OямГcial match programme of WaiBOP United

Home on The Range Editorial comment — Josh Easby

Something remarkable happened in the dying stages of that memorable last game at John Kerkhof Park. The scores were tied 3–3 and I think most would have settled for a draw after WaiBOP United had clawed their way back from going behind three times. But the spirit in the side defied such logic. The players had the character and desire to keep forging forward in the 27–degree heat. The 571 crowd responded by gradually building in noise and bursting into a WaiBOP, WaiBOP chant. As added time began, Cambridge's own Robbie Greenhalgh threaded a pass to Fergus Neil who nipped into space and calmly slotted the winning goal. You couldn't have scripted it better. It was right in front of the Carters Stands, filled with cheering fans, and on cue, Neil headed for the corner flag to perform a celebratory dive. Greenhalgh was the first there and teammates joined the pile. The supporters in the Good George Hospitality Area went wild beside them. You could sense the crowd and players willing the game to end until the ref's whistle let our emotions loose. We cheered with relief and joy. The Canterbury players fell to the ground, devasted at the turnaround in this game. Our players hugged each other. They turned to the crowd and clapped. The fans returned the gesture and the bond between these players and their supporters was complete. Surely, this is football at its best when we go home believing we've shared more than 2

a game; we've shared something greater. Such a match atmosphere is expected at the great stadia of the world where professional teams play week in, week out before tens of thousands of people. It's more difficult to create with a relatively new team playing for only the sixth time at its home in Cambridge. But I sense we turned a corner at 4.48pm on Saturday January 14 when Neil, Greenhalgh and Co. celebrated that goal.

From the Dug Out A coach’s perspective — Peter Smith

Hello, everyone, and welcome back to John Kerkhof Park. Today is the second leg of our double header against the league’s top two sides. Team Wellington will present as much of a challenge for us as Auckland City last Sunday, probably even more so, in fact, as they’re top of the league and will want to stay there. Our trip to Kiwitea Street was everything we expected it to be. The lads worked hard and competed well against a top side and we left with a good understanding of our capability and the areas we need to improve if we’re to get

results against the best in the league. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to Matt, his players and support staff. Team Wellington is showing what needs to be done to take on and beat the Auckland City’s of this world. It’s a template the rest of us should take serious note of. Today, it’s great we get to test ourselves against the best.

Fergus Neil Profiling our goalscoring full back — Bruce Holloway

Photo: Grant Stantiall

Bruce Holloway , chairman of Melville Utd, has been following national league teams for nearly 40 years

Before WaiBOP's previous home game, Fergus Neil had played 57 matches in the ASB premiership — and never scored once. So it was a drought–breaker of astonishing proportions when the 22–year–old — in his first season with WaiBOP — chimed in with two goals, including a dramatic 90th minute winner against Canterbury at John Kerkhof Park. It capped what was perhaps the first truly great national league occasion at Cambridge. And to find a matching moment when a Waikato right back has scored two goals in a national league match you'd probably have to go back to Paul Thompson with Waikato United in 1992 — the year Neil was born. "It was a special day," Fergus said. "It was especially brilliant to hear the fans chanting at the end."

With WaiBOP a goal down Fergus felt he had licence to bomb forward against Canterbury. "For the first goal the ball's come of Freddy's (Federico Marquez) head and I've been able to finish in the bottom corner. "The timing of the goal (90th minute) was the big thing with the second. We were going for the win, so I thought 'why not?' in again pressing forward. Robbie (Greenhalgh) has flicked the ball behind their defence, on the edge of the box, and luckily the keeper has gone the other way. "It gives you the world of confidence to get a couple of goals — I can’t wait to go again." Fergus has been based in Papamoa for the summer, working for WaiBOP, after having been in the Hawke's Bay squad for the past five summers. "There were changes going on at Hawke's Bay this season and in signing for WaiBOP I saw it as an opportunity to try something new." He also tried something really different last winter, when he spent a season with Kingston in the Canadian Soccer League in Ontario. "The standard wasn't quite as good as our national league but it was an incredible experience." At this stage Fergus hasn't finalised plans with the 2015 winter, though if accepted

into a teaching course, will return to Napier City Rovers, where he has been a fixture for a number of seasons. As for the rest of the summer, he says making the playoffs for the first time remains the overall team goal. "And for us defenders (and keeper) the objective game by game is to try and keep a clean sheet." Though perhaps those priorities need a slight rethink when you consider half the team's goals this summer have now come from the back four. Fergus nominates his father, Jim, as his biggest football influence. Jim is of Scottish heritage (though Fergus was born in Queenstown) and has been quite a ground–hopper following his son around the various national league venues — and will no doubt be in the crowd again today.

And as for fullbacks he has tried to model his game on, Fergus is very keen on former German skipper Philipp Lahm, who was perhaps the best of his generation. Though even the great Lahm was mutton when it came to goalscoring, managing just five in 113 appearances for Germany. That's an achievable goals–to– appearances target for any right back to try and beat.

Football Dad A soggy start

Vertical rain drove across the park in Small Rural Town. Football Dad trudged wearily along, his gumboots squelching through the mud. The Youngest One gripped his hand tightly: “This field’s a bit soggy,” she observed. “I can’t even see the lines on this pitch.” Football Dad tried to take a gulp of his take–away coffee. It burnt his tongue. The Youngest One was bursting with excitement, despite the underfoot conditions and incessant precipitation. “What’s the worst thing that’s gonna happen? I’m gonna get muddy,” she remarked. Weird Lady was in the distance, flapping her arms and trying to direct the traffic of 10 kids. A boom of thunder overhead as Football Dad and The Youngest One got nearer the team. “Oooooooohhhhh…thunder!” screeched The Weird Lady. “That’s exciting!” A brave mother, clad head to toe in yellow wet weather gear and freezing worker’s white gumboots, tried to offer advice just as Football Dad reached the group: “You might want to get them warmed up — it’s wet and cold. I don’t want my son getting sick.” Weird Lady ignored her completely. Football Dad pulled The Youngest One aside: “Okay. Don’t be nervous. Stay calm. Remember what we talked about — pay attention to the game, try hard, stick with the kid you’re marking. You remember what marking is, don’t you?” “Yes!” she said gleefully. “That’s the player who is in the other team who is kinda like

my partner, but who I want to get the ball off. Right?” “You got it,” said Football Dad, a little tear welling up in his left eye. “You got it.” The Youngest One made Weird Lady’s first starting line–up, assigned the hitherto unknown position of “outside rear left”. “Sounds like the location of a truck tyre,” Football Dad muttered to himself as he watched The Youngest One meander to a position somewhere near the goalbox. An extremely small man from Small Rural Town strode purposely onto the pitch, wearing the home club’s coaches jacket from approximately 1988. “Awwwwwwright kiddies,” he bellowed in a Birmingham accent. “Let’s play fitbah!” An unnecessarily long blast on his whistle signalled the start of The Youngest One’s debut match. “Go go go!” screeched Weird Lady, accompanying her squawk with a further elaborate arm wave. “Off you go, get the ball. Get a goal, woohoo!” Football Dad emitted another long, slow moan. A flash of lightning and another loud crack of thunder overhead. His headache – spawned by a very late night at the clubrooms at the annual poker tournament – worsened dramatically as the rain got harder. This was going to be a very long 30 minutes.

Our new women's FDO WaiBOP Football has appointed former northern league player Holly Nixon as the region's new Women's Football Development Officer. Nixon has a strong background and pedigree in the game and brings key leadership skills and football knowledge to the role. "I'm delighted to be part of the WaiBOP Football team at what is an exciting time for women's football in New Zealand," she said. "The women's game is growing throughout the country and the WaiBOP region is no different. "We've got some excellent players here, as evidenced by Claudelands Rovers' continued success in the NRFL as well as our region's U–15 team winning their National Age Group Tournament just before Christmas," enthused Nixon. Having played for Claudelands Rovers in the Women's NRFL, including being a

member of the 2012 championship side, as well as coaching the Hamilton Girls High School's 1st XI, Holly is well versed in the challenges facing the women's game, along with its potential, in New Zealand. She has undertaken a Bachelor in Management Studies, majoring in Marketing, and a Bachelor in Sport and Leisure Studies at Waikato University. She is also a dedicated and disciplined rower.

Team Wellington break up Auckland's monopoly

Team Wellington have made a major contribution to this year's ASB Premiership by demonstrating that it's not private race between two Auckland sides. Having made the Grand Final last season, the side has proven it was no fluke by taking the lead this summer, and effectively throwing down the challenge to the rest of the sides to catch them. The team has added to its squad with signings such as former Phoenix striker Paul Ifill and All White Ian Hogg, as well as retaining other full internationals Cole Peverley and James Musa. COACH — Matt Calcott Calcott (40) became Team Wellington coach in mid–2011 after proving himself in the Central League. As head coach at Western Suburbs, he landed two Central League titles and enjoyed ASB Chatham Cup success as assistant coach. He and a clutch of players moved to Miramar Rangers and won the 2010 Chatham Cup and then followed that with a Central League title in 2011.

PLAYER TO WATCH — Paul Ifill (right) With 341 appearances and 58 goals for English Championship clubs Millwall,

Sheffield United (who paid $1.6 million for him) and Crystal Palace ($1.5 million), Ifill has played more than 100 times for the Phoenix before injury forced him to rethink his plan to regain fitness for one more shot at A–League play. We're fortunate he's taken the option of playing in the ASB Premiership, giving fans throughout the country the chance to see in the flesh a player who less than 10 years ago was playing an FA Cup Final for Millwall against a Manchester United with Cristiana Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Ruud van Nistelroy, Paul Scholes and company. ALL WHITE TO WATCH — Ian Hogg All White Ian Hogg signed for Team Wellington in this month’s transfer window, becoming the side’s third full international (others are former Fulham player James Musa and Cole Peverley). Hogg has played club football in New Zealand (including Wellington Phoenix), North America (Portland) and Vanuatu (FC Amicale), and went to the FIFA Club World Cup with Auckland City in 2009, being named in the end-of-tournament team alongside the great Lionel Messi. Hogg has represented New Zealand at multiple age group levels including attending both the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics with the New Zealand Under 23 side. He scored on his All Whites debut against El Salvador, and currently has six caps.

Our Chosen Charity WaiBOP United backs Macular Degeneration New Zealand

Cambridge's Pete Lewis may one day owe his sight to reading The Range at a WaiBOP United match last summer. The lead singer of rock band 8 Steps to Madness and a social footballer, Lewis self–tested his vision using the simple test on this page. As a result, he sought medical advice and is now taking preventative procedures to minimise the risks associated with Macular Degeneration. The condition causes progressive loss of central vision but the peripheral vision is not affected. It is the leading cause of severe vision loss. One in seven people over the age of 50 years is affected in some way and the incidence increases with age. "I'm really glad I did the test and followed up with the doctor," Lewis said. "Everyone should do the test — it's really simple." Amsler Grid The Amsler grid is a useful tool to detect vision problems resulting from damage to the macula (the central part of the retina). How to do it: 1. Cover one eye, then focus on the dot in the centre. 2. Do any of the lines look wavy, blurred or distorted? 3. Are there any missing areas or dark areas in the grid? 10

WaiBOP United fan and rock signer Pete Lewis — "Everyone should do the test." 4. Don't forget to test both eyes. 5. If you see wavy, broken or distorted lines, or blurred or missing areas of vision, you may be displaying the symptoms of Macular Degeneration. Contact your doctor or optometrist immediately. What’s happening in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty

James McOnie, from television's The Crowd Goes Wild, proved to be the wild card (in more ways than one) when he turned out for the FIFA U–20 World Cup All Stars against the Cambridge Red Devils in a fun game at John Kerkhof Park. McOnie, who grew up in Pirongia, not far from Cambridge, teamed up with former

All Whites Michael Groom, Ken Cresswell and James Bannatyne, Aldershot Town legend Jason Chewins, The Soccer Shop's Shane Comber and Hamilton East MP David Bennett to squeek home 10–0 in a closely fought game. The Devils fielded their own 'name' player — film and television actor Joel Tobeck (Sons of Anarchy, Xena Warrior Princess, Underbelly). The All Stars are playing occasional games to highlight the opportunity coming our way in June to see some of the world's best young players when they come to New Zealand for the FIFA U–20 World Cup which kicks off on May 31. Hamilton's Waikato Stadium will host eight matches.

ASB Premiership Wrap Latest action from the league

After 11 rounds (including byes and re–arranged fixtures), two things have become clear in this summer's ASB Premiership. Unless something drastic happens at either club, Team Wellington and Auckland City look certainties for the play–offs. The second thing to emerge is that with the exception of bottom–placed Southern United, every other team is in with a shot of filling the third or fourth spots in the play–offs. The league table has become a game of its own, with supporters having to take into account the games in hand and who their team's remaining opponents are. Despite losing 3–2 at Auckland City's Kiwitea St last Sunday, WaiBOP United can still make a run at the play–offs, knowing their last three fixtures are all against sides in the bottom half. Meanwhile, Tem Wellington come to Cambridge as league leaders having despatched Hawke's Bay United 1–0 last weekend thanks to a 73rd minute goal from Jarrod Smith, while a large crowd turned up to watch Paul Ifill make his debut. Canterbury United moved into third place with a 3–1 win against Southern

United, thanks to goals from Shawn O'Brien, leading goalscorer Aaron Clapham and substitute Ryan Stanley, despite a late goal from Southern's Tom Jackson. Almost 1,000 spectators in Whangarei saw Wanderers SC climb into fourth spot as they overcame Wellington Phoenix 2–1. Andre de Jong's 15th minute effort and a 74th minute goal to Te Atawhai Hudson– Wihongi were enough to beat off the challenge of Phoenix who pulled a goal back with ten minutes to go through Jason Hicks. Waitakere United had the bye of the round. — Source: www.NZFootball.co.nz
