CHARNEL HOUSE
A precondition of this project is that nobody knows death. However, an archtect who is living in the present design a charnel house for those who dead. Through this project, I have contemplated life, time, and reminiscence. And I designed a charnel house for people who wants to recollect their friends or families.
4
Because I haven’t go through death, also I couldn’t experience death, When I thought about charnel house, I realized that it is for people who is living the present, not for the those who had left the world. To be specific, a charnel house is not needed for dead people, but it is needed for people who want to recollect their friends who they cannot see anymmore. The reason is that ‘death’ is one of events which are happened during people live. Just like ‘time’ that nobody cannot take back, nobody cannot take back their friends who died.

SPACE AND TIME Space fllows with time. Once poeple walk away frome the spot, people cannot go back to the same spot. However you can recollect and reminiscence the space that people was. By recollecting people can fold the timeline and catch the space in their imagination, even though time and space actually are not folded. All people can reminiscence, but cannot meet. Therefore, I desinged a charnel house with concept of time. By control movement and show people the passage that they have been just passed, people cad realize that they were there a few minute before and they cannot return to there like the past.

DEUTCH-AMERICAN SOCIETY GERMEN CONSULATE FOR CINCINNATI If one were to look at the telephone book for Cincinnati, one would have to impressed with the number of German names in it. This is due to the large German immagration in the nineteenth century, much of which was funneled to Cincinnati because of the pre-existing German base and because the city was booming, the first inland to compete in scale with those of on the east coast. In 1850, Cincinnati was the 5th largest city in the country, after New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Baltimore. The growth of the railroads and the decline of the South after the civil war, made the city’s position less enviable, and the rapid growth moved elsewhere, although after the revolutions in many of the German states in 1848, there was another huge increase in German immagration to Cincinnati, resulting in a further increase in German newspapers, brewers, clubs, etc. German was a common language spoken on the streets of the city until World War I. Thus, it would seem that it is only natural that there be a German consulate located in the city.

CIRCLE STREETS. Circle streets easily can be seen in Eroupe urban transfortation system. This allow people to go more than straight or right turns. And also Circle streests refresh people’s sense of direction. Crossroads allow people to keep their sense of direction so they can recognize their location or direction in the urban. However, once people go through a circle street, it is hard to keep their direction in the city.
18
CONCEPT DIAGRAM. Based on the Circle Street’s effect, I developed strategy. Once people want to approach to programs such as auditorium or museum, they have to go through forest first. People can not enter to programs from exterior streets, but they can enter to programs after they get refreshed at the forest. By refreshing, people forget where they were and renew their sense with the German social community atmosphere.

JOURNEY TO NOSTALGIA
I, who came to Columbus to study architecture from Seoul in South Korea, haven’t visited my hometown during those three years I’ve been studied. During three years, as all international students or students whose home or families are far from where they study do, my nostalgia to the hometown have been grown. Family, a home where I had grown up for my childhood, the bus stop I used to use, the orange line subway which I took almost everyday, the lake park where I walk with my mother and brother, the bakery where my father bought me latte which is my favorite, the mall where my friends and I had always been hang out, and so on. Those longing to the hometown are organic because it is not completed in one moment. It is in some way growing with the individual’s daily life or circumstances or it is sometimes recreated with new meaning when the indicidual’s situations are related to it. Thus, with time, the memories are re-percieved, re-organized and re-created in one’s perception, so eventually the memories become have a different pictures from the one that hometown actually is. There are elements which work as enzyme which makes one’s memories maximize and distort. Those enzymes can be one’s specific experience or event that happen in specific time and so on.This journey to nostalgia is mapping re-created individual’s memory by memory enzymes and see what possibilities these re-organized mapping have.

Since I born in 1985, I had been in Korea for 25 years. In those times, I had been in Seoul, Ilsan, Sangju, Pohang, Yang-gea, and Gang-nam: where I had grown up for mu childhood, where I had been for my teenage-hood, where I had hang out with my friends, where I had worked out with my family, where I had studied for undergraduate. Because I had been only those places, in my individual memory, Korea is cosisted with only those places. And Based on only individual’s perception, those locations are connected with each other. If I was in Korea, I would picture of Korea just as the Google map showing, however, the Korea in my memory has very limited and just completed with only several cities and spots. This map with conntected places will create boundary for my nostalgia to Korea.
1. International airport 2. Goyang-si ; where I had been for my chilhood. 3. Seoul 4. Yang-jea ; where my first company was 5. Gang-nam : where I used hang-out with friends. 6. Sang-ju : where my undergraduate’s last design studio site was. 7. Eul-sung : where my grandfather live. 8. Pohang: where my university is.

The orange line subway was the line that I most took. I had took this line almost more than 3 times in a week when I was student and after I graduated university, I had to take this line everyday to go to the work. So , this subway was the place where I had spent lot of time. As you can see in a map 1, the subway road is not straight. However, once I take this subway, I cannot feel any truns. Because this subway go through dark underground and all the turns are subtle. So during I’m in the subway, I feel I’m going straight under the ground. Thus, as you can see in map_2, In my memory to the subway, it has straight way. So, once I take the orange line, I feel I’m moving in a straight line. And this straight line bring me to the location where I want to go. Even though Seoul has no straight grid system, because of the effect of the subway, or memory of it, the city is recreated with simple straight urban system system.
map_2
JOURNEY_3 The town where my home is was Ilsan and where my friends and I used to hang-out was Gang-nam. And those two cities are devided with Han-river. This Han-river has 31 bridges and those bridges has beautiful lights at night. Whenever I have a dinner at Gang-nam with friends and take a bus which runs alongside of Han-river, I always sit on the window side so I can see Han-river and the bridges. Thus, in my individual memory, Han-river isn’t just river with amount of water. It is the river which has colors of beautiful bridages reflections. So, as you can see in map_3(in page 7) Han river in my memory has reflection of bridges and is devided with colors from bridges.

Since I have started study in Columbus, I thought about my identity as Korean. It was strange because identity as Korean become more important than when I was in Korea. Whenever I was in lecture or class, I kept come up with what perspective differency has between western and eastern or how it would be if I apply the theories that I learn in class to Korea culture or architecture. Thus I became to more obssesive to the Korean traditional architecture or culture than I was in Korea. And this obssession to it started to create its own images of the Korean culture whether it is actually right or wrong. individual In my memory, the dam(which is walls in Korean) with stones and sand and the trees or roofs which is shown over the dam are become the very important Korean traditional architecture elements. And these dam, roof and trees are combined with curvy lines that dams and roofs have. Thus those create collage _1.

2011_Summer Shelter Competition House 2011 is made of series of layers. The layers, composed of movable glass panels filter the environment surrounding the house into the interior. By operating glass panels, the resident can control the amount of the nature brought into the house. The spaces around outer layers are more open to the nature and those between inner layers have more privacy and protection from the exterior.
42
HOUSE 2011
Because every room is shifted side to side from the center, each room has more exposure to the exterior than conventional houses. Nature penetrates into the narrow space between the layers, and it becomes part of the house. People living in the house can feel the richness of the environment around them even in the center of the city. In addition to the movable glass layers, concrete walls and translucent panels are used for privacy and structural purpose.

CONTOUR OF MOUNTAIN
In China, there are 55 minority which consist 8.5% population of Chinese. Among the minority Miao people is the one of the group who have preserved their tradition. They maily lives in Guizhou province in China. For a long time, they have been keeing their tradition in House, Cloth, food and so on. As the one of the harmony politic all minority in one chinese government, China recently invest on tourism in Guizhou. Because of traditional life of Miao people and well-preserved beautiful nature there, many tourist are attracted to experience their life. Therefore Studio choose Jidao town(one of miao people’s twon), and design tourism village where not only provide hotel rooms for tourist but also provide studio for Miao people who are master in paper, silver, house construction, or cloth craft. Thus, this tourism village become the place where Miao people, who develope their tradition, and tourist, who want to experience miao people’s tradition.

JIDAO VILLAGE Generally, Miao people build their town on the slope of mountain. The main reason of that is the condition of the topography with many mountains. Jidao village also located on the slope of mountain and there is the river that Miao people believe it as the water of holy spirit. The dynamic topography of the mountain in this area is one of the property of Jidao village.

Our proposal, SHARP, derives its meaning from the musical symbol ‘#’, which represents raising a note by a half tone. Our intent was to incorporate this idea of ‘raising’ on a multitude of levels. At the level of the site, we are metaphorically uplifting the existing parking lot surface as a solution to circumvent the given restrictions. In physical terms, this means constructing an elevated open surface so that the pavilion does not interfere with site’s primary use as a parking lot. The act of uplifting creates a double-sided surface which has the advantages of providing shading underneath while at the same time acting as occupiable space. At the level of the city, our pavilion serves to uplift the significance of the city by acting as the new center that attracts visitors not only from the city but also from surrounding neighborhoods, cities and states. Building upon the pavilion’s temporary nature, we conceived of a scheme that would not only be easily assembled and disassembled, but also be economical in its use of materials. The structural frames, which consist of safety poles used in scaffolding, would be rented out from an equipment rental company for the duration of the installation. This way, the pavilion would generate less waste, and could potentially be serve as activators in areas within the city that have been abandoned or inactive.

I had participated in ‘2005, winter CFR(China Field Research)’ team that had a plan to research on the people who live on the Pamir Plateau. I was a menber who has charge on film report. Therefore , after I finished research with team during 2weeks, I produce the film report(12minutes) that introduce about Tagik. It was interesting to meet people who have lived in a culture that is different with mine. Tagik’ culture was very different with Korea’s. Firstly, their environment was very particular, because they were live in about 6,100m heights. Not everybody live in a home like a house I has lived in. That means all people have their uniqe and interesting life style and history. I think it is very attractive thing to experience other culture research their story.

MICHELIN NORTH AMERICA RESEARCH CENTER
98
As a premise for this project we will assume that Michelin North America has decided to change the location of its new tread processing plant from Queretaro, Mexico to Chicopee, on the site of the former Uniroyal plant. (This is fiction, though the City has said that Michelin is a prospective partner for the site.) In addition, they will move some of their research and development operation to the Chicopee Falls site, and construct a campus for the employees that will be shared with the community, developed with the city as a public/private partnership. The former Facemate site will become the location for the research and development offices and labs. Part of the facility will be devoted to an educational facility for training workers in new industrial technologies required for the renewed tire industry as well as other industries that might find their way to Chicopee. It is anticipated that there will be researchers who come for limited periods of time to work in this facility, and some housing will be provided for them. The retread plant and research facility will employ area residents as well as drawing new people to the town. For the most part, the City hopes this will spur the market for existing nearby housing to improve, as well as encouraging the development of new housing near the Facemate site. While respecting the wishes of the City for preserving the heritage of the site, Michelin wants the program for the research facility to be housed in new construction, allowing the potential reuse of the Facemate buildings for the civic program.

Interweaving grid
I assumed that there is a grid which is created by the Chicopee river. One direction is parallel to river and another direction is perpendicular to it. And those two directions become a guidance for movement. The one with the parallel to river indecate movement inside one unit. And another one with the perpendicular to river indicate movement between units. With those two grids, two movements and space are interweaved to each other.

A CUBE HOUSE

This project was given with a condition that student should remain volumn of cube(21cm x 21cm x 21cm). In this condition, student could build new shape with understanding of void and solid.

Cube Being started this assingment, I consider two concepts. First one was a question that whether ‘Solid’ and ‘Void’ are in contrast. This question makes me to think that whether those two concepts (Solid and Void) have characteristic which is against with each other. Second concept was that the given volunm of cube (21cm x 21cm x 21cm) is not going to change. No matter how much I transform its shape, total volunm will remain the same. From these two conceps, I reached the conclusion which became a base of this assingment. By contrasting, ‘Solid’ and ‘Void’ could be showed their characteristic more strongly. Also, conservation of cube’s volunm allow a formation of a relationship between ‘Solid’ and ‘Void’ Because volunm of cube have to remain the same, when I shape ‘Solid’, ‘Void’ must be formd. In this assingment, this law was indispensability and always happen simultaneously. 118

"Well, that's great. Hope it's safe on their way to here." Granmother started to look at the lattus carefully and said. "Those are looks very good. We can eat them with pork dish which my sun and granchild love" She were smiling.

SANG-JU_SOUTH KOREA
A grandfather and grandmother who were sitting on the chair looking at their garden.
Drifting Sang-ju The starting-point for this project was the question: Is a one’s sensivility could develop to a archtecture? This project is for studying of this question. Therefore, I start from a individual’s sensibility and arrive in a architecture through a logical process. From a very subjective my sensibility, I step a logical process which is agreeable to all and then this sensibility become a architecture that everyone sympathize. In this project, I start with a family garden in Sang-joo and finally suggest a collective field landscape community. Drifting the city of Sang-joo, I found the marginal places of the city. These places were just little peices between houses, parking lots, and streets. People who reside there plant lettuces, leeks, or tomatos on those little peices marginal land that no one doens’t know whose land they are belonged to. People in Sang-joo are doing something with those little peices of land by planting and growing a few vegetable. Thus, I thought that probably there vegetable gardens could be a view of124Sang-joo.
Reseching Korean 'Cha-ma bot'
Korea traditional rural area village Eun-gok Li is a village that still remain a structure of Korea traditional rural village. From this map of Eun-gok Li, we can realize that there is a peice of land in each houses. At that time, this land was called ‘Cha-ma bot’. And this Cha-ma bot used for growing vegetables such as lettuces, cabbages, and leeks. These vegetables were farmed as much as one family needed. From this map of Eun-gok Li, we can find the fact that Cha-ma bot is usually located in a house. It means that these Cha-ma bots are belonged to each family. It may reflect that people’s attachment to their own land.
126
Sang-ju drifiting site During I drift Sang-ju city, I found that there are a lots of land which are vague its uses. And peoplein Sang-ju uses these lands for their Tuet-bot (a kitchen garden). Therefore, there are so many Tuet-bot(kitchen garden) that nobody couldn’t sure who own these Tuet-bot(kitchen garden). Maybe one of these Tuet-bot(kitchen garden) is belonging to two neighbors or three.
Cha-ma bot
Kitchen garden
residency
residency commercial area Public service area
Reseching Korean 'Cha-ma bot' “Tuet-bot(kitchen garden)” was a land which is belong to each home. Therefore it was included in the area which is considered as a private area of each family. This consideration dosen’t changed. However, I suggest that to drag this Tuet-bot(kitchen garden) to areas which is shared with neighbors. By using a Tuet-bot(kitchen garden) as a public space of three or four households, neighbors can build up communites which is centered a Tuet-bot(kitchen garden). Therefore, I suggest three types of communities that share one Tuet-bot(kitchen garden).

The concept of ‘MAT’ indicates land which include residences, Teut bots, walls, public spaces, and other various areas, not just a floor or a bottom of building. I apply the pattern of feilds in Sang-ju city which have been arranged in modern to MAT. The size of this MAT is flexible. Therefore, by changing of number of households in MAT, size of MAT can be adjusted.

MULTI RAMBLAS
136
The Multi_Ramblas workshop is organized by Intelligent Coast (IC) in collaboration with the Handong Global University as part of the research and exhibition Tourism: Spaces of Fiction from the Center of the Museum of Design of Barcelona (CMDB). IC was commissioned to rethink the role and identity of the famous Las Ramblas, one of Barcelona’s most important tourist venues. This represents an opportunity to speculate on the future of this famous street and its position inside the city’s urban structure and overall tourism strategy, both as an attractor and as important historic and civic axis. The process of analysis, diagnosis and production of specific proposals are part of different workshops planned in collaboration with other academic institutions; Master Intelligent Coast, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (May 2008), the Handong Global University (July 2008), the Yokohama Graduate School of Architecture (Sept. 2008) and researches from the Interactive Technologies Group at the Pompeu Fabra University (Fall 2008). The main objectives of the Multi_Ramblas project as outlined in the brief from the CMDB are: 1.Identification of the urban, spatial, cultural, economic and socioenvironmental context of Las Ramblas as an attractor in a contemporary urban-tourist destination. 2.Critical diagnosis of processes and trends through concrete proposals for the possible evolution of Las Ramblas. 3. Definition of possible qualitative scenarios in diverse scales and degrees of implementation. 4. Definition of actions and development strategies of implementation. 5. Development of a platform for discussion with local political and social agents. 6. How do new urban developments address the new strategic goals for the city’s new model of growth?
The Pavement of Ramblas. The Ramblas street was a waterway before. This pavement is symbolized the waterway.
How does Las Ramblas fit in the network of Barcelona’s public spaces designed to handle the large visiting crowds? How can its civic meaning be conciliated with its role as a touristic and commercial venue? What are the relations between the Multiple Ramblas and the new waterfront, the beaches, the port, services close to the littorval or the new programs that could be inserted, and which could be he limits of its definition as Barcelona’s Boardwalk, its vertical and horizontal reach? Mappings are carried out to analyze urban structures focusing on Ciutat vella. To perform analysis, the categories are divided into four parts; Leisure, Local/civic, Public space, and sleeping. The first one is on Leisure. It shows not only where main attracters are located, but also which spaces are crowd with tourists. Secondly, the part of Local/civic shows the how local and civic people use the space.Through this mapping it can be anticipated that conflicts between local and tourists might happen. Third category is Public space. It is analyzed to recognize where public spaces are in Ciutat vella. Futhermore, public spaces are the place where tourists and local meet. Finally, Sleeping including hotels and residencies is analyzed. This mapping also targets to see the relationship between local and tourists.
TARGETS
Through these mapping works, the existing geographies of Ciutat vella can be expressed graphically. It is more efficient than description of words or statistic tables. Now the existing geographies are able to be read more easily.
