Thank you for purchasing a HUSTLER HURRICANE LX104 series STRAWSPREADER. Please read through this manual as it contains important information which you need to know.
Please take special note of the safety warnings, routine servicing, and troubleshooting.
Correctly maintained and operated this machine will give many years of service. Should you have any questions please contact the dealer who supplied you this machine. They have trained technicians who will be able to help you.
In this document the product named on the front cover is referred as a ‘machine’.
A vehicle is used for transporting and providing power to operate the machine. This could be, but not limited to, one of the following: Tractor, Telehandler, Skid Loader, Pivot Loader, Pick up.
In this document ‘Drive Unit’ is referring to the power source to operate the machine.
Please note details of the machine referred to in this Original Instruction Manual are subject to change by the manufacture without notification. Continuous improvements and additions are carried out with products. For up-to-date information regarding your machine (if different to what is provided in this manual), please contact Hustler Equipment International.
IMPORTANT
• Please ensure this booklet is read and understood by every operator of this machine.

WARRANTY (LX104 Hurricane Strawspreader & Bedder)
The goods specified in the Instruction Manual as designed and supplied by the Manufacturer are warranted against faulty workmanship and defective materials for a period of 24 months from the date of purchase.
Such warranty is subject to the following conditions:
1. This warranty covers the repair or replacement of parts or machinery sold by the manufacturer and damaged as a result of the faulty workmanship or materials in such parts or machinery. It does not extend to any other loss or damage including consequential loss or damage or loss to other property or persons.
2. Without limiting the senerality of paragraph 1 above, this warranty does not cover the following:
a. Travel expenses.
b. Damage caused by accident, misuse or abuse.
c. Damage to any goods which have been altered or modified by someone other than the manufacturer or its authorised agent
d. Damage or loss to the goods due to their unsuitability for any particular use or for using with any particular tractor except where such use or tractor had been specifically approved by the manufacturer.
e. Damage or loss where the fitting and installation of the goods were not carried out By the manufacturer or its authorised dealer.
f. Paint damage or wear.
g. Wear and tear where Hustler deem the product to be in a high wear environment
3. Procedure for recovery under warranty. No loss or damage will be covered by this warranty unless the following procedure is followed by the purchaser
a. The loss or damage should be reported immediately to the dealer (who will contact the manufacturer who will advise whether it is covered by the warranty and undertake the necessary action).
“This warranty shall be interpreted according to the laws of New Zealand and the parties agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the Courts of New Zealand.”
WARNINGS
• Take EXTREME CARE when connecting the machine to the threepoint linkage of a tractor or carrier frame of a telehandler. Ensure the tractor/telehandler handbrake is applied before leaving the cab. Be sure to refer to the vehicles’ manual for correct fitment.
• If the machine is stationary mounted or on a pickup/truck/ute deck, ensure it is SECURELY FASTENED.
• ENSURE the latch hook is correctly latched when transporting the machine, whether it is connected to a tractor/telehandler or being transported on a trailer.
• ALL persons must be well clear of the machine when in operation. Only the operator should be within three metres of the machine whilst feeding. Persons should be 20 metres from the machine when bedding. Foreign matter in bale may cause INJURY or DEATH.
• Disconnect the hydraulic hoses from the drive unit BEFORE trying to clear feed material or cut strings / net anywhere from around or on the machine.
• Oil supply must be shut off BEFORE the operator leaves the vehicle controls.
• ENSURE the electric controller is securely fastened in the vehicle. If the controller falls it may operate the machine without warning causing INJURY or DEATH.
• Watch CAREFULLY when driving for over-width and tail-swing when travelling through gateways or near objects or people.
• BEFORE attempting maintenance or any work on the machine, ensure the drive unit is shut off and no one is near the hydraulic controls. The hydraulic hoses and electric connection must also be disconnected from the drive unit. Before attempting work on the hydraulic system, the hydraulic pressure must be fully released from the system. This is carried out by floating the hydraulic remote in the vehicle with the hoses attached whilst activating all the functions of the joystick ensuring it is connected to a power supply. The platform must be completely lowered.
• Take EXTREME CARE when lifting the machine on a front loader, telehandler or skid steer loader as this changes the balance point of the vehicle and may cause it to tip over.
WARNINGS CONT.
• ALWAYS lift the platform to recommended initial rounds/square feeding position when travelling regardless of with or without a bale. Failing to do so can result in the mainframe separating from the three-point linkage frame.
• KEEP CLEAR of moving feed platform and pivot mechanism. DO NOT use the machine for transporting anything other than a bale.
• REGULARLY check the machine for signs of wear, stress or damage. ENSURE any parts are repaired/replaced if needed.
• DO NOT allow any person(s) to ride on the machine at ANY time.
• Missing or damaged covers can cause the machine to function incorrectly and expose moving parts which may result in INJURY or DEATH. All protective covers MUST be correctly fitted before machine operation.
• NO alteration or modification is to be done to this machine unless undertaken or authorised by Hustler. Failing to do so will void warranty and potentially make the machine unsafe to operate.
• Vehicle MUST be operated at low speed over even ground when the machine is attached. The machine must be kept as low as practical to the ground when traveling on a loader or telehandler.
• Take EXTREME CAUTION when driving the vehicle on unlevel ground with the machine attached. Do not exceed 15 degrees’ side slope when attached to the 3-point linkage of a tractor. Refer to the vehicles’ manual for permitted travel on uneven ground.
• KEEP CLEAR of feed rotors. These have sharp points which are needed for teasing the bale.
• KEEP CLEAR of bale tines when the linkage frame is not engaged with the mainframe.
• ENSURE the platform lift arm is completely lowered before engaging the linkage frame with the feed unit.
• The machine requires 60 – 70 Litres of oil per minute to spread straw and 20 - 40 litres to feed bales. DO NOT EXCEED 80 LPM. This will cause the hydraulic system to overheat.
• When the machine is in operation the hydraulic components (hoses, block, valves and motor) can heat up. DO NOT TOUCH Components can reach over 60˚C / 140˚F which will burn if touched.
• Use ONLY straw or short chop hay when spreading. Balage may cause the bedding rotor to jam. In the event the drum stalls, stop the oil flow to the machine IMMEDIATELY.
• DO NOT attempt to manually lift the latch hook without the platform completely lowered. As the platform may drop causing SERIOUS INJURY.
• ENSURE appropriate protective equipment is worn whilst operating this machine. Hearing protection must be worn when using the spreader. Some bales give off a lot of dust when they’re spread. A dust mask must be worn when spreading straw/hay. A cab-less vehicle is not recommended, however if used, the operator must wear safety glasses to be protected from projected foreign objects in the bale when spreading.
• Not all bales unravel evenly. In the possible event that material gets attached to the machine and causes vibration, STOP OPERATION IMMEDIATELY. Follow the correct procedure to remove any material from the machine. ENSURE the hydraulic and electric supply are disconnected from the machine BEFORE attempting to clear any material.

MAINTENANCE
(also do this before initial operation)
• Grease all points regularly.
• These are:
o 6x main drum bearings (remove covers, do not over-grease).
o 6x platform bearings (do not over-grease).
o Grease point on linkage frame pivot.
o Ram spear pivot.
o Moving parts on the latching mechanism. (these need to slide freely for the latch to work).
o All points of contact between the linkage frame and main frame. i.e., hooks, latches, platform lift pin.
• Keep the 2 drive chains oiled. Use non-tacky black or brown chain lube monthly.
• Regularly check the drive belt for wear. Replace if needed.
• After the first 10 hours of operation check all bolts and grub screws are tight.
• During routine servicing check that the grub screws and bolts are tight.
• In a salty atmosphere keep grease on parts that are likely to rust. i.e., pins and cylinder shaft.
• Regularly check the machine for signs of wear, stress or damage. Ensure any parts are repaired/replaced if needed.
• If the short chain is replaced or removed, ensure feed drums are timed correctly as shown.
Note:
Top drum tooth should be flush with the centre of the bottom drum star radius. This is very critical, one tooth out on the sprocket will cause the feed to jam in the wiper panel.
MACHINE STORAGE
When the machine is not in use ensure the platform is completely lowered and the bedder unit is in the ‘Bedding’ position (lowered). This ensures the hydraulic cylinder spears are protected from corrosion. Do not store the machine with a bale or part of still on the machine. If the machine has not been used for a period of 4 months or more, ensure correct maintenance is carried out before operation. See the Maintenance section of this manual.
LIFTING POINTS
Lifting the machine must only take place with the Platform and Bedder unit in the lowered positions. (Ensure the latch hook is connected correctly)
For safe lifting of the machine with a fork-lifting vehicle ensure the forks are placed directly under the bale tynes (blue arrows). Lift from the front or rear of the machine only.
To sling lift the machine ensure four correctly certified lifting strops are used. Connect to the four recommended points (red arrows). Strop 1. must be 300mm shorter than the others. Strop 4. must be secured outside the latch hook mount to ensure it does not slide. Once all four strops are connected lift the machine slowly to ensure it is balanced and 1. 2.

OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
CONNECTING SPREADER ONTO TRACTOR/TELEHANDLER etc.
• When connecting the Hurricane LX104 spreader to a vehicle take extreme care to ensure of immediate personal safety and for the duration that the machine is connected to the vehicle. Read and understand the vehicles operation manual to ensure of correct fitment and secure latching.
• When connected to a tractor ensure the vehicle and the Hurricane LX104 are sitting on level ground then adjust the top link so the pin is in the centre of the slot.
• Connect the hydraulic hoses and electric controller to the vehicle. Ensure the controller is mounted securely in the vehicles cab.
• Before starting the hydraulic oil flow ensure the Spreader Control is switched to the ‘Spreader Stop’ position.
• The speed of the feed drums, bedder rotor and platform can be adjusted individually, please see the ‘Adjustments’ section of this manual.
• Some bales are just plain difficult for any machine, however the Hurricane LX104 will generally spread or feed these out. They will take a little patience and may need the rotors to be reversed 1-2 turns then forward again.
• The hydraulic flow should actuate the platform at a smooth, controlled rate, not too jerky or sudden.
• Familiarise yourself with the hydraulic controls on the machine.
CONNECTING/DISCONNECTING THE LINKAGE FRAME FROM THE FEED UNIT
With the patented snaplox auto connect/disconnect hands-free loading system, you don’t have the frustration with tugging on a rope to disconnect.
• Factory setting as shown below. This is great for round bales and most square bales. (Please note these pictures are shown without the plastic platform for better understanding for the reader, it is not necessary to remove the plastic when altering the platform position).
Disconnecting
• To disconnect, ensure the vehicle is stationary.
• Lower the feed platform fully down.
• Lower the complete machine onto the ground (feet farthest from the vehicle should touch the ground first).
• Watch the latch hook lift, then drive away leaving the mainframe on the ground (if the hooks don’t release see the ‘Troubleshooting’ section for help).
Connecting
• When reconnecting the linkage frame to the feed unit ensure the platform lift arm is completely lowered. (Highlighted blue for illustration.)
• Then simply align the bale tines on the linkage frame with the guide cones on the feed unit.
• Once the tines have started to engage, adjust the linkage height so the linkage frame remains level.
• Insert the tines until you hear the hook click and see it latch.
• Lift the machine off the ground and raise the platform to the initial feeding position. It is very important to lift the platform when traveling with or without a bale, as the machine may un-hook when the platform is lowered.
• Go feeding or spreading.
Loading bales
Ensure the ‘Square Bale Frame’ is fitted before loading a square bale into the machine.
Wrapped Bales
• For loading wrapped bales - first remove the plastic wrap only. DO NOT remove string or net-wrap at this stage.
• With the platform fully down, using Hustler SOFTHANDS or bale spikes lift the bale so it just above the platform.
• Remove the net from the bale.
• With the net removed finish lowering the bale onto the platform.
• Connect the machine following the ‘Connecting’ section above.
• It is very important to lift the platform when traveling with or without a bale, as the machine may un-hook when the platform is lowered.
Hay/Straw Bales
• Using Hustler SOFTHANDS or bale spikes lift the bale over the platform.
• For hay/straw bales with strings, lower the bale right down onto the platform then remove the strings.
• Knots may be hard to pull out - using a small stick as a grip makes it easier. If they are net wrapped, the bale will need unwrapping before lowering right onto the platform.
• Ensure all string, wrap and net is removed before operating the machine. This may come jammed in the machine causing damage.
• Connect the machine following the ‘Connecting’ section above.
• It is very important to lift the platform when traveling with or without a bale, as the machine may un-hook when the platform is lowered.
Transporting
• Lift the platform up to the recommended initial feeding position to cradle the bale securely against the rotors while travelling.
• Ensure the platform is lifted to the Round/Squares bale position even when travelling without a bale. (Machine may un-hook when platform is down.)
Feeding Out
Ensure the bedder unit is lifted fully up
Round Bales:
• Keep the platform at the recommended ‘ROUNDS’ position - then operate the feed drums to start feeding out.
• As the bale feeds out and the diameter reduces, raise the platform to keep the bale against the feed drums.
• Getting the bale turning is the secret to successful feeding out.
• The higher the platform, the better the chance of turning - even the most odd shaped bales.
• Connect the machine following the ‘Connecting’ section above.
• It is very important to lift the platform when traveling with or without a bale, as the machine may un-hook when the platform is lowered.
Square Bales
• Lift platform to recommended position.
• It is recommended an ‘Even Feed Roller’ and ‘Square Bale Frame’ are fitted for square bales. (see Adjustments section of this manual for fitment)
• When ready to feed, operate the activate the feed drums to start feeding either one ‘biscuit’ at a time or intermittently.
• Most silage bales will tease out nicely. However, some hay or straw bales won’t, especially if they were wet when baled. If several ‘biscuits’ are coming off together, lower the platform slightly and/ or reverse the rotors 1 turn then forward 4 turns, reverse, forward, continue.
• Near the end of the bale, lift the platform to help the last few biscuits feed out.
• Connect the machine following the ‘Connecting’ section above.
• It is very important to lift the platform when traveling with or without a bale, as the machine may un-hook when the platform is lowered.
Spreading
Ensure the bedder unit is securely latched down in position.
Round Bales
• Ensure the platform at the recommended ‘ROUNDS’ position.
• Switch the Spreader control to ‘Spreader Start’ which will start the bedder rotor.
• Operate the feed drums to start feeding straw into the bedder unit.
• As the bale feeds out and the diameter reduces, raise the platform to keep the bale against the feed drums.
• Getting the bale turning is the secret to successful feeding out.
• The higher the platform, the better the chance of turning - even the most odd shaped bales.
• Connect the machine following the ‘Connecting’ section above.
• It is very important to lift the platform when traveling with or without a bale, as the machine may un-hook when the platform is lowered.

ADJUSTMENTS
Easy Clean Wiper
• Recommended to be cleaned before use, daily or any time of buildup.
• Turn off tractor/telehandler.
• Release both silver end latches of the wiper, let wiper panel slide open.
• Remove excess material.
• Close wiper by pulling bottom of wiper with one hand and pushing the top of wiper panel with other hand. (Keep fingers clear of pinch points).
• Press both latches down into lock position.
Adjusting wiper panel
• Wiper Panel must be set up as close to the top drum as possible. (this reduces any build-up in the wiper with sticky bales)
• Remove front and rear plastic covers.
• Loosen M16 bolts at both ends.
• Slide wiper towards the top drum, to reduce the gap to a minimum. (keep fingers away from pinch points)
• Retighten M16 bolts at both ends, (recommended torque 140Nm).
• Latch must be down (locked) when resetting wiper position.

Closing (clockwise) the Bedder Rotor Speed lever the Bedder Rotor will not rotate. Ensure this lever is closed before attempting to clear or remove material from the machine. The hydraulic hoses and electric connection must also be disconnected from the drive unit for attempting to clear material from the machine. Cover will have to be removed to allow adjustment.

Ensure the bedder unit is latched in either the lifted or lowered position at times of operation or transport.

Platform Chain Tension
Over time the platform chain will require adjustment.
• Simply loosen off all eight bolts holding the bearings in place.
• Loosen off the adjuster backing nut.
• Wind the adjuster nut to tension the chain. Both sides must be adjusted to suit each chain.
• With the platform fully down, the chain should not hang more than 10mm below the platform side plates.
• Tighten the adjuster backing nut, then the eight bearing bolts.

Fitting the Square Bale Frame
When feeding or spreading square bales it is recommended fitting the Square Bale Frame (SBF) to support the bale, resulting in a more even and consistent outcome.
• Ensure the feed platform is cleared of straw/hay
• Sit the SBF onto the platform, opposite the bedder unit
• Push the SBF toward the feed rotors (red arrow direction)
• Ensure the latches seat correctly (blue arrow)
• Insert pin through bale retainer & square frame front plate and secure with lynch pin (grey arrow)
ADJUSTING SQUARE BALE FRAME
The Square Bale Frame can be adjusted to fit bales up to 2400mm long. With the frame fitted to the Hurricane, simply move the adjustment lever down (red arrow) and pull/push the square bale frame using the handle (blue arrow). The adjustment lever must fit into a locking position before proceeding to operate the machine.
Bale Retainer Bar
When using the Hurricane for round bales, it is recommended you put the bale bar into the upright position to help retain the bale when loading the machine.
To do this:
• Remove the triknobs at each end of the bar
• Pivot the bar
• Reinstall the triknobs and tighten by hand.
Fitting Even Feed Roller
The Even Feed Roller (EFR) is recommended to be used when processing square bales, especially tight bales.
• Ensure a bolt and washer are securely fitted to both ends of the EFR
• Insert the EFR into location slots in the Hurricane mainframe (red arrow)
• Latch both ends of the roller into place (blue arrow)
TROUBLE SHOOTING
General Issues
ISSUE
Bales coming over the drums
POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION
• Platform too high
• Slow down the rotors or lower the platform once the bale has started feeding.
Feed ‘jams’ in the wiper
• Super sticky bale
• Wiper not adjusted correctly
• Feed rotors not timed correctly
• Reverse the rotors (no more than 3 revolutions) and then forward again.
• Lift the platform, so the bale only touch-es the top drum, not the bottom drum.
• See WIPER PANEL ADJUSTMENT section to set up wiper position.
• See MAINTENANCE section to time the feed rotors.
Latch mechanism not working
• Excessive buildup of mud or feed material on the mechanical latch
• Wear or damage to the latch
• Fine chopped bale
• Clean the latch area, grease all the moving/sliding parts.
• Check the latch for wear or damage. Contact your Hustler dealer to purchase replacement parts.
Bale starts falling apart after removing the plastic or the net wrap, even when I try removing it carefully.
• Remove the covering Just before lowering the bale onto the platform.
• For very difficult bales, lower bale onto platform and remove the covering around the bale where you can, and collect the rest afterwards.
ISSUE
Bale rotates but hay will not feed.
POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION
• Bale on backwards
• Simply unload the bale and pick it up from the other direction and re-load.
The rotors turn OK but the bale won’t revolve.
• Platform too low
• Rotors going too fast
• The platform is not high enough.
• The higher the platform the more weight of the bale is on the rotors. It may be too late if it has taken a ‘gouge’ out of the bale. Remove the bale and try again. NOTE: Fine chopped bales may fall apart.
• The speed of the rotors is too fast, chewing off some hay before the bale has time to turn. Slow down the top rotor to 1 revolution every 2-3 seconds.

Square Bale Issues
ISSUE
Several biscuits coming off at once.
• Dirty Platform
• If this occurs the platform should be cleaned and silicon sprayed on, as the residue can stop the bale rotating properly.
POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION
• The platform is too high
• The biscuits congealed too tightly together when baled
• Lower platform.
• •Reverse the top rotors 1 turn then forward again (repeat this continually).
• • If the bales are too tightly compressed you may not be able to tease them out separately.
Bales are too long for the platform.
• Bale longer than 2 metres
• Purchase the optional extension kit for the platform. Order Code: 7107012
Biscuits not feeding very well
• Bale very tight
• Platform needs adjusting
• See ADJUSTMENTS section to lift platform.

MAINTENANCE LOG
This record is to stay with the instruction manual and be used as proof of upkeep should a claim be lodged. Hustler requires you to keep track of approx 12 monthly maintenance by having your service provider routinely fill out the log, or by keeping receipts of work done. Routine checks will save ongoing repair costs. Pre-season is the best time for this. Excluded items are wear parts and electric components.
