Huntsman’s Famous Patrons

A Reputation of Excellence Huntsman is fortunate to boast the most extraordinary clients on Savile Row. Throughout the past 170 years, we have been the tailor of choice to Kings, Queens, Princes, Dukes, heads of state, designers, movie and rock stars, politicians and sportsmen; ladies and gentlemen with impeccable taste, all seeking the rewards of the Huntsman bespoke experience and create their own take on the iconic Huntsman look. From our extensive hall of fame, we’ve selected some of our best known and most loved patrons.

Our Royal Patronage In 1886, the company earned its first Royal Warrant as Leather Breeches Maker to HRH the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). This was swiftly followed by that of Queen Victoria’s second son HRH Prince Albert, Duke of Saxe Coburg Gotha in 1876 and Queen Victoria herself in 1888. The company had by this point established itself as the premier destination for riding and country attire, a reputation which was retained throughout the twentieth century.

Huntsman & Hollywood Gregory Peck Gregory Peck one of Hollywood’s greatest and most elegant film stars wore Huntsman for most of his sartorial needs. Our cutters and tailors produced over 160 orders for the iconic actor, both on and off screen. Gregory’s passion for Huntsman has been passed down to his family. Gregory’s patronage has inspired exhibitions, collaborations and among many house cloths, the exclusive centenary cloth; the Peck 62 jacket cloth.

Huntsman & Hollywood Katherine Hepburn Known as much for her daring androgynous style as her acting prowess, Huntsman was the firm which outfitted Ms Hepburn in some of her iconic trousers.

Huntsman & Hollywood Paul Newman This leading man was introduced to the firm in 1971. Among his orders, he bought a single breasted drab check suit and a single breasted grey suit – both in the famous Huntsman waisted fit. Newman’s legacy became the inspiration Huntsman’s Rolex with the Newman Daytona featuring our iconic house tweed on the dial.

Huntsman & Hollywood Elizabeth Taylor Elizabeth Taylor chose Huntsman as the tailor for two of her husbands, more more notably for herself. Among her orders are notably a striking pair of yellow nylon capri trousers.

Huntsman & Hollywood Bing Crosby Crosby was a regular visitor to Huntsman whenever he visited London in the late 1950s and in the 1960s. Most of his tailoring orders were for his sporting and country pursuits, including check tweed sports and country coats, cavalry jodhpurs and a checked tattersall waistcoat, however, he also ordered a grey Ascot morning coat for formal occasions and the Season.

Huntsman & Hollywood Nicole Kidman Huntsman created a striking three piece trouser suit for Ms Kidman when she was guest speaker at the Woman In The World conference. The Kidman tweed, designed for this commision, is a barleycorn tweed with rust and magenta highlights.

Huntsman & Hollywood Clark Gable Clark Gable was one of Hollywood’s best-dressed men, and he was a loyal customer of Huntsman from 1953 to 1959. His orders range from double breasted smoking jackets, to over coats and an array of waistcoats. In 1953, MGM chose the company to make his costumes for the African-set drama, Mogombo, which co-starred Ava Gardner. The costumes we made for him included fawn worst cavalry jodhpurs, a single breasted fawn tweed suit and grey flannel trousers, to name but a few.

Famous Musicians Eric Clapton A keen sportsman, Huntsman has made several shooting suits for Eric Clapton using his own signature tweed.

Famous Musicians David Bowie In 2002 David Bowie joined the legacy of Huntsmen when he commissioned an ornately embroidered coat. Designed in collaboration with Alexander McQueen, the garment is now part of Huntsman’s archive.

Famous Musicians Charlie Watts Charlie Watts has been a friend and patron of Huntsman for many years. His extensive collection of Huntsman suits inspired one of our exclusive Centenary Cloths, the 100 Springfield Stripe which takes inspiration from a suit cut 30 years ago!

Designers in Huntsman Coco Chanel Fashion icon and design revolutionary Coco Chanel chose Huntsman to create her riding garments.

Designers in Huntsman Hardy Amies Hardy Amies himself came to Huntsman for clothes, and – in March 1951 – even for a yard of white linen. Between 1976 and 1979, his tastes ranged from dark blue grey worsted flannel suits, to waisted navy cashmere ensembles, and he was especially fond of spotted fresco suits. The couturier did not restrict his Huntsman commissions to formal wear, and ordered a number of pairs of denims from us – in fawn, regulation blue – and pink.

Designers in Huntsman Marc Jacobs Of all of the suits cut for Marc Jacob, it was Huntsman’s honour to be the bespoke tailor to dress him for his wedding in 2019. Jacobs took Huntsman’s house style and added his own flair, with exaggerated lapels.

Designers in Huntsman Alexander McQueen In 2002 Alexander McQueen teamed with Huntsman to create his own bespoke collection of menswear. McQueen chose Huntsman as he recognised ‘the best of the best’ in Bespoke Tailoring. Huntsman also cut suits for McQueen personally.
