Investment in UK manufacture
Fuels and raw materials
Our commitment to UK manufacture gives you an environmental advantage, putting compliant, sustainable construction within your grasp.
Nearly 50% of the energy for our kilns is from biomass and other waste derived fuels against an industry average of 15%. For every tonne of cement produced, Hanson recovers 130kg of waste through its use as raw material or fuel.
Air quality Hanson Cement is 50% better than the industry average in terms of environmental burden, a measure of the combined impacts of non-carbon emissions on the environment.
Transport Hanson Cement meet around 33% of cementitious demand, either in 25kg bags supplied through builders merchants or delivered in bulk by road and rail. Hanson Cement operates its own fleet of vehicles for the delivery of cement and GGBS. Environmental performance is closely monitored for fuel economy and emissions. The introduction of a paperless e-ticketing system ensures further efficiency and improved service by allowing close monitoring of vehicles, effective route planning, minimised waiting time and improved loading and invoice accuracy.
Our alternative raw materials include pulverised fuel ash from coal-fired power generation and filter cake used for water treatment and construction wastes. Old plaster moulds from the ceramics industry and plasterboard, used to replace natural gypsum, is of growing importance. Alternatives to coal and petcoke include scrap vehicle tyres, Profuel processed from waste paper, plastic and other non-recyclable combustible wastes arising from households and commercial premises, sterilised meat and bone meal and Cemfuel processed from solvents and other industrial wastes.
Hanson Cement is a trading name of Castle Cement Limited. Castle Cement Limited is a member of the Heidelberg Cement Group.
Bulk Products Bulk cement CEM I Portland Cement This can be used for most purposes in construction. It is compatible with all concrete admixtures and lime. Portland-limestone Cement Recommended both as a pre-cast cement and as a general purpose cement for use in concrete, mortar, render, screed and grout. It is suitable with a wide range of admixtures and additions. Rapid Hardening Portland Cement A finely ground version of CEM I Portland Cement. It provides enhanced early strengths, particularly during the first 24 hours after mixing. White Portland Cement To improve appearance. Can be used to enhance pigment effectiveness and match some pale coloured building stones. High Alumina Cement (HAC) Cement with 40% alumina – provides heat resistance and high early strengths with a setting time similar to Portland Cement.
Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag (GGBS) GGBS is a cementitious material whose main use is in concrete. It is manufactured from blast furnace slag, a by-product from the blast furnaces that manufacture iron. The benefits from using GGBS in concrete include: • • • •
greatly reduced environmental impacts significantly improved durability reduced early-age temperature rise lighter colour
GGBS does not require the quarrying of virgin materials and the slag used in its production will not go to waste. Currently, the UK uses around 2 million tonnes per annum of ggbs as cement, which: • • • •
avoids CO2 emissions by about 2 million tonnes saves 3 million tonnes of quarrying reduces primary energy use by 2,000 million kWh saves a potential landfill of nearly 2 million tonnes
NHL 5 A natural hydraulic lime recommended for conservation, restoration and new build projects. For lime: sand mortars for stone, brick and block laying, external rendering and internal plastering. Calcium Sulfo Aluminate For use as an admixture with CEM I Portland Cement. When combined in the relevant proportions, it can speed up setting times and provide high early strength. BS EN 450 Fly Ash BS EN 450 Fly Ash is a type II cement addition obtained from coal-fired power stations. When mixed with Portland Cement it becomes a binder for construction applications to improve properties and reduce impacts. Portland – Fly Ash Cement A range of blends of Hanson CEM I Portland Cement and Hanson BS EN 450 Fly Ash. TioCem® TioCem® from Hanson Cement decomposes air pollutants. Using a photocatalytic reaction, TioCem® helps improve air quality in our cities.
Blended cements Hanson blended cements have lower embodied CO2 as a result of a proportion of the clinker that forms the base cement being replaced by an alternative cementitious addition. • CEM II/BV is a Portland Fly Ash cement with improved durability and sulphate-resistance and requires less water to produce a more cohesive mix. • CEM II/A-LL is a Portland Limestone cement which provides better inter-particle void-filling, improved mortar workability and requires less water to produce a more cohesive mix.
Packed Products Packed cement The packed cement range caters for builders’ concreting, mortar, render and screeding needs. Includes Cement and Multicem.
Concretes and Mortars – Readybag range The Readybag range is designed to make the builder’s life easier. All you have to do is add water to ensure the right mix. Quick and easy to use, the Readybag range has been specially formulated to ensure consistent quality every time.
Limes and lime mortars – Conservation range The Castle Conservation range is ideal for use in conservation, restoration and new build projects. These products allow you to produce renders, plasters and building mortars that are durable, flexible and breathable.
Lightweight aggregate (LWA) Lightweight aggregate (LWA) is the alternative to laying hardcore and secondary insulation. Everything about LWA is simple. It’s stored in the bag, collected and transported in the bag, laid at the site in the bag and covered in concrete – still in the bag.
Tradical® Hemcrete® Tradical® Hemcrete® is a unique and sustainable construction product. This product also delivers high levels of insulation, air-tightness and vapour permeability which comprises a blend of specially prepared hemp shiv (Castle Tradical® HF) and a special lime based binder (Castle Tradical® HB).
Render and façade systems – Weber range A full range of render and finishes products. The correct render on the correct background can protect a house for many years. By using the Weber range, subsequent painting and maintenance is virtually eliminated.
Concrete With Hanson Cement you can produce sustainable concrete Using the lowest environmental impact cement and GGBS from Hanson Cement gives you the potential to produce sustainable concrete. Our cement is manufactured in the UK and produces 5% less CO2 per tonne than the industry average. This is achieved by using the most energy-efficient dry-process kilns and greater usage of biomass fuel.
Concrete can be used in almost every construction and engineering project due to its durability, versatility and strength
Hanson Cement is the only UK producer of GGBS from domestic iron production. Concrete produced using GGBS from Hanson Cement can reduce greenhouse gases by over 40% per cubic metre of concrete. GGBS can also improve the long-term durability and performance of concrete.
The paper used to produce this leaflet is totally chlorine free and uses pulp from sustainable forests.
Hanson UK Hanson is one of the UK’s largest suppliers of construction materials. Our products include aggregates, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete, bricks, blocks and cement. We are part of the Heidelberg Cement Group, which employs 65,000 people across five continents and is the global leader in aggregates and has leading positions in cement, concrete and heavy building products.
