HANDY TIPS • Adelaide Metro – Pre-paid Metro cards are available for purchase and are the most economical option for catching public transport. The card is valid on buses, trams, and trains. • There’s a Free City Connector Bus which runs on two loops – one in the inner city and an extended loop around the CBD including North Adelaide. •T he tram service is free from the Entertainment Centre on Port Road to South Terrace, and in Glenelg. • The legal drinking and club entry age in Australia is 18 years. • Pubs and clubs are legally required to close at 3am – this is also known as ‘lock out’. Bartenders will let you know when they’re serving the last round of drinks. You must always carry a valid driver’s licence or passport as a form of identification as security staff check all patrons before entry.

Ochre Cliffs, Oodnadatta Track

• It is illegal to consume alcohol in the streets and you can incur hefty fines if caught.

What to do Traveler’s Elements

South Australia’s top 5 1. Sports and outdoor activities

2

With so much to do and so little time, you’re going to want to see the best bits. To avoid missing out, we’ve put together the top 5 – take your pick!

Pondalowie Boardwalk, Innes National Park

3. Food and wine

Australia is known for its sporting culture and range of outdoor activities, and here in South Australia you can do it all. There’s a heap of ways you can get active – go snorkelling or diving, hot air ballooning, four-wheel driving, water skiing, sailing or horse riding. During the summer Australians love to spend a day at the cricket. The Adelaide Oval has made the experience of watching cricket or an AFL game more exciting than ever – make sure you catch a game while you’re here!

South Australia is often referred to as Australia’s wine capital and the climate allows us to enjoy the best wines, seafood, and local produce. With several world-class wine regions within easy driving distance, plan your visit or organise a wine tour to experience the diverse and unique range of wines on offer. Many cellar doors offer free tastings. You’ll also find local artisan food producers making the finest smallgoods with South Australia’s unique produce. There is also an extensive calendar of food and wine festivals – you’ll be spoilt for choice!

2. Wildlife

4. Get in the water

A myriad of animals call this state home. In season you’ll be able to whale watch, cage dive with sharks, swim with Australian sea lions, cuddle a koala, spot penguins and meet Adelaide’s Giant Pandas, Wang Wang and Funi, at Adelaide Zoo. Monarto Zoo is one of the largest open-range zoos in the world spanning 1,500 hectares and is home to more than 50 species of exotic and native mammals, birds and reptiles.

A relatively safe coastline offers every possible water activity under the sun. A South Australian holiday isn’t complete until you learn to surf, go raking for crabs on Yorke Peninsula or jet-ski along the Murray River. For those looking to get some R&R, the secluded beaches along the Fleurieu Peninsula are only an hour’s drive from Adelaide. There are a number of hostels, caravan parks, units and houses available for rent in this region, which makes for a great weekend break.

WHERE TO EAT

Traveler’s Elements

Where to eat?

The state’s mix of fresh produce and world-class wines ensures some top dining experiences whether it ’s break fast, lunch, dinner or any thing in between.

Discover laneway bars, quirky pubs, cosy cafés, dessert bars, bakeries and chic restaurants making their mark on the city. The coastal suburbs of Glenelg, Henley Beach and Brighton serve up a relaxed combo of seaside eateries and cafés. What better way to end a day than with fish and chips on the beach (watch out for the seagulls!) and a scoop of creamy Danish ice cream or Italian gelati for dessert. If you’re craving more and want to head straight to the source, the Barossa, Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley and Fleurieu Peninsula are just on your doorstep. These regions are the state’s food and wine soul!

Cafés & brunch For breakfast or brunch, wander down Ebenezer Place in the city and you’ll find great cafés like Hey Jupiter and East End Providore. My Kingdom for a Horse also does a killer breakfast and the lunch menu is available till late afternoon. Visit Café Troppo for ecofriendly seasonal food.

Bar food and small plates For delicious sliders and hot dogs, Bread & Bone Wood Grill is an excellent contender. Check out The Curious Squire in North Adelaide for American-style slow cooked BBQ wings and ribs, and Electra House on King William Street for finger food and drinks.

Cheap eats Travelling on a shoestring isn’t easy, but being one of the most affordable cities in Australia, Adelaide has a bevy of great eats for those on a budget. Head to the Adelaide Central Market Food Court for a relatively cheap eat – be sure to ask about end-of-day specials! Pubs also have a great tradition of specials during the week, where for between $10–15 you can grab a beer and a plate of food. Chinatown is an excellent place for bargain meals. Enjoy a bowl of pho or dumplings at Dumpling King for a modest sum. The humble country bakery is another place to fill your tummy for a good price – and bakeries in regional South Australia are among the best. The Gallery, Adelaide

WHERE TO STAY

Port Elliot Beach House YHA

Where To Stay

If you’re af ter a good crash site and don’t mind bunking, South Australia has plenty of great hostels to choose from that will cost nex t to nothing for the night.

South Australia’s hostels are friendly and welcoming, with some found in the heart of the CBD, close to public transport and in stumbling distance of a local pub. Outside of the city, you can head to the coastal epicentre that is Glenelg and regional centres, including Penneshaw, Tanunda, Berri, Waikerie, Port Elliot and Mount Gambier.

There’s a choice between comfortable airconditioned single, twin and dorm rooms with the option to choose all-male or all-female dorms. The basics of linen, a hot shower, TV, laundry facilities and communal kitchens can all generally be expected. When booking, check what freebies are included. Some hostels offer free bike hire, others free Wi-Fi, city tours, DVD hire and beach shuttle buses; some places include breakfast or dinner, while others have daily happy hours!

Staff are helpful and can offer good advice on what to see and do while in town – some hostels are even owned by backpackers who never wanted to go home.

Hostels aside, there are plenty of other affordable choices in South Australia. There are homes and apartments for short and long-term stays, cosy bed and breakfasts, comfortable motels, caravan parks and camping sites, farmstays and stations, wilderness sanctuaries, restored lighthouses and fire stations.

WORK, WORK, WORK

What work is available? There’s landscaping, construction and hospitality but probably the most popular form of backpacker work in South Australia is seasonal. Local farmers and orchards are always looking for help with picking fruit and pruning vines – and South Australia has a lot of vines! This can be pretty hard work at times but you’ll meet some great people and don’t need any experience to get the job.

Check to see if your hostel has a job board, and some employment agencies can also help out. You can also head to www.seek.com.au

Chapel Hill, McLaren Vale

You’ll find grape picking jobs are available between October–June in the Riverland, Fleurieu Peninsula, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Limestone Coast and Barossa regions, while grape pruning is done between May–October. Apples (Riverland, Limestone Coast and Adelaide Hills), cherries (Riverland, Limestone Coast and Adelaide Hills) and stone fruit crops (Riverland) all need tending to during the warmer months. Then there are jobs for citrus (Riverland) and vegetable crops (Riverland and Limestone Coast) for most of the year. Visit www.harvesttrail.gov.au for more information.
