erry Katona’s all smiles the minute she arrives at our studio in Shoreditch. Grabbing a croissant and cup of tea before sitting down for hair and make-up, she instantly lifts everyone’s Monday morning mood by chatting about the Harry Potter studio tour she went on the night before. ‘I didn’t get to bed in the end until one o’clock this morning, then I was up again at five sorting everyone’s school uniform out,’ she reveals. Being a single mum to five kids sounds exhausting, but ever since Kerry’s third marriage ended

back in 2017, it seems she’s been taking it all in her stride. Shooting to fame 20 years ago as a member of girl band Atomic Kitten, Kerry’s life has had its fair share of ups and downs. At one stage she appeared to have it all, with money in the bank, supercars on the drive and an abundance of TV deals. However, her troubles with cocaine saw her work swiftly dry up, with bailiffs and bankruptcy not too far behind. The problem is, Kerry’s still trying to shake the negative connotations that have hounded her for so many years. Yes, she

was wed to Westlife’s Brian McFadden at a young age, and yes, she’s had two other marriages. Sure, she’s got five kids by three different dads, and she’ll admit to anyone that her drinking and drug taking was once out of control. The fact of the matter is she’s been clean for an impressive 10 years, instead focusing on her health and wellbeing by losing weight, getting in shape and making her kids a priority. Is she fed up of still being known as the Kerry who slurred her way through This Morning back in 2008? We sat down with the star to find out… celebritysecrets.com

Kerry, you look incredible! How much weight have you lost? ‘I’ve managed to lose two stone from working with a company called Skinny Revolution. It’s dead easy – you have an injection every morning to help curb your appetite, and then you team it with healthy eating and exercise.’ Why is this the regime Celebrity Secrets readers should follow? ‘Once you see the weight coming off from the injections, it makes you much more motivated to stick to the plan. You want to exercise more and to watch what you eat – I call it a “kick up the arse” to push you in the direction you want to head towards! You’ve also got to remember that every person is unique and that some people don’t lose weight as easily as others, so the injection gives you that boost to get you started.’

‘I don’t like the word “diet”, as I prefer to think of it as a healthy lifestyle’

How healthy are you with your diet these days? ‘I don’t like the word “diet”, as I instead think of it as a healthy lifestyle. I prefer to eat little and often, which is a world away from my old bad habits. As a mother, one of my biggest food let-downs came from being on the go constantly, when I used to make the kids a meal then eat all their leftovers rather than thinking about what was the better choice for me. Nowadays I enjoy a protein shake in the morning, and I make sure I eat plenty of fish and fresh fruit and veg. I’m not an angel, though – my downside is Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. I could happily eat that all day long!’ Are you happy with your shape? ‘I don’t think any woman’s ever completely happy, as we all look in the mirror and think, “I don’t like this about me.” I’ve actually put some weight back on and am now a size eight to 10. I think I went a bit too thin – my face looked gaunt – and I wanted to be healthy rather than skinny.’ What’s your relationship like with alcohol now? ‘Five years ago, I was so unhappy that I drank three bottles of Prosecco a day. I was in a really controlling relationship and wasn’t allowed to do anything, so I’d drink to feel numb. Nowadays two glasses tends to be my limit! I’m not a big drinker anymore, even though everyone saw me downing a glass of bubbly on Celebs Go Dating.’ You’ve also been clean for 10 years… ‘It took me a long time to realise that I don’t need to have a drink or take cocaine. I’m crazy enough as it is! I’d hate to have a hangover now, and I certainly don’t want to sleep the day away when I’ve got a family to look after. I love the fact I’ve been clean for a decade, and every day I wake up happy that I’m no longer ruled by bad relationships and bad lifestyle choices.’

Do you still stand by your argument that male celebrities get away with more because of their gender? ‘This is when I spoke about how quickly people have forgiven Ant McPartlin after his drunk-driving conviction. I love Ant and Dec and think they’re amazing, but the fact of the matter is women are judged much more by their actions than men. Ten years ago, I was on This Morning, slurring my words because of my medication for my bipolar disorder, and the first thing Fern Britton asked was whether I was an alcoholic!

Everyone presumed I was drunk on national television, and it’s taken me a decade to get back into a career that I love. Ant, on the other hand, crashed his car because of being over the limit, and eight months later he’s back presenting Britain’s Got Talent. Why? It’s because he’s a man – and I’m a mother. I’m not entitled to have a breakdown or go off the rails, whereas in actual fact I think us mothers have got more of a reason than anybody for it all to get on top of us.’ celebritysecrets.com

Do you think Katie Price is also suffering from negative press because she’s a mother? ‘Totally. She’s been all over the papers, rapping about coke, and you can clearly see she’s gone off the rails, and everyone’s now jumping on the bandwagon and kicking her while she’s down. Why are people not asking what the underlying problem is instead of saying she needs her kids taking off her? It’s because she’s a woman and a mother. It’s just like when a man goes out shagging 200 women and gets a pat on the back for it – no woman would ever receive praise for doing the same. It’s total double standards.’ Let’s move on to what calms you. You regularly post about the benefits of yoga on your social media… ‘I try to do it every morning for anything from five minutes up to three quarters of an hour, depending on how much time I have. I love it and would definitely be a personal trainer if I had the time to qualify.’ How do you make sure the whole family follows your healthy lifestyle at home? ‘I swear my kids think I run a restaurant, with all the requests I get for different meals! However, five kids means we all have to eat the same – it would cost a fortune and I’d be run ragged otherwise! I’m lucky really, as my kids are good at eating healthily. They love fresh seafood like prawns, mussels and lobster, and they are all very adventurous with food. Max must also be the only kid I know who doesn’t like chips! Don’t get me wrong, we order a Domino’s or grab a McDonald’s from time to time, but they equally love healthy stir fries, chicken fajitas and salmon with Mediterranean veg.’ celebritysecrets.com

How hard is it really raising a family of five as a single mum? ‘Being a mum is the hardest job in the world, but it’s also the most rewarding job in the world. I just wish I could get everyone to clean up after themselves! I don’t have a cleaner and we live in a three-storey, six-bedroom house, and I constantly have piles of washing to sort and bedding to change. It’s never ending!’

‘Unconditional love is all you need’

Are you ever lonely? ‘God, yes! I love my kids dearly, but I’ve got a very small unit of people who I actually allow into my life. I tend to get lonely when I’m not working. I was incredibly busy with panto at Christmas, and then I had five days off, when I just didn’t move off the couch. Getting back into a routine and some normality was a bit of a struggle.’ What are you like as a parent? ‘I’m very laid-back, but when I lose it the kids know by the expression on my face! I also think growing up in care has influenced my parenting skills. I took Molly and Lilly to a refuge when they were young to show them how different people’s lives can be. I also went to a refuge for victims for domestic violence last year. I took Molly, and at the end of it she turned around and said how proud she was of me. That meant more to me than anything. Unconditional love is all you need.’ Speaking of love, let’s go back to Celebs Go Dating. What was filming the show like? ‘Everybody got on so well, and there was no drama whatsoever. I loved spending time with every single member of the cast and crew.’ And what do you say about the fact you called all of your ex-husbands pr*cks on film? ‘That’s a fact! There’s nothing negative about me saying that – it’s why they’re all my exes!’ You and Brian are obviously in a good place now, though… ‘We are. People need to get over me and Brian – it was a million years ago, and I’ve been married twice since then! I think at the time it was such a high-profile public marriage – and a public breakdown. Danielle, Brian’s girlfriend, is absolutely lovely, so it’s nice that we can actually get to where we are and be grown up about it. I’m 40 next year; I’m a big girl you know.’ What would it take for a man to turn your head? ‘I don’t know, I think my walls are so high. He’d have to be extraordinary, have drive, ambition, be supportive and want to let me grow. For me, it’s about meeting somebody and having that connection and chemistry.’

How did you manage to maintain your weight while you were there? ‘I actually lost 5kg in the first week, which I think was down to nerves! Having a tan makes you feel slimmer, too. The show promotes healthy eating, so I was eating well, but I think the heat itself stopped any weight gain.’

Do you always watch what you eat? ‘I try to pick the healthy option and stick to high fat and low carb. Congratulations on the pregnancy! You look amazing – what’s your secret? ‘I’m still working out five times a week! I do three weight training days for 45 minutes and two cardio days, which vary from a walk with my dogs to 20 minutes on the StairMaster or 15 minutes HIIT. I make sure I have two rest days, too.’ Have you gained any weight? ‘So far I’ve put on 11lbs, and my bra size has gone up by two cup sizes – needless to say, Gorks is chuffed! My cellulite has increased, and I’ve also counted a few extra stretch marks on my bum. However, despite all of the above, I actually love my body more than ever.’

Are you OK with the changes? ‘Pregnancy is a privilege that’s sadly denied to many – and I know how lucky I am. I’d be lying if I said the changes in my body weren’t scary, so I did have a moan to Gorks early on about gaining weight, especially coming from a place of always being in control of how I look.’ How will you lose the baby weight? ‘I’ll focus on training, using the program from my book, but only when I’m truly ready. I’m under no pressure to hit a certain size by a certain date. With a new baby, it’s not going to be my priority.’ Are you following a pregnancy diet? ‘I eat everything in moderation. My diet’s ‘healthy’ most days, with plenty of veg, rice and lean protein. If I fancy a pizza or chippy tea, though, I’ll definitely have one.’

Any cravings? ‘Bread and pasta are my weakness. Tiger bread, lightly toasted with a drizzle of olive oil and some sea salt and pepper, is so good for a snack.’ You’re glowing right now. Do you have any beauty tips? ‘I drink a lot of water – around three litres a day. ‘I start my day with an hour of training – usually my FI7ness workout – then I’ll have a protein shake, fresh juice and cup of coffee. If I’ve been out the night before and am a little hungover, my breakfast choices aren’t always as healthy! ‘A light salad is my go-to lunch of choice. I usually have tuna or chicken with lots of cucumber, lettuce and sweet potato. I’m partial to dark chocolate, and when I was in TOWIE I’d eat it all the time, but now I just have the odd square to satisfy any sweet cravings.’

Martin proposed to me just before the meal began, so I was euphoric the whole time.’ What food do you treat yourself with? ‘I love a spicy chicken curry! I never follow a specific diet, but I don’t eat anything processed, instead opting for organic and clean choices.’ Tell us about your new TV show, Celebs On The Ranch… ‘Ten of us went to a cowboy ranch in Arizona to become the perfect cowboy or cowgirl. rankie Bridge has packed a lot into her 30 years: two pop bands, two children, a Strictly Come Dancing runner-up prize and a fairytale wedding to retired footballer Wayne Bridge. Frankie, who is mum to sons Parker, five, and Carter, three, is now also an advocate for mental health. We caught up with the star to find more…

Do you find that doing regular exercises helps with your depression? ‘One hundred per cent. Wayne and I go out for really long walks with the boys. We sound so old and boring – I’m going to be wearing hiking boots soon! I’m not saying we’ll be going on any walking holidays anytime soon. I don’t think we’re quite there yet.’

How were your recent 30th birthday celebrations? ‘Amazing. I’d been dreading turning 30 for a long time and was in denial about it. I had to have a word with myself and be like, “Franks – you haven’t done too badly. You’ve got two kids, you’ve got a husband and you’ve been in two pop groups, so you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself.” I thought, “yes I’m doing alright – I can chill out”.’ Speaking of your music, do you think The Saturdays will ever decide to tour again? ‘I’d like to think we will one day. Because we’ve never split, and we’ve never fallen out, the opportunity is always there – and that’s how we always wanted it to be. So who knows!’ What about reality TV? Would you like to do any more reality shows, or would you consider a joint one with Wayne? ‘Wayne would love me to do I’m A Celebrity, mainly because he’d get to go to Australia for two weeks – and that’s his own words! I think it’s also because he loved it so much, so he’d really love for me to do it. It’s something I’d like to do to test myself, but it’s a long time to go for, and I’m not sure how I would feel about being away from the boys

for that amount of time. As for us two on reality TV together, I just think we’re too boring to be honest – I don’t think anyone would even commission it! In all the reality shows on TV now, they all seem to be living these fun and exciting lives. If you want to come and watch us on a family walk, I would do one just for you!’ Have your kids shown any talent for football or performing? ‘Not at the moment – right now they’re not particularly strong in either area. However, Wayne and I were quite late starters in what we did and we also both worked from young ages. I do think that Parker has great hand-eye coordination, so I suppose that’s one thing on the sporty side. Carter loves music and always asks to dance, but they could completely switch.
