It’s not often (actually, EVER) I find myself hoovering a celebrity’s stairs – but that’s exactly what I did at our Christmas photoshoot with Michelle Heaton and her family. The pop star and actress talks exclusively to Celebrity Secrets about turkey, tinsel – and why she puts her tree up in late November Interview by Claire Muffett-Reece

THE SECOND THE Celebrity Secrets crew walk in through Michelle Heaton’s front door we’re warmly welcomed by the singer, who’s boiled the kettle and laid out tea, coffee and plates of biscuits for us to dig in to. Her home in a leafy suburb just outside the M25 is remarkably quiet for a family shoot – until we realise husband Hugh has taken the kids out for an hour so we can set up undisturbed. “Move around whatever you need,” she smiles, watching remarkably calmly as we tip over her brand new sofas to make space for a Christmas tree and all our equipment. Popping upstairs to do her own hair and make-up – “I do it alright myself so what’s the point paying for someone?” – we’re left to have a wander around her lovely home. You’d never guess you were in the house of a celebrity, with family drawings on the fridge by daughter Faith, five, and toy cars on the floor from son AJ, three – until you come across her Brit and Disney Celebrity Mum of the Year awards… So Christmas has come quite early in the Michelle Heaton house… “It’s crazy celebrating in November, I know! I’m so busy with panto this year and I only get Christmas Day off, so we thought it would be nice to celebrate twice – once now and once on the day itself. Today’s going to be so much fun for the kids, and it’s nice to know they’ll get to do it all over again next month.”

Are you looking forward to being back in your part of their own Christmas routine. Tell us a bit more about your panto role… “I’m playing the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Newcastle’s Tyne Theatre & Opera House, from the 8th December right up until New Year’s Eve. It’s an amazing cast this year with Matt Pagan as the Prince – and we’ve even got a real-life Disney Princess too!” What’s it like playing a ‘baddie’? “Last year was my first year as an evil Queen, and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel as a character the kids are supposed to hate. It took me a while to get used to the boos, but now I realise the more they do it the better you are – so they’re really cheering you on in a sense!”

Will your real Christmas Day be very different? “It’ll be hectic! I have two shows on Christmas Eve then I’ll drive straight home, probably getting back around midnight so I can help put out the presents for the morning. The kids will wake early and we’ll snuggle up in bed drinking tea and eating crumpets, opening one present each before heading down to see what Santa’s left. I can’t even drink on Christmas Day, as I have to leave either late that night or first thing Boxing Day to be back for my next show.”

Does that mean you have to be even more organised than normal when it comes to shopping and wrapping? “I’m actually quite behind this year – normally by mid-October I’ve got most of the present buying sorted! I shop online for tons of stuff as it’s much easier than heading out, then I’ll wrap it in stages and hide it in the loft. I also grab deals when I spy them in the supermarket so I’m not left panicking at the last minute.”

What about Hugh? “He’s an absolute nightmare to buy presents for! His birthday is also right near to Christmas and he hardly ever gives me a clue of things he’d like. He actually asked for an Apple Watch last year – and then he went and sold it two weeks later as he decided that he didn’t like it! I’m much easier – I just have a wish list of stuff I’d really like. The problem is, I always end up buying it for myself if no one else does!” So what are you hoping that Father Christmas has left under the tree for you? “The only thing that’s on my wish list at the moment is a new pair of Louis Vuitton heels. My current pair have been worn to death and are on their way out, so I think it's about time someone bought me some new ones. Fingers crossed!”

Tell us about your tree – when do you put it up and what’s it like? “We used to put it up 12 days before Christmas, but then the kids came along and everything changed. Now it’s usually the end of November or right at the beginning of December, so I get to enjoy it with Faith and AJ before panto season begins. It also has to be artificial, as it’d die without me at home watering it, plus the kids would be forever covered in pine needles! I usually have red and gold decorations, but we’ve just redecorated the lounge so I need a whole new colour scheme.” What other Christmas traditions do you have? We always do Elf on the Shelf – the kids call ours Fifi. We also make sure we put milk, a mince pie, a carrot and a cookie out for Father

Christmas on Christmas Eve, and the kids get a tiny present from him like a keyring in their rooms, which is a sign he’s been and that it’s safe to leave their rooms. There’s nothing worse than them creeping out and we’re in the middle of arranging the gifts under the tree…” What about visiting Father Christmas? “We go to Lapland UK every single year and I cannot Michelle, Hugh and the kids visit Lapland UK every year

It’s the best day out, with an ice rink, elves, huskies and real reindeer. You get to make cookies with Mother Christmas – and Santa’s the real deal!” Have you ever celebrated Christmas abroad? “Not yet. In an ideal world I’d still have Christmas Day at home and then fly somewhere lovely and hot on Boxing Day. We went to the Turks and Caicos last year which was incredible, so I’d love to spend it somewhere like that lying on the beach.” Moving on to Christmas food – what are your favourite treats to eat and drink? “Everything – I tend to eat until I'm fit to burst! I’m a massive foodie as it is and absolutely love my food. Christmas is no exception, and I have a habit of really indulging in everything I love over the holidays. The fact I’m doing panto is a massive help for me though, as I’m active which means I don’t tend to put on weight – even though I’m eating loads!”

Who does all the cooking? “Me – I’m a bit of a control freak in the kitchen. Hugh’s great when he’s told what to do, but I prefer to do it all myself. If I wasn’t in panto I’d be busy peeling spuds and smothering everything in goose fat, but because I’m only home for Christmas Day it’s going to have to be pre-prepared supermarket potatoes, parsnips and veggies.” What about the turkey? “My mum’s coming down with me on Christmas Eve so she’s cooking it beforehand and bringing it in the car. It’ll be a great day and I always make sure the kids at least try their sprouts – I drench them in butter and AJ licks his clean!” So what’s a regular Christmas Day like when you’re not doing panto? “I drink Champagne all day long! We’ll eat Christmas dinner, then have a couple of cheeky Bailey’s before heading over to Hugh’s auntie’s for a bit as she lives nearby. Apart from that celebritysecretsmag.com

Do you go to the gym over Christmas to make up for all the extra calories? “I’ve arranged to go to a gym near my mum’s while I’m up in Newcastle just to keep on top of things. To be honest though it’s best not to worry. Everyone puts weight on at Christmas and it’s mainly water retention – so never get on the scales after indulging over the holiday. We all have trouble fitting in our jeans and have a bloated tummy and puffy face – it’ll come off in January when you’re back in your normal routine.”

For all the joy it brings, Christmas can be stressful, and the pressure to rustle up amazing meals whilst wrapping, shopping and whatever else, can prove overwhelming. The ideal remedy is to have some simple yet tasty recipes on stand-by, and a handy helper in the kitchen to help you shortcut your way through the chaos. No, not an elf – although wouldn’t that be great? – but Primula Cheese, which adds melty cheese in just a quick squeeze with no slicing or grating required.

Keep a tube of Primula on-hand and you’re just a squeeze away from delicious melty cheese meals for the festive period. Stir it into pasta or risotto, melt over a steak or smother Primula Cheese with Chives over roast potatoes with a sprinkle of grilled streaky bacon for a crowd-pleasing addition to the Boxing Day buffet. It’s also ideal to help you to create impressive side dishes for Christmas meals, being the perfect addition to a cauliflower cheese or this root vegetable dauphinoise. Say bonjour to the simplest cheese sauce you’ll ever make!

Easy Dauphinoise

Serves 4, ready in about an hour. 300ml semi-skimmed milk 2 x 150g tubes Primula Original Cheese 2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 1 small swede, peeled and cut into small chunks 1 small celeriac, peeled and cut into small chunks 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped Cooking spray/oil Salt to taste Pepper to taste

1. Preheat oven to 190°C/fan 170°C/gas 5. Put the milk and Primula Cheese in a large bowl and mix well to make a sauce (it’s best to remove the Primula from the fridge 15 minutes in advance). Add the vegetables, reserving half the sweet potato slices and add the garlic. Season well to taste. 2. Spoon the cheesy mixture into a medium ovenproof dish. Overlap the reserved sweet potato on top and spray with the cooking spray or drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 45-50 minutes, until golden, and serve immediately.

LAUREN POPE We caught up with TOWIE’s Lauren Pope for some essential tips on how to survive the party season. And yes, it does involve hair clip-ins and cauliflower… Words: Emily Berryman

FACETIMING LAUREN POPE has proved two things to us, TOWIE fans. For one, the girl manages to look effortlessly gorgeous – even ridiculously early on a dark Monday morning – plus this Devonshire diva turned Essex girl is refreshingly down to earth, too. Which can only be a good thing when we caught up over the phone for a chat on all things Christmas... CS We’ve come over all festive in the CS office and can’t wait to get cracking on that eggnog. How will you spend Christmas? L “I usually visit my family or end up abroad. I was born and raised in Devon and love going down to hang with my nieces and nephews over the holiday. Christmas is all about the kids, isn’t it?” CS So do the TOWIE cast have an annual Christmas party? We can just imagine all those swanky secret Santas – not to mention the boozy bust-ups… L “Yup, we always film a Christmas special and make sure we have a knees-up at the same time. Being on TOWIE means we’re quite good at turning most events into a big party. At the moment it seems like everyone’s getting on – but let’s see how long that lasts!”

CS With all those Christmas parties comes temptation. How do you still rock a crop top when there’s Quality Street to snaffle? L “Christmas is my one guilt-free time of year – it’s definitely not a time to count any calories! I train a few times during the holiday season so I don’t feel too bad about all the chocolate and sweets, but it’s important not to get consumed by healthy eating and to just fit it into your life as much as possible.” CS Do you like to glam up or dress down over Christmas? L “There's a tradition that my mum buys me the best pyjamas around Christmas so I always have something comfy to chill in. They’re from M&S and are so snuggly; I tend to stay in them until it’s absolutely necessary to get dressed. I'm sure that's the case for most people, though – at Christmas I’m around people I love, so they don’t care if I look like a scruff! It's nice to be able to chill out without worrying about looking glam.” CS Do you have any beauty tips for during the party season? L “Make sure you always experiment when it comes to your hair! I'm lucky enough to own a hair extensions brand, so I can have a different hair look for every day of the party season! I tend to go more glam at this time of year but I'll also try more hair up styles, using my clip in ponytail or bun options.”

CS As a DJ, business woman and TV star, this time of year is manic. How do you get through the festivities without looking frazzled? L “I shovel on the concealer like everyone else! I also make sure I take a lot of vitamins, as my skin has a tendency to break out quite easily with a lack of sleep and a poor diet. I'm never without a daily dose of multi vitamins, as well as fish oil, zinc, DIM and magnesium.” CS What are you hoping to find in your stocking this year? L “I’d love a new NutriBullet – my current one’s on its last legs as I use it for most meals. I have a smoothie for breakfast, chucking in oats, fruit, water, matcha powder and Super Elixir powder. For dinner I sometimes blend cauliflower and broccoli with coconut oil and it comes out like a yummy mash. I know it sounds awful but it actually tastes good!” CS Will you be making a New Year’s resolution? L “No – they breed disappointment! If you want to change something do it there and then, rather than wait until New Year’s Day.” CS And finally, with a whopping 1.24 million Twitter followers, will you be channelling the Queen and sending out a Christmas message? L “The main message I have is to appreciate your loved ones, putting your phone down as much as possible. It’s the one time of year you can enjoy being together – no stress, no drama, just good old-fashioned fun!” CS
