Diagrams investigating private and public relationships generated by the gestural concept of ‘folding’ and ‘bridge’ in the project. The gestural folding also help carve into the mass of the towers, creating interstitial spaces to anticipate the mixed use programs of that area.

This project intersects the High Line and creates a moment of pause along the moving itinerary of the High Line. This urban space incorporates residential and public programs. The main function of the towers are residential. The towers are separated by the public plaza which includes retail shops, local art galleries, a cafe, an amphitheater and convention space. A connection is made for private residents between the two towers through the bridge above the public plaza. The public plaza becomes an attractor to the site for neighboring blocks as well as other visitors. It offers spaces for large public events such as live theater events or conventions. The plaza differs from the High Line in that the public space is a pause rather than a constant moving path.

Commercial space beneath the plaza The ground level attracts visitors into the site with public programs. The ground level is largely open to the outside. It lets the sidewalk merge into the interior of the site, blurring the line between exterior and interior spaces. The built landscape also gradually moves people from street level to the public plaza through numerous entry points, from slopes to steps. In addition, the plaza has multiple scales of occupation, gathering spaces are scattered throughout the landscaping. At entry, the occupants are introduced to the terraces which offer a smaller scale of space. From there, they move to the large gathering space at the center of the plaza. The center of the plaza is a meeting space where people can move to other areas that offer different programs such as the theater, cafe, shops and galleries below.

EXTENDING INTO LANDSCAPE St. Augustine, Florida Undergraduate Year 3 This communal design project delves into exploring ideas that is responsive to Florida’s flat and vast landscape as well as provide different levels of intimacy of spaces. Taking advantage of the large context, the design mimics the natural contours of the landscape as well as beginning to shifts it axis plans so that it can be able to determine its own systems, ideas and plans.

7

7

Juxtaposed against the flat landscape of the context, the design seeks to introduce elements of mass and void and moments of tension and spaciousness in order to create a variety of scales. The overall plan explores ideas of courtyard, entry and transition. The itinerant begins at a compressed entry to which reveals into an open courtyard. Different units of programs offer transitional spatiality. The community has to provide spaces for work, house, play, and spiritual need. As a result, different spatial qualities must reflect the need to accommodate and speak to the different programs within the communal project.

Building of focus

BUILDING OF FOCUS

Contours of the Florida landscape are extracted into a design that envelope ideas of an organic folding. Within this scope of folding forms, there is also exploration of skin and skeleton design, and pushing wood construction capabilities . The interweaving of tectonic elements forms a multi-layered construction that is functional as light wells and also provide a lightness of forms to compliment the construction of Florida wood structures. The project also hopes to reflect its program as a fabric industry through its faรงade design and interweaving construction.

In these studies of roof structure and construction, components are layered and overlapped in an effort to create a strata of plenum space. This idea aims to add contrast to the light construction type of the building while also manipulating the relationship between roof and room space. Roof structures and components become deeply integrated with those of the main building, uniting the construction and makeup of the building as a whole.

PROGRESSION + ASCENSION Gainesville, Florida Undergraduate Year 3

Programmed as a spiritual space, this project extends from its contextual surroundings and leads the occupant on a spiritual ascension from entry to the main gathering space. The gestural wall extends out to its context and first introduces the occupant to a entry that is rhythmic in pace. From there the occupant will arrive in a transitional space, one of medium height and that which serves as a momentary pause before entering the main gathering space. At the journey’s end, the transitional space will evolve into an ethereal atmosphere, in which light is manipulated and height is dramatically increased to create a space with sense and presence one beyond the physical confines that can transcend into the metaphysical.

By weaving and layering materials, this project seeks to blur the difference between interior and exterior relationships of material and space.

PERFORMATIVE STRUCTURE Architecture Building, University of Florida Undergraduate Year 3 The concept of this project is to create an environment that acts as a extension of the Architecture Building. The structure activates the ramp space, allowing people a place to sit and occupy the area instead of merely passing it by. The perforated facade allows occupants to engage the site through sense and sight. Occupants enter from the top of the Architecture Building, then the progression from the entry pod to the end pod transpires from small, tighter spaces to spacious open ones. The design of the structure allows it to act both as a canopy and facade. The canopy allows shading while the perforated facade allows for increased ventilation. The tunnel form of the structure facilitates for this increase of air flow.

MORPHOLOGY: WOOD FRAME STRUCTURE BIM Research

Coordinator: Prof. Nawari Nawari Utilizing BIM, this research aims at investigating how an individual unit can be multiplied and expanded. Specifically, the research delves into pushing the limit of wood construction within BIM technology. Stage One begins with a primitive structure, using simple beam and column construction. Stage Two expands the beam design to a curved shape, one that changes form from one side to the other much like a wave. This stage explores techniques in which BIM’s modeling capabilities is maximized to create not only an organic form, but also pushing the constructibility of wood beam structure.

RE-URBANIZATION OF SHIBATI (18 STEPS DISTRICT) Shibati, Chongqing, China

Undergraduate Year 4 Partners: Yifan Tao, Daniel Adams Site Conditions: The Shibati site consists of 25 hectares of land. The site conditions includes highly elevated and steep terrains. There is at least a 50 meter difference in elevation change between the north and south edges of the site. In response to this, the existing buildings were constructed to take advantage of this characteristic, using the elevations to create a tiered cityscape comprised of many meandering alleyways.

Office Proposed Plan The Shibati area is reorganized into different zones, with many in its original context to preserve the character and memory of the site. More urban zones were introduced in the process of urbanizing to the area in order to meet the new demands, as well as stimulate the economic and cultural revival of the area. Additionally, transition zones are created to mediate between the newer, high density urban zones and the low density housing areas. The urban economic zones are situated at the Northwest, Northeast and Southeast corners of the site in an effort to reintroduce commerce and business into the site. By introducing new ideas, peoples and activities it will help reinvigorate the Shibati area economically and culturally.

Cultural Plaza In the Southwest corner lies the new Cultural District and the Double Balcony. These two parts function to create the Visual Corridor running through Shibati, and along which the Second Balcony serves as a platform for viewing and as a node for the concentration of activities. The Second Balcony help occupants engage the site visually as well as stimulate memory of the First Balcony. Together, the Second Balcony and Cultural District serves as a unifying factor within the Shibati area. The Second Balcony metaphorically speaks of Shibati’s ability to look beyond its current stagnant state and towards a more urban culture that still can retain its history and tradition.

MEDIATING URBAN AND MEMORY Shibati, Chongqing, China Undergraduate Year 4

The design of the museum seeks to take advantage of the steep terrain by engaging the site sectionally. The many changes in elevation allows the building to interact with the site through place and view. This allows the design to frame significant views, such as to areas beyond Shibati but also look back to within itself.

Form envelopes function is the idea that this project explores. Charged with a wrapping and explorative itinerary, the museum aims to maximize the experience of view to occupants. The outer form furthers that idea by developing a wrapping and interlocking facade and roof form. This form begins to suggests of ideas of interior and exterior relationships, explored through the itinerary.

The other component of the museum is located below the built-up boardwalk that spans the entire length of the cultural area. The gallery located underneath the boardwalk offers a more in-focused and internalized program, and serves as a transition to the other program of the cultural area, the theater.
