How has faith and religious thought shaped our modern world? If this is a question that intrigues you, then you should be studying Theology at Huron.

Theological study is one of the oldest intellectual activities but also one of the most relevant for our world today. It will help you to understand how religious issues evolved historically and continue to influence contemporary life and culture.

Drawing on the perspectives of philosophy, linguistics, literature and the social sciences, Theological Studies at Huron lead to engagement with issues such as inequality, justice, poverty, environmental degradation, violence, racism, colonialism and anti-Semitism, and explores how challenges like these may be addressed.

Convinced that you want to study Theology at Huron but uncertain about your career prospects? Many students do go on to a career in ministry or in teaching. But many others do not. They choose to find satisfying and rewarding careers in fields that complement their interests and aptitudes. Their knowledge and keen analytical skills are appreciated by many employers. This four-year program is offered through Huron’s Faculty of Theology in cooperation with the Faculty of Arts and Social Science. You may also choose to combine your module in the B.Th. program with another module from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science. Theology at Huron offers students an opportunity to study comparative religion, philosophy, theology, ethics, history and biblical studies in an interdisciplinary context, promoting creative thought and critical engagement in courses that encourage discussion, reflection, research, experiential learning and community involvement.

Gain insight into religious and theological issues in light of the current events that impact our world. Examine critical social issues, such as human rights, violence, and the environment. Study biblical interpretations from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Explore the distinctive and mutually enlightening connections and relationships among Judaism, Christianity and Islam, the three Abrahamic Religions. Theological study brings the best of human thinking into engagement with what it means to seek and experience the presence of the divine in our world. It opens a world of intellectual, spiritual and ethical endeavours, and leads to many fields of study and work.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES The hallmark of a Huron education is the undergraduate access to authentic research opportunities normally only possible at the graduate level on other campuses. As a Huron student you will be able to conduct independent research with the mentorship of faculty members and participate in active learning opportunities as an integrated part of your course work. Huron’s professors are renowned scholars whose research informs all our programs of study and creates course offerings that are unique to Huron. They are also dedicated teachers, keen to ensure that their students succeed at Huron and in life.

COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING (CBL) OPPORTUNITIES Deepen your understanding of a subject or prepare yourself for work in that field. Community-Based Learning connects the classroom to the community and the community to the classroom. Huron offers a range of unique opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom to practical, real-world settings through internship and placement programs. Across all faculties and disciplines, Huron students are able to take advantage of experiential learning programs that enhance education with experience and experience with education.

EXCHANGE OPPORTUNITIES Huron has over 20 formal exchange agreements with universities around the world. That’s in addition to all of the resources and agreements provided through Western’s main campus International and Exchange Student Office. Study in Austria, Belgium, Belize, China, France, Japan, South Korea, Malta, Mexico, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Tanzania, Turkey or the UK. Include a term/semester or a full year of study abroad while at Huron and you will return with an understanding of your place in the world, as well as valuable language skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, a great education and memories that will last a lifetime.


Cool Courses In addition to our core programs and courses, the Faculty of Theology offers some thought-provoking courses that cover a range of compelling topics and themes. Here are just a few examples: Religious Studies 1010 – Religion, Theology and Global Issues: Introduction of religious studies and theology

from a global perspective. Topics include theological and religious perspectives on: culture(s), politics, economics, sexuality, violence, identity and community, and spirituality.

Religious Studies 1015 – Religion and Difference:

An introduction to religion and theology, this course considers the way religious beliefs and practices draw distinctions, create boundaries, and establish limits. In addition to exploring how these lines are drawn, and why they matter, we consider strategies to close the distance these domains create in everyday life.

Religious Studies 2630 – Myth in the Near East:

An examination of mythological traditions of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Canaan and Israel, asking: What is myth? What is the relationship between myth and social realities? Texts addressed will include Babylonian, Egyptian, and biblical creation accounts, flood narratives, the Epic of Gilgamesh, and stories about death and the underworld.

Religious Studies 2715 – Body, Religion and the Sacred:

Community-based learning Research learning

This course will examine how religious concepts of the body interact with contemporary conceptions of gender, tradition, culture and sexuality. The course will look at art, movement, liturgy and ritual, as well as medicine, science, and philosophy.
