EXPERT TIPS FOR YOUR SP SPRAYER FLOW METER DECONTAMINATION Proper cleaning and decontamination is essential to avoid crop damage and performance issues with a sprayer. Ensure you flush dead zones like the fence line circuits, second flow meters and boom ends.

Regular Routine Flow Meter Inspection & Mesh screen inspection/cleaning can greatly assist in trouble free operations.

NOZZLE FLOW RATE TYRE WEAR

Compare nozzle flow rate with a new nozzle, replace if more than 10% from new spec.

To prevent tyre wear and help Autosteer accuracy, periodically turn steering full lock left to right at least five times to rephrase steering cylinders.

SPRAY PRESSURE CAB AIR FILTER Regularly check cab air filter restriction level indicator and replace carbon filters yearly.

To maintain correct rate and spray pressure check the pressure is returning to zero when pressure is relieved from boom. Carry out a nozzle catch test to ensure flow meter accuracy.

CLEAN AROUND SUSPENSION EXACTAPPLY™ MACHINES Perform a boom rinse procedure daily to help prevent nozzle plugging and solenoid malfunctions. Nozzle bodies must be rinsed daily when a chemical has been used. Do not allow spray cleaners/tank cleaners to sit in the system for longer than label recommendations or one day at most.

Developed by American company Blue River Technology, See & Spray Select uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to detect, identify and make management decisions about every single plant on-farm. And as H&P Sales Operations Manager Andrew Watt says, the result will be a revolution in weed control. “With the rise of herbicide-tolerant weeds, there are now fewer and fewer effective solutions, with farmers spending billions a year worldwide to keep weeds under control. “With See & Spray Select, a camera setup with advanced machine learning will identify and spray weeds in real-time and adapt on the go. As it captures imagery it learns what plant is a weed and what plant isn’t a weed, starting off as a fallow ground solution and building in more features in the future.

“We saw the ExactApply™ nozzle technology released a couple of years ago and this was really the last piece of the puzzle from a John Deere factory perspective to get the whole solution where we’ve got individual nozzle control. “We can control the flow rate of the chemical and for turn compensation, we can apply the right pressure at the right speeds at the right rates and have that efficacy absolutely perfect. Now, to take that to the next level, the See & Spray Select technology is the game-changer to take us from, ‘Yes, we’re spraying correctly’ to ‘now we only spray the individual plants we need to spray’. “The economic benefits for the farmer are huge, but it’s also another step forward in full machine autonomy when operators will no longer be in the machine cabs.”

HOW SEE & SPRAY™ SELECT WORKS:

Andrew explained that John Deere, which acquired Blue River Technologies in 2017, has released See & Spray Select for ordering across its self-propelled sprayer range.

Reduced solution use – by avoiding inefficient traditional broadcast applications and spraying only when weeds are detected, you can reduce the applied volume of herbicide by 77%.

Greater cost efficiency – 77% spray volume reduction means significantly lower herbicide costs, fewer tendering stops, and more acres covered in a day.

Broadcast-level control – in testing, the See & Spray Select system consistently sprayed 98% of weeds present, giving you a level of control comparable to traditional broadcast application.

“There are other third-party companies that have bolt-on solutions on the market right now and they’re quite expensive, starting at about $120,000 on top of the cost of the machines. John Deere is going to be the first to market across all sprayer manufacturers to have a factory solution fully integrated. “The first limited production build machines will be in-country mid 2021. Hutcheon & Pearce will have access to one of those in August and we are planning an event to step our customers through this leading-edge technology. “We’re beyond excited to share this with our customers because it will fundamentally change the way we do things. People spend tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on chemicals and if you can save 90% of that cost, it pays for itself over and over again. “It also counters that city perception that farmers are the enemy, we’re the bad guys because we use herbicides. See & Spray Select also offers a combined spray mode, allowing the operator to set a consistent broadcast rate from nozzle A, then a See & Spray rate for nozzle B. The broadcast application controls smaller, newly emerged weeds, while the larger dose takes care of more mature weeds.

PRESSURE RECIRCULATION SYSTEM Quality of application is critical. Avoid settling in the plumbing by keeping solution in motion with pressure recirculation, coupled with product reclaim and boom air purge. These features save precious time, product, and expense when rinsing and priming the boom while switching solutions.

COST SAVINGS •

Pressure recirculation primes the boom versus traditional boom prime where liquid tends to be sprayed out, saving 113.6 L each time. If an operator does this process 10 times a day, coupled with approximately 85.2 L of solution savings with product reclaim one to two times per day, these two features together could save up to $600* a day. *NOTE: Assumes 113.6 L of residual product in the system at 93.5 L/ha) and $20 per acre 10 times per day. Please adjust the calculation to suite your operation.

PERFORMANCE •

Reduce nozzle clogging with increased agitation of product in solution system.

Keep solution in suspension in the boom and system while the machine is on and not spraying with pressure recirculation. Recirculation during rinsing removes any chemical that settled out of the suspension while spraying, resulting in higher rinse water velocity in the spray pipe. Rinse water can be recirculated multiple times to further clean spray pipes and reduce cleanout times. Boom pressure recirculation mixes the solution and primes the boom before spraying to obtain a homogenous chemical mixture throughout the solution system and up to the nozzle tip. This recirculation improves spray quality and reduces time at the start of spraying. Product reclaim transfers chemical out of the boom plumbing into solution tanks to improve boom rinse functions, also reducing exposure when servicing nozzle bodies. Additionally, save on chemical cost and enable easier rinse water collection between rinses when operators are not spraying out of the boom in the field.

COMPATIBILITY •

Pressure Recirculation and Product Reclaim are not currently compatible with Direct Injection.

Pressure Recirculation requires ExactApply and is compatible with MY18 to MY21 R4030-R4060 Sprayers with steel boom (not compatible with Carbon Fibre booms).
