Interview: Claire Muffett-Reece FREDDIE - GEORGE WINS everyone over the moment we meet him on location at the Celebrity Secrets photoshoot. Just six months old, he’s got to be one of the happiest babies we’ve ever seen, beaming and gurgling away over the constant attention. ‘He’s such a good baby,’ beams Nathan, scooping him up for a bottle mid-interview. ‘He only ever moans if he’s hungry, and he’s already pretty much sleeping through the night.’ Considering this time two years ago Cara and Nathan had only just met, coupling up and going on to win the 2016 series of Love Island, the pair seem remarkably confident and content as parents. Nathan’s totally hands-on with their son while Cara goes to hair and make-up, and, when the baby seems tired, Cara puts Freddie’s needs first, asking if it’s OK to move the order of the photos around so he can have a quick nap. The pair are so in sync it’s hard to imagine this time last year Cara was facing the prospect of raising her unborn child as a single mum, with the couple announcing their split shortly before she revealed she was pregnant. Just what was it exactly that brought them back together – and what does the future hold in terms of marriage and more babies? Our exclusive chat reveals all…

Cara and Nathan – it’s been two years since you won Love Island. Did you picture yourself having a baby when you first got together? C ‘Never!’ N ‘It’s a bit of a shock to the system – but definitely a good one.’ C ‘We’ve just started re-watching the show on Netflix – but now Fred’s in between us, which is really strange.’ Take us back to the day you met. What were your first impressions of one another? C ‘I really wanted to meet a normal guy, rather than someone who spent all their time down the gym and with all their veins popping out their chest. Then I heard Nathan and thought he sounded like a bit of a laugh.’ N ‘Cara was the fittest girl in there and we clicked straight away. Caroline [Flack] had to tell us to shut up at one point because we were talking so much!’ When did you realise there was a spark between you? C ‘It all progressed so naturally that I actually don’t know! I do remember I made him wait ages for a kiss, though…’ N ‘We kept ending each other’s sentences while we were in there, so I knew we were right for one another.’ celebritysecrets.com

Why did you win? N ‘I honestly think it was because we were real and just up for a bit of a laugh.’ C ‘We didn’t take ourselves seriously, whereas some of the others might have been in it for the money and sponsorship deals.’ Tell us how your life together progressed when you came off the show… N ‘It was hard because all of a sudden it was just the two of us 24/7.’ C ‘I struggled with depression when we left, because all of a sudden we were thrust in to the spotlight and everyone knew who we were. I found it really overwhelming at times.’ Nathan, you announced your split on Instagram in April 2017 saying, ‘the worst feeling in the world is when you know you both love each other, but still you can’t be together.’ Why was love not enough? N ‘We just grew apart because we were spending 24 hours a day together.’ C ‘Nathan also got caught up with all the social side that comes with suddenly being deemed a celebrity.’ N ‘Cara’s more homely, whereas I wanted to enjoy myself, so I went out a bit too much.’ C ‘We kept rowing and one day we realised how sad and angry it was making us, so we decided to walk away.’ Cara, is it true you discovered you were pregnant shortly before you split? C ‘Yes. I’d gone to an appointment with my mum to have some cancerous cells in my cervix lasered, and they did a routine pregnancy test beforehand. All of a sudden the woman came back in the room saying, “congratulations!” – and my mum and I looked at each other in disbelief!’ celebritysecrets.com

Some people will want to know why you both still decided to split knowing a baby was on the way… C ‘Being in an unhappy relationship is an environment no one should ever be in – and certainly not if you’re carrying a baby. We knew we could get on as friends better than partners, so that’s what we decided to do.’ Let’s talk being pregnant. Was it all smooth sailing for you? C ‘I had quite an easy pregnancy and absolutely loved how it changed my body.’ N ‘You looked proper fit!’ C ‘I didn’t even get any stretch marks! I used to smother myself in Bio Oil and went through at least a bottle a week.’ What about cravings? C ‘I didn’t have any! I did feel nauseous at times, though. If I ate a pear it made me feel ill, and I even got car sick from being pregnant, which had never happened to me before.’

I take my hat off to all the single parents out there, as without Nathan there are times when I don’t know how I’d even manage a quick bath!’

Tell us how you both came to realise you couldn’t be apart… C ‘It was all down to sex! I’m quite a horny person and throughout my pregnancy really craved sex, but there was no way I could be intimate with anyone else when I had Nathan’s child growing inside me. We met up and I said, ‘Nath, can you do me a favour and just please let me use you for half an hour?’ Surprisingly, he was a bit apprehensive at first!’ N ‘I thought it would confuse things, but she was quite persistent and managed to twist my arm… not that it took much persuading!’ C ‘I can’t believe we got back together after having regular nookie – but that’s the truth!’ Let’s move on to the birth… C ‘It was a nightmare! I went 13 days over my due date before Fred arrived. Before the hospital intervened I tried every single wives’ tale for bringing on labour. I ate super-hot curries, Nath and I had a ton of sex, and I must have drunk a gallon of raspberry leaf tea. In the end I had five sweeps at the hospital before they eventually decided to induce me.’

Nathan, you filmed Cara on gas and air and put it on social media for the world to see… C ‘I’m so happy he did it. Honestly!’ N ‘We’re quite a crazy couple and really down to earth, so why not? Plus it’s a moment to cherish forever now we’ve got it on film.’ C ‘I also love how it shows me looking a right state with no make-up on. I think mums-to-be need to understand that you really do look a mess when you’re in labour – and that it’s perfectly normal.’

Is that all the pain relief you had? C ‘I also had pethidine, which made me feel a bit drunk. I was getting to the stage where I was considering an epidural when the midwife announced I was 8cm dilated – and that there was nothing else she could give me!’

Nathan, how were you at this stage? N ‘Cara’s mum was also there and freaked out a bit at one stage, so I took over and was pulling Cara’s legs up and cheering her on.’ C ‘He was saying, ‘go on girl, go on!’ I remember doing one last push and all of a sudden there Fred was – all seven pounds 14 ounces of him!’ N ‘And I was the one who got to cut the cord!’ How did it feel holding your newborn son? C ‘This is going to sound awful, but I just remember thinking how wonderful it was that the pain had stopped – then the midwife announced she was going to sew me up!’ N ‘While they sorted Cara out I cuddled Fred and shed a few happy tears with her mum.’ C ‘We then spent the day in hospital and were allowed home that evening.’ celebritysecrets.com

10 | CELEBRITY INTERVIEW ★ 12 What was it like that first night? C ‘The first few days Fred was up all night and me and Nath were like zombies! Luckily he soon settled in to a routine. We went to see Nathan’s friends the other day and they couldn’t believe how good he was.’ Were you able to breastfeed? C ‘I tried for ages. Fred had tongue tie when he was born so he couldn’t latch on, so I pumped and put it in a bottle. One night, after about four weeks, I turned to Nathan and said I couldn’t do it anymore – it was exhausting. We moved on to formula but I was absolutely gutted, because I really wanted to breastfeed.’ Tell us how you chose Freddie’s name… N ‘All I said to Cara was that I wanted a good old-fashioned English gentleman’s name.’ C ‘I’d actually already decided on his name before we even got back together! Nathan wasn’t sure about the double-barrell part at first, though.’

N ‘To be fair no one really calls him that anyway. I just love the name Fred as it’s traditional and doesn’t follow a trend.’ Cara, we love how comfortable you were with your body when pregnant, even posing naked in your last trimester. How do you feel about your shape right now? C ‘Some days I’m fine with how I look, but then others I feel a bit rubbish, if I’m being completely honest.’ N ‘I think she looks better now.’ C ‘I’m actually considering having a boob job, as they’ve gotten saggy since having Fred. It’s hard, especially when everyone expects you to just ping back to your pre-pregnancy size straight after having a baby.’

Will we see a daughter to add to your dream team prior to any potential surgery? C ‘I want all boys, as girls are too much hard work when they’re older. The last thing I need is Nathan turning up all angry on their boyfriends’ doors!’ N ‘I’d like a boy and a girl, as then that would be the best of both worlds.’ C ‘I want as many as my body will give me! Nathan says we’ve got to wait until we’ve moved in to our new home and we’ve got our businesses sorted – and then I’m just going to pop out babies constantly!’

What do you think is the best thing about being a parent? C ‘I love everything about it, especially how happy Fred is to see us every morning, or when he wakes up from his nap.’ N ‘There’s times Fred gets up ridiculously early and you’ve not had anywhere near enough sleep, but then he smiles and all the tiredness goes away and you can’t wait to be with him.’ Nathan, what’s Cara like as a mum? N ‘She’s amazing. I’m rubbish at multi-tasking, so Cara does all the cooking and looks after the house, all the while doing an incredible job of bringing up Fred.’ C ‘We have a rule that I do the night feeds if Fred ever wakes and Nath will do the early mornings, so I can have an extra hour in bed.’ Does that mean Nathan’s a hands-on dad? C ‘He’s unreal. When I was pregnant I had a few doubts about the sort of father he’d be, but he’s unbelievable.’ N ‘I think we make a great team. I’ll do the bottles while Cara dresses him, or I’ll do the bath while she cooks dinner or gets Fred’s stuff ready for the next day.’

Is there anything you miss about your days pre-baby? C ‘More sleep! I used to love my lie-ins but that doesn’t really happen anymore.’ N ‘I don’t miss a thing. What’s a typical family day when you’re not working? N ‘We like to go to the seaside. We’ll take the dog and spend the day soaking up the sun and enjoying a bit of seafood.’ C ‘Even if we have to work Fred always comes along. He loves all the attention!’ Has he been enjoying all the holidays you’ve had as a family? C ‘He’s even perfect on the plane! I have to give him a little bit of Calpol as we board because he suffers with his ears, and I always give him a bottle as we take off to make sure they pop, too.’ N ‘Fred sleeps on the plane, and all the other parents look at me while their kids are screaming thinking I’m a right jammy git!’

You’ve said you’re buying a home – does that mean an engagement’s on the cards? N ‘We’re buying a new four bedroom house, so it’s the perfect size for when we have another baby. As for an engagement – wait and see!’ You’ve also been seen on the latest series of TOWIE. What’s that like? C ‘Fun! We get to go along, see our friends and catch up on gossip – all while being filmed!’ N ‘And without the drama some of the cast have to deal with.’ Is there anything else you’ve got coming up? N ‘Fred’s Swimwear, a father and son line I’ve created. When I started I never knew I would take to it like I did, but it happened very naturally. Breastfeeding is the most natural thing a mother can do – so why should you hide away and worry about feeding your child in public? Everyone breastfeeds for different lengths of time, and there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to how long you feed for. Fifi has a night-time feed before bed if she asks for it, and I’m fine with that. I don’t know when I’ll stop, but it will probably be when she says she wants to. I’ve got an amazing connection with my child from feeding – I wouldn’t change that for the world and it’s what works best for me. But I’m all about each and every mother doing exactly what they feel they need to do as an individual, there’s absolutely no right way or wrong way.’

The TV star on her struggle with postnatal depression (PND) ‘Postnatal depression makes you feel detached, lifeless and muted. I didn’t want to see anyone and I wasn’t enjoying being a new mum, which made me feel guilty. ‘We’ve all heard of the ‘baby Luisa Zissman suffered with PND blues’ but PND is different. When I was still crying and feeling low three months after giving birth, I knew it wasn’t normal. What helped was to throw myself into work and make space for me. Being organised and getting sleep was also key to helping me get through it. My advice is don’t feel guilty and don’t bow to social pressure. Make sure you get into a routine – and keep doing what made you happy before.’

The doctor and wife of Peter offers advice on the condition ‘Postnatal depression is very common and affects more than one in 10 new mums. It can be tricky to recognise because the ‘baby blues’ are common for THE EXPERT new mums, however, this is not expected to last more than two weeks after giving birth, so any symptoms of low mood, anxiety or tearfulness after this time could be a sign of PND. ‘Other symptoms include low energy levels, lack of enjoyment and problems bonding with your baby. Any new mum who thinks she might be suffering from PND must seek help early. Don’t be afraid to talk about it. Suffering from it doesn’t make you a bad mum and it’s certainly not your fault.’

A life-threatening disorder of pregnancy, Hollyoaks’ Rachel shares her experience ‘I found out I had pre-eclampsia the day I gave birth. I had speculated for a while, as my hands and feet were so swollen, but it was misread as carpal tunnel. Luckily, I chose to go in for a check-up at 39 weeks, to be told my blood pressure was through the roof and I had protein in my urine. The doctors kept me calm, but after my daughter was born I was told that if I hadn’t gone back into hospital I could have experienced seizures, as the more my blood pressure was increasing, my baby’s heart rate was decreasing. That was very scary to hear.’

What are family mealtimes like in the Piper household? ‘Dinner is the only meal my family eats together in the week, so I always make sure I prepare something we’ll all enjoy. I’m very aware of not making food an issue in my house, so that’s why I don’t restrict what she eats.’ Do you worry your girls eat too much sugar? ‘We’re all conscious of this, and my advice is to try home baking. I do a lot with Belle and we often use natural sugars in place of the usual ingredients. Katie, why did you choose to design a maternity range? ‘Finding maternity fashion that’s affordable and suits your style is hard, so I wanted to provide mums-to-be with practical pieces which made them feel confident.’ Looking back what did you love most about being pregnant? ‘I loved wearing clothes that complemented my bump, but when you feel huge you need to be comfortable, too! I’ve always struggled to find things I liked that also didn’t break the bank, so helping other mums-to-be with my own range was essential.’

Why were you price-conscious when it came to the range? ‘During pregnancy your body changes so much, which tests your self-confidence. Having affordable options available helps – you’re only wearing maternity clothing for a few months, but you still want to feel great.’ Where did your design inspiration come from? ‘I worked with the founder of Want That Trend, Victoria, to get her insight, which I always find invaluable, but I also wanted to ensure it reflected my own style. I love feminine florals and pops of

colour, as well as playful designs such as Bardot styles and wrap dresses, which I found so handy when I was pregnant – and they’re great while breastfeeding, too.’ What in your eyes is the best thing about the range? ‘I love the fact that it covers all occasions, with casual pieces suited for day-to-day styling, moving on to glamorous jumpsuits and dresses for evening looks. What’s also good is that the functional design of the maternity range isn’t compromised – the pieces are equally as stylish as they are practical.’

Do you have any styling tips for any new mums out there? ‘Comfort is key! Your body has just gone through a big change bringing a baby in to the world, so give yourself a break and wear what feels right for you.’ Let’s talk baby fashion. What are your favourite brands? ‘I’ve got loads, but I do tend to sway towards Next, My 1st Years, GAP Kids and Cath Kidston. I’ve bought so many pieces for the girls from these brands, as they are adorable and the quality is always fab!’ What do you think about genderneutral baby clothes? ‘It’s of course down to the preference of the parent, but when babies are very small they tend to wear neutral-coloured baby grows anyway. As much as I love dressing my girls in pink and girly pieces, my main priority is for them always to be comfortable in their clothes.’ What are the baby clothing staples you’re never without? ‘Definitely plenty of sleepsuits and vests, and generally clothes that can be layered and are easy to take on and off for changes!’ Any advice for parents who worry if they’re doing enough? ‘Being a parent is hard work – but what’s most important is a happy and healthy mum and baby. How often do you read with your kids? ‘Adam [Crofts, Tina’s fiancé] and I make sure we read to Scarlett and Beau every night. We usually take it in turns, so when one of us is busy the kids don’t miss out. Scarlett also reads by herself and loves David Walliams’ books and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.’ What books does Beau enjoy? ‘He loves The Snail and the Whale, Stanley’s Stick and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. I also love reading Once There Were Giants to them – it’s a beautiful story and makes me quite emotional about the process of my kids growing up.’ Let’s talk playtime – what do your kids enjoy doing the most? ‘Scarlett loves making up all-singing and all-dancing shows, that we then get to watch from beginning to end. Beau loves SpiderMan and Lego, using his imagination to talk to the characters like they’re real. We went to Disneyland Paris a couple of weeks ago and saw Spider-Man in the flesh – and Beau said it was better than Christmas!’

But why is it important for parents to sit down with their kids and read? ‘Reading is one of the most important activities a parent can do with their child,’ says This Morning’s psychologist Emma Kenny. ‘Promoting and stimulating their imagination, it enables a child to harness the power of their thoughts. It even increases vocabulary and creates more emotionally literate children, all in an organic, effortless way.’

What do you love about seeing your kids play? ‘It’s knowing they are learning new skills, becoming more independent and, most importantly, that they are content and happy. When I’m teaching at The Drama Mob we always encourage drama through play, and it’s amazing to see how incredible and free a child’s imagination is. They come up with ideas far better than us adults, as we tend to be more guarded and reserved.’ Moving on to technology. What are your thoughts on letting kids have tablets and other consoles? ‘Scarlett and Beau have an iPad each, which is great when you’re on a long car journey – however, it’s also a hindrance, such as when we’re at home. We tend not to let Beau use his in the house, as he can get a bit addicted, whereas Scarlett’s happy to play with hers in small amounts. We do sometimes give Beau one of our phones or his iPad when we go out for meals on holiday, though. I always thought I wouldn’t be that parent – but sometimes it’s nice to have a bit of peace!’ What do you think about apps for education? ‘Scarlett has one that helps with her times tables, and I would’ve loved some of the apps she gets to play on and learn from when I was her age. I make sure to monitor what she’s using it for, and she’s never allowed to take her iPad in to her room. At the end of the day it’s all about balance.
