is what is wrong with her and that’s why she was always having mood swings and that’s why she was just not herself, because she had a chemical imbalance in her brain,” so its great having that support system. They always stuck by me. My dream job is to be a pediatric nurse, especially at Children’s Hospital with the children who have cancer because I
(J. Bednarcyzk)
know that I want to be a part of the nursing staff that is able to give kids hope, and have them keep thinking positive. I challenge myself a lot; I want to succeed. I don’t like anything to come easy.
and I felt like someone was there, and I would look and no one would be there, and I would have the sense like I was not alone and someone was actually listening. So I definitely felt that God was there with me, and I definitely do believe in God.
Yes, I do believe in God. When I went to Israel, I went to the Western Wall, and I was praying. It was a different experience. It was different than regular going to temple and praying, I actually felt a breeze,
The meaning of life to me is that you live it to the fullest, and you try to achieve every goal you have. You may have people come in and out of your life, and it will be hard, but there is a reason for everything.
Wayne Russell, family man
“I would like to do some more traveling. If I could, I would really like to go back to Ireland.” Interviewed by Alvin Wong
I never really thought about a bucket list because I really don’t like to think what I would do before I’m not around. But if I were to make one, one of the things on there would be to watch my granddaughter grow up.
Photographer
[If I had $1 million] I would donate some to charity, to what I hope would be for good causes, and I would also give some of it to my children. I would like to do some more traveling. If I could, I would really like to go back to Ireland. I visited there once and it was spectacular. I think traveling across the states would also be a cool experience. My wife wants to go to Alaska.
(A. Wong)
I love spending time with my family. I have three daughters, all in their 20s. One’s getting married in the fall. My wife’s an eighth grade teacher at another school district, and I have a two-and-a-half-yearold granddaughter with whom I visit every Tuesday. Just being around them brings joy
to my life. Sports. I play fantasy baseball, I am a big fan of Huntley athletics, and I guess you can say I am still a Cubs fan (even though they can be quite maddening sometimes).
There is a lot I wish I could change about the world. I would eliminate poverty and make the world cleaner, ecologically. I’d also wish that everyone in the world could be healthy, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. My philosophy on life is to look past people’s failures, deficiencies, and mistakes and accept them for who they are. As a good rule of thumb, you should always try to be nice to everyone.
Education in America is not broken, but it could certainly be a lot better. I think that with public education we worry too much about changing the way we do things, the way we teach and the way we standardize education. We are so caught up in trying to change the system that we do not realize that we are merely backtracking and making the same changes we already have. In my opinion, not everyone needs to go to college to be successful. I think that we, as a country, value college, in some cases, too much. You could become a plumber, a carpenter, or an electrician and still do just as well, if not better, as a person with a four-year degree. It is all about the work that you are willing to put in that determines whether or not you will be successful. My advice to the members of the graduating class is do the very best you can and accept challenges. Work hard but try to have fun also, just not too much fun. Whether it be college or work, enjoy what you are doing and do it well. Enjoy days off too. Moderation is always a good thing.

“If I could get a tattoo, I would get a black lion on my left shoulder, with bad*ss detail and everything.”
Interviewed by Kat Gorospe
A&E Editor can’t be shady. You have to have a sense of humor; if you can’t laugh then that’s just an ugly personality trait. No lying, and looks don’t matter too much if you got the right personality. You gotta be talkative. I can pretty much talk about anything, and if we can’t have a conversation, there’s gotta be something wrong with you. My favorite animal is a lion. They’re brave, courageous, don’t give a sh*t, just do what they please, and if you mess with one lion you mess with the whole pride. You know what I’m saying? The weirdest things I have ever eaten [were] cow tongue and intestines, camel, pig’s feet, snout and ears, lamb’s head and brain, and kangaroo jerky. (K. Gorospe)
All my family is from Italy. I’m an Italian citizen, and we go there once or twice a year. I speak fluent Italian, and I like pasta. I’ve been playing soccer for 14 years now. I grew up watching Juventus, all day. All I see is black and white, no shades of gray.

would be anything with Brad Pitt in it. I hate Brad Pitt. I don’t like him as an actor, I’d rather watch hair grow. If I could marry any celebrity, I wouldn’t marry one because they have too much baggage. But if I had to pick one, it would be Kate Upton because she has a great personality. If I could get a tattoo, I would get a black lion on my left shoulder, with bad*ss detail and everything. If I could give my younger self-advice, I would say, “Don’t believe everything people say. Believe only half of what you see, and nothing of what you hear.” If I could change anything, I would change racism because I think society works better as a whole and when we work together. Our differences unite us at the end of the day. My dream job is to be a spacemanlawyer-cowboy. The work shifts would be 2:00 to 7:00: lawyer, 7:00 to 11:00 at night: cowboy, 12:00 to 6:00 a.m.: astronaut. You never sleep when you’re a cowboy-astronaut-lawyer.

“I think I have the ability to see things like ghosts because I was born premature.”
Interviewed by Angelica Cataldo

I love to read, but I love to watch movies, too. Mainly sci-fi and horror. I like to listen to music, mainly electronic dance. My favorite artist is Calvin Harris. I once tried to produce my own mix and it turned out really bad, oh my gosh. That’s why I stick to writing.
If I had one million dollars, I would travel the world, especially Paris. Life is not meant to be lived in one area. I would go as far as I could go in the given time.
I really love “Harry Potter.” I actually didn’t really like reading until I read “Harry Potter.” My mom recommended it to me and I was like, “You know what, I’m gonna start [reading].” My favorite place is Hogwarts. Hermione is my favorite character. I simply love the plot. It’s so creative. [My interests are] mostly horror. All horror. I love, love, love Stephen King, he is my favorite [author]. My favorite of his books is “Carrie.” I really want to be an author. I love writing. I also wanna be a director. I love writing and watching movies and music and things. They’re like my escape, you know? I really want to move to New York City when I’m older. It’s just seems like the perfect place. I see myself there. I see myself just trying to make the most of everything and having the best time when I’m [in NYC].
I see myself as hardworking, and passionate, and just an all-around great person. I love everybody. I don’t really judge people, and I always admire the strengths in people in general. My parents do make a huge impact in my life and the choices I make. Also the music I listen to, and the movies I watch, and the books I read help shape who I am and the things I do. School also defines who I am. My school and the teachers that I have shape who I am. I learn so much from my teachers and from my classes, and I take what I learn and build steps to it and I just don’t stop giving up on what I’m learning. School is one of those things that you just have to do your best in it because education is like the future. Without it, there is not really a good chance of you going further in life.
I think I have the ability to see things like ghosts because I was born premature, but that’s just what I think. I think I might be psychic, too. I remember that there was this one time that I turned the TV on and then I just went to bed in the basement. I woke up around two in the
morning, and I went to find the remote and it was on the floor and I went to dig for it. I heard a noise and it, like, literally scared the crap out of me. I ran off the couch, and went to turn the light on. I couldn’t find the light switch, I knew where it was but I couldn’t feel it. I don’t know why, but I left a door open in my basement and all I could see was this guy in this all white suit, and it was really weird. And he would not stop looking at me. I was screaming at the top of my lungs, and my family was all asleep upstairs. I finally turned the lights on and he was still there. I kept screaming, “Go away! Go away!” and eventually he slowly went away. In the morning at like breakfast time, I asked my family if they heard me scream, and they couldn’t.

“It’s numbers and it’s critical thinking, and you don’t have to read anything. I like working with numbers. I’m Asian.” Interviewed by Angelica Cataldo
Opinion Editor
I don’t know why, but it changes over the years. Back in third grade, it was Snickers. Then when I got into middle school, it changed into Skittles and then Starbursts. Eventually, when I got into high school, [my favorite candy] became Twix.
I really had to use the bathroom, but I was like, “Man, I gotta finish this up.” My toys needed a house to stay in, you know, but all of a sudden it’s all running down my leg. So when I went to the bathroom, I missed the toilet, and got the side of the wall, the side of the toilet and the side of the shower curtain. I just missed everything all because I wanted my toys to have a Lego home... It was like oh, 10 years ago. I’m more controlled now. But hey, you gotta go, you gotta go.
I plan on studying business, ‘cause business is where it’s at. I don’t wanna be like my freakin’ sisters and my mom ‘cause they’re all nurses, and no one wants to go into the medical field when [your whole family] is in the medical field, because it’s big competition, you know? Plus, I like math. It’s numbers and it’s critical thinking, and you don’t have to read anything. I like working with numbers. I’m Asian. I make myself laugh, honestly. I crack myself up all the time. Have you ever heard the quote, “If you laugh at somebody a lot you’re attracted to them”? I make myself laugh. So, you know, I’m attracted… To myself. I’m not even kidding, I mean who wouldn’t want this? Some people call me a hipster, but I’m definitely not a hipster, and I’m definitely not mainstream. I don’t want to be any of that. I mean I’m Jantzen, man. I do my own thing and people can copy me and do whatever they want. I’m actually named after a bathing suit brand… Back then when I was a kid, I was playing with my Legos, and then all of a sudden
One day I really wanna build a time machine. I’m serious. I just really want to do that, and try gambling. I also want to go to the moon. I’m not a big TV watching person. I like the news, does that count? My entire life I’ve been about that rap and hip-hop and whatever you’ll find on 107.5, but lately I’ve been realizing that their music is slowly becoming crap. I also like the oldies. They’re classics and c’mon, who doesn’t love classics? Music back then was so smooth. I like The Beatles, too. Everybody starts off with “Hey Jude” and then bam: instant liking of The Beatles. I did tennis and I do FBLA: those are my main activities. I didn’t wanna do basketball ‘cause that requires real running. Plus, I get great tans from tennis. And FBLA, I like competing at state, I met a lot of cool people. FBLA is like my second home, maybe third. If I had a million dollars I’d probably waste it on the lottery. But I’m not 18 yet, so my second thing would be to build a time machine. Third, I have to go to college, right? And fourth, I’d save it, at least 30 percent of it. And charity, y’know? All charities are special and that’s what matters. I’m a good person…

I’m nice. I share my time, I feed the homeless. I think volunteering is cool. I went to church and confessed the other day. Amen. But no, of course, I go to church, I’m Filipino. I’m Catholic. I’m
not close to church, I go there because my mom says so. My mom says, “Go to church.” I say, “Okay, Mom.” [I enjoy church], but when I told my boss, she called me a liar. We’re on that kind of level.

I believe in God.
I don’t have spare time.
I would probably change the culture of people only finding themselves to be important. Instead of, “I need the new Ranger or Escalade,” I would want people to be more concerned in helping others.
My life motto is don’t bend over backwards for someone that doesn’t help you. My favorite TV show is “Justified” on FX because of the modern day cowboy theme.
If I could go anywhere in the past, I would probably not want to change too much, but I would probably go back to some interesting events in history, such as the first battle of the Revolutionary War to see who really did fire first. I have a law for my car radio that I have banned anyone from turning off a single AC/DC song. If I could have any superpower, I would probably choose super brain powers, because then you can have every power and dominate everyone. I don’t really have a motto I live by, I just kind of do. There is no real driving force behind my life, I just live and if somebody has a problem with that, then that sucks for them. If my house was on fire and I could only grab three things, I would make sure my family is okay, I would put on a pair of pants, an axe to hack my way out, and I would grab my cell phone to call for help. I am pretty close to living my dream job right now. Being a gunsmith would be my dream job, and I spend a lot of my time working at a gun range. If people didn’t read the Tinkle Times, they should probably know that I was an Eagle Scout. My most embarrassing moment has to be dancing to “Bye, Bye, Bye” at Mr. HHS. My proudest accomplishment is probably being an Eagle Scout, it is something that probably only 20 percent of scouts do. It is a pretty big accomplishment. My biggest regret is running my car into a tree and probably not trying as hard as I probably could in school.

’m pretty open. Everybody I know knows everything about me.
My hero is Neil Armstrong. He proved anything is possible. He went into space; I think that’s pretty cool. Only a handful of people have been on the moon, but he’s dead now. I’d make the moon closer so you could take a plane to the moon. It would be like a desert resort. It’d be cool.

[If it was my last day I’d] do stuff I wouldn’t be able to do before. I got a conscience; I wouldn’t be able to kill anyone. Don’t do drugs and stay in school. I’d like to skydive, go to space, go scuba diving... that’d be pretty cool.
“Keep on moving.” I just feel like it’s a good motto. It’s true to life. Do as much as you can, as fast as you can.
[A friend is] someone who’s got your back. If you like them and they like you, you guys can be friends.
I’ve done a lot of crazy things. I’ve done stupid things. Like, I jumped off a swing set and broke my leg. I jump off a lot of stuff and break my leg. I broke my leg in third grade by jumping off a rock wall... I don’t really jump off stuff any more. I’ll take stupid bets, but that’s about it. When I was about three or four I was showing my grandma my stuffed animals and other toys, and I tripped over one of them and hit my head on the dresser. I cracked my skull open. I guess what I learned from that is watch where you walk. Why are there still wars and sh*t? We’re

you. That got in my head and made me think it could be human sized. I’d like to be a ghost. That’d be pretty cool. I’d get to trick people and sh*t. I got bit in the face by a dog once. I’m not afraid of dogs because of it; he was just a pr*ck. I’m not really materialistic. I don’t have a lot of stuff. [If I could go back in time] I’d see dinosaurs. I’d want to do Flintstone-style stuff and ride on the back. I heard real dinosaurs are not like Jurassic Park-type dinosaurs. I heard they’re more like birds. I like history. I like learning about the past and sh*t. I used to like science, but not so much any more. It’s got math in it now. I don’t like math. I liked science back in middle and elementary school when it was all about plants and animals, but it’s difficult now. [I like] if a girl has the same sense of humor as I do. I’m immature. I like d*ck jokes and fart jokes. I laugh at that sh*t.

“Always choose friends that build you up, avoid people who drag you down.” Interviewing by Danielle Rivera Staff Writer
I
grew up in Barrington with a family of six and a dog. Our family took many vacations to national parks. I attended Catholic school throughout grade school, high school, and college.
If it’s my last day on earth I would be with my family. I think that has to be the only answer. If I could go back in time, I would not go back very far. I like the convenience of modern time. I think I’d go back to the ‘50s because life was simpler and I think values were better.
My hero is my dad. He worked hard all his life and managed to raise a family. He became successful and chose a great partner. I know he would always be there and do anything for me.
If I could go back to when I was in high school, I would get involved in things I’ve never been involved in. I would have been in drama and plays, since I am a very dramatic person. Also, I would have chosen to go to a different college. I attended St Mary’s College of Notre Dame.
True happiness is elusive; I think it’s difficult for people to be truly happy. I believe that true happiness is being satisfied with your state in life. Nobody knows the true meaning of life, but I think it’s to make a difference and to leave the world a better place. The best advice I’ve ever received would have to be, “Always chose friends that build you up, avoid people who drag you down.”

I’m totally a dog person because they come when they’re called and give unconditional love. They are loyal and faithful companions. I love playing with my dog.
The motto I live by is: to treat others as you would like to be treated. It’s the golden rule.
If I could make the world listen, I would tell it to negotiate for peace. We don’t need war for peace. All we need to do is negotiate. If I could choose just one thing to change about it, I would want to get rid of war. I want global peace.
People wake up in the middle of the night and worry and I actually do this quite often. I worry about what’s going on with my students and everything that I need to accomplish.
It’s worse to never attempt something than fail! I would rather fail. It’s awesome to know that you at least tried.
I do believe in God. I am a lifelong Catholic and lifelong Christian. My faith in God is central in my life. After we die I believe that we all go to heaven.
Something that people don’t know about me is that I’ve been held at gun point three times in my life!
If I could have any superpower, I would want the power of healing. I would want to heal those who are sick.
When I was in high school my favorite class was called The Bible. I went to a Catholic school. I loved the teacher, his name was Mr. White. He was awesome. He was Irish and looked like a leprechaun. He would open up the Bible and tell all the stories. The class was very interesting.

believe in God, most people think that he died on Sept. 13, 1996, but I think he is coming back this year.
My motto is, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t blow your nose into your hand.”
If I could change one thing about the world, it would probably be to make all monetary coins based on their own weight, so that you could weigh your change in order to tell its value.
[My favorite holiday is] Christmas because it is an ancient pagan festival, the history of which not many people know. My favorite number is two, because it is the only even prime number.
I would rather be cold because I have to deal with being hot every day.
My favorite movie is “Rubber.” My least favorite movie would have to be “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I don’t like it because it is too happy and it is in black and white.
If I could have one superpower it would be to have the ability to cut paper by pantomiming scissors with my hand. I would like to have dinner with Tupac, because he is an icon, Genghis Khan because he is my favorite historical figure, Jesus because you can’t really turn that down, Hillary Clinton so I don’t sound sexist, and Joseph Stalin. I would love to live in Canada because it will become the next world power. Canada has massive oil reserves and when Saudi Arabia eventually runs out of oil, they will get invaded. Canada will rise to power and they will be protected by their proximity to the US and their hazardous climate.

If it was my last day on earth, I would spend it stockpiling resources for my trip to Mars.
Give a man a match, and he will be warm for a minute. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
My ideal day is 24 hours like any other day so I don’t screw up the Gregorian Calendar.
[The best vacation I ever went on was] probably to Boston because I got to visit MIT, which will be the only time I will ever go there.
Education in America is oriented on evaluation instead of on education and that is a problem. [After you die] if you are Tupac you come back, if not, you don’t.
[The meaning of life is] the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity and continual change preceding death. I
[My greatest fear is] having shins like John Hemingway. A perfect friend is 65 percent oxygen, 18.5 percent carbon, 9.5 percent hydrogen, 3.2 percent nitrogen, 1.5 percent calcium, 1.0 percent phosphorous and less than one percent of many other elements. [The biggest personal change I have ever made is] theoretically the max I could have ever made is 99 cents, assuming you are only counting solid change not paper. I have two heroes. Lawrence Joseph Henderson and Karl Albert Hasselbalch, because their equation just made my last AP Chemistry test drastically easier.

will never own a dog because they are too much work, I will never do them justice.
I would like to be able to teleport, because I would like to be here at Huntley High School and then teleport to the beach after school.
True happiness is Coca-Cola, sitting in the sand, looking over Lake Michigan when the sun is going down. I don’t really think about [what happens after death],
The only reason I would go back in time is to do things that were fun again. The biggest change you could ever have is learning how to deal with not having any money.
Mayo, and that would be Miracle Whip, the tasty creamy kick, and avocado. I don’t care what the meat is, [a sandwich] needs to have mayo and avocado.
[The meaning of life] is making the decision to be happy. This too shall pass, that’s what my grandma used to say. You might be in a tough time, but you will get through it. What else are you going to do?
I like music because you can feel it, and you can hear it. You can like rap music and be into it, and like country music, and classical, if you keep an open mind.
[My greatest achievement is] being able to do what I like to do, what I’m meant to do, and to still love what I do.
If you don’t fail, you’ll never learn. Period. It’s not really failure if you didn’t learn from it. You might as well try, what’s the worst that can happen? You fail? Some people think it’s the end of the world, but it’s not, it’s the beginning.
My heroes are normal people, people who work through their adversity and come out better on the other side. People who have positive attitudes and don’t blame other people for their problems in life. People who help themselves.
My greatest fear is ending up in a post-apocalyptic world… With no Coca-Cola. I can’t live without it.
I think one of the things that is missing in America is personal responsibility, and taking responsibility for your education. If you can expend the effort to learn, this education system can work for you.
A good friend is someone who is there for you, someone you can have an understanding with. Someone who can challenge you, and somebody who can handle it if you go two weeks without talking, because we all have our lives and they kinda go by, because they’re special. The best advice I have ever gotten... Open your mail, don’t avoid things. Open your mail and face it.
I don’t think anything. But I don’t know what that is, and I don’t think I can know what that is until it happens.

think I would have mind reading, so I can tell if people are thinking negative things about me.
I’m not really a superhero person. I have three favorite villains. I like the Joker, Harley Quinn, and Loki. If you try something and you fail, at least you tried, right? If I had to pick an all-time favorite cartoon character, it would be Gaara from “Naruto.” He’s the reason I really started getting into anime. I started “Naruto” and the first episode I watched had him in it. I just fell in love with him. “Hellsing” would probably be my favorite anime. It’s like this vampire sort of anime, and it came out way before Twilight did, so I liked vampires before Twilight ever came out. I do believe in God, but I’m not crazy about it, like, I don’t go to church a lot. The last time I went was when my brother got Confirmed. I believe in God and I pray before dinner. I’m just not crazy about it. I love dogs. I have a dog at home and I love her to death. She’s the first one I’ve had and I’ve had her [since] seventh grade. [On the] second to last day of [seventh grade], I got her. I do, kind of, believe in heaven and hell, so I think, maybe, if I’m good enough maybe I’ll go to heaven. There’s a quote from “Kingdom Hearts” that Axle
says: “If you have a dream, don’t wait. Act. Got it memorized?” That’s my motto. With the activities I used to do, I tried getting into sports when I used to be best friends with certain people. I had bad friends who tried to get me to do stupid things, and I tried to do sports like her. When I started liking anime, she turned me down and was like, “Oh my God, that’s so stupid, you’re stupid.” So I kind of gave up on her and started doing theater and stuff in middle school and I started finding better friends who accepted me for who I am and I think that changed me.
We had this theater banquet, and Mr. George was just saying what the next thespian committee was going to be after the seniors graduated. I was just given my thespian card, so I wasn’t expecting anything else to happen, and then as he said the president’s name, he called my name up and I was like, “Wait, what? Is this real?”
Theater has made me more comfortable to be a little more out there, and just do certain things that other people wouldn’t probably do. Theater is what I want to do when I get to college. If that doesn’t work, I’ve always thought about voice acting. It just looks fun. One time I was on Twitter and my favorite voice actor, whose name is Crispin Freeman (he’s Itachi in “Naruto” and he plays Alucard in “Hellsing,”) was just tweeting, and he likes to reply to his fans. I just asked him how he got into [voice acting] and he sent me a link to how he got into anime voice acting. I was just like, “AHHH! This is awesome!” My brother and I were both diagnosed with Autism, so [my parents] had to make sure we were careful and stuff, but they were really cool parents. They were stressed out, and by the time we grew up they weren’t as stressed. They’re stressed when we say we have plans [on the] weekend, but they’re cool and we barely get in trouble.

Prosopagnosia is a disorder in which people struggle to recognize faces.
Favorite childhood memory: escaping the laboratory. [My life is] an obscure series of film and TV references no one understands. Werther's Originals are absolutely delicious, it's like eating at your grandma's house.
Adam Urbanski I don't know about you, but if I've had my greatest achievement in the first 18 years, I think there is a problem. Well this one time I watched "The View” for an entire 30 minutes, and I'm still in therapy. And "Jersey Shore,” I've been traumatized ever since. Horrifying.
Invisibility because, you know, just be invisible. Fight crime, save the day, save puppies, have a statue made of myself that's invisible. That's how they commemorate me.
I had a couple, actually. I had a collection of army men, and Mr. Snuggles, my bear. He's my homie. He's terrifying. He scares away all the monsters underneath my bed. Well, not anymore. The monsters and I are on good terms.
Perhaps join the circus. I can twirl a baton like nobody's business. I think it would be a good place there.
Clowns. Terrifying. Look at their feet, they're huge, but I'll have to get over that. Have you ever seen the movie "It”? It's terrifying.
"Tom and Jerry,” and definitely Jerry. Because that show is amazing, awesome. That show is practically my childhood. Morning cartoons are my thing. "Looney Toons”? I mean, come on, who hates them? Eat a bowl of cereal on Saturday mornings and watch a cat chase a mouse around the house and destroy half the building in the process. Frank Sinatra. ‘Cause he's awesome, I suppose. The jazzy melodies, the lyrics, the actual soul behind the music. Nine. It is the day I was born on, and it's lucky. It's scientifically proven, it's science. My motto is suck it up. Just suck it up. Suck it up, buttercup. I've got a picture in my locker of a D-day invasion and it says, "Your day has neither been this important or this difficult so man the F up and get to it.”
Socializing is my forte. Dr. Pepper, mostly. Pizza. I'm a simple man. Netflix and a comfy chair. And a nice cozy sweater with a blanket over the top. And possibly $10,000 cash in my pocket. Like I said, I'm a simple man. I would definitely rather be cold because you can warm up. But I would say that the cold never bothered me anyways. I would have to go someplace a little more classy, like Wendy's. And it would prob-
ably have to be Ronald Reagan, Joseph Stalin, Chris Farley, John Wayne, and Sean Connery. I thought about that for a while. I'm not going to give some B.S. answer like poverty. I would probably have to get rid of Tom Cruise. You have to prioritize. Side? I'm on nobody's side because nobody is on my side. Treebeard is my spirit animal. Always bring a banana to an interview. It's an excellent source of potassium.
I broke the banana, I can't help it. This banana just broke. I don't know how you can break a banana, but I think I just did. I need an adult, but I'm already 18. So I need someone who is more of an adult. Oh God, I broke a banana. I need help. I work at Domino's. It's a lovely experience. I make dreams
come true. [Tomato] is obviously a fruit because science.
You pronounce it GIF like gift. If you say (J)if, then it's peanut butter. People say education in America is broken. Well, my teachers did learn me good, so I would have to disagree. I would like to beat the highest score on Pac-Man at the arcade. AAA has beaten my high score several times, and I want to beat him. No one beats my Pac-Man high score. Holidays? We ride our reindeer all the way to Poland. Air fare is expensive but we manage because you have to give [the reindeer] a lot of apples. That's the truth, reindeer like apples. So if you have carrots, they won't accept you. That's just the truth of the matter. I'm hilarious. Someone love me.
Annette Urbanski I like Arctic Monkeys Meyer, and I think it and Modest Mouse. They was Obama. I need one sound pretty through my more... Hitler. headphones. I think seven is my faProbably to fly, I think vorite number, but there’s that would be fun. No, no reason why. to be invisible because you can, like, creep on Red. I just love red. people. It’s such a pretty color. It’s so intense. I would make it warm all the time. TemperaI don’t really like ture-wise, never below animals, to be completely 50 degrees and no snow honest. I think dogs are except for on Christmas cool, like Huskies. Day. Parrots. I want a parrot. How cool would “American Horror Sto- that be? ry” is the best. It’s so messed up. There’s, like, I’d be a lion, but a boy aliens. I love it. lion with the mane. I don’t want to be a Not for a long time. I lioness. don’t really like kids. I feel like I want kids so Oh, Adam drove us off they look like me, but the road because he other than that I really thought he was too good don’t want kids. to put on four wheel drive, so he drove us off Adam told me what the road. It was really to say for the people I scary. should have dinner with. He told me to say JeI like Thanksgiving sus, Mohammad, Joey because you get to eat.
I went to Poland. It was a lot of fun. I wasn’t with my fasmily, I was all by myself. I was with my cousins, and they are older than me. Somebody who is nice and doesn’t judge someone on how you first see them like on anything physical. You know, like look deeper. That’s pretty chill. Define broken. I wouldn’t say education is broken. It has its perks and it has its flaws like everything else. A tomato is a vegetable because it grows in the ground, but I know it’s typically a fruit because it has seeds. No, I hate arcades. They’re gross and dirty. I like Pac-Man, which is pretty chill. It’s the only game I’m good at. Well, I decided it would be a really good idea to take my ATV on the road, and I hit a mailbox, and had to rebuild it. I guess that would be a mistake. I have this idea. You know how there’s 80 bajillion religions, not really, but you know what I mean? Well, I think
that it’s this one that nobody really can grasp, and every single religion is like the same thing. And whatever you believe, that’s what happens. Probably eat and watch TV to relax. Or if I have anxiety, I’ll work out. And if I’m just lazy, I’ll sleep. Someone who listens, someone who is fun, but serious, too. This guy is in a lecture hall, and he holds up a book that’s black to the audience. And he goes, what color is the book? He says the book is red. And the students are like, no it’s not. Then he turns the book around, and his side was red. Then he goes, “Never judge until you see the other person’s point of view.” I think that it’s so true. I don’t know if I really would give advice to my younger self because if I gave myself advice then it would change, like, my thoughts that I have now. Everything bad has led up to who I am now. I’m not very much a material person. Like everything I need is not something I can take. I can live without my phone or computer, or even my house.

f I had a superpower it’d be reading peoples’ minds, I think I would really like that. I think it would be cool, and I think that so much of the time we say things that are not always the things that we’re thinking. As a teacher, I measure my words quite a bit. There are things we can say, things we can’t say, and even in social situations you know when somebody thinks something differently of you. I think that would be a nice. Honesty power, if you will. My last meal would be a sausage and cheese pizza from Peppy’s Pizzeria in New Haven, Conn. I was born in Connecticut and we were there until 1980, and then we moved to Jersey in ‘85. It’s been around forever and it’s thin crust. It’s something about how they cook it. My grandparents, when they were dating, used to go to this place, so it’s like an institution. Peppy’s Pizzeria. Yeah. Oh, man. Pep’s. So good. I used to not really have [dogs]. Ironically, when I was a kid, my dad didn’t like dogs, we hounded him and hounded him to get us one. He gets us one and it literally dies on my lap on the way to the vet. I was in like sixth grade, it was so traumatic. Disney World. I went there a bunch as a kid. I went to Disneyland when I was a little bit older. [There’s] something about Disney World; [there’s] fond memories there, and it feels legitimate. It’s like, so much in California is fake anyway, so here’s this other fake thing. In Orlando, you buy it, like, “Wow, this could be like a different world.” [Marriage is] not about you, it’s about you as a couple. Be super flexible, be accommodating, and there’s going to be times when you get what you want. There’s going to be times when she gets what she wants or whatever the situation is. It’s a partnership. It’s you two against the world. So, make it work. I think I’d actually like to have dinner with Trent Rezner, who’s the lead singer for Nine Inch Nails. I was going to go with, like, Jesus Christ or Plato or Socrates, but I would really just want to talk to him. He’s got a lot going on and a lot of stuff I could relate to. I’m Roman Catholic. You know the joke about Catholicism is like, “Oh, you’re a holiday Catholic, you only go to church on holidays.” Yeah, I believe in an all-knowing, an all-loving, all-powerful God that I hope is steering humanity in the right direction. I don’t know if that’s the case because it just seems we get so many examples of the contrary. So yeah, I would say I have very good faith. Church is just a building to me. It’s more about your conversation with God. [My best piece of advice is] be patient, and don’t rush everything. I was always, “I want to grow up, I want to grow up, I want
(K. Gallegos) to be older, I want to be older,” and it’s great, but when you’re older all you want to do is slow things down. So, I would say be patient. I was never, like, super aggressive or super masculine as a kid. I was a pretty sensitive boy. So I tried gymnastics and I loved it. I liked tumbling. I was always climbing trees and jumping out of our balcony into sand. I was always doing that kind of risky stuff. So gymnastics was the perfect fit. And I did it in college, so I did it from when I was about seven-ish, so
roughly around 12 years or so. I miss it, but you can’t really do it as you’re older because it hurts. I miss playing video games. If I could, if I had the time, I would spend a whole weekend just playing games. I like yard work because it looks awesome when you’re done. And then you know you’ve done it. It looks freaking dope. I have four tattoos. I have the four signs from Led Zeppelin “Four,” “Zoso,” and
then the circle with the feather and the rings. I have a custom tattoo that an old student [designed] for me that I got on one of my sobriety anniversaries. [That tattoo] was like my gift to myself. It’s kind of a combo sobriety symbol [and a] tribal tattoo. [I have] checkered flags on my left ankle because for years I wanted to be a racecar driver. I was convinced I was going to be the next Mario Andretti. And the eight, I just got the eight and Santa Claus brought that. I just got that over winter break. I love tattoos. I love getting them, and I love the feeling of it.

If I had a choice between Disneyland and Disney World, I would pick Disney World, because its a world, not a land. I’d rather go to a world and have everything, not just a land.
cause people still judge people by the color of their skin. There are plenty of people racist to me; it makes me feel terrible, but I don’t care at the same time.
My favorite candy is Snickers. How could you not love it? It’s chocolate and creamy on the inside.
If I could go back in time, I would go to the 1996 NBA finals to see Michael Jordan’s last shot before he retired, given the chance. I like cats over dogs since they don’t make a lot of noise.
I believe in a black Jesus, because he died for us. Jesus had long dreads, I know it. I’m different. I’m not the same as anybody, and I’m proud. Patrick Star is my favorite cartoon because he’s dumb and funny at the same time. Having Elmo go to my birthday party was my most memorable moment. He was way taller than he was supposed to be, that guy was 6’9”. If I could change one thing in the world, it would 100 percent be racism be-

Liam Elke, Rubik’s Cube master “I like the excitement of winning, and striving to better myself every day.” Interviewed by Cullen Walsh
Staff Writer best advice I’ve ever been given would just to be to say that to women in general.
I played on the freshman basketball team during my freshman year. I found out that I have a congenital heart disease and have to have a defibrillator around. I’m still a part of the team and I love basketball.
I’d probably have to say that my greatest achievement so far would be dunking for the first time. I worked really hard to do that. I just kept trying, and when I lifted weights my exclusive purpose behind that was to get stronger so that I could dunk.
I like the excitement of winning, and striving to better myself every day. I like how you can set goals that you will one day be able to reach, but only through lots of practice and hard work and determination.
Before I die, I’d like to have a couple of kids, go to a few different countries, travel the world, drive a really fast car-- like a Lamborghini or a Corvette.
I like the underlying meanings behind some of the references that are included in the episodes of Spongebob Squarepants. Some of the stuff that younger kids wouldn’t understand, but older people are able to pick out of the episodes. If I had any superpower, it would be the ability to stop time, because I could do so much more stuff and be so much more efficient. I could do my homework in two minutes and have the rest of the night to do whatever I want. Or if I’m running late somewhere, just stop time so I can make it to where I need to be on time. It’s worse to have never attempted something in the first place than to fail at doing it. If you don’t attempt something, then you

would have to live with not knowing what would have happened if you would have done it instead. Then what you could do if you fail at something is just never attempt it again.
The one thing that I regret the most is not playing to my fullest potential, or working as hard as I could. Now I can’t play basketball any more.
I’m kind of a carefree guy, to be honest. If anything, I probably worry about homework the most.
The best piece of advice I was ever given was: when you get married, the only line you should say is, “Yes, Dear.” Actually, the
If I am what I eat, then I am sandwiches. I like how you can change up sandwiches. I can have beef one day, then turkey the next. And you can make different combinations with meats, vegetables, condiments, all sorts of stuff. I guess you could say that I have a collection of Rubik’s Cubes. I like solving different kinds of Rubik’s Cubes, and racing myself. Different shapes, different variations pretty much. I do 4x4x4 cubes, 5x5x5 cubes, that sort of thing.

We had so many mutual friends that it was crazy how we never met before, and we were both juniors too. After that, we just kicked it off and that’s where we are now. Cold weather is the best. There is almost nothing you can do in the summer that you can do in the winter. I mean, who can go sledding in the summer? Most things you can just go indoors and do anyways, which is why it’s so much better. I love this song by Jason Mraz called “Sleeping to Dream.” I just discovered it recently and I love it, but he’s so much better live. He does this cool thing with his voice that he just doesn’t do in the recorded version, which really makes him cool to listen to.

My mom and dad were high school sweethearts. They’re very supportive of me too. I could tell them that I wanted to be a bank robber, and they would probably say, “Okay, we’ll help you out,” or, “We’ll stay by your side.” I mean, they’d support me no matter what I chose to do in life, and
that’s something I really appreciate about them. I love to listen to music a lot, but when people try to talk to me while I get into my music zone, it’s really annoying, especially in the morning when I haven’t had my
coffee yet. I’m so antisocial in the morning and all I really want to do first is listen to my music.
My favorite artist is Ed Sheeran, but not because of when he sang with Taylor Swift. I was listening to him long before that. He does an acoustic-y thing with his guitar when he’s live. Basically I love artists who sound good live. My favorite songs from him are “Give me Love,” “Kiss Me,” and I would have to say I like “Fireflies” too.
His name is Javvy, and I met him at Homecoming. I was just dancing with everyone until the slow dance came, then

I really like to read, especially the book “The Fault in Our Stars.” It’s a typical love story, but I just love reading it. When I was little, I went on a cruise with my family. All of a sudden the alarms on the ship went off and I thought it was like the Titanic, so I was freaking out and my parents were trying to stay calm but you could tell they were nervous too. It ended up just being a drill, but it was still pretty scary. Sometimes I just relieve stress by reading a book; I go to my room, shut the door and just relax into a nice little corner.
I have a friend named Nicole and she’s my best friend. We’ve been friends since first grade. We can just say anything to each other, and that’s really a good trait to have in a friend. I really like this song by Christina Perry that we’ve recently started doing a dance to, and once I heard it, I just began listening to all of her songs. My favorite animals are pandas. They are so cute and calm, and I just love them. I’ve never eaten at Panda Express though. I try to eat healthy and don’t really eat fast food. Even at home my mom usu-
ally cooks healthy foods and sometimes Ecuadorian meals. Every year I go on a long road trip with my mom, grandma, and sister. We’ve gone to Mall of America, St. Louis, and Wisconsin. I remember at Mall of America, I lost half of the bags of clothes I bought. When we got back I was freaking out, but I have no idea how I lost it. (A. Mosquera)

Greta Donovan, one-of-a-kind “Being a shape-shifter would be so cool. You could surprise people and scare the bejeezus out of them.” Interviewed by Jackie Polit
Staff Writer
If I could live in any time frame, it would be in a time where murders, courtships, and Jack the Ripper all took place. In the 1860s in England, of course. It sounds crazy, but I want to live in that time because it is actually really interesting.
reason He does not visit us is because He fears His own creation.
Being a shape-shifter would be so cool. If I could have any superpower that would be it. Think about all the things you could do as a shape-shifter. It’s a good defense mechanism. You could surprise people and scare the bejeezus out of them. And you could solve mysteries and conspiracies.
My dream job is to work in the field of anthropology and its subfields. Any subfield except linguistics, because that section is just impossible for me. I would work in anthropology because I like the study of humans and am interested in our origins. What if we could find missing links?
My last meal would consist of my two favorite comfort foods and dessert. I would have sushi and pot roast. Lemon meringue to finish it off.
I have many philosophies. My spiritual philosophy, or belief, is that we live in different planes of existence. My personal philosophy is to not judge others based on a part of who they are. A single aspect of them does not define their entire being. You need to see the person as a whole.
If I were to go back in time and create one modern tool, I would create the computer. You could make a hell of a lot of money! I do not believe in God. I believe in hope and a religion that focuses on spirits. If I did believe in Him though, I would wonder why He doesn’t visit us. I would think the

Most people’s prized possessions are their phones or laptops. Mine is an old American poetry and prose book owned by my great-uncle George. It’s from the ‘40s or ‘50s and contains a variety of styles and many writers such as Edgar Allen Poe to
Robert Frost. If I could tell my younger self one piece of advice, it would be that things do not always get better. Family issues don’t always get resolved. You will not always be seen as who you are. A really pivotal point in my life would be when I came out as bisexual. When I came out I was looked down on because bisexuality was looked down on. I was surrounded by girls who would say this boy is cute and that boy is hot, but I didn’t think that just boys were cute. I had not heard of the LGBT community until eighth grade and I was so confused for the longest time.

Kara Brace, world traveler “I want to eat crickets and scorpions and anything in between when I go to China.” Interviewed by Jackie Polit
Staff Writer
I want to eat everything. I want to eat crickets and scorpions and anything in between when I go to China. I am going to China from June 9 to June 20 with 10 other students. We are going to Beijing, Xi’an, Gong Zuo, Yang Xiao, and Shang Hai. We will be visiting all the tourist attractions like the Great Wall of China, the Beijing Zoo, the Terracotta Warriors, and climbing Moon Hill. I am really excited to go to China to experience and learn about the culture. But I’m nervous if I have to ask for help. I will have to talk to them and I am really limited in my Chinese. I’ll probably end up saying something like, “This is a grape,” when I want to know where the bathroom is. I expect China to be really crowded and polluted, and that the people will want to take pictures with me. My mom went to Hawaii once and the people were really tan and dark haired. They wanted to take pictures with her because she was pale and had light hair. And I expect the people in China will want to take pictures with me
because I am pale and American. Although I might act like I’m British when I go because I think China looks down on Americans and I do not want to be looked down on.
My last meal would be the finest Peking duck and some kind of Chinese noodles, with lemonade on the side. I would not want homemade lemonade though, it’s too sour. I want Peking duck because I’ve never had it before and I love Chinese food.
If I could change one thing in the world I would want to take away the evil aspects of human nature. I would want to take away mankind’s greed, hate, and religion. It is the main thing that causes wars.
I want to believe that after you die, that’s it. Nothing comes after. But I believe in ghosts. If your spirit doesn’t die with your body, you become a ghost.
The ‘60s was a great time to live. That is where I would want to be if I could live in any time frame. I would be a hippie and go to Woodstock.
(J. Polit)
If I could live anywhere in the world I would want to live on top of a hill or a smallish mountain in Bolivia. Have you seen it? It’s beautiful and serene and I would enjoy the lack of people.
The most pivotal point in my life would be coming out and being true to myself. Being comfortable with your own self is the hardest thing to do. My hero is MrRepzion. He makes Youtube videos where he talks about equal rights for the LGBT community. He talks about the seriousness of sexual assault and he is very motivational.

Tyler Nowotnik, dancing through life “The best experience of my life was when I got to dance with LA Dance Magic.” Interviewed by Trisha Fritz
Staff Writer am a cat person. Who isn’t a cat person? Satan?
It is better to try and fail than to never try it. If you never attempt something, you will never know, and if you try and fail at least you know you are that much closer to success.
If I had to choose my last meal it would probably be a combination between breakfast, pizza, and dessert. Technically three meals on one big platter, like French toast, pancakes, bacon, lots of syrup, and like a whole pizza and on the side ice cream.
The best piece of advice I have ever gotten is, I know it sounds cliché, but be yourself. You should not live your life to please other people. Other people will appreciate that you are yourself and like you for you.
My greatest fear would have to be losing someone you love. You can always fix a fight, but if someone were to pass away it would be so hard.
The best experience of my life would have to be when I went to LA and got to dance with LA Dance Magic. It was so amazing; I literally danced from 7:00 in the morning until like midnight.
My biggest pet peeve is people who are overconfident with themselves, selfobsessed, or when people can’t be humbled. An even bigger one has to be when people are so overdramatic and act like everything is the end of the world.

American education is for sure broken. Everyone is lazy, including me, and a lot of people don’t work for the things they get. It is all just handed to them and they never take advantage of things they can do well and just throw it all away.
A good friend is someone you can trust with everything, and they are loyal to you. If you tell someone something and they go tell someone else, that is so obnoxious.
My advice for incoming freshman is pick up your stuff; you are not in preschool, don’t leave your nasty junk all over the lunch tables. Please, can you not be immature about stuff ?
I would rather be hot over cold, because I like to sweat. Actually, I kind of like wearing sweaters because that is my entire wardrobe so maybe cold. My favorite TV show when I was younger has to be “Blue’s Clues.” I used to dress up as Steve every day, and I don’t mean on Halloween. I mean every day. One time I broke the crayon that went with the notebook and I cried for three days straight.
A motto I live by is be yourself, be different, always aspire to be a better you. True happiness is love, in anything. For some it’s a person, for others it’s an object or career or dream.

My dream job is to be a choreographer, to own my own company, and my kids will be amazing, and the most conditioned kids in the world. After we die I feel like there is some kind of place that we go to, some kind of judgment, but there is an afterlife where we are surrounded by the people we love and is not controlled by just one being.
If there was one thing I would change is how people are basically ignorant. People are so single-minded, narrow, and are stuck on one way and are not willing to change for other people and accept other people, so in that sense of ignorance. Ignorance is stupidity.
Something that brings the most joy to life is dance. It is so cliché when someone says, “Dance is a way to express myself,” but it is so true. You find an art form where you can not only create something but the physical aspect of it where you can put your heart and soul into it and your mind is not just surface level.

Tyler Vasconez, future pilot “Anything is achievable as long as you work hard enough.”
Senior and future Navy pilot Tyler Vasconez sits down to work on homework in the Huntley High School Library (K. Sommerfield).
Interviewed by Kyle Sommerfield Content Editor My greatest achievement is getting into the Naval Academy. My biggest achievement now is getting in, but my goal is to get through it because that’s the hardest part. Being able to accept the challenge of that [is a pretty big achievement]. My Ecuadorian nationality is an inspiration to me because my grandfather came over here with nothing. It taught me that hard work goes a long way. My philosophy on life is that anything is achievable as long as you work hard enough. I chose the Naval Academy because I think it’s the hardest thing for myself, but I know it’s going to make me the best Tyler I can be. I want to fly planes [after I graduate]. I started flying sophomore year and it was because when I was little, my dad’s friend took me up in his little prop plane. I was like six or seven and he took me up and we flew all over the place. So, when we landed, I was like, “Dad, that was really cool. I want to do that forever.” I want to be able to land a fighter jet on an aircraft car-
rier in the dark while it’s raining. Interviewing with the Congressional Committee for my nomination to the academy [was the hardest thing I’ve ever done]. They’re really important people and I had to tell them why I was qualified. I used sports because I didn’t want to become a onedimensional person, someone who was only good at school or only good at sports. Sports always came second to school, but it was always kind of that being well-rounded aspect. My best pickup line is usually “Hi, I’m Tyler Vasconez.” I’d say it has about an 85 percent success rate. After the competitions are over [at Science Olympiad events], there’s like a two-hour gap where some teams put on shows. I got to be the host of that, the MC. That was pretty cool because being on stage and making people laugh and applaud and all that stuff was cool. It was different. Spending too much money on Nike Elites is one of my greatest fears.
I am also afraid that if the video that I made when I was eight of myself singing “Don’t Stop Believing” goes viral. That would probably be my biggest fear too. My parents hold it over my head. It’s really bad. My motto is “Never give up the ship.” I put it on my wrist tape before every game. I worry about losing my six-pack. Kollin Rott is the coolest person I’ve ever met. He’s just an interesting guy. He’s always got something interesting to say. [True happiness] is waking up and doing what you love every day. Traveling the country playing baseball with Kyle Slonka [is one of my best childhood memories]. It was just a good time and I liked baseball. Brett Favre is my hero. He’s like the definition of man. You’ve got to seize the day, every day. No days off. If you’re not trying to get better, then what are you trying to do?

Samuel Kroyer, artist “Be the best person you can possibly be, and always do the right thing.”
(M. Iqbal)
Interview by Mawa Iqbal
Staff Writer
The meaning of life to me is to be the best person you can possibly be and to always do the right thing. The motto that I live by is that if you’re going to ask a question, never accept just one answer. I guess true happiness is when you know when everything is right and you don’t have to second-guess yourself. If you’re happy, you know you can go to sleep at night.
puter designing and art classes. People don’t need material possessions, but if there’s nothing else in life that they have, it could help them, especially if their spirits are down. If I were to die in two hours, I would eat a Happy Meal from McDonalds, because it would make me feel happier about dying.
I think life is about... If you were to think about what everyone wants you to do, it would be working and stuff like that, but for yourself, it would be about being the person you want to be.
I would have dinner with my dad, John F. Kennedy, Justin Bieber, and George Washington, so that we could all talk to Justin Bieber about how he should live his life better. Justin Bieber has a lot of fans so if he were to act well, I’m pretty sure they might act better.
I wake up, go to school, come home, and go to sleep. Then I wake up at 2:00 a.m. and play video games until it’s time to go to school again. My parents don’t really care. I sleep for 16 to 20 hours on the weekends.
Religion is confusing to me. I believe that Jesus was a great man, but I don’t believe that he was the son of God. If I find the science to back it up, then I might become an atheist or Scientologist in the future.
One day when I grow up, I’d like to go into video game designing or have a job drawing anime. I might go for com-
I believe in reincarnation even though I’m Christian. I think we get reincarnated into another person. I wouldn’t
say you get reincarnated into an animal because that doesn’t really make much sense to me. I have an older brother who’s like 20. I remember playing video games with him once, and I finally beat him. It was pretty awesome because he’s better than me at everything. I guess he was more favored because he was better at sports and got better grades than me. I sometimes wish that I could get to know my extended family, but then I realize that it’s better off leaving it a mystery. You could think that they’re amazing when they’re really not. Getting a family in the future is always in the back of my mind. It’s more of a secondary thing. I want to make sure I’m more set before I could actually pursue that because I’m not fully prepared and it’s not exactly something you want to do if you’re not responsible enough for it, because then your life will start to fall apart.

Katie Constantino, athlete “Sports bring the most joy to my life because I’m super competitive.” Interview by Emily Vitacco
Photographer
I play basketball and soccer and they are my life. I am on varsity for both. I like how they keep me busy and keep me in shape. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t play a sport. I was asked to play soccer with a team from Arizona in the ESPN tournament in Florida over winter break. If I could only eat one meal, it would be a Chipotle burrito bowl with a side of chips and Mr. Pibb because that’s basically my signature meal. I literally eat that twice a week. Sports bring the most joy to my life because I’m super competitive. I have four siblings, five including me. All of us are really busy and we play sports. We all have pretty good relationships with each other. We get along but we also fight, it just depends on our moods and who is the first to make the wrong move. My favorite class is Spanish because a lot of my friends are in my class and Mrs. Swartzloff is a good teacher because she makes class fun. The motto I live by is “Just do it.” Like Nike.
My dinner dates would be Ellen DeGeneres, Dylan O’Brian, Jennifer Lawrence, Hunter Hayes, and Tyler Posey because I believe it would be an entertaining meal.
When I was little, I dressed as Princess Ariel for Halloween, and looking back, I looked like a complete mess with that red wig.
My extended family? Oh, we’re nuts. At family parties we’re always crazy because I have a ton of cousins and we all have a good time.
When people say you are what you eat, I would be Chipotle. I obviously have an unhealthy addiction.
I’m definitely a dog person. I have a Boxer Spaniel named Belle and I got her when I was in fourth grade. She is my favorite sibling. I would want to go back in time to the roaring ‘20s. I would be a flapper because they are carefree and broke out of character.
The best vacation I’ve ever been on was the first year I went to Myrtle Beach because our hotel was on the beach and then we stopped in Tennessee. My favorite band is Florida Georgia Line because they always put me in a good mood and make me think of summer.
My friends are pretty much like me. We can talk for hours and never get bored. A lot of them are athletes and super nice. They are some of the greatest people I’ve ever met. If I had a million dollars, I would pay for college and go on crazy vacations.

Darby D’Andrea, concert expert “The meaning of life is to be happy and to surround yourself with positive people. ” Interview by Emily Vitacco

Not many people know that I am totally addicted to going to concerts. I’ve gone to so many in the past year I can’t even count all of them with both hands. I’ve also met Austin Mahone three times. One time after a concert I followed the singer’s bus back to their hotel so I could meet them. Guess what? I got to meet them. One of the best days of my life. I collect concert tickets because they are memories of the concerts I went to. I would take Cameron Dallas, Nash Grier, Jack Gilinsky, Matt Espinosa, and Shawn Mendes to dinner because they’re funny and know how to have a good time. I have two things that bring joy to my life. One would be my friends because they know how to make me smile and laugh. But also concerts because I can scream and have the time of my life and no one judges me. I like Miley Cryus because she is not afraid to be who she wants to be and she doesn’t care what people say about her. The best advice I have ever been given is to believe in
yourself because honestly when I have my mind set on something and I believe I can accomplish it, I do. My advice to freshmen would be to just live life and have fun. Don’t stress about the stupid things. Definitely be open to change because everything and everyone changes around you. My favorite class is Spanish because I have it with a lot of my friends and it is just fun talking in Spanish the whole time. Mrs. Swartzloff makes the class super fun. If I had 24 hours to live, I would go to the Caribbean and relax with all my favorite people. My favorite vacation is a tough decision between Hawaii and Paris/Barcelona for spring break with the school last year. I loved being in the warmth and surrounded by everything tropical with my family, but I also loved being able to go up the Eiffel Tower with all my friends and making unforgettable memories. My favorite character is Elsa from “Frozen” because she slays. A good friend is someone who actually cares about you, is very nice, and has a good sense of humor. Boring people are lame.
I work at Goodwill and it’s pretty fun. I love the people I work with and I like looking at the crazy weird items that come through donations. I would invent Pretzel M&M’s because they’re my favorite candy and everyone loves them. They’ve gone far. When people say you are what you eat, I guess you would say I’m either mac and cheese or pizza because I literally eat either one every day. A deal breaker in a relationship is most definitely humor. I love laughing and making people laugh. So if you know how to make me laugh you are most definitely a keeper. The meaning of life is to be happy and to surround yourself with positive people.

I don’t believe in God because the idea of an all-forgiving presence seems too good to me, as well as all the bad stuff that has happened.
I get mad at people very easily. They fight each other, screw each other over, cheat on each other, they just piss me off.
My favorite song is “Memories of a Broken Heart” by Crown the Empire because it describes exactly how I feel a lot of the time.
A huge deal breaker in a relationship for me would have to be dishonesty.
My favorite celebrity is Austin Carlile, from my favorite band, Of Mice and Men. Of Mice and Men has just helped through a really hard time, that’s why they are my favorite band. I would rather be cold than hot, not because of some logic thing, just because I like the cold, which is funny because I give warm hugs. Disney World because it’s a lot better than Disneyland and I have some good memories from there. I do collect Beats Electronics. I have three pairs right now and I like to get them and use them because they look cool and sound amazing too. My favorite cartoon character has got to be Popeye the Sailor Man because he can whoop anyone if he eats enough spinach. Not like the cartoon characters that are on Cartoon Network right now. I would definitely make sure that world hunger ends. It’s just amazing to see that we get enough food to eat while other kids around the world are living off of scraps and out of garbage cans. With all this snow and cold outside, [I’d prefer] hot. I am from Puerto Rico so I should be used to warm weather, but anything but this cold. I would go back about 2.3 million years and try to communicate with pre-evolutionary human beings. I would choose teleportation as my superpower because it’s different. There’s Superman who’s super strong and then there’s Batman and those people. I can just imagine not being late to any of my classes. Let’s see, I would make a sandwich with Polish ham, American cheese, lettuce, and mustard on white bread.
My last meal would be all of my favorite foods that my mom makes, which are pork chops, white rice, and mac and cheese.
[I am] Puerto Rican and I don’t think that it really affects me because I know other kids are different nationalities too. My advice would be try as hard as you can, while you can.
Skydive off the Sears Tower with no parachute with myself on fire. If I’m going, I might as well go out in style. I usually listen to my favorite music and play my guitar, which really calms me down.
Go into a forest wearing all camo. It’s something that everyone doesn’t get to experience and is pretty crazy. If I had a million dollars, I would cash it in for all ones, take a bath in it, and then donate it to a charity.
Being a salesman, which is actually a funny story. I was kidding around and told one of my friends that I wanted to be a salesman and he asked if I would be controlling sailboats. The color orange is my favorite because it’s really bright and colorful. Even my iPod is orange because of this. My birthday. It’s a day that’s about me and I get presents and all that good stuff. What can be better holiday than that? My greatest fear is definitely Slenderman because whenever I end up thinking about him before I go to sleep, I get no sleep at all. It’s not that hard if you actually pay attention in class and do the homework. So when I see kids who can’t do this, it really pisses me off. (Courtesy of J. Sanabria)
