The Huron Advantage
An Exceptional Education
Huron University College offers students an exceptional liberal arts experience. To study at Huron University College means to become part of one of the oldest university communities in Canada — but also one of the most forward-thinking, globally oriented and intellectually challenging. No matter what you choose to study at Huron, your Huron degree will provide the knowledge and practical skills needed for success in the 21st century.
Prepare to be challenged and enlightened. Huron is known for academic excellence, a place for asking the big questions, gathering ideas and making the most of your intellectual potential. This is important because acquiring an education is not just about choosing an area of study or a career to pursue — it’s about your life and about you as an individual person. What qualities do you want to develop? What leadership role do you want to play? It all begins when you start asking those questions in your first term at Huron. Proud History
Huron was first established as a theological college in 1863 and is Western’s founding university. Today we are a university within a university, an affiliate of Western with a distinct and enviable advantage — Huron is one of Canada’s premier small liberal arts campuses. We take pride in our 150 years of teaching excellence.

4th year Honors Specialization in History with a Minor in Environment and Culture (Western) Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School London, Ontario “ I would recommend Huron to anyone wishing to truly engage with the material they are taught. Huron provides an exceptional learning experience, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent here.”
Huron may be one of North America’s smallest universities, but it is big in all the ways that matter — it is a friendly, community-minded liberal arts campus that deliberately maintains a small student population to ensure that every student receives an exceptional undergraduate experience. A small campus definitely has its advantages: smaller class sizes, a supportive peer community, accessible, attentive faculty and staff, and unparalleled opportunities to get involved in research and experiential learning as well as in campus life. You are never just a number at Huron. First-Class Faculty
In a recent survey of graduating students, over 90% of Huron students said that their instructors took an active interest in their learning. In fact, “mentorship” is the word most often used to describe our faculty’s approach to teaching. Huron’s professors are approachable and accommodating, and committed to seeing you succeed. Choose your goal; our dedicated faculty want to help you get there. Beyond the Traditional Classroom

The Value of Research
Undergraduate Research Opportunities The Hallmark of a Huron Education One of Huron’s distinct advantages is our ability to offer students the most extraordinary opportunities to conduct original research or to participate in faculty-led research projects at the undergraduate level. This is exciting because authentic research opportunities for undergraduates are rare, especially at large institutions with graduate programs. Huron is an undergraduate university; but it is our comparatively small campus and our dynamic, student-centred faculty that make this early focus on research truly possible, setting Huron apart from many other universities.
As a Huron student, you will be able to conduct independent research with the mentorship of faculty members and participate in active learning opportunities as an integrated part of your course work. The research skills acquired at Huron will prepare you for graduate school, professional schools, and for every career path after graduation. Research skills are skills for the future.
Learn and Earn: Research Assistants Through Huron’s Centre for Undergraduate Research and Learning (CURL), paid or volunteer Research Assistant positions are available within various departments, from history and psychology to the arts. These contracts usually run from the beginning to the end of the academic year. Students can also choose to complete an Honors Thesis in their fourth year — a great foundation for graduate studies. There are also a number of conferences that Huron students have attended to present their research and findings, also quite rare at the undergraduate level.

Going to a smaller school like Huron opens up these kinds of valuable opportunities that would be rare elsewhere!”
Huron’s professors are renowned scholars whose research informs all our programs of study and creates course offerings that are unique to Huron. They are also dedicated teachers, keen to ensure that their students succeed at Huron and in life. 19

Community-Based Learning Picture the communities surrounding Huron University College as one very large and exciting classroom, full of resources and assets that could deepen your understanding of a subject or prepare you for work in that field. Community-Based Learning (CBL) connects the classroom to the community and the community to the classroom. Across all faculties and disciplines, Huron offers a range of unique opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom to practical, real-world settings through internship and placement programs. CBL opportunities are designed in collaboration with community partners, and often help to address an issue of concern or fill a need. Over the years, Huron students have offered their energy and their knowledge to many local communities, institutions, not-for-profits and businesses to make a positive difference in the lives of others while gaining valuable experience in their field. Huron is a special place, a microcosm of the world, but stepping outside the campus to connect and engage with the wider community — well, there’s nothing quite like it!

This course combines independent study with public outreach and community participation, ideal for students who want to learn about education-based responses to global inequalities. During the term, students work with the local chapter of World University Services Canada (WUSC) to develop public education events on themes of youth and development, education for community empowerment, and reducing barriers to education. Students also participate in WUSC’s International Forum, an unprecedented opportunity to meet peers and experts who are making change in their own communities. Students in this course are also eligible to apply for a three month internship with Students Without Borders.
World University Services Canada Huron WUSC is a nationally-recognized local chapter of World University Services Canada, one of Canada’s oldest student-led development organizations. Student members of Huron WUSC come from every program at Huron, and work with Faculty supervisors to support WUSC’s mandate to promote development through education. Each year Huron WUSC participates in the national organization’s Student Refugee Program, sponsoring a student to come to Canada as a permanent resident in order to complete their studies at Huron. Based on principles of equality, the program provides access to new skills for student participants, and supports the educational achievements of sponsored students. Students who participate in Huron WUSC become part of an international network of youth promoting educational opportunities for young people. On campus, Huron WUSC members are responsible for developing peer-to-peer supports for a new Huron student each year, work with the national WUSC office in Ottawa, collaborate on public education and fundraising campaigns, take roles on the executive, promote Huron WUSC on campus, and are eligible to attend WUSC’s Annual Forum focussed on youth-led development. Huron WUSC is a tremendous opportunity for any student who seeks a challenging and rewarding opportunity to engage with the community.

Huron’s Dining Hall
Huron’s Dining Hall Meal Plans Meal plans are required for all students living in residence. Two meal plan options are available for first-year students. These plans are based on a “declining balance” system. As a meal plan holder, you will have a set amount of funds available to purchase meals at any of the Huron food service locations, including selected vending machines located throughout the Huron campus. As food is purchased, the available balance declines equal to the amount that has been spent.
Just steps from Western and located right on the Huron campus is our Dining Hall. Freshly renovated, the Huron Dining Hall offers convenience as well as delicious, varied cuisine. The dining hall is air-conditioned, smoke-free, wireless, and utilizes, whenever possible, sustainable and locally grown products.

Downtown London
A River Runs Through It The Thames River, that is, a beautiful Canadian heritage river that supports an astonishing variety of recreational activities, like boating. So if canoeing or rowing is your thing, welcome to London. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike, bike, camp, picnic, swim or ski. Pick up a copy of the city’s bike map or find out about the city’s local food movement.
Catch a Game In addition to those terrific Mustang teams and the state-of-the-art facilities right on campus, you might want to check out what the City of London has to offer in terms of sports, because Londoners love sports and London has some great teams. Catch a London Knight’s Game (OHL) or cheer on the London Majors of the International Baseball League. For soccer enthusiasts there’s the Forest City London Soccer Club and the London Lightning basketball team for those who love Canada’s “other game.”
London is located in the heart of southwestern Ontario between three of the Great Lakes (Erie, Huron and Ontario) and surrounded by the fields and farms of the Carolinian Forest Region, one of the most biologically diverse regions in all of Canada.
Connect with the City This mid-sized city is an economic powerhouse, where established businesses and exciting new entrepreneurial ventures — including a growing technology and gaming sector — thrive, employing a dynamic workforce and offering Huron students a variety of inspiring community-based learning opportunities. This is also a city with a big heart and a strong not-for-profit sector. As a Huron student, you will have so many opportunities to get into the community, work with local organizations and residents and participate in London life.
