SAFETY FIRST ESSENTIAL SAFETY ADVICE YOU NEED TO READ BEFORE USING A HANDHELD HUSQVARNA POWER CUTTER
DO YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY? WE DO. A handheld power cutter is a very versatile machine that can be used for a wide variety of cutting jobs. It is also an extremely powerful device equipped with a massive, rotating cutting blade that needs to be handled carefully – and only by someone with the proper knowledge. Because we at Husqvarna care about your health and safety, we put together this brochure to highlight the essential safety advice that you should know before using a Husqvarna handheld power cutter. More advice can be found in the operator’s manual. READ THIS FIRST
3 ESSENTIAL STEPS TO HELP YOU STAY SAFE: 1. Make sure you have the skills required. Nothing beats practical experience. In many countries, the National Work Environment Authorities require you to attend a certified training course before you operate a handheld power cutter. Check the requirements in your country before starting work.
2. Read the operator’s manual thoroughly. Pay attention to the warning and caution paragraphs. If you don’t have the time or patience to invest in your own health and safety, then don’t do the job. There’s no excuse for skipping this essential step. If your printed manual is missing, Husqvarna manuals are available to download on www.husqvarnacp.co.uk
3. Refresh what you’ve learned. Even experienced users need to keep their knowledge up to date. The aim of this brochure is to help you brush up on important skills and complement the knowledge you learned previously. It should only be used as a complement to steps 1 and 2 – not a substitute!

START WITH THE CUTTING BLADE Failure to check the blade’s condition before cutting is a common mistake. Using the wrong type of cutting blade, or a worn-out or damaged one, increases the risk of accidents. Choosing the right blade for the job at hand will help you work smooth and efficiently.
KNOW THE BLADES DIAMOND BLADES
ABRASIVE BLADES
DESIGN: Husqvarna diamond blades consist of a steel core equipped with segments that contain industrial diamonds.
DESIGN: The cutting material on abrasive blades consists of grit bonded with organic binder. This is often reinforced with a fabric or fibre base, which prevents total breakage at maximum working speed if the blade gets cracked or damaged.
APPLICATIONS: Ideal for cutting masonry, reinforced concrete and other composite materials. CAUTION: Never transport the power cutter with the blade fitted. Before use, inspect the blade for cracks in the core and segments, imbalance or missing segments. Check the wear indictors on all segments to ensure enough side clearance. Scrap the blade if you detect any damage.
APPLICATIONS: Recommended for dry cutting of materials that do not create silica dust, such as steel, steel alloys, cast and ductile iron. CAUTION: Cannot withstand moisture or freezing temperatures. Before use, ensure that the cutting blade is not cracked or damaged: test the blade by hanging it on your finger and tapping it lightly with a screwdriver or something similar. If the blade does not produce a resonant, ringing sound it is damaged.
Never use other blades with a Husqvarna Power cutter. Never use toothed blades like wood cutting blades, circular toothed blades, carbide tipped blades, etc. The risk of kickback is significantly increased and tips can be torn off and thrown at high speed.
KNOW THE SYMBOLS BUSHING DIAMETER Check that the bushing on the machine’s spindle shaft corresponds with the centre hole of the cutting blade. The blades are marked with the diameter of the centre hole.
THE RIGHT BLADE FOR THE RIGHT MACHINE Make sure the cutting blade is the right one for the machine you will be using for the job.
WET OR DRY CUTTING? Wet cutting diamond blades must be used with water to keep the blade core and segments cool during sawing. Using wet cutting blades without water can cause excessive heat build-up, resulting in poor performance and severe blade damage. It is a safety hazard.
SMARTER FEATURES Husqvarna diamond blades are equipped with several indicators to give an instant, clear view of the blade’s wear, side clearance, direction of rotation, cutting depth and intended application.
SPEED RATING Check that the blade is approved for the same or higher speed as specified on the power cutter’s approval plate. Never use a cutting blade with a lower speed rating than that of the power cutter. 3
THEN, KNOW THE KICKBACK – AND HOW TO AVOID IT Kickback is one of the most common causes of serious accidents with power cutters. Simply put, kickback occurs when the rotating blade is pinched or stalled in the cut. When that happens, the blade’s kinetic energy causes the machine to be thrown out of the cut with full force. In certain cutting postures, this throws the machine – and the rotating blade – towards the operator.
5 STEPS TO PREVENT A KICKBACK
NEVER USE A DIAMOND BLADE WITH WORN-OUT SEGMENTS To ensure the right amount of side clearance, the thickness of the segment (T1) must exceed the thickness of the blade’s steel core (T2). Otherwise, the core might get pinched in the cut. Husqvarna Smarter Blades are fitted with wear indicators to help you judge whether the blade is OK to use or not.
KEEP THE BLADE STRAIGHT IN THE CUT If you twist or angle the machine sideways in the cut, the blade might get pinched and cause a kickback. Be especially careful when you put a rotating blade into an existing cut.
4
MAKE SURE YOUR WORK PIECE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED The work piece must always be supported so that the cut stays open when you cut through. If the cut closes and pinches the blade, there is a risk of kickback. Be especially alert when cutting a pipe with a belled end, a pipe that could be in tension, or a pipe in a trench that, if not properly supported, may sag and pinch the blade.
NEVER CUT IN THE KICKBACK ZONE The upper quadrant of the blade is known as the kickback zone. If the kickback zone is used for cutting, the reactive force drives the blade to climb up in the cut. Always use the lower quadrant of the blade to avoid climbing kickback.
STAND PARALLEL TO THE CUTTING BLADE Avoid standing directly behind and facing the rotating blade while cutting. This means that in the event of a severe kickback, the saw will move in the plane of the cutting blade and pass beside you.

FINALLY, HAVE YOU CHOSEN THE BEST SETUP FOR YOUR JOB? THE RIGHT SIZE AND POWER SOURCE It’s always safer to choose the right size of power cutter with the right power source for the job. The battery-powered Husqvarna K 535i is ideal for smaller cutting jobs, indoors as well as outdoors. For bigger cutting jobs indoors, the powerful electric Husqvarna K 4000 is a superb choice. For more demanding outdoor cutting jobs, we recommend a petrol power cutter like the very useful Husqvarna K 770.
BATTERY
ELECTRIC
A battery power cutter like Husqvarna K 535i weighs less than a petrol power cutter and is easier to start and handle. It also runs more quietly and since you don’t have to fill any petrol or deal with exhaust fumes, you can use it indoors too. Max cutting depth: 76 mm.
The electric K 6500 /K 7000 power cutter delivers a cutting depth of 155 mm without petrol and exhaust fumes. Powerful and versatile both indoors and outdoors.
PETROL
EXTRA CUTTING DEPTH
A petrol power cutter like Husqvarna K 770 SmartGuard is a versatile tool for cutting anything from rebar, beams and pipes to masonry, curbstone and concrete slabs up to 125 mm thick. Husqvarna K 770 Vac is specially designed to capture the dust at the source when dry cutting.
When you need extra cutting depth (up to 450 mm), Husqvarna K 970 Ring or K 970 Chain are efficient alternatives. The chain and ring produce less gyro and rotational forces than a diamond blade, which also means that any potential kickback will be less violent.

THE RIGHT DUST SUPPRESSION Never cut concrete, brick, masonry or asphalt without some kind of dust suppression. If possible, always bind the cutting dust with water – either from a hose or a portable water tank. If dry cutting is your only option use a power cutter designed for this task like Husqvarna K 770 Vac, or attach a vac unit to your Husqvarna K 535i or K 4000. All of these should be connected to a powerful HEPA dust extractor such as Husqvarna S 13 or S 26.
DRY CUTTING DUST SUPPRESSION When wet cutting is not an option, use a Husqvarna K 535i or K 4000 equipped with the vac attachment, or a K 770 Vac, and connect it to a Husqvarna S 13 or S 26 HEPA dust extractor.
WET CUTTING DUST SUPPRESSION
To bind the dust with water, connect the Husqvarna power cutter’s wet cutting kit to a garden hose or a portable water tank, such as Husqvarna WT 15 or Husqvarna pressurised water tank.
THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES FOR SAFER, LESS STRENUOUS WORK PIPE CUTTING CLAMP Husqvarna pipe cutting clamp is a smart accessory, enabling safer and more precise work. The clamp holds the power cutter steady, preventing kickbacks, while allowing you to benefit from the full cutting depth of Husqvarna Chain power cutters.
CUTTING TROLLEY Making long cuts at ground level with a handheld power cutter is strenuous on your back and knees. To work in an upright position, we recommend that you use a Husqvarna KV 7 or KV 9/12 cutting trolley.
WALL CUTTING SUPPORT Husqvarna WA 20 is an accessory that turns your power cutter into a small wall saw, helping you to make straight cuts in a safer and less strenuous way.
