Oriel Davies A Sense of Place

Liz Fleming-Williams is a geographer interested in the relationship between culture and environment and the political policies that affect them. Liz set up her own photography business in the 1980's and was the first person to produce postcards of rural Wales with bilingual captions. Her recent collaboration with the Wales BAFTA award winning sound recordist Simon Fraser produced immersive work - a stillffilm - a combination of still images and acoustic ecology with natural sounds recorded in 5 dimensions. In the age of the ‘Anthropocene' when human life determines the future of the planet, and with so many people disconnected from the natural world, the importance of those who take the time to watch, record and write, becomes ever greater.

With Chris Kinsey and Liz Fleming - Williams Launch of the Oriel Davies 2014 Writing Competition

Saturday 17 May Morning session: Launch of the Oriel Davies 2014 Writing Competition and writing workshop on the theme of A Sense of Place, using some of Liz Fleming Williams’ work as a stimulus. 10.30am - 12.30pm Afternoon session: Open mic followed by readings by Chris and Liz, both on the theme A Sense of Place. There will be a screening of Liz Fleming Williams’ film Gwesyn. 2 - 3.30pm

GWESYN stillffilm The first documentation that Sarn Cambria has produced is Gwesyn, a 30 minute stillffilm that follows the journey of the Afon Gwesyn from its source at over 2000' on the plateau in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains, to where the river joins the Afon Irfon at Abergwesyn. The medium allows for observation of sound and details in the landscape which would probably be missed in a more conventional format. Chris Kinsey draws much inspiration for her various writings from the Mid Wales and Border landscapes. She has been BBC Wildlife Poet-of-the-Year, Natur Cymru’s ‘Inspired by Nature’ competition winner and Oriel Davies’ Writer-in-Residence 2011 -13. Chris has had three collections of poetry published: Kung Fu Lullabies and Cure for a Crooked Smile with Ragged Raven Press and Swarf by Smokestack Books. She also writes nature diaries for Cambria.

Cost: Single session £4.50 or £7.50 for the day
