Overview of the Icopal DPC Range Xtra-Load Polymeric DPC’s
Xtra-Load Polymeric DPC’s are manufactured from specially selected polymers and contain no bitumen or pitch, remain flexible at low temperatures and stable at elevated temperatures. They are resistant to ageing and shrinkage and can withstand high superimposed loads. Xtra-Load Pro-Build DPC - A high performance polymeric DPC 1.1mm thick, available in a range of widths from 100mm to 1m x 20m long. Xtra-Load Housing DPC- A high performance polymeric DPC 0.85mm thick, designed specifically for the house builder; available in a range of widths from 100mm to 600mm x 20m long. Xtra-Load Bitumen Polymer DPC’s
Xtra-Load Bitumen Polymer DPC’s are manufactured on strong polyester reinforcement with SBS modified bitumen on both sides and finished with a fine silica sand on both sides enhancing mortar adhesion. Xtra-Load Alumite DPC - A High Performance Gas Resistant Polymer Modified Bitumen DPC with an Aluminium Core, 3mm thick, available in a range of widths from 100mm to 1m x 8m long. Xtra-Load Elite DPC - A High Performance Polymer Modified Bitumen DPC 1.72mm thick, available in a range of widths from 100mm to 600mm x 20m long. Xtra-Load Nubit DPC - A robust and flexible bitumen DPC, 3mm thick, available in a range of widths from 100mm to 1m x 8m long. Xtra-Load Polyethylene (BS6515) DPC
Xtra-Load Polyethylene DPC consists of a black low density polyethylene sheet complying with the requirements of BS 6515 Xtra-Load Polyethylene DPC – At 0.5mm thick it is a cost effective alternative to traditional bitumen DPC’s suitable for house construction and is available in a range of widths from 100mm to 750mm x 30m long. Xtra-load Radon DPC Xtra-load Radon DPC is a three layered membrane manufactured from a virgin blend of polyethylene that is designed to prevent ingress of radon gas and prevent ingress of moisture from the foundation into the brickwork. The membrane has a grained top and bottom surface for optimal friction resistance between the mortar, brick and foundation. Xtra-Load Radon DPC – A 0.55mm thick Polyethylene DPC suitable for all types of construction where Radon resistance is required, available in widths of 300mm, 450mm, 600mm and 900mm x 20m long. Xtra-Load Pre-Formed Cavity Trays
Pre-Formed Cavity Tray Units are manufactured from a strong specially formulated polymeric membrane allowing joints to be high frequency welded eliminating the use of additional adhesives and weak glue lines. Pre-Formed Cavity Tray Units are designed to simplify detailing and installation at changes in direction and awkward details, whilst ensuring a watertight joint is formed and maintained. A comprehensive range of pre-fabricated Stop Ends, Corners and Change of Level units is available allowing for cavity drops of 150mm and 225mm for use in both brick/block and concrete frame/surfaced fixed construction. A range of clear cavity widths between 50mm and 75mm can be catered for with one unit. For the full range of units, sizes and product codes please refer to pages 14 - 17.

Xtra-Load Accessory Range
A range of accessories specially designed to compliment our DPC’s, ensuring waterproofing performance and make for speedier and secure installation and complying with the requirements of the current Codes of Practice. Xtra-Load DPC Joint Support System Xtra-Load DPC Joint Support System makes for secure and waterproof lap joints in cavity trays. The use of joint supports meets the requirements of the current Codes of Practice which state that all joints in cavity trays must be supported. For product sizes and product codes please refer to page 17.
Icopal Jointing Tape A thin waterproof and strong self adhesive double sided tape with an aggressive adhesion for jointing all DPC’s and cavity tray units. For product sizes and product codes please refer to page 17.
DPC Fixing Strip – A flexible plastic pre-drilled strip to secure surface fixed cavity trays. For product sizes and product codes please refer to page 17.
Xtra-Seal QD Bitumen Primer – A solvent based quick drying bitumen primer for substrate preparation. For product sizes and product codes please refer to page 17.

Installation and Site Work Handling and Storage
Icopal storage and handling instructions for each of the products must be followed at all times, damage as a result of incorrect storage will not be accepted by Icopal. Icopal DPC’s are delivered to site in cut rolls secured by a paper belly band bearing the name of the product, roll size and company details. Where appropriate British Board of Agrément and other accreditation details are also identified on the packaging. All DPC’s and associated products must be stored on a flat level surface away from the ground, under cover and away from sources of heat. Any particular handling and storage instructions on the packaging must also be followed. In excessively cold conditions DPC’s and associated products should be stored in a warm environment for at least 24 hours ahead of installation, this will make unrolling and handling easier in cold conditions. It should not be assumed that because the ambient temperature is as required for laying masonry the DPC roll is at the same temperature, if left outside overnight.
Site Safety
Construction sites can be a dangerous environment and the construction of masonry structures means that you may be working at height and as such all necessary personal protection equipment must be made available and worn at all times. In particular adequate and safe scaffolding must be provided, capable of being loaded with bricks, mortar, damp proofing materials and the like. Adequate edge protection and kick boards must be provided in line with the relevant safety requirements for construction sites.

General Installation
Icopal DPC’s are installed in accordance with current Icopal instructions and the current Codes of Practice for the Installation of Waterproofing and Workmanship for Work on Site for Masonry. • Care must be taken to follow the specification and details to ensure the continuity of the DPC at ground level with the Damp Proof Membrane.
Details Showing Continuity of DPC and DPM
• All DPC’s at ground level must be maintained a minimum of 150mm above the finished ground level, including when stepping a DPC on a sloping site. • All DPC’s must be laid between an even, fresh bed of mortar in continuous lengths for the full width of the wall or leaf and preferably project beyond the finished external face of the external leaf. (including any externally applied render) • Perforations in adjacent courses of brickwork must be completely filled with mortar. • Where a separate DPC is laid on each leaf at the base of a wall it is essential that the DPC is not allowed to project into the cavity allowing mortar droppings to build up and cause possible bridging of the cavity and moisture penetration across the cavity to the inner leaf. • All overlap joints must be a minimum of 100mm and sealed with Icopal Jointing Tape. • Xtra-Load Pre-Formed Cavity Tray Units must be used at all stop ends, corners and changes in level of cavity trays. • Where the cavity tray passes columns and wind posts etc. that project into the cavity special Pre-Formed Cavity Tray Units must be designed and detailed. • Xtra-Load DPC Joint Supports must be positioned behind each cavity tray joint. • Cavity trays must be fixed diagonally across the cavity, stepping down towards the outer leaf a minimum of 150mm.

• Where the junction between a pitched roof and a cavity wall forms a sloping abutment then a system of stepped cavity trays should be installed. • Where a parapet wall is finished with a masonry coping a horizontal DPC must be installed and supported across the cavity immediately below the coping. • Weepholes are required in the outer leaf of cavity construction immediately above a cavity tray. These are formed by leaving open perpendicular joints at a maximum of 900mm centres (every 4th. brick). A minimum of 2 weepholes is required over each window/ door opening.
Cleaning Cavities
With all DPC materials damage can occur when cleaning mortar droppings from the cavity unless care is taken. The following recommendations should prevent damage occurring; • Cavity battens should be used to prevent excessive mortar droppings reaching the DPC. • Mortar droppings should be removed before they have time to harden. • Implements such as steel rods should never be used to clean cavities. • All DPC’s should be checked for damage as work proceeds and repaired as required to the satisfaction of both the contractor and the manufacturer.
