Products for a sustainable future
One of the key ways in which products can contribute to better ratings in the Code for Sustainable Homes or BREEAM, is in the ‘material’ categories. To do this an A or A+ rating in the Green Guide is essential.
Domestic roof construction – pitched roof, timber construction Pitched roof construction
Fibre cement Fibre cement is an exceptionally sustainable material. Due to its light weight, the embodied carbon of fibre cement per m² is 5 times lower than heavy building materials*. It is a light weight material requiring lighter building structure with lighter foundations resulting in less concrete needed. Marley Eternit fibre cement does not rust, rot or corrode, is made from simple, readily available materials – cement, water, cellulose, textile fibres – and has a low carbon footprint. The cement content is sourced from regional quarries and the cellulose from sustainable forests.
Concrete Our concrete range of roof tiles use in excess of 10% of recycled material (Ecologic uses not less than 55%) and are weatherproof, durable and long-lived.

Our clay plain tiles have the lowest laid weight on the roof (compared with our competitors) and therefore require less fuel to transport the product to site.

All Marley Eternit roofing materials can be used with various fixing systems to incorporate high levels of insulation thereby achieving increased thermal (and often acoustic) efficiencies.

Code for Sustainable Homes
Materials credits within BREEAM
The Code replaced EcoHomes in England in 2007 and is designed to ensure homes are built to progressively improving sustainability ratings and that, by 2016, all newly built homes achieve the highest (level 6) zero carbon rating.
Credits are awarded in each area according to performance. A set of environmental weightings then enables the credits to be added together to produce a single overall score.
Marley Eternit roofing products, in conjunction with insulation and other products can help materially improve the sustainability and code ratings of newbuild and refurbished housing by contributing credits in the’Materials’ category.

* How construction ratings are determined: Each construction is given an element number and its rating is derived from 13 individual sub-ratings as shown below.
Used with our dry fix and ventilation accessories, they offer complete roofing solutions that can incorporate high levels of thermal insulation; ventilation without condensation and simple, fast installation with no mortar. This means A+ rated constructions with little or no need for expensive repair and maintenance and long lived, sustainable buildings.
The natural clay used in their manufacture is the very best quality and locally sourced (Etruria Marl) – minimising emissions and traffic on the road.

The building is then rated on a scale of Pass, Good, Very Good or Excellent. Specifiers are encouraged to consider these issues at the earliest opportunity to maximise their chances of achieving a high BREEAM rating. BREEAM does this by rewarding: • Materials with a low embodied energy (i.e. ‘A+’ rated in the Green Guide to Specification) • Responsibly resourced materials Measuring environmental success

This publication is based on the latest information available at the time of printing. Due to product changes, improvements and other factors, Marley Eternit reserves the right to change or withdraw information contained herein without prior notice. The information contained herein is based on Marley Eternit’s current recommendations intended for general roof applications, but where nonstandard situations occur or where abnormal site exposure conditions apply, users must satisfy themselves as to the suitability of the recommendations given. Furthermore, the advice given in isolation should not be taken as providing any guarantee of the performance or suitability of the product for specific applications. For specific applications users should refer to the relevant Standards and Codes of Practice for guidance or contact the Technical Advisory Service for advice.
All Marley Eternit Dry Fix products will have a life comparable with other components of the roofing system. Components manufactured from PVCu that are subjected to long term exposure to the weather will suffer UV degradation; this may cause fading and a reduction in impact strength although the performance of the product will remain unaffected. The photography shown in the document should not necessarily be taken as illustrating good practice. Marley Eternit’s employees or agents are not authorised to make any representations, or give any advice or recommendations, concerning any goods or services unless confirmed by Marley Eternit in writing.
The printing process restricts the exact representation of colours. For true colour reference, please request product samples. For tiles and slates, it is recommended that, to enhance the appearance of the roof, pallet loads are mixed whilst the roof is being loaded.

Efflorescence can occur from time to time in all products with a high cement content, but is a temporary effect and is not detrimental to the function of the product. Natural weathering will remove the salt deposits that cause this harmless effect.
