The goal of the Center for Excellence is to share Hutchison’s tradition of excellence with the greater Memphis community through offerings in academics, arts, athletics, education, and leadership. Instructors in each of the Center’s six academies strive to awaken and inspire artists, athletes, and scholars and to engage leaders, educators, and parents in thought-provoking classes and lectures. There is truly something for everyone! Started in June 2004 with 70 students as an Arts Academy, the Center for Excellence today hosts over 10,000 participants from 100 different schools a year in skill building classes, workshops and clinics, one-time events, showcases and rentals. We welcome you to our campus and learning community.

SCHOLARS ACADEMY Humanities PERRE MAGNESS SERIES ON MEMPHIS HISTORY AND ISSUES The Perre Magness Series on Memphis History and Issues is a tribute to Perre Magness, one of Memphis’ most distinguished historians and writers. Throughout the school year, research projects, speakers, and panels help girls understand Memphis’ uniqueness as a city. This year’s projects will center on the theme ‘Memphis Roots’ and explore the founding of Memphis, agriculture and native plants, wetland habitats, and how they have inspired the culinary traditions of Memphis. GENIUS MAKERS AND ARTISTS CLUB For girls and boys grades 3-7 Explore a variety of interests in an open studio! Write and make and create works of art in several different mediums. CYBERSECURITY In partnership with the Girl Scouts For girls grades 2-6 Learn about on-line safety and sharp tech savviness. This experience is for any interested girl. For girls and boys grades JK-2 Spend time outside learning the basics of vegetables, fruit, and flower gardening. What zone do we live in? Where should we plant? How much do we water? Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math COON CREEK FOSSIL DIG For Hutchison girls in grades 3-8 Explore field paleontology in an in-depth study of the Cretaceous fossil deposits over 70 million years old at Coon Creek Science Center. Learn about the ancient ocean environment of West Tennessee while collecting fossils from the creek bed. Learn how to dig, clean, and preserve the fossils. DESTINATION IMAGINATION The DI program at Hutchison provides unique educational experiences across seven project-based Challenge types–Technical, Scientific, Engineering, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Service Learning, and Early Learning. This entirely learner-focused methodology empowers students to take the lead and provides a framework within which they can take risks and learn from failure. DESTINATION IMAGINATION For girls and boys in grades 3-12 Build your creativity, design thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills on grade level teams. Teams solve one of six open-ended, STEAM-based challenges to present at tournaments. Two levels of DI participation are offered: Regional Teams will meet one afternoon per week and will present their challenge solution at the regional level only. Regional teams will not be eligible to advance to the state or global tournaments. Global Teams will meet two-three afternoons per week and/ or on Saturday mornings. Global teams will present challenge solutions at the regional and state levels and commit to attending Global Finals if they advance from the state tournament. THE HUTCHISON
CREATIVE BALLET CENTER Our program focuses on a dance education grounded in ballet and modern technique, with an emphasis on student driven choreography. Throughout the year, while honing dance technique, the dancers dive into a project that begins with group brainstorms, followed by project research and choreography skills. Led by dance educators Louisa Koeppel and Katy Stanfield the dance ensemble brings their work together, culminating into a final spring dance concert.
Dance PRE-BALLET For girls in PK and JK Pre-Ballet offers a gentle introduction to the tradition of ballet by reinforcing basics and vocabulary through creative activities and imagination. SIDEKICKS, HUTCHISON’S FALL MUSICAL This brand-new, never produced show has been a secret project over the last three years by none other than our own Dr. Barry Gilmore, senior Katy Gilmore and sophomore Zoe Gilmore. Sidekicks story examines a year-in-the-life of Superhero Sidekick wannabes. The themes center on finding your superpower and coming of age. Filled with memorable characters, lines and tunes, this is going to be an amazing project.
YIDA PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT AND SCENES FROM ANONYMOUS Hutchison is hosting The Yida Photography Exhibit from January 17-February 10 in the theater lobby. The Yida Exhibit is an immersive experience that shares what life is like in the refugee camp, who the refugees are, and aspects of their Nuba culture. The theatre department will mount selected scenes from the play Anonymous, based on a retelling of Homer’s The Odyssey. This play explores themes of displaced people, the hero’s journey, abandonment and family. A short matinee is scheduled during our upper school Equity and Inclusion Week and will be performed by Hutchison’s upper school girls.
HONK! JR. MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSICAL Honk! is a musical adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story The Ugly Duckling, incorporating a message of tolerance and the power of difference. Witty dialogue accompanies a bouncy score.

CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE
GENERAL INFORMATION Center for Excellence General Information Admission is granted to qualified students in the order in which completed registration forms with payments/deposits are received. Hutchison welcomes qualified students of any race, color, religion, or ethnic origin to program activities. Registration is required for each Center for Excellence offering. Sessions are filled on a first-come basis, please enroll early. Any registrations received after a class that has reached capacity will be voided with no charge processed. Communications:
All general information communications from the Center for Excellence, including enrollment confirmation, registration agreements, statements, and class/ camp/workshop logistics and information letters, will be sent via email to the address listed for Parent One (P1) in the system. Performance and parent observation information will be sent to both P1 and P2 email addresses. There is an option in your profile to opt into text messaging. All class cancellations or day-of changes will be sent by email and text message. If you prefer to receive notifications by text, please be sure to opt in for texting in your profile. Refund Policy: Center for Excellence fees are refunded in full when the session for which an enrollment was submitted is at capacity or the session is canceled by Hutchison. Except in the cases of illness or emergency that are disclosed to the Center for Excellence office prior to the start of an activity, refunds will not be given after a session begins. For Center for Excellence classes, a withdrawal request that occurs at least five (5) business days prior to the first class meeting will result in a refund/credit of fees. After five (5) days prior to the first class meeting, there will be no refund of fees. Transportation and Supervision:
Students should arrive on time and be picked up promptly at the end of each class. For the safety and security of all participants, girls and boys left unsupervised on campus after sessions will be escorted to SPARK Extended Care. Parents will be charged $15 each day. An additional charge of $5 each minute will be assessed for all SPARK campers remaining on campus after 6:05 pm. Attendance:
