16 L E F T On August 21, girls from lower, middle, and upper school, along with faculty and staff, witnessed the solar eclipse, the first coast-to-coast total eclipse in 99 years. Lower school girls learned about the history of the eclipse, while middle school girls drew the progress of the eclipse in their science lab notebooks. They also watched a broadcast of an Air and Space Museum simulcast with commentary from areas of totality. Upper school girls discussed the eclipse in their science classes and advisory in preparation for their viewing. Even though there were some clouds, everyone got a few chances to see the moon passing in front of the sun. This was a great way for all of our girls to have a tangible science lesson. It’s something they’ll never forget!

The Solar-Powered, Girl-Powered Wash Station by Mary Riddle, Hutchison Horticulturist

IN THE FALL OF 2016, I was busily tucking tiny kale seeds into the warm soil of the Hutchison farm, when a freshman girl wandered in through the gate. “Hi, Mrs. Riddle! My name is Elizabeth [Austin ’20]. I’ve designed a solar-powered vegetable wash station that will capture rainwater and allow us to clean the water using a small motor and a UV filtration system. I’ve created a budget for it and a preliminary design. Would you like to see it?” Surprised and curious, I asked her if this was a class assignment. “Oh, no,” she says, “I’m doing this just for fun.” For fun, I later found out, was in between her classes, quiz bowl competitions, and running tech for two school plays—but I digress. Working with Henry Hampton, our physical plant director, Elizabeth fine-tuned her idea, and her plan and budget were approved. Parts were ordered, and the plan was set in motion. Elizabeth spent three weeks this summer at the farm building the station, along with two wonderful members of the Hutchison maintenance staff, Carnell Benton and Napoleon Logan. Even on 100-degree days, she could be found at the top of a ladder, nailing shingles into a roof or unloading the latest shipment of lumber. She ran the show with grit and grace. In August 2017, Elizabeth put the finishing touch on her project: the solar panel! With several second- and

fourth-grade classes observing, she climbed onto the roof and installed it. Within a few minutes, the battery was charged up enough to get the pump working. Rainwater had collected in a barrel over the summer, and with the flip of a switch, it was pumped through to the sink. The younger girls were full of questions: “Did you have to make several versions of your plan, or did you get it right the first time?” and “How do solar panels work?” and “Where does the water go once it’s used?” Elizabeth may have inspired an entire new generation of budding scientists and engineers!

Hutchison Girls Excel in Competitive Math Exam Several Hutchison girls excelled in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) 10/12 examination sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. The Association’s AMC program leads the nation in strengthening the mathematical capabilities of the next generation of problem-solvers. This test assesses proficiency in mathematical concepts and problem solving, and each student takes the three-hour examination twice. Last year more than 150,000 students and 3,500 schools competed nationwide at grades 10 and 12. Hutchison’s AMC 10 winners included Sally Crow ’19 (2nd place), Anne Grinder ’19 (3rd place), Michelle Lee ’19 (2nd place), Lilly West ’19 (3rd place), and Charlotte Merchant ’19 (1st

HUTCHISON SCORES VICTORIES IN LACROSSE, TENNIS, AND TRAP

OUR VARSITY LACROSSE TEAM ran away with its seventh consecutive state title in May, finishing strong in the Tennessee Girls Lacrosse Association (TGLA) Championship by defeating Harpeth Hall, 18–7. Hutchison’s varsity lacrosse team topped out at #23 in the nation, and is ranked #1 in the state of Tennessee and #2 in the South by US Lacrosse Magazine. The senior athletes who graduated in 2017 can boast a four-year streak of varsity championships.

TENNIS: In September, sixth-grader Melanie Woodbury ’24 was one of three girls invited to represent Tennessee in the Southern Junior Tennis Cup. She played on a team against some of the best tennis players from across the country, and her team won the tournament. As an 11-year-old, she ranks among the top 100 players in the nation, #18 in the South for 12 and under, and third in the state in her age division. Woodbury has been playing tennis since she was six years old.

TENNIS: Grace Anne Dunavant ’19 and Catherine Owen ’17, members of Hutchison’s No. 1 doubles tennis team, won the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Girls’ Tennis Division II AA Doubles Championship in May. Capping off an impressive season, they defeated Chattanooga’s Baylor, 6-3 and 6-4. The victory gave Owen and Dunavant an 18-1 record this year and helped lead Hutchison’s varsity tennis team to its 11th consecutive Division II West Region title. Owen is continuing her athletic career at the collegiate level at Sewanee.

TRAP: Hutchison’s varsity trap team performed well at the trapshooting state championships in June, finishing with the top score among female teams in Memphis. Cooper Matthews ’17 scored a nearly perfect 99 score, which marked her personal best. Greeley Lindberg ’18, Ally Adock ’18, and Ella Larkin ’18 each shot over 90 as well, all setting personal best records.

the “Microsoft Best Classroom” award for his outstanding and innovative integration of Colombian culture curriculum into the Spanish language education of his classroom. Sr. Salazar hosted students from Colombia as part of the celebration of that country for the Memphis in May International Festival. Members of the Cancilleria Colombia music troops of Tumaco and Palenque visited the school, meeting with girls in Sr. Salazar and middle school Spanish teacher Sra. Glenda Akers’ classrooms. Our Colombian visitors, who spoke no English, practiced Spanish with our girls through conversation and interactive games.

Hutchison welcomed Jim Jaggers, WREG-3 meteorologist and leader of Go Jim Go, and his fantastic team of bike riders, to campus. As part of Hutchison Serves, lower school girls raised funds to present to him for Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. In addition, several lower school girls decided to use their own money to buy toys for Le Bonheur’s patients. Iron Woman Rebekah Askins, one of our Crain Center fitness specialists, was one of three females who joined Jim on his ride. Askins helps girls identify ways to make health and wellness a part of their everyday lives. She is a great role model, and we were happy to cheer her on.

At the WorldStrides Heritage Music Festival competition in New Orleans, Hutchison’s 2017 Vocal Point choir, under the direction of Leiza Collins, was awarded a Gold ranking, earning first place in their division with scores of 94/95/96 out of 100 from the three-judge panel. The win earned them a trip to perform at Carnegie Hall. Sarah Austin ’17 and Olivia Wilkinson ’17 received outstanding vocalist and ovation awards, respectively. 6 | Hutchison

Hutchison junior Sally Crow ’19 ran the light board for 9 to 5, The Musical at Playhouse on the Square. Working with a professional stage manager, she was responsible for all light cues throughout the production. Crow has been refining her craft at Hutchison since she was in fifth grade, and last year, designed the lighting for a variety of school productions, including the upper school play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She attributes her success to the guidance and encouragement she received from Hutchison teacher Louisa Koeppel and many other members of our faculty.

Q & A | DR. KRISTEN RING

We asked Dr. Ring about her experiences and her educational philosophy.

How did you choose to work in education?

In traditional teaching, the teacher tells students what they should learn and asks specific questions to get an anticipated answer. It’s almost formulaic. You can do that year after year, but then every student has the exact same experience. If a teacher invites girls to have a voice in what and how they’re learning, it’s more work, but it’s more rewarding. You begin to see that they are capable of far more reasoning because

During my senior year in high school, in addition to my AP classes, I signed up for a vocational education class. While in class, I listened to the other kids around me. It was shocking to me because there was a whole group of students who didn’t like

this because it has shaped all that I’ve done in terms of education.

For instance, what does the novel mean to someone who might be a future lawyer? Why is it of interest to a girl? What are the

What did you learn during 15 years of teaching English? I learned that literature has a way of capturing students’ imaginations and hearts. Too often we get caught up in teaching a specific lesson versus watching what it is within a novel or piece of literature that really speaks to a student. You learn to walk side by side with a student on the journey rather than directing it.

How can girls drive classroom experiences and still gain necessary skills? In English, for instance, the teacher might use literature circles rather than teaching one standard novel choice from the canon. Right off the bat you allow girls some choice in the

implications in today’s society? What is a relevant contemporary example?

How did your work at Forsyth Country Day inform you as an educator? It was a unique program within the school that served as a learning lab, and as an administrator, I was a one-woman show. I essentially functioned as a division head, but I also handled admissions, financial aid, curriculum development, discipline, and parent communications. When I worked on development, for instance, I could go to the development director for the larger institution, learn what I needed, and take that knowledge back to my program. I went straight from the classroom into that role, so it was a great way to learn all of the pieces with others guiding me. It was impactful educationally, because the students who

have given up. Interestingly, I typically did not hire special ed teachers; I hired brilliant teachers who cared enough to figure out what was going to work for each child. From a leadership perspective, it taught me that you can’t think outside of the box until you have some foundation. I had to understand curriculum and the way schools worked, then apply it to a different population of parents and kids. So I called on

I have been incredibly well-coached my entire life, from literal coaches on athletic fields to mentors who are successful in so

personal relationships. And I’m looking to foster a culture and For me, results are completely dependent upon the positive experience everyone is feeling. My approach is in trying to meet the needs, organizationally, of all the stakeholders. That is a tall order. If we are focused on needs, then people can be inspired and strive for something greater.

many other aspects of life. I’ve never shied away from saying, “Teach me.” I’ve observed new heads of school who have had a difficult time because they weren’t vulnerable and because they led with ego. They were fearful of not looking like they knew what to do at all times. I’d rather admit on the front end that I don’t know everything; learning is a continuous process. We can’t talk to girls about being lifelong learners and not be lifelong learners ourselves. I benefited, and hope to continue to benefit and learn, from mentors. Then on the flipside, I’ve felt it’s my obligation to coach and mentor others.

What has impressed you about Hutchison? First of all, I’ve felt comfortable from day one; everyone I met was warm and welcoming and had such a love for this school that it was something that I wanted to be a part of. Secondly—the girls have been fantastic! These are talented, articulate, thoughtful, intelligent girls who want to make a difference and they “get it.” They get it at a level that I did not get it at 18. And that’s a testament to the teachers, programming, and opportunities that are here. Also, I’ve learned that Hutchison embraces continuous

We can’t talk to girls about being lifelong learners and not be lifelong learners ourselves.

improvement. There’s a constant, wonderful tension among faculty and staff who seem to always be asking, “What more can we be doing?” They continue to do excellent work, but they’re not afraid to look around the corner and see what’s next. That doesn’t necessarily mean making big changes right away. Instead, it means discovering ways that we can take programming to the next level. That’s an exciting place to be.

Now you’re at an all-girls school ... What opportunities do you see ? I’m excited. In every school I’ve been in, I’ve always focused on creating opportunities for girls. However, I recognized that in those settings, girls were not always able or willing to seize the opportunities. I’m thrilled that some of those barriers are automatically removed at Hutchison. Instead we can drill down into how girls are getting all that they need, and build a foundation so that they are well-prepared to tackle life’s challenges. 10 | Hutchison

Faculty, staff, administrators, and students alike have said to me, “We want to be pushed, we want to be challenged, and we want to become our best. Will you help us do that?” You don’t see that attitude very often—girls who are open to change, and hoping to learn from one another. What I love about Hutchison is that there is a real focus on finding the strength and unique passion of each girl and meeting each girl’s needs.

If a teacher invites girls to have a voice in what and how they’re learning, it’s more work, but it’s more rewarding. You begin to see that they are capable of far more reasoning because they are making personal and global connections.

What do you see as challenges for Hutchison ? The biggest challenge is raising awareness about all that goes on in our classrooms and on our campus. I think many have a sense of it, but I don’t think they fully grasp just how amazing this school is. Enrollment is always going to be a challenge because Memphis is a competitive market. Also, creating the right balance for each girl can be a challenge. What is the best way to ensure that girls have an incredibly positive, robust

Transition in many ways is simply a matter of spending time together, day by day, working together and getting to know one another. The trust walk takes a while, and I am confident that faculty and staff will extend the same grace to me that I will extend to them. I want people to love walking in the door every day and being grateful this is the school where they work. When I was in the classroom, it was all about my students. Now it is a bigger audience of people, but it’s still about people succeeding in whatever realm they’re in. She knows my work, and she knows that there are all these wonderful techniques that are now commonplace in public education, which include things like screening to detect difficulties before they are readily apparent to parents or teachers. You don’t find a lot of independent school administrators who do the kind of work that Kristen knows how to do. What have you learned that can be applied to an independent school? Most difficulties can be prevented if children receive the right instructional support early enough in their academic careers. You’ve got to understand your academic performance data and to be able to demonstrate that you are growing children as a result of instructional investments. That’s what Kristen knows how to do. The very same strategy used for supporting students applies in accelerating students. Teachers watch to make sure children are attaining milestones at the right intervals during their early years.

While visiting Hutchison, Dr. VanDerHeyden spoke about how early childhood education sets the foundation for a student’s future academic success.

putting the in field trip A Trip to the Bahamas Engages Girls With Science “It was definitely not your average summer camp!” That’s how Dr. Becky Deehr, Hutchison middle school science teacher, described a weeklong excursion to the Bahamas with 13 middle school girls in June. Deehr, along with middle school science teacher Donna Budynas and middle school assistant head Hollis Ligon, planned the trip as a unique way for the girls to study marine biology, geology, geography, and a little bit of astronomy. The group traveled to the tiny Bahamian island of San Salvador. Approximately 1,000 people live on the island, which hosts a research center where many scientists come to study throughout the year. Dr. Deehr had visited San Sal during her master’s degree work and scouted it again last summer with Budynas for this trip. “There are a wide variety of things to see, including different kinds of reefs and different landscapes.” The island has a connection to history, too: it is widely believed to be the first land of “the new world” that Christopher Columbus discovered in 1492. This was no beach-lounging trip though. The girls and their chaperones were busy from sunup to sundown. “We went snorkeling every day and most days we would go hiking somewhere,” said

Dive Shop last spring so that they would be prepared when they got to the island. The first day in the ocean was devoted to practicing those snorkeling skills and working out any issues. They started on beaches with grassy underwater areas where they spotted sea turtles, and each day worked their way up to better and better reefs where they saw different kinds of coral and fish, including stingrays and barracudas. One day they got a surprise visit from a friendly dolphin that swam around and did some tricks.

Camille Mattingly ’22 had snorkeled in places such as Aruba and the Cayman Islands, but said, “This was by far the most beautiful water I’ve snorkeled in, probably because it’s not very commercial. I had never seen a reef as healthy as some of the ones I saw in San Sal.” When they weren’t in the water, the girls were doing research on land. One day they conducted a transect on the beach, which is a series of quadrats where one observes and records the different species they see in the quadrat, including plants, sand, and crabs. “It was a way for girls to practice honing in and seeing the details that are around us all the time,” Ligon said. “That’s a really important skill for young scientists to develop.” Deehr said they also considered the abiotic factors of the different beaches. Was it windy there? Were the waves rough compared to others? What did the shoreline look like, how did the sand feel? 16 | Hutchison

“At night we talked about the fish we saw and had field guides to help us identify the different types of fish,” Prince said. Budynas said it was an opportunity for the girls to do research and report. “We weren’t just telling them that a fish was a blue tang, for instance. They were drawing what they had seen on dive slates and then looking them up in field guides. Anytime you research something yourself, you remember it a lot longer. They discovered they can find it

This Report on Philanthropy is a celebration of the generous spirit of the Hutchison community. As a school dedicated to the development of the “mind, body, and spirit” of girls, we are blessed that so many of you chose to support the unique path of each Hutchison student. Philanthropy has always been an essential part of the Hutchison story. Each Hutchison student, alumna, and family has been touched by the generosity of the community. As tuition has never covered the full cost of a Hutchison education, philanthropy has been the bridge to life-shaping experiences beyond what would otherwise be possible. In addition to all who made a philanthropic gift last year, Hutchison is extremely grateful to the countless volunteers who generously advocated for Hutchison’s mission. In particular, we would like to thank Ragan Crawford ’88 and Lon Magness, who chaired the 2016–2017 Annual Fund campaign. We also are thrilled to welcome Jean and Rob Johnston as chairs for the 2017–2018 Annual Fund campaign. This past year concluded the most ambitious and successful fundraising initiative in the school’s history. Hutchison offers its sincere gratitude to the Boundless Campaign Cabinet members, led by Will Deupree. Hutchison is fortunate to have such passionate and dedicated advocates. This is an exciting period in Hutchison’s history. We look forward to a new year filled with possibilities for Hutchison students, led by Dr. Kristen Ring, and supported by the continued generosity of this strong community. 20 | Hutchison

T HE A N N UA L F UN D: MARY GRIMES HUTCHISON SOCIETY Gifts to the Annual Fund each school year are essential to providing the rich array of academic offerings and experiences that make every day at Hutchison an unrivaled and transformational educational opportunity. Behind each of these valuable gifts, no matter how great or modest, is a story: a celebration of a transformation in a daughter or granddaughter, an expression of appreciation for an influential teacher, or a tribute to the school’s timeless mission of shaping the mind, body, and spirit of our girls. We are especially grateful for the generous leadership of the alumnae, parents, and friends who are members of the Mary Grimes Hutchison Society. Their collective gifts of $1,000 or more to the Annual Fund total more than 80 percent of the Annual Fund.

April 30, 2018 at Ridgeway Country Club

SPECIAL THANKS to the golfers, sponsors, and the event planning committee who supported Hutchison athletics through our annual Golf Scramble in May. Despite the cold weather early in the day, it turned out

to be a great afternoon for golf at Chickasaw Country Club. We would also like to congratulate all of our teams on their successes especially our overall winning team.
