The former TOWIE star, who now heads a fitness empire, talks exclusively to Celebrity Secrets Interview Suzanne Baum

FROM THE MINUTE the CS crew arrive at our shoot location in the heart of London, we can see just why Lucy turns heads. Not only is she gorgeous, but her dazzling smile is infectious, even after a week of very little sleep! Long gone is the fake tan and heavily made up look from her former TOWIE days; in fact, Lucy’s natural beauty means she hardly needs any make-up at all to make her camera ready. As the face and founder of her Results with Lucy business - it comes as no surprise that the 27-year-old looks the picture of health. Having attracted a huge following of fans through her fitness and nutrition company, set up five years ago, Lucy has made a reputable name for herself in a very tough industry. Even more remarkable is the fact she has managed to shake off her reality TV star tag, and be taken seriously as a businesswoman at the same time.

Lucy, how does it feel to be fronting so many magazines this year? You’re in high demand! ‘It’s very flattering to be asked, and photo shoots and interviews are great fun. I‘ve been doing this sort of thing since the age of 19, so it’s nice to know that I have the luxury of choosing the jobs I want to do now.’ What is it about your Results with Lucy programme that has made it so popular? ‘I think one of the most appealing factors is that it’s an online tool that makes our members feel like they are part of a community, where everyone supports each other. Many people find exercise intimidating, so being able to share it with online members and work out in the comfort of your own home is great. In fact, one of the reasons I set it up was because I had many gym memberships

and never used them. I hadn’t really done any exercise since leaving school - I think I was quite intimidated by it.’ How did you first get the programme going? ‘I started training with a PT called Cecilia, who is now not only my best friend, but my business partner. Her workouts were always different and kept me so engaged that I wanted to share them. So, Cecilia and I just filmed 30 of our favourite workouts and we put them online. Literally overnight they were a massive success, with so many people wanting to follow along.’ It’s a very difficult industry to get a foot in. What made you stand out do you think? ‘I was one of the first celebrities to say I’m not going to do a fitness DVD. Cecilia and I did a lot of research and realised that by sharing our workouts on website platforms, and by adding new routines every week, it would be a lot more appealing than a one-hour exercise DVD that a lot of other celebrities tend to do.’ Tell us a bit more about the business? ‘We’ve got a lovely team and there are 16 of us now. We’ve got 15 PT’s on the website, four nutrition plans and, five years down the line, it has really developed. It keeps people engaged and that’s why they like it. Our followers aren’t going to a class together, but they all talk online and on social media, supporting each other. We have over half a million girls following us, so it’s great to have a support system in place! A lot of our followers are mums and they love it because they can follow us when their kids are asleep and you only need space for an exercise mat! A lot of people use it when they are travelling too, using their mat in a hotel room.’ Does your programme include weights? ‘You can choose what you want to do. There is an option button on the site where you can say what (if any) equipment you have. We have workouts for everyone and all fitness levels. Even if you only have 10 or 15 minutes, there will be a bank of workouts that you can use. We are constantly adding new programmes and new recipes every month, to provide nutritional advice.’

‘As a female

with a reality TV   background,

running a business   can be difficult   at times’

How involved are you in the day-to-day running of the business? ‘Obviously, I do things like photo shoots and press events often, so I’m not in the office all week. But I oversee everything. Nothing goes out without my approval.’ Has it been hard to shake off the reality star status and be taken seriously as a businesswoman? ‘Yes and no. Reality TV is such a massive part of the media world and as a female with that kind of background, it can be hard. There have been times when I have turned up to meetings and they’ve just looked at me in disbelief because I run my own business. You know what though, it’s forced me to work a lot harder.’ Your Instagram messages are full of inspirational quotes; why do you feel the need to post them? ‘I think when you are given a platform with so many followers, and you have young girls looking up to you, you have to be a good role model. If I can make someone feel a little bit better by looking at my posts, even if it’s just one person, I’m happy. With a lot of followers there is a responsibility to give off the right messages and show real images to help spread positivity and educate people. Do you feel under pressure to look good all the time because you’re in the public eye? ‘I would be lying if I said no. As I have a health and fitness business and I’m in the public eye, it’s double the pressure. For me, it’s not just about looking a certain way. Working out and eating well is so important for my mental health, which contributes to me feeling more confident, positive and motivated.’

BURN FAT ANYWHERE

When it comes to food are you careful with what you eat? ‘In the week, I try to be quite good. This morning for example, I ordered an omelette and a smoothie, which is usually accompanied by a black coffee. For lunch, I will have some sort of salad along with protein, and then loads of vegetables. For dinner, I love making home-made curries and stir fries.’

So, you have time to cook? ‘Not always - you should see my Deliveroo bill, it’s huge! You can eat healthy food nowadays, even if it’s a takeaway. Yesterday I ordered half a chicken and a salad as a take away - I had no time to cook!’ What about carbs; do you steer clear of them? ‘I’m not anti-carbs. People often forget that vegetables are carbs too, so it’s not good to avoid them completely! But I tend to avoid processed carbs and I try not to have white bread or pasta. At the weekends, I don’t make any rules. I eat whatever I fancy and if that’s a big bowl of pasta and a chocolate cake, that’s what I’ll eat. I’ll also have a couple of glasses of red wine.’

Ensure your knees are bent at a 90-degree angle

You seem to be juggling a lot - how do you stay motivated? ‘Do you know what, it’s a really hard thing motivation. I would say it’s my number one asked question on Results with Lucy when we do live Q&A’s and emails. For me, personally, I have to have goals; my longterm goal, ultimately, is health. We have one body and we have got to look after it, but it is tough. Motivation is one of those things you

have to be in the right mindset for. I believe if you don’t feel like doing it, don’t force yourself. You will feel good after a workout, but if you really don’t want to do it, don’t worry about it. It’s not the end of the world.’ So, obviously, your boyfriend Ryan Thomas is very fit too – do you train together? ‘Yes, we do actually. It’s quite a recent thing but when he stays at my place we do some Results with Lucy workouts. My PT Cecilia trains us both, so when it was lovely and warm we did circuits in the garden. It’s quite good because we get very competitive, so it makes us both work harder. I do find myself correcting his form sometimes, and he tells me to just let him get on with it!’ Can he keep up with you? ‘I think we have different strengths. Men have a lot more upper body strength, so there’s a lot of things he’s better at, like press ups. But for cardio-based stuff, I’m often better.’ Workwise, what’s next for you? Would you rule out any more TV? ‘I wouldn’t. I’m quite careful with what I pick. I’m very busy, so when I pick a TV job to do it’s because it’s something that I am really passionate about. I would love to take on another challenge though, whether it be TV or not. I love a challenge and that’s exactly why I did Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls – I’ve never looked back.’ What were your thoughts about Big Brother when Ryan told you he was going into the house? ‘We discuss absolutely everything with each other and were on holiday when he first brought it up. I don’t think there was a day that he just told me “I’m doing it”. We spoke about his thoughts on it and just had a good chat about it really. There was a group of us at the time, as we were in Mykonos. We just discussed the pros and cons of it all, and I know he likes a challenge, too.’

Looking back now at what you’ve achieved so far, how does it feel to be the boss of your own fitness empire? ‘I’m proud of myself and I know Ryan and my family are as well. I like to push myself constantly and it was very easy for some to say that the glam girl from Essex can’t climb a mountain or survive on a desert island. WE HIT THE GROCERY AISLES of Waitrose with former Emmerdale actress, Gemma Oaten. The 34-year-old Hull-born TV star, who has recently moved into a new London pad, gave us a sneaky peek of her weekly food shop must-haves. What type of food do you usually buy? ‘I’m not a big cook, but I do try and stay away from ready meals. I’ll buy pre-packaged veg that I can just whack in the microwave, along with a steak because I like protein, and I buy fruit to snack on.’

What’s your biggest guilty pleasure? ‘Crisps and Haribo sweets, definitely!’

‘There’s a good mix of animalbased and plant-based proteins in meat, eggs, hummus and lentils for healthy cells and muscles.’

Are you the type of person to host a dinner party and cook for people? ‘Yes, I love them. But my dinner parties are different. They’re more northern-based and include sausage rolls, pork pies and crisps. But I try to be a bit healthy and fit into London life by getting some hummus.’ Do you check food ingredients before buying? ‘I don’t have any allergies but overcoming an eating disorder means that just being able to eat food is important. I don’t scrutinise packages now – I’ve had years of it. I’ve been in recovery from anorexia now for ten years and it’s nice to see food as an enjoyment, rather than putting a label on a label.’ Gemma shops with Celebrity Secrets’ Lynn

We notice you don’t have any fizzy drinks in your trolley… ‘No, I’m not a big fizzy drinker. I try, especially with singing, to drink water as much as possible. I’ve also picked up some Manuka honey, which I make with lemon and boiling water, which is good for the vocal cords.’ Is it difficult to maintain a healthy diet when working long hours on set? ‘I’m healthier when I’m working because I know that I need to be. When I’m at home learning songs and scripts, it’s easy to just grab a bag of crisps. If I’m performing or acting, I need to be the best that I can be, and look the best that I can. So, I eat breakfast, lots of fruit and lots of high protein snacks during the day.’ What is your go-to food? ‘I do love my protein and a good Sunday roast, but I wouldn’t cook it, I’d go to a restaurant!’ What are you up to at the moment? ‘I’ve started filming my return to Holby City and I recently launched a theatre company

With most diets, we lose weight only to put it all back on again. What is it about your plan that works? ‘Diets don’t work and neither does depriving yourself. You’ll get results to begin with, but when you start eating properly again, you’ll put the weight back on. Eat three good meals a day and do your HIIT for 20 minutes, three to four times a week. You’ll be satisfied and burning fat!’

Why did you write a book based around 30-minute meals? ‘It can be hard to prepare something healthy when you’re short on time, so my book introduces baking, roasts, risottos and morning muffins ready to eat in 30 minutes.’

AS A HUGE FAN of reality TV show The Real Housewives of Cheshire – which focuses on the drama-filled friendships of several wealthy housewives living a life of luxury – I was slightly apprehensive about meeting Dawn Ward. I’ve watched her lunch, shop and pamper herself with her fellow TV stars, but I’ve also seen the rows. I needn’t have worried though as Dawn was so warm and welcoming towards me, going out of her way to ensure I felt at home in her exquisite mansion. The house, often featured in the TV show, is also home to her Skulpt Clinic, which has made a name for itself not only with her fellow housewives, but also with clients who travel all over the world for non-surgical treatments. With a coffee (no champers unfortunately) in hand, we sat down for a quick chinwag! So, Dawn, what’s the most popular treatment your clients book at Skulpt? ‘We do a lot of weight loss treatments like fat melt. You can get an immediate result with it – for up to three months after the treatment you are still able to see a difference. We do a lot of skin tightening, too.’

Do any of your clients get star struck when they see you? ‘Yes! Sometimes they seem so shocked. But I totally trust my managers, so although I am 100 per cent involved in the clinic, I’m not there all the time. Quite often, I get buzzed by the receptionist telling me a client is really keen to meet me, so I’ll pop by.’ Your two eldest daughters pop in and out of the clinic every now and then. What treatments do they have? ‘Darby and Taylor are always in and out when they are at home – I only allow the girls to get their lips done though, as well as facial treatments such as a carbon peel to help look after their skin.’ Do the other housewives ever visit Skulpt? ‘We have Nermina [Pieters-Mekic] in sometimes, and we love having Rachel [Lugo]! They’re both fans of our skin tightening treatments, but recently Rachel came in for a mole removal, which is another service that we offer clients.’ With clients coming from as far as Australia, how do they hear about the clinic? ‘We don’t do any advertising. It’s a strong brand and, of course, it helps a lot that it is often filmed for the TV show, which means that it gets that exposure.’ How often do you have treatments yourself? ‘Not often. I hardly ever have the time!’

What are your future plans for the clinic? ‘We have a Skulpt Academy, where we will continue to educate people to look after their skin. We offer all sorts of private classes, including Botox filler training, eyebrow masterclasses and laser training. I’m so lucky that I have the best team behind me overseeing the clinic and academy, ensuring that everything is run to the best of its ability.’ What makes Skulpt stand out from the rest? ‘Education in this industry is quite poor, as people can easily pass and work without the right qualifications. We want to ensure we train and bring only the best people to the market. There are a lot of clinics out there, bringing lots of good competition, but not excellent ones. My goal over the next few years is to roll out more Skulpt clinics to make the best of non-surgical treatments available all around the country. I’m looking to expand the clinic into other areas, especially in London. THE DAUGHTER of one of the best-known duos on British television, Chloe Madeley is a picture of health. As a nutritionist and personal trainer, she has built a successful career in her own right as a fitness guru. Here, she reveals how exercise has helped her to manage her mental health issues, as well as giving advice on how to tone up those tricky areas. ‘My passion for fitness started with my ex-boyfriend. He was a personal trainer and he asked if he could train me as he was trying to get more female clients. I begrudgingly said yes, but I fell madly in love with it from day one.’ ‘Since then, it’s gone from strength to strength. My fiancé, James, and I have recently been described as Britain’s fittest couple - it’s such a huge compliment and something we have worked so hard for. Dating an athlete is fascinating, I’ve learned so much from him and I think he has learned a lot from me, too. We have a good balance, as I specialise in dietary requirements and he better understands the different training zones.’

EXERICSE IS GREAT FOR MENTAL HEALTH ‘Working out really helps with my anxiety. Anxiety is triggered when cortisol levels increase. It can happen gradually over the course of a few days, or quite suddenly. Exercising helps balance the adrenaline and cortisol within the body, which has really helped me to manage it. That being said, overexercising can push you the other way, so you need an exercise and rest day balance.’

FAT LOSS TAKES TIME ‘Unfortunately, there is no such thing as target fat loss. When we lose fat, we lose it evenly from all over our bodies, but the more stubborn areas are always the last to go. Focus on fat burning by eating a little less than usual and see how your body responds after two weeks. Fat-burning exercises, such as high intensity interval circuits, are also good to build some muscle and increase your metabolic rate.’

I rule my life.’

I STILL HAVE A LIFE ‘I love exercising, but fitness doesn’t rule my life – I’d say I rule my life. Health and fitness is my passion, a job and a hobby. Yes, I train six days a week, but I definitely don’t try to look in shape all year round. If I don’t have a photoshoot, I am not restrictive in any way and I will often sink a bottle of wine with James, or eat an entire tub of ice cream on my own!’

CARBS ARE NOT THE ENEMY ‘I recommend eating carbs before and after exercise for energy and recovery. I count calories myself, and it baffles me that being aware of calories gets a bad rap - it’s simple science. If you eat too much or move too little, you will gain weight. Do you prefer to work out alone or with someone else? ‘I love going to the gym with James [Lock], or hitting up a session with a personal trainer. I prefer to work out with a partner - I always need someone pushing me!’

Aside from having a boob job, would you consider going under the knife? ‘No more, I’m done. I think there is a risk of looking too similar to others, so I won’t be having any more surgery.’

You have a huge following on social media. Do you feel a responsibility to your fans to be real and honest? ‘I feel under pressure to constantly look glam on social media, but I want to try and step back from that and be natural.’

We’re fans of Shane Cooper’s work – why did you get a bum lift from him? ‘I’d heard a lot about it and wanted to see if he could get rid of some little dimples. It was amazing!’ CS

POSTPARTUM WEIGHT LOSS is a hot topic and something that many women struggle with. TV presenter Laura Hamilton is no different. Here, she shares her personal experience of shedding the pounds after giving birth to her second child in 2015. ‘I wanted to lose my baby weight because I’d put on four and a half stone when I was pregnant. The biggest changes I made were cutting out sugar and exercising more. SHE FIRST HIT headlines over 20 years ago with her striking features, but supermodel Caprice is more than just a pretty face. Not only has she branched out into acting, she juggles running her business empire, By Caprice, with raising two sons. Somehow, she also manages to maintain a healthy lifestyle on days when she’s not pigging out on pizza! Caprice, you’re glowing. What’s the secret to looking so good at the age of 46? ‘I think your state of mind is important. I’m a happy person and thankful for everything that I have created in my life, from work to family. It’s nice to accept things as they are and not continually wish for more.’ How many magazine covers have you been on? ‘In total, I think I have been on over 350 front covers. My most memorable ones would have to be Vogue, The Sunday Style and The Sunday Times Magazine.’ You’ve always been in such good shape. What exercises do you swear by? ‘In my life, it’s so hard to get to the gym so I compensate by walking the boys to school.

Plus, I’m always running up and down the three flights of stairs at home, instead of taking the lift.’ Do you ever work out with your husband? ‘We love to do hikes together. Every weekend we take long walks with our children in the park, or along Portobello Road.’ How important is it to you that your kids are into fitness? ‘They’re naturally sporty so I don’t need to convince them to enjoy it. At the moment, they love karate, skateboarding and football. When you have boys, you have to keep them active as they always have a lot of energy!’

Do you think being healthy and fit helped you cope better with your recovery? ‘Being in good health helps with everything in life, but for me it was a positive attitude that got me through.’ Are you working on any future projects at the moment? ‘I’ve been getting back into acting - I have a short film coming out in July called In2ruders on Amazon Prime. I play a ruthless CEO who will do anything to get what she wants. On the business front, I have just signed a global licensing deal with Sadaqat, the world’s leading home and bedding suppliers. We will also be developing By Caprice Home’s core product line. It’s going to be such an exciting year ahead!’

We all know it’s important to exercise regularly, but do you ever just pig out on chocolate? ‘Heck yes! I have binge days just like anyone else. But chocolate isn’t a favourite – it’s all about pizza with double cheese and jalapeños!’

You had a horrible scare last year with a brain tumour diagnosis. How did you deal with it? ‘The first thing that comes to mind is: how do I deal with this in a way that is best for my children? I chose not to tell them as I didn’t want to worry anyone. The surgery was risky but I had to do it, and I knew I’d be okay.’

How do you juggle all of this while being a mum? ‘There really is no perfect formula. You have a lack of sleep and no time for yourself, but I love every single second of being a mum and running a successful business.’ CS
