.1027 is a modernist villa tucked away on a cliff side in Roquebrune-Capmartin, France.
Built and designed between 1926-1929 by architect Eileen Gray, the house acted as her own personal summertime getaway. Though new to architecture, Gray studied the elements of sun, wind, and the surrounding landscape in order to design a compact, yet spacious home. The two story home captures the full potential of the Mediterranean coast with its floor to ceiling windows, generously large terrace, and a roof for sunbathing. Challenging, Le Corbusier’s belief that a house should be a machine for living, Gray implemented many forms of her interactive furniture in order to create the perfect living space. Partnered with Enya Barquia, we researched and analyzed E.1027 in order to create orthographic
drawings,
conceptual
diagrams, and a 3/16”=1’-0” wood model.

ONDO MATERIALIS STUDY
T
he material study for E.1027 focused on the concept of repetition, volume, and void. The
2-D board calls upon the illustrated diagrams of the house. The black represents volume and the white represents void. The concept brings forth the idea that the volumes and voids share a balance amongst the interior and exterior of the home. They are bound together by the repeating horizontal lines, symbolizing the repetition of the window panes found along the western facade of the home. The 3-D model calls upon the main materials used in constructing E.1027. Concrete, steel, and glass. The model again constructs the concepts of repetition, volume, and void. The movable Plexiglas panels serve as the repetition of the moving windows in the home. The volume, similar to the home, is the concreate block, while the void is created under the overhanging Plexiglas.

hen creating the visitor center for E.1027, I wanted to contrast the home’s
rectilinear form, while showing precedence by extruded the center’s form over the house. My studies began by examining and constructing abstract forms that would significantly differ from the exterior of E.1027. Other concepts that were touched upon were compression and expansion, funneling, and light. Such concepts were extracted from the conceptual analysis of E.1027. Though I wished to contrast the house, it was important to incorporate these basic fundamental concepts. In order to execute each concept, it was necessary to consider the surrounding slope and procession. By doing so, I produced a form based upon a new procession towards the roof of E.1027.

and communicating ideas. Our final project consisted of creating a marketing package for the visitor center. Part of the marketing package displayed a logo, interior/exterior perspective, and an advertisement. The logo, showcases a simple representation of the house title E.1027, as it is enclosed by a rectilinear box. The abstract angles, taking hierarchal value over E.1027, represent the visitor center’s contrasting and ascendance form. The advertisement illustrates a nighttime dance event being held in the main gallery space of the visitor center.
