EXPERT TIPS GETTING YOUR SEEDER READY FOR SOWING START WITH THE TANK SEALS: g

Tank seals are located at the top of the commodity cart. It is important to check the condition of the seals, ensuring the right tension on the tank lids is crucial in order to avoid under pressurizing the tanks. Check the bin-level sensors, making sure the paddles are free of debris and corrosion.

Check the agitation system. All the cotter pins need to be in place for the agitator to operate efficiently. Check any wiring or air lines for broken or pinched lines. Examine the seals around the meter housing & tank transitions. Look for dust paths, where air may be escaping.

Be sure to check the meter cut off handles, they need to operate freely through their full range of motion. These are commonly overlooked component and is very important should you ever need to pull the meters from the housing with a full tank of product.

Remove the meter and inspect inside of the housing. Check the foam seals and plastic isolator pieces that sit between the meter and the air manifold system. Both components are removable and are often found to have a build-up of dust around them.

Before putting the meter back in place, check it is not full of residue from last season’s operation. Seed meters need to rotate freely. If they are not, they may need to be rebuilt. Check the meter brushes and wear strips are in good condition.

Once checked the meter can be placed back into the meter housing. Ensure it locks into place. Check the gap between the sensor and the sensor wheel. Ensure the agitator arm is attached properly and set to the correct agitation speed. Meter clutches also require checking, check they lock and unlock properly.

WHEEL-SPEED SENSORS & TIRES: g

To ensure proper metering tires need to be inflated properly and wheel speed sensors need to be checked. Cart speed calibration can be done by matching the air cart’s wheel speed sensors to known speeds on the tractor display. All chains and sprockets connecting the drive wheel to the transmission shaft should be in good working order. Meter transmissions must be lubricated. Check that the cart’s wheel bearings are lubricated and properly adjusted.

Check the fan speed while the case drain line is connected. Check for hydraulic leaks and that it spools down properly after being turned off. The air stream plenum must be well sealed, and the plenum adjustment crank operates freely.

Check for signs of wear on air tubes and hoses. All wiring and electrical connections should be clean and make good contact. Examine the wiring for any broken wires. The loading conveyor belt should be properly tensioned and move easily.

EXPERT TIPS GETTING YOUR SEEDER READY FOR SOWING THE DISK DRILL g

Examine all hose, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical connections between the disk drill and the air cart. Air hoses can become brittle in the sun and wear internally as a result of product flow over time. To ensure even wear, all air hoses should be rotated one quarter turn every year. Examine the primary towers for any blockages or dirt build-up. Secondary airlines should always descend away from the distribution tower to the seed tube, if possible.

The seed tube must be securely fastened to the seed boot, which must be snug against the disc. The disc should be free to rotate and not have any side-to-side play. The seed boot can be adjusted to compensate for disc wear.

The gauge wheel should be free to rotate and in close proximity to the disc. Seed deflectors should be present but should not be worn. Closing wheels should track correctly with the disc, spin freely, and move up and down with minimal effort. Check the bushings on the opener to ensure there is no side-to-side play. They wear out faster than openers that run in uncompacted soil.

It is critical to maintain firm contact with the soil. Examine the down-pressure springs for damage and replace them if necessary. Check that the down pressure adjustment knob can freely turn. Examine all valves, hoses, and cylinders for any hydraulic leaks.

Check the entire frame to see if there are any cracks or broken bolts. Examine the tire pressure and wheel bearings. Check that all of the connections between the tractor and the drill are secure. Tie any hoses or wires around the connection points to prevent them from becoming pinched. Finally, ensure that all hazard lights are present and operational.

EXPERT TIPS BOURGALT SEEDER BEFORE STARTING EACH SEASON: g

Check all fasteners for tightness.

Lubricate all grease fittings on the machine.

Check all tire pressures refer to the decal on the hitch for pressures.

Check the distribution system for excess wear on hoses, connectors, pipes etc.

Damaged parts and those with excess wear should be reconditioned or replaced. This is especially important for parts that, in failing, may create a life endangering situation.

Wing trusses and pins, should be checked once yearly. Pins showing excessive wear or parts showing signs of stress should be replaced immediately.

END OF SEASON STORAGE: g

Wash the machine to ensure any fertilizer residue will not cause damaging corrosion.

If the unit is to remain outside store the unit in the field position so that water will not sit in the packer wheels.

Lower the openers and banders (if equipped) to the ground and float the opener and wing lift remotes to remove any pressure in the hydraulic systems. This will reduce stress on hydraulic seals and valves.

Lubricate all grease fittings on the machine to drive out any moisture.

Make sure all hydraulic and electrical connectors have caps on them to avoid corrosion.

Damaged parts and those with excess wear should be reconditioned or replaced. This is especially important for parts that, in failing, may create a life endangering situation.

The medium roller is best when planting wheat, barley, canola, and small soybeans up to 1/4 inch in diameter and with medium rates of fertilizer. The high rate roller is for high rates of fertilizer and large soybeans bigger than 1/4 inch in diameter. The very high rate roller is best used when planting barley and oats with beards, large seeds such as chickpeas, and with very high fertilizer rates.
