The MD’s message Arron Hutcheon- Managing Director

The most important message I want to communicate to you all going into harvest, is our ongoing commitment to serving and supporting your needs. This has been the single biggest foundation that my Grandfather George built the business upon over 62 years ago and one that I know is still a key element today. There will be times when we get it wrong. There will be times when we need to make changes in the business to improve and prepare for the future. I know that this may not sit well with all customers, in all markets. However, please remember every decision, or change has an underlying purpose in an effort to serve you better. We are driven towards catering to all our customer’s needs, to exceed your expectations. Irrespective of whether you are an acreage lifestyle customer or a commercial

farming enterprise. We will continue to work on this until we get it right. We are committed to making sure we re-evaluate this as your business and needs change. Remember, we aim to be big enough to service your needs; but small enough to care. There is a fitting one line statement in my local take away store that I read when I was buying my kids some fish and chips on the weekend - “If you’re not happy tell me; if you’re happy, tell others”. If you have any concerns, call me directly or contact your local Branch Manager. We are excited with the season ahead and wish all our customers luck over the next few busy months. Thanks again for your ongoing business and support. Arron Hutcheon 0428 502 454

Coleambally commitment grows...

Emma Gunter-Richards joined the Hutcheon and Pearce Coleambally team in mid-July this year as a part of our long-term plan to expand the Coleambally branch. She has moved to a property near Narrandera and is enjoying getting to know the peaceful town and friendly people. We are undertaking this expansion to improve our ability to provide great service and reliability to the local customers. This expansion is focused in the service and parts department. We aim to carry more parts on hand and have more technicians based in Coly. This in turn, is a big step towards improving the productivity of our local farmers. Emma has multiple roles in the Coly team including Branch Administrator, Service Advisor and Parts Interpreter. She is a trade qualified aircraft maintenance engineer and has a background in aerial agricultural application. She also has two years experience in the automotive parts industry which goes a long way to assist in her role as a parts interpreter. Although, she admits they are very different machines and is eager to learn more about the John Deere Ag equipment and their applications.

Narrandera Show was on Saturday 5th September. The weather provided generous rainfall for the showgrounds as we had to put the 6170R to work towing out trucks. The first rescue was a local prime mover before the gates had even opened, followed by 3 horse trucks of varying degrees of bogs; towing them through water to get them out. The show ended with the FMX motorbike display ramp truck bogged in the dark. All in all it was a good day and we came away with many customers wanting quotes on a variety of machinery and mowers. It says it all about John Deere’s horse power.

Mental Health is Everybody’s Business Peter Goodsell - Work, Health and Safety Manager

As you read this, around one in six Australian workers are experiencing mental illness. In some occupations, particularly those that involve mental stress or trauma, the rate is even higher. Depression and anxiety are the leading cause of long term sickness absence in the developed world and projected to be the biggest cause of long term disability by 2030. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate, so a CEO is just as susceptible as an admin assistant, possibly even more so. From a business perspective, this means significant costs to productivity and operations. From a human angle, it means more and more qualified people are becoming marginalised from workforces where they could potentially make a worthwhile contribution. As awareness of workplace mental health issues has increased, more and more businesses are looking for solutions. A simple online search for workplace mental health will pull up thousands of results recommending everything from motivational talks to meditation. So which one is best? A comprehensive global analysis by Black Dog Institute researchers has identified a number of evidence-based interventions that will improve mental health in your workplace. What can you do to improve your mental health at work? 1. Get Active: Research shows that physical activity not only improves your waistline, it improves your mood. 2. Be Mindful: Simple meditation techniques such as mindfulness can calm the mind and reduce stress. 3. Sleep Well: Poor sleep can tip someone from stressed to depressed. Schedule in some wind-down time before heading to bed. 4. Avoid Alcohol and Stimulants: Alcohol is a depressant and

caffeine may induce anxiety. Minimising intake of both will help boost your mood. 5. Remember Your Work/Life Balance: Sometimes it is hard to remember there is a life outside of work, but time spent with family, hobbies and other passions can induce happiness and joy and is essential to a healthy, balanced life. Seven Steps to Better Workplace Mental Health 1. Understand: Every workplace is different so it is important to understand who your audience is and how the best outcome can be achieved. 2. Involve: Increase employee engagement in the aspects of work that impact their mental health. 3. Educate: Implement workplace health promotion campaigns that encourage workers to become more aware of the signs and symptoms of poor mental health and where support can be obtained. 4. Lead: Provide leadership training at all levels to ensure managers are confident in recognising the signs of mental illness, facilitate support and accessing appropriate workplace adjustments. 5. Target: Acknowledge that some occupations have a higher risk and proactively encourage workers to improve their resilience through evidence based early intervention programs. 6. Engage: Develop and encourage multilevel peer support or mentoring schemes to develop a safe framework for staff to seek help. 7. Plan: Develop a dedicated and accessible return to work program to assist those who have had to take leave for mental health reasons.

Top Gun Apprentice Recruitment Days Matt Duffy - HR Mentor

Our two HPA TOPGUN recruitment days in Parkes and Wagga were a success. With some team co-ordination and communication between Jacqueline, Sarah and I, we managed to visit 47 schools and 3 TAFE’s to promote H&P, the HPA, our people and our continuously growing culture of growing careers not just jobs. As you could imagine after reaching out to this many students we had a fair number of applicants for our 12 apprenticeship roles. We then invited 15 candidates to a day in Parkes and 15 candidates to a day in Wagga to find “the best of the best of the best”. During our TOPGUN recruitment days the applicants went through a wide variety of interviews. They completed written tests with grammar, mechanical aptitude and problem solving. They met with MEGT who provided information on the role they play in the apprenticeship and asked the applicants some questions about how they feel about moving away from home for this training. Furthermore, our TAFE teachers quizzed the applicants on their learning abilities and mechanical skills. They were very full and active days that kept everybody on their toes. The process was a little daunting for young applicants. We are trying to be the best John Deere dealer in Australia and this means providing the best customer service possible which means we need the best TECH’s possible. So if this process is what is needed to be done to complement our already great service departments with some brilliant new first year apprentices, then that is how it is.

High Performance

Most of our new apprentices started their HSC exams Monday the 12th October, so on behalf of all H&P good luck lads. We have already welcomed Luke Ryan to the Lake Cargelligo branch and he is fitting in very well with the team. Luke previously spent 10 months with McClintocks in Forbes before coming over to the green side. This experience has proven extremely valuable to our Diagnostic Technician, Matt Hudd. From the HR team, thank you Brooke for your help and organisation. Chris Roberts, Parkes and Wagga branches for organising the tools and tool boxes. All Branch Managers, Service Managers and Foreman for your patience and interviewing skills. The MEGT and TAFE teams. Bill, Arron, Andrew and Tom for their involvement and support. To finish off, can I please ask you all as the H&P team to welcome these new lads with a little extra consideration. Many of the apprentices are moving from far and wide to our towns and communities and they will need that little extra team support.

Henty Machinery Field Days - New Equipment Andrew Sands Group New Sales Manager

Every year in September Hutcheon and Pearce exhibit at the Henty Machinery Field Days. Henty is in its 52nd year and continues to be innovative, dynamic and progressive in it’s approach to being the centre for farmers. 2015 was my 9th year working at the Henty Machinery Field Days with Hutcheon and Pearce. I can recall going to the field days as a child and remember being overwhelmed with all of the machines and exhibitors that were on display. As an adult this thought has not changed, I spoke to many people that had attended for 2 days to ensure that they had seen all that was available. Hutcheon and Pearce spend many weeks in preparation for this event and a customer asked me a question this year I had not heard before, “What do you sell that’s not at Henty”. My answer this year was the round bale cotton picker. I thought I would share some details of our site:

Site area: 2000 square metres. Number of machines on site: tractors 80. Av staff on hand: 50 per day. Value of goods & machinery on site: $7 million. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the visitors on the site for taking the time to check in and say hello. It is a great to see you all and I hope you enjoyed our selection of products and services. Thanks to all our team for the hard work in preparation and execution of the event, the promotion of “What’s in the shed” has been very successful so I would encourage you all to ask your local sales representative to explain some of the features and benefits of this program and some of the products that would be suitable for your operations. We would like to offer all newsletter readers the opportunity to collect a free gift from your sales representative by asking them about “ The Storm Promotion”. Once again thank you to all involved and we look forward to Henty 2016. Henty Machinery Field Days - Parts Vin Leary - Group Parts Manager

The three days for us at Henty was again a very pleasing result. It is very satisfying to see a plan we put so much effort into come off. Henty starts for us about one month earlier than the actual field days, and finishes about one month after. We ensure we have all the stock needed for the three days getting it all priced packed up ready to go, and the cleaning up after. There is so much work done in the back ground. Our field days would not be such a great result without the help of all staff involved. We had a number of staff attending for the first time as part of the H&P team, for us it is a great time to meet other staff members as we do not all get together that often. It is great to see all the new products on offer and swap ideas. For myself, I think the pleasing thing about the field days is getting all staff working for the end result. This is; the feedback we get from our customers. The professionalism of not only our site, but all staff involved is fantastic and we are second to none on the Henty scene. This is a standard our customers have come to expect from us and once again, I feel we excelled as we sell ourselves as a company. It is very hard to put a figure on what we get out of Henty. It is not just the sales you make over the three days, but the follow up sales that could be months later in any of our branches. Once again thanks to all staff including the ones left at the shops to keep the doors open. 140th Annual Forbes Show Preston Burns - Service Manager Parkes & Condobolin

Darren Keane and Preston Burns attended the 2015 Forbes Annual Show to introduce John Deere’s new L340 big square baler. There was much interest in the big square baler with many comments of how strong it is built compared to the competitors. To complement the baler we had a Kuhn twin rotor gyrorake on display. It was a great couple of days talking with the community and discussing the potential of these products. The L340 baler consists of a plunger with 45 strokes per minute, hydraulic driven knotter fans and an integrated automatic greasing system. Preston believes it is the R&D that John Deere have put into this machine to make it right. He was impressed with the engineering that is simple, yet unique and shouts reliability.

Duncan Demo Day Keith Kilo - Sales Representative Albury

On Wednesday 19th of August, Peter Connell and myself were invited to demonstrate the Duncan Renovator drill at a pasture workshop at Heritage Seeds, Howlong. There were 60 farmers present from all around the district and there were representatives from seed supply companies as well as agronomists to discuss the most efficient ways of improving pasture establishment. The morning was spent with forums between the seed companies and agronomists and after a nice barbeque lunch we had the opportunity to give farmers an overview of the current range of Duncan Seeding equipment from the smaller 18 row Eco drill to the 23 row MK4 Renovater. There were many interested farmers to show how easy our machine was to calibrate and the ability to sow many different types of seed through either box by engaging or disengaging segments of the metering wheel. We were able to sow some Lucerne seed in the demonstration which showed the ability of the Duncan Baker boot to create a good seed bed and place the seed accurately. We have a large number of machines retailed in the Albury district and the Duncan equipment has a very good reputation for durability and the ability to get very good pasture establishment as well as the ability to plant cereal crops as well.

H&P’s “The Biggest Achiever Jacqueline Negline-Smyth - HR Manager

In April 2015 over 40 staff at H&P took on the FitBit challenge to compete with each other in trying to relieve some stress by encouraging each other to get fitter and healthier. Weekly challenges between various groups have been a fun exercise especially when you finally get on top of the challenge list and someone logs on to and sync their FitBIt and trumps you for the top spot. I am impressed with the personal stories of many of the team loosing weight, beating their personal best in marathons, keeping up with the kids, giving up smoking in order to get fit and keeping fit for the footy season.

Two employees have won the challenge for two categories: 1. Most steps consistently over the 7 months - Brian Kerr - Wagga Parts 2. Best personal achievement - Megan Henly - Condobolin Parts Both Megan and Brian have each won a weekend for 2 in Melbourne or Sydney with 2 nights accommodation, breakfast and parking. Well done to all involved. There were several runners up including Glen Bock from Griffith. Do not stop now though - keep up the good work. I am aware of several one on one challenges continuing with kilograms in contention to be lost before Christmas. Good Luck High Performance

TECSight training days Sam Horan - TECSight Solution Specialist

The TECSight team have travelled around the Riverina carrying out customer training days at Parkes, Griffith, Hillston, Finley, Albury and Narrandera. The TESight AMS training was conducted by Matt, Dave, Sam and Andrew. While Jason, Trevor and Cassie kept all the gears moving in the background like clockwork. The purpose of the training events was to inform customers of the new technology available in their John Deere machines as well as to cover some tips and tricks when setting up the technology to capture good records. Customers learned how to navigate and setup their GS2, GS3 and Gen 4 displays, optimise their Starfire receivers, utilise the MyJD tools including JDLink, Wireless Data Transfer, Operations Centre and Remote Display Access. Details about the TECSight department and the best way to use as us a tool in their business was also highlighted. The first session began at Finley where we arrived with not one of us expecting the huge turnout of 60 customers. The Finley workshop was freezing but we still managed to appeal to our customers questions and learning. A special mention needs to go to Trent Royston for helping with the day and organising customers. Wagga Wagga also turned out to be a very cold day in the workshop. The Wagga Staff put in a big effort moving machinery, spare parts and promotional item’s to make it all look the part. Even though we had a cold day it was a good turnout of customers with 25 all in total. The customer survey’s we put out confirmed yet another story of satisfied customers with the training going off without a hitch. Once again thank you to all the Wagga Wagga staff who banded together to help make this day possible and really making the area look the part with all the gear. The third session began at Parkes with not all going according to plan. Upon arrival at the Branch on Monday afternoon Andrew Watt was reversing the promotional trailer into the workshop, when he heard a noise. Upon inspection to check he had not reversed into anything we found that the left hand rear spring had snapped inhalf. We sourced a couple of new springs and the Parkes workshop had us going in no time at all. On Tuesday we carried out the training at the Parkes Branch with a great turn out of 37 customers on a very cold and windy day. Despite the weather we still received positive feedback. We would like to thank all the Parkes staff for helping and contributing to the day and to the Parkes workshop for stopping work for half the day while we conducted the training and also getting us back on the road so quickly.

After packing up the promotional trailer, we were back on the road again for a long slow trip to Griffith. Getting into the Griffith Branch late on Tuesday night, we dropped off the trailer and decided it was time to go get some food and a beverage. A roaring turnout of 47 customer participated. Luckily we were in the conference room in the heating because the day outside did not ease up with cold winds and sleeting rain. Weather aside, there was great feedback from the Griffith customers. Big thank you to all the Griffith staff for helping with the day which went off without a hitch. Last on the agenda for this week but definitely not the least was Narrandera Ex-Servicemen’s Club. On the first day of sunshine for the week, the numbers dwindled a little bit but still a strong turnout for the area with 15 customers and 7 branch members. With yet again a strong customer appreciation for the day and good feedback from the day. We would like to thank the Narrandera branch members for all there help with organising and helping make the day such a great success. The following week saw us travel to Albury for a warmer training session and around 30 attentive customers. Big thanks to the workshop as well as Trigger and Killer for their superior BBQing skills. Last but not least, the team packed up the promo trailer once more and set off for Hillston. The Hilston customer base had not had the chance to get to Griffith or Parkes due to some poor timing of weather so we decided to take the show to them. The Services Club made for a great venue and Chinese meal with the 50 or so customers that turned out for the day. We had some excellent questions raised and a special thanks to David Kidd for taking the lead to get it organised.

Find out what’s in the shed?

Whilst all the Sales team were in Wagga attending the Sales team meeting this quarter, Andrew Sands, our Group Sales Manager, took the opportunity to launch the “Find out what’s in the shed” campaign with all from the Wagga Branch. Andrew lured in several performers for the evening staring Mirella Pinchbeck from John Deere as Tina Turner, Chris Green as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Climpson and Ashley Irvine as Topgun pilots Maverick and Goose, and Andrew himself as Phil Collins. We all enjoyed the fashion show spectacular and Ash and Tom strutted the model machinery’s stuff.

Last week I was invited by RITAFE to attend Bathurst car races and represent both RITAFE and H&P. V8’s, promo girls and beer who could say no to that? Not me! Unfortunately this was not the case, there were V8’s and there were promo girls, but the beer was off limits whilst we had RITAFE shirts on. The reason we were there was to promote automotive trades and basically talk to anyone who wanted more information on the services TAFE can provide. On the fun bus, there were four RITAFE representatives, four students and two industry representatives. We were up at the crack of dawn to be at our site at 7am ready for the day’s tasks, which included a tyre changing competition for the prize of a grid walk 20mins before the big race and an X-box lap of Bathurst which had the prize of a paddock pass. We also had a panel beating apprentice with a couple of panels he was getting the public to hit with a hammer and he would give demonstrations and tips on how to repair it. This was very popular with all the restoration enthusiasts and proved to be a big crowd attraction. From my point of view it was worth it for TAFE to promote themselves in this environment and hope they get the gig again next year. It was my first Bathurst experience and thank them greatly for asking me to assist.
