Brand Guidelines Version 1.0


Logo Usage Master Logo

Minimum clearspace

This is our master logo as it appears on a white background. The elements of the brandmark should always be used in this relationship – both position and proportions to one another. To ensure legibility and quality of reproduction of all elements of our brandmark we specify a minimum size below which the logo should not be reproduced.

Interface Wordmark 30mm – print 8.5 px – digital The matrix symbol always sits to the left of the word ‘Interface’ as shown above. It should never be distorted, rotated or modified. The symbol may also be used as a graphic element. See page 7 for examples of usage.

Logo Usage Master logo on coloured backgrounds The preferred background colours are white or dark grey. The reverse version of our logo should be used at all times on dark backgrounds. Other complimentary colours can be used and the version of the logo used will depend on the relative contrast as shown.

It should only ever partially bleed off the document so that the symbol still maintains its integrity and is recognisable. Images Subject Images We have carefully selected the subject images shown below. These may be used in rounded corner boxes or as background images if the opacity is reduced. If you require new images they should be bold, colourful, dynamic and relevant. We want to create interest and intrigue through content, colour, movement or unusual perspective. Please bear this in mind when sourcing new imagery.

Tone of voice is all about how a brand communicates and reflects their brand personality through words. So while our three brand values tell people who we are, our tone of voice values describe how we sound.

Direct is…

Engaging is... about bringing out Wiley’s human side. Personally connecting with our audiences by empathizing with the challenges they face. Discursive, accessible copy will engage the reader and encourage them to read on – but shouldn’t sound contrived, flippant or unprofessional.

Good engaging example:

about confidence, honesty, efficiency and professionalism. Direct sounding communications get to the point quickly. They say ‘this is what we do’ – clearly and succinctly without any waffle or verbosity – but don’t appear abrupt or unfriendly.

Today’s crowded commercial space makes getting your name across tougher than ever – especially if you want to add value so that audiences don’t just listen, but trust you too.

With so many other competing, commercial brands out there, adding value to your brand and communicating your company name is increasingly challenging.

Not so direct example:

It’s all in the balance

If you’ve ever wondered about how to make your brand even better value, why not drive visitor traffic to a Wiley microsite? Not only can it be customized, it’s a very immersive experience with plenty of high-quality, authoritative content.

Optimistic is… how we convey our intelligent, forward-thinking and innovative attitude and show that we’re genuinely excited about our work. A positive enthusiasm should come across by using active (not passive) sounding phrases – but not seem over the top, unrealistic or naïve.

Good optimistic example: Education is one of the most powerful of all marketing tools – enabling you to change behavior, as well as perceptions, amongst both niche and broad target audiences.

Not so optimistic example: In order to change behavior and the perceptions audiences of different types and sizes have, a strong marketing tool such as education should be used.

A strong and recognisable tone of voice should be consistent, with all three brand values coming through in the copy. But to sound natural and unforced, there needs to be a degree of flex in the way you write.

D irect writing must be tempered with our engaging tone in order to draw the reader in and get them interested. D ialling up the optimistic tone works well when describing new ways of working or products/services that we are launching. P ronouns, such as the second person ‘you’, ‘us’, ‘we’ and ‘our’ give the tone of voice a personal but, nevertheless, professional feel.

S ome common contractions such as ‘it’s’ and ‘you’ll’ help the copy flow and sound conversational. Starting sentences with ‘and’ and ‘but’ might not, however, sit comfortably with traditionalists.
