never wanes – at the top of the antiques market, as with the property and classic car markets, the highest quality items continue to sell for record prices, and car boot sales are now a certified national pastime with most counties hosting larger events each year. Arts and antiques fairs are big business too, with the Newark International Antiques & Collectors Fair now a world-renowned event. The largest event of its kind in Europe, and held at the Newark and Nottinghamshire Showground, the event attracts up to 2,500 stands, with thousands of dealers and buyers coming from across the world every other month. This alone shows the popularity of the arts and antiques market on every level, from the grass roots to the record-breaking money exchanges of Sotheby’s and Christie’s. But, whether small fry or large fry, when looking to purchase for the first time, it is always advisable to do one’s Lyubov’ Popova, Painterly architectonic (1917) homework and research what you National Gallery of Victoria - Winter Masterpieces Glourious Galleries p.23 are buying or selling beforehand.

So, why not explore the many car boot sales, auction houses or art galleries that these fair isles have to offer. It may seem a daunting prospect, but when visiting a professional event for the fi rst time there are always specialists on hand to offer friendly, comprehensive advice and to help you when considering potential purchases (or sales). Demand for arts and antiques has stayed strong throughout economic downturns and, in an industry now fully embracing the Internet age, buyers from all areas of the market are in a much stronger position than before. But, monetary gains and losses aside, if you have an interest in the fi ner things in life, the age-old advice of ‘look for something that you can appreciate, rather than something that just appreciates’, will always stand you in good stead. Whatever your interest, be it interior design, antique furniture, vintage objet d’art or renovating your period home, get out there and explore all the arts, antiques and collectibles the UK has to offer. TEN YEARS OF BREAKING RECORDS AT ADAM PARTRIDGE Promotional feature
OCTOBER 2018 MARKS the tenth year of independent trading for Adam Partridge Auctioneers & Valuers. Originating from humble beginnings in a building attached to the back of a pub in Congleton, the company now has two auction houses, in Cheshire and Liverpool, as well as a valuation office in Altrincham, making it one of the leading auction houses in the north west of England. The man behind the brand was already known to the public having appeared as an antiques expert and auctioneer on programmes such as Flog It!, Bargain Hunt, Dickinson’s Real Deal and Cash In the Attic.

“Obviously, going out on my own was a huge risk,” states Adam, “especially given that it was at the height of a recession.” But it has obviously paid back in spades. Thanks to a combination of Adam’s popularity, expertise and the ever-growing world of online auctioneering, Adam Partridge Auctioneers & Valuers is continuing to thrive. The Cheshire Saleroom holds several internet records including the most registered bidders for a sale and features in the top ten for the total registered bidders per auction and total registered bidders. Not a poor achievement when taking into account Adam is competing against some of the biggest and longest-
standing auction houses in the country. But Adam believes it is the knowledge that his team possesses that puts the Cheshire and Liverpool salerooms head and shoulders above his competitors: “The amount of expertise in our offices is phenomenal. We have a fantastic array of valuers who have a wide range of specialisms, including silver, coins, militaria and Adam Patridge celebrates ten years of business art”. he allure, excitement and tension of an auction is familiar to most of us. If you haven’t been along to one yourself, there’s no shame in admitting you’ve watched at least one episode of Bargain Hunt. But, if even David Dickinson and his famous tan has managed to pass you by, many of us struggle to resist the temptation of picking up bargains.
Auctions give us this chance: to acquire something we want for a price lower than we thought we’d pay for it. As a result, most auctions become competitive and tense, the adrenaline rush charging bidders as they compete against each other for their coveted prize. This bustling atmosphere is perhaps an auction’s major selling point, and of course

Celia Harvey, a specialist for interiors sales at Christie’s (christies.com) says: “At an auction there is an overwhelming sense of theatre, which you don’t usually get in retail space. There’s also more history and character when it comes to the pieces on offer, including named collections. There is also the added benefit of being able to interact with specialists to explore the pieces further, which means you receive more indepth knowledge before you purchase.” Charlie Thomas, board director and auctioneer at Bonhams (bonhams.com), reveals auction ambience is his favourite aspect of t he job: “As an | PAGE 8 ▶

for the day by following a few simple steps, as Thomas suggests: “Look at the catalogue online beforehand and decide which products you are interested in. There is no need to register if you know you aren’t going to make a sale, but you will need to register if you will be bidding. “Registering requires a copy of a utility bill, a photographic ID, and a credit card. You then become a client and will be given a unique client number,” he adds. Another thing to remember is to do your research on the specific item you are hoping to purchase. “Ensure you receive a condition report of the item, and request condition photographs to make sure you are aware of all the details before attending,” says Thomas. The bidding process is, of course, the most exciting part of the whole day. But it’s important not to get too carried away.

the unique atmosphere of an auction and a real opportunity to assess the condition of what you might be purchasing: “Auctions are great for people to come along, see what they love, and enjoy the atmosphere. “The other advice we have is to park your car fi rst and then go off and get yourself some breakfast while the crowds move past, especially if you are on your own – let the rest of the pack move past and then open your car boot later on – it can end up as a bit of a scrum otherwise.” As many first-timers to the car boot arena fi nd out, there are various aspects to consider and skills to hone when selling – not least that age-old knack of bartering. “It’s friendly fun and bartering comes naturally to everybody,” says Leech. “And, once you start, it can often feel like a natural instinct. However, if it’s your fi rst time and you aren’t a natural, there are still ways to ensure you can maximise your profit.” Firstly, and this may come as no surprise, researching what sells well before the big

Brighton: the home of sunny days, antique stores and the Brighton Car Boot Sale
day can go a long way, as Leech explains: “Go online and see how much what you’re selling is worth. The last thing you want to do is sell it short. “Toys and clothes sell well, and so do household items. Basically anything that’s cheap in relative terms. If you go down to Argos to buy a microwave you’re going to spend £60-70, but at a car boot you might be able to buy one for three quid if you’re lucky. It’s madness to hit the high street and spend a load of money when you can go to a car boot and get things for much cheaper.” However, advice aside, with the ease of selling on online auction sites these days, you may be wondering if there is still money to be made for a first-timer selling their
wares in the traditional manner. “For those selling as a one-off, on average, you can earn anywhere between £80 and £200,” says Leech. “That’s from our experience here, so you can get a lot of ‘one-offs’ who do one day and not come back, but there’s also a lot of people who do it as a business to supplement their income.” And, for Leech, Brighton offers an authentic selling experience: “The thing you get at Brighton, which you don’t get at other car boot sales, are these one-off people – the genuine sellers. A lot of car boot sales these days are more like professional markets than a car boot, but Brighton is still authentic with plenty of bargains to be had.” A SECTION HEADER

PASSIONATE ABOUT ART; DEDICATED TO QUALITY Promotional feature
CONTEMPORARY, CLASSIC OR ornate – The Frame House, supreme in its class, offers the largest range of high quality frames in the North East. Using materials sourced from England, Spain and Italy, and embracing changing trends in fashion and interior design, they have been able to provide a premier picture framing service for more than 30 years.
Owners Paul Herron and Eileen Ryan began with a vision of supplying an unequalled picture framing service for North East England which inspired them to begin the small, family-run business. Their attention to detail and dedication to customers has made them the first stop for world-renowned clientele such as international artists Alexander Millar, Ashley Jackson and Jesus Andreu as well as interior designers HomeSmiths and Helen McArdle, whilst never forgetting the original vision of serving the community. “Art in any form, be it a priceless painting, a photograph or a treasured possession is essential in every household,” says Paul. “It can evoke feelings of nostalgia, a happy memory or a poignant depiction of an era long gone such as in Remembrance Artist Jacqueline Hurley’s War Poppy Collection.”
The simple black frame and triple mount with a hint of red all serve to show off and highlight the image while the hand fi nishing with the barbed wire creates a stark contrast. “Our aim is to provide a frame that complements the piece and is the thread that binds the work together,” Paul adds. The fine art giclée printing service was created 10 years ago in order to truly serve the needs of artists and offer a service above and beyond. It incorporates meticulous colour correction, reproducing subtle variations and colours impossible with other technologies, ensuring the prints are as identical as possible to the original piece. Eileen says: “Art is part of our clients’ souls, we have to be true to their vision.” With highly skilled and dedicated staff working on each framing project, many of whom have been part of the team for over 20 years, your experience with The Frame House will be fi rst rate.

WHY A PORTRAIT IS A WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT
by Sara Stewart founder of Fine Art Commissions Promotional feature
FINE ART COMMISSIONS, based in St James’s, has had the great pleasure of arranging over two thousand portraits since I founded the company in 1997. The clientele in the early years was largely UK based. Now, gallery artists enjoy patronage from an increasingly global market as clients from fast-growing economies revisit traditional techniques almost as a counterbalance to the digital age.
Investment for the family
Although there is a place for conceptual art, as a valid talking point as much as anything else, the skill of a well-executed painting is proven to stand the test of time, as demonstrated in the astonishing auction records recently. Works such as these are admired by the viewer without the need for an art dealer to justify the price tag. Domestic portraits are an investment for the family. The same sentiment applies to a corporate collection. Only a handful of artists in each generation become the Rembrandts of tomorrow. The same applies
to creative talent as a whole, including the famous YBAs of the New Labour decade. The difference between 2007 and now is the increasing demand for high-end portraiture. Clients today are driving the fashion for representational art, choosing to invest in an artist by commissioning a portrait that will be enjoyed by future generations instead of a ‘concept’ that might well never leave the warehouse. The fact that the Royal Academy is heavily marketing life drawing again speaks volumes.
Choosing the best
Fine Art Commissions represents over thirty established artists. Unconstrained by art society rules, the company has been able to pick and choose from a pool of established artists and talented newcomers. The benefit to the client is the knowledge that the price of a portrait they commission is the same whether directly from a studio or via the gallery. The artists enjoy working with us and our clients and as a result continue to maintain a very high standard. Average price of a portrait: £5,000

MANAGING RISK WHEN BUYING AND SELLING ART Promotional feature
TRADING IN ART has traditionally been done on a handshake, but this is changing. You would not buy or sell a house without relying on a lawyer to prepare the contract, would you? The same goes with art, and now buyers and sellers are increasingly turning to lawyers to help them manage the risks associated with expensive works. The art market used to function like a club of like-minded people, but that’s no longer the case. The market is now truly global, and it has become less transparent in the process. Owners of art often rely on agents to protect their privacy, and so do buyers. Apart from not knowing who you’re buying from or selling to, risks include forgeries, buying from someone who does not own the artwork, paintings looted during the Nazi-era and inadvertently buying cultural property unlawfully removed or exported from its country of origin. Let’s take, for example, you buy an artwork attributed to a famous artist and pay a large sum of money for it, only to then discover it is not by that artist at all, will you get you money back?
In England and Wales, the courts have generally held the view that attribution is a matter of opinion, and succeeding in a claim against the seller on the basis others hold a different one is notoriously difficult. If you bought the artwork simply on an invoice, then unless you can prove the seller provided a contractual warranty that the painting is by the artist, your chances of success are low. A lawyer can help you negotiate such a guarantee and see that it is properly recorded in a written contract of sale. Aside from the legal risks, commercial terms vary broadly. Who is meant to pay expenses? How do you know if the agent’s commission is set at an acceptable level? How far can you push negotiations? Like a property lawyer, an experienced art lawyer has seen thousands of these transactions and can guide you. Auction houses, for example, will often tell sellers at auction that their form of selling contract is non-negotiable. Beyond a certain price point, the auction houses will always negotiate because they are keen to secure the consignment for sale. The same is true for private sales agents. If the value of the

art is significant, you will want to know if there is tax to pay and if you can minimize the amount of tax due. If you buy art abroad, there are pitfalls to negotiate that even a savvy art collector might fall into. Legal advice costs money, but so does an insurance policy. ELIZ A BETH JA M ES GA LLERY, established in December 2016, is a contemporary art gallery and boutique gift shop. The gallery is the result of a competition launched by Croydon Council as part of the regeneration of the London borough and to attract new business to the once vibrant community of South Norwood. This is the birthplace of contemporary artist Elizabeth James, and the gallery is located directly across the road from the home she was raised until the age of 21. Elizabeth has strong ties to the area and it has a special place in her heart. Each day she can see her old bedroom window, and
having won the shop rent-free for a year she is now in her second year of service to the community she loves. Prior to Elizabeth James Gallery opening, the space was unused for 20 years. Now, it has been brought to life, offering opportunities to contemporary artists, monthly group exhibitions, workshops and Live Art Saturdays, where artists can create work in the gallery window for three hours. They get to expand their portfolio and visitors are welcome to come along for free to watch the artist and engage with them as they create. “We love having young creatives at the gallery for workshops and school visits and
encourage children to embrace art at an early age,” Elizabeth says. But that’s not all that’s on offer. Elizabeth James is a British lifestyle brand offering limited edition prints, art greetings cards and homeware established in 2013. “The Internet has made the antiques and collectibles sector ver y much an international affair,” says Dan Wade, author at Paul Fraser Collectibles. “But here, as you’ll fi nd elsewhere in the world, the top of the market is marching onwards, while those items in the mid to lower category are more stagnant. “What do I mean by ‘the top of the
market’? Those pieces that are rare and desirable. An example would be James Dean’s autograph. He died young, leaving just a small number of signatures behind, and he has an almost mythical status today. We have a James Dean signed photo for sale right now at £14,500.” The latest Coutts Objects of Desire survey goes some way in providing | PAGE 32 ▶
SPECIALIST INSURANCE FOR COLLECTORS & DEALERS Promotional feature
THE INSURANCE OF collectibles may seem a daunting project because of the huge variety of material people collect. From stamps and all things philatelic, to golf balls, coins and medals, football programmes, boxing gloves, toys, fi ne art and militaria. The list is never ending. However, the insurance is actually remarkably straightforward, with a
common theme in that it covers ‘all risks of physical loss or damage’ and seeks to compensate the collector in the event of this. Cover should include an element away from the home and is easily extended to include overseas exhibitions or displays. The basis of valuation is frequently market value – that is, what it would sell for in the best possible circumstances at the time of the loss but can be retail replacement cost if that is feasible. Many collections begin in childhood and continue building until old age. The whole point is the rarity and unique nature of the pieces make them irreplaceable, so one has to think in terms of market value as the logical compensation. Clarity is everything, both in terms of the scope of the cover and expectations in the event of loss. Speak openly with your insurers or brokers. No surprises on either side is a great maxim for insurance that works when disaster strikes. Quite probably an adequate record is the single most important factor
in making sure the insurance performs well in the event of a claim. Do not think so much in terms of proof of ownership as the practical problem of fi rstly, remembering everything in the collection and, even more significantly, exactly what they are. One must work on a worst-case scenario that the collection has been destroyed or has gone so the records are all there is to work on. They don’t need to be formal and can be as simple as good photographs, hand-written notes or spreadsheets. Imagine sitting with an auctioneer and discussing what estimates to put on the lots. An obvious, but surprisingly often
overlooked point, is to keep this well away from the collection. Both going up in smoke at the same time would be heart-breaking. wardrop.co.uk 01376 563764 john@wardrop.co.uk

an insight into the current demands of collectors, with rare musical instruments being the stand-out performer - rising 16.4% year-on-year. This year though, Wade expects a rise in Apollo 11 memorabilia as the 50th anniversary of the moon landings approaches next year. “Those items actually flown on the mission, such as tiny Stars And Stripes flags, will be particularly in demand,” he says. “We’ve seen something similar following the centenary of the Titanic disaster in 2012. The commemorations bring more buyers into the sector and encourage lapsed collectors to re-engage with their hobby.” But it isn’t just com memorat ive pieces which are expected to increase in popularity and value. “Apple memorabilia is performing superbly well,” says Wade. “Collectors of Apple

Examples include the company’s first computer, the Apple-1, which sells for hundreds of thousands, while the original iPod from 2001 can set you back £500 today if it’s in perfect condition with all the packaging. “Rare autographs in general are also performing well. TIPS ON HOW TO BEGIN INVESTING IN COLLECTIBLES Dan Wade from Paul Fraser Collectibles says: “Spend the most you can afford. Why? Because [generally] when you spend more, you are buying the rarer, more desirable, more valuable objects. These are the ones collectors historically will fight over and be willing to spend significant money on. “Also, only buy things you love. If you love something, chances are others will love it too. Secondly, collectibles are not guaranteed to go up in value. If the worst happens, you still have a piece with a kind of value to you.” hair proving top sellers for auction sites, Wade warns against the prospect of investing time and cash on the weird and wonderful: “There are plenty of wacky areas of collectibles – hair, milk bottles, even dodo bones – but I suggest they make for extremely risky investment propositions. Liquidity is a problem and many of the most esoteric areas lack the hard fi nancial data of autographs or classic cars. “One in this category that has moved into the mainstream is Lego. As a rule of thumb when investing in the brand, stick with large-scale limited edition sets such as 2007’s Millennium Falcon. These sell for around £3,000 today,” he advises. A

If you own a building of historic interest or period home, you may be all too familiar with the Mantra of your local Conservation Officer to “Preserve and enhance” or “Retain and protect” your property. The message is as loud and clear as it is immovable. These are the underlying principles of good conservation practice that you should not ignore. It is the very foundation of established protocol that has sought to successfully protect our building heritage, so that future generations can experience the benefit of our legacy as much as we can today. Your Local Authority Conservation Officer advises on Planning Policy relating to conservation matters as part of the Planning consultation process. They will be appropriately experienced and passionate about the preservation of period buildings and the context of their surroundings. “Preserve and enhance” however, is not a pre-requisite to prohibit altering or extending your home, but a guide to the principal of understanding and appreciating where you live. Good design is not achieved by accident, it is delivered through years of experience and technical knowledge with appreciation of core values to complement your home, giving it life and creating a living breathing home that embraces modern living requirements by engaging traditional values. ASTON WORKSHOP THE THEATRE OF DREAMS
Promotional feature
IT’S A SIMPLE fact that all classic Aston Martins were once hand built. As a consequence, it takes skilled artisans, each with their area of expertise and working as a team to restore an Aston Martin to its former glory. Indeed, with modern materials and manufacturing processes, the results are very often better fi nished, better performing and have greater protection from corrosion and time-related deterioration. In short, ‘better than new’. Aston Workshop are renowned the world over for the quality of their restorations, and with a team of over 30 skilled technicians and decades of experience, they have honed the art of breathing new life into these stunning cars to perfection. Restoration at this level has to be a collaboration between the owner and the technicians involved. Aston Workshop
go to great lengths to communicate the restoration process with the owner, helping them to make informed choices along the way that will culminate in the delivery of a world-class, hand built British legend. Sometimes a full restoration isn’t necessary, but whether it is minor refurbishment or major reconstruction, the process will include four basic elements: 1. Strip and Assess This key stage is essential before any restoration can be adequately scoped and of course costed with any certainty. 2. Reconstruction Whether this is a mechanical (structural) or cosmetic restoration or both, only skilled artisans, using the best tools and manufacturing processes will successfully transform tired bodywork and worn machinery to as good as new. 3. Assembly Bringing the myriad of carefully overhauled and finished

components together, and installing them carefully. Note: engines, in particular, require careful bedding in and adjustment. This takes time and skill as well as fanatical attention to detail. 4. Test and fi nish Only when all the components have been carefully assembled, installed and adjusted do we see a complete car again. Only then will they have the opportunity to undertake the many functional tests, adjustments and retests to reach the car’s full potential. Aston Workshop are rightly proud of the team they have assembled, the new and old technologies they have mastered and their ‘state-of-the-art’ tools and manufacturing facilities employed to create these automotive masterpieces Whether a major restoration, minor refurbishment or engine rebuild, the car is only complete when it is handed over spotless and with a complete record of everything that that has been undertaken.
High quality, fully restored Aston Martins seldom come up for sale, and the fact that over 80% of all Aston Martins survive demonstrates the pride and joy of owning one of these beautiful motoring legends. The iconic nature and history of Aston Martin imparts to every car a desirability reflected in the prices that they command. Throughout the ups and downs of the car market generally, classic Aston Martin values have typically gone from strength to strength over the mid to long-term, this truly is a classic car you can buy with your head as well as your heart. aston.co.uk 01207 233 525 astonworkshop@aston.co.uk

ood and leather steer ing whee l s, s poked whee l s, chrome trim: it’s easy to see why the thought of owning a classic car is so seductive. There is a certain charm about owning a certain model, once at the forefront of modern design and engineering, but now in need of a little TLC. It may come as no surprise then that the world’s most expensive car ever sold at auction was a classic 1962-63 Ferrari GTO 250 Berlinetta, which sold for a record $38 million (£22.8m) back in 2014.

However, it’s not just these types of classics currently appealing to collectors - supporting memorabilia is also becoming increasingly popular. “It’s nostalgia for most people,” says Doug Palmer, founder and owner of Vintage Automobilia (vintageautomobilia.co.uk). “It’s one of those things that helps you relive your youth which is a key attraction: a journey back into the golden age of the 50s and 60s.” Palmer has specifically noted, of all things, that petrol cans are a popular collector’s item: “One of the most popular areas currently is the 1980s going into the very early 1990s – what you might call the ‘retro era’. Back then oil was still sold in metal cans – not like the plastic we have now – and they are cheap. You can pick up a little grease from a sale for as little as five pounds. “And, while it’s not quite as nostalgic as stuff from say, the 1930s, it can be picked up for much less and this is stuff that people are just chucking away. So, if you can fi nd it, buy it while you can.” When the car market is strong and increases in value, the automobilia market is also strong. BRITISH MARQUES RESTORED TO THEIR FORMER GLORY Promotional feature
BASED IN THE Lincolnshire countryside, Richards of England are classic car restoration specialists focusing on Aston Martin, Bentley and Jaguar. Their gated premises contain state-ofthe-art mechanical, fabrication, trim and body workshops and from the initial disassembly to the fi nal detailing, they have all the facilities and expertise needed for classic car restoration in-house. The owner, Paul Richards, left school aged 16 and has been an entrepreneur ever since. Taking out a business loan and teaching himself to upholster cars from books and research, he began
trimming cars for local classic car enthusiasts. Fast forward 12 years, Richards of England now has a highly skilled team capable of carrying out all aspects of classic car restoration. Their head fabricator, for example, has 25 years of experience working at Rolls-Royce and various Jaguar specialists. Paul believes his success at such a young age comes predominately from his approach: personally greeting everyone that comes through the door, working closely with his team and ensuring quality through attention to detail at all times. Until recent times, the majority of Paul’s business came from word of mouth: “I didn’t have time to work on a website so I relied on reputation gained from previous projects and occasional networking at shows.” After working for many years as a classic car trim specialist, Paul became more involved with the restoration process after becoming frustrated with the varying levels of quality elsewhere: “Once you work on a car, your name is
attached to it. It’s frustrating putting in hours of work on an interior for other people’s work to let it down,” he says. Richards of England are currently working on some very exciting projects, for example an original Aston Martin DBS F.I. completely restored and beautifully presented in its rare Azurro Blue. The car is just one of two of its type still running on the original AE Brico electronic fuel injection system and is now being
marketed along with others. Find out more about their services and current projects at richardsofengland.com. For restoration, sales and sourcing enquiries you can also call 01522 685476.

TWO CLASSIC RACING RIVALS GET THE HAYNES TREATMENT IN THESE GREAT NEW BOOKS Promotional feature
HAYNES’ COLLECTIBLE SERIES of motorsport manuals has two new additions from the golden era of sports car racing. The 1980s bore witness to a titanic battle on the tracks between the Teutonic might of Porsche and the quintessentially British Jaguar, and these manuals take you to the heart of the action. The Group C formula introduced in 1982 inspired Porsche to design an allnew car – the 956, powered by a flat-six turbo engine – while Jaguar followed suit in 1985 with the V12-powered XJR-6. Porsche supplied its 956 and later 962 chassis to a wide variety of customer teams, but TWR-Jaguar would be the sole entrant for the Jaguars. The Porsche 956 achieved immediate success, winning Le Mans and the World Endurance Championships for both manufacturers and drivers in its debut year, and rising to dominance to repeat the Le Mans triumph with the 956 and
962 for an unbroken run of six victories. The Porsches achieved the world championship double for five consecutive years and won over 200 races around the world, also contesting the US IMSA championship, in which Jaguar later competed. After two character-building years of rivalry, Jaguar beat Porsche to both world championships in 1987 with the XJR-8, and again in 1988 with the XJR-9, which also took a famous victory at Le Mans. Jaguar would win at Le Mans again in 1990, while a heavily modified Porsche 962 took victory in 1994. Between them, the Porsche 956 and 962, and the Jaguar XJR-9 dominated sportscar racing for over a decade, and today they stir memories and assault the senses wherever they appear. The fascinating stories behind these classic racing rivals are told in two sister titles from Haynes – the Porsche 956 & 962 Manual and the Jaguar XJR-9 Manual,
featuring a wealth of photographs, and insight from the engineers and drivers involved. haynes.com

Decorative too, in styles and sizes to suit almost every taste, it’s no wonder these extraordinary works of scientific art are becoming increasingly popular. With the collectors’ worlds of classic cars and wristwatches having exploded over the past few years, there has been a resurgence of interest in legacy objects with a purpose. Clocks made navigation possible for example. They were used to map the celestial heavens and thus the earth on which we all stand. Latterly they were used to measure the accuracy of their diminutive cousins, the wrist watch. Clocks, and particularly regulators forged from great slabs of brass, were built to the tightest of tolerances and were expensive to produce, making them rare and often beautiful.
At home in traditional surrounds or used to punctuate the most modern of homes, these time-telling works of engineering art will be treasured for generations to come. Jonny Flower at The Regulator Clock Company untangles the rewarding world of historic clock ownership and provides unparalleled, unpretentious advice. If you are looking to invest in a fi ne regulator he would be delighted to hear from you.

Big Ben has been silenced until 2021
Big Ben’s intricate inner-workings
A
We talk to an expert involved in the restoration of Big Ben to find out about this most iconic of British clocks Words Amelia Glean
UNESCO world heritage site, a global architectural icon, and one of the most recognisable buildings in the world, Big Ben is currently undergoing a programme of restoration work. The bongs of our famous clock fell silent for four years in August 2017, with the annual exception of New Year’s Eve and Remembrance Sunday, following an almost unbroken service of 157 years. Paul Roberson, a clockmaker at the Palace of Westminster and one of Big Ben’s caretakers, says: “These works were urgent and vital. If restoration work hadn’t started, it could have caused the tower to
fall into disrepair. We need to ensure we are preserving it for future generations.” As part of the project, the Great Clock itself will be dismantled piece-by-piece with each cog examined and restored. The four dials will be carefully cleaned, glass repaired, the cast iron framework renewed, and the hands will be removed and refurbished. The controversial decision to silence the chimes was made for the safety of those working on the scaffolding, as constant proximity to the Big Ben’s bongs would pose a serious risk to hearing. Yet, this did not stop politicians expressing
their disapproval. Prime minister, Theresa May, publicly commented: “It can’t be right for Big Ben to be silent for four years.” A soundless clock is hardly the country’s most pressing issue, so why did the notion of these works cause such a stir? Standing at 96m (315ft) tall, the Palace of Westminster’s Elizabeth Tower, which is visited by 12,000 people a year, is Britain’s most photographed landmark. “When I was a boy, Trafalgar Square was the place to be on New Year’s Eve, but now it is all based around the bottom of the clock tower,” says Roberson. “I don’t know why it’s become so symbolic, because the main efforts when building the structure were driven towards the Victoria tower, not the
Elizabeth tower.” He adds: “The clock tower is right on the river, which means nothing is hiding its view like many other monuments in London. When you see it in the flesh, you just can’t help but go ‘wow’.” The project, originally priced at £29 million in 2016 and now expected to cost around £60 million, is due for completion in 2021. A
