Editor’s Note Yes, I know what you’re thinking! Yet another magazine! Yet I beg to differ! A couple of years back, we were being told by people that magazines were finished and within years we’d be subsumed by the internet. The days of paper, as we know it, will end. Well, I’d like to re-engage those people in a conversation again. I’m of the view that the magazine industry is as healthy as ever and still retains the facility to entertain, inform, shock and surprise! Magazines are still a great way to declare community and build a bond between audience, writer, and advertiser. Of course, given the reality of economics, only certain kinds of magazines make sense anymore. What the reader likes/wants to read should also be borne in mind. So a really clear idea, a sense of good timing and a couple of sustainable competitive advantages add up to a formula. Thus is born Hyderabad Life. Here, you shall find all the ingredients that go into a lifestyle, social & a fashion mag, and you will experience all the aforementioned in the inimitable ishpeshal hyderabadi touch, because that’s what we as Hyderabadis are all about, and that’s what this magazine is going to be all about. The premiere issue has a number of interesting articles. The start has been great fun. And we have lots of ideas we can’t wait to start working on. At the same time, we would like to make you – our readers, an important resource. I invite you to become active members of the Hyderabad Life community by contacting us directly with your news and views. We want to hear about what is inspiring you. We need your eyes and ears. Tell us when you see something cool, new, innovative and interesting that is worth checking – whether it is in Hyderabad or somewhere else in the world. Hyderabad Life will be released monthly with insightful articles, anecdotes, resources, interviews, tips, and humour. It is ideal for everyone who is in search of information, entertainment, or just a little time-pass. I will leave you exploring it all for yourself but not before asking you to spread the good word by telling your family, friends or co-workers about something you’ve liked on our pages. Hope to see you in issues two, three, four and beyond! Happy Reading! Anand Rayapudi Editor info@hyderabadlife.in

Stand-up Comedy by Vidur Kapur

Finding Soulmate Xtreme Sports Bar reverberated to groove sounds of the blues, blues-rock, soul, funk and R&B when Shillong-based Soulmate came together to perform for a great crowd. This acclaimed group left everyone asking more of their talent, imagination & presence on stage. Soulmate have made 2 albums, ‘Shillong’ & ’Moving On” and have played numerous gigs all over India as well as in Nepal, France, USA and Singapore. They are going to tour Europe and Canada sometime in the middle of this year.

There was no stopping funnyman Vidur Kapur with his hilarious, side-

splittingly comedic stand-up act in front of a packed crowd at the Park Hyderabad on the 18th. The guests there thoroughly enjoyed themselves as the world-renowned stand-up comedian took them on a whirlwind social commentary of a one-man culture clash.

Akcent rocks Hyd! Adrian Claudiu Sina, Sorin Stefan

Brotnei and Mihai Gruia, Romania’s No 1 pop trio, better known as Akcent, was in Hyderabad and rocked the house at Touch by crooning their signature pop and house genre of music for their fans who came in huge numbers. This Romanian boy band has been capturing hearts across the world. Fresh from their victory at the recent Balkan Music Awards 2010, the performance saw them churning out international hits like That’s My Name, Stay With Me and Fara Lacrimi (No Tears).

Native Tongue hit it up! Once again, local hard rock act Native Tongue did what they do best. Bring the house down at Hard Rock Café. Playing their usual boisterous self, they wooed & wowed the crowds and set the night ablaze with their original tracks. Ain’t no band like this one!

Saina to become brand ambassador of Andhra Pradesh To promote Andhra Pradesh as an attractive tourist destination, our government has decided to rope in ace shuttler Saina Nehwal as its new brand ambassador. Saina has apparently given her consent and will soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding in this regard. The world number 2 woman shuttler is expected to take up her new assignment soon. “I feel honored and privileged at being chosen as the brand ambassador of AP Tourism. I hope to continue my good performance in badminton by putting in best efforts,” said Saina.

Reality Check for Commonwealth Games With very less time to go for the Commonwealth Games, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit reviewed the preparations and said the city was “now absolutely ready”. Unfortunately, the Organizing Committee has run into a rude reality check even on this front. New Zealand, Canada, Scotland and Ireland have objected strongly to the condition of the accommodation given to them, say sources. The reason - lack of maintenance of apartments in the towers allotted to these teams and their abysmal, “unlivable” condition, say team delegates. Toilets in particular are said to be in a “mess”. However, the silver lining is that Australian & England contingents are said to be happy with all the arrangements. The Commonwealth Games are to be held from Oct 3-14. Let’s hope for a successful and triumphant tournament!

Largest Youth Summit in Hyderabad The 62nd AIESEC International Congress was held in Hyderabad from August 23rd to September 1st. In addition to the conference delegates, 5,000 college students from over 22 cities in India were also in attendance at a vibrant festival called the Global Village, in which all the 7000 conference delegates showcased their cultures. With a theme ‘Converging leadership and diversity’, the student-run 10-day event focused on a multitude of issues such as sustainability, technology, youth-led impact movements, ethical business, emerging markets and labor mobility.

GOSSIP

50 Cent dating online Hip-hop star 50 Cent is looking for a “b**ch” on twitter to be his girlfriend. The star has told all his followers on the micro-blogging website he would like to find a good woman online. He has previously admitted he is wary about dating because he doesn’t trust the opposite sex.

Megan Fox’s New Avatar Oh how far the mighty fall! After scurrying away from Transformers 3, Megan Fox can now be found as Dominic Monaghan’s abused girlfriend in Eminem’s new music video for “Love the way you lie,” featuring Rihanna.

The rap star who is worth an estimated $440 million revealed he is paranoid about getting involved in relationships because he thinks women are only interested in his money.

The two spend the majority of the video screaming at each other between major make out sessions. Rihanna stands outside their house singing the chorus over and over again, while Eminem is confusingly ditched in a wheat field around sunset!

Paris Hilton is looking to venture into the real estate business Although she already carries a name famous for hotels, Paris Hilton is looking to venture into the real estate business herself with a possible chain of her own. The heiress has revealed that her exposure to this business has created an interest for her. Hilton feels prepared to take this next step thanks to watching this type of business from such a young age. 12

Emma Watson brings clothing line to royalty As she becomes known for her style, Emma Watson is going big and bringing her clothing collaboration with British fairtrade fashion label, People Tree. Watson’s line will be part of a showcase at Prince Charles’ private garden as the spring/ summer 2011 collection. This collection is apparently an environment-friendly line and is getting lots of rave previews.

Mallika Sherawat in Telugu

Sekhar Kammula on the lookout again! The industry is abuzz with the news that Mallika Sherawat is going to act in a Telugu movie soon. And none other than Amisha Patel is going to join her as a co-star. Apparently the two beauties have been signed in for a film titled ‘Contract’ to be produced and directed by Sameer who is from the RGV School of filmmaking. The film stars Arjun & JD Chakri as the male leads. Can’t wait for these hotties to sizzle onscreen!

After his cult-classics ‘Happy Days’ and ‘Leader’, film maker Sekhar Kammula is back with his new project ‘Life is Beautiful’, and he is again looking for fresh faces to act in this movie. We got to appreciate this director’s efforts as he isn’t afraid to experiment & give newcomers a chance. Let’s hope that aspiring actors do get a chance for their life to become beautiful!

An Evergreen 80s Reunion Party Suhasini Mani Ratnam & Lizzy Priyadarshan organized an exclusive reunion party for South Indian heroes and heroines of the 1980s in Chennai last month. The event was titled Evergreen 80s and 29 celebrities graced the event. Top stars including Rajinikanth, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Arjun, Mohanlal, Ambareesh, Karthik, Prabhu Mohan, Ambika, Radikaa, Sarathkumar, Shobana, Sumalatha, Ramya Krishnan, Nadhiya, Khushbu, Revathy, Suman, Suresh, Prathappoten, Poornima Bhagyaraj, Mukesh and Shankar took part in the event. 13

How to kill Ram Gopal Varma? One needs lots of guts for self-deprecation and to laugh at himself. Not everyone can poke fun at themselves as part of good hearted humor. And looks like RGV has once again set the trend in terms of openness! On his blog, he published a mail he received from somebody who was searching for ways to kill him. In an age where starry tantrums are considered normal behavior, this sure is a pleasant surprise!

GOSSIP Bhupathi and Lara Dutta engaged

Amitabh to romance Meryl Streep

The latest grapevines suggest that the Big B is going to share screen space for a romantic flick with Hollywood star Meryl Streep. The film will be directed by R. Balki. The story is about two people who have passed the time and age of romance. Balki is keen to cast the Oscar winning star and is gearing up to approach the actress, “Getting an international star is not half as difficult as it is made out to be. My concern is to make sure that the script justifies the casting,” Balki said.

It’s love for Mahesh Bhupathi! The tennis star and Bollywood babe Lara Dutta have been going around for quite some time now, and now finally they are engaged. Though the two have been spotted together off and on recently during the Filmfare awards and also during the IIFA weekend at Sri Lanka, it was at the recent US open in New York that Mahesh proposed to Lara. A very happy Bhupathi tweeted ‘So @DuttaLara and me got engaged in NY last week. Its official now…’

Looks like the success of Dabangg is taking Sonakshi Sinha places! Not only is she doing Dabangg’s sequel with Salman, she has also been signed up for the Hindi remake of ‘Kick’ opposite Sallu by none other than Sajid Nadiadwala. Three films with the shirtless wonder make Sonakshi the new lucky mascot that Sallu bhai just can’t stop raving about.

14

SalmanSonakshi the new Hit Pair!

Zandu Balm gives a headache to Dabangg Munni’s Zandu balm may have rocked the nation, but the song has not gone down well with Emami, the manufacturers of Zandu Balm. They seem to have been offended by the portion of the song’s lyrics & have issued a legal notice to the film production company for using their brand name in the song. Meanwhile Bollywood is all out in support of the ‘Dabangg’ team saying they’ve done nothing wrong.

Sonam’s Freaky Friday Pretty lady Sonam Kapoor has paired up with Priyadarshan to star in a Bollywood remake of Lindsay Lohan’s ‘Freaky Friday’. Apparently, it was Sonam’s idea to remake it and daddy Anil Kapoor will be running the project. The Hollywood original is the story of the relation between a mother and a daughter, who wake up one day to find their bodies swapped with each other. While Sonam will play Lindsay’s role, Rekha and Shabana Azmi are being considered for the mom’s character.

15

Couples in Big Boss If sources are to be believed, then it might well be that Big Boss might house 2 celebrity couples the coming season. And they are none other than Shoaina and the Mahajans. Yes, apparently the sports-couple Sania & Shoaib Malik are being offered an astronomical sum to appear in the show along with Rahul & Dimply Mahajan, who seem to have a reality show streak going on for them. Can’t wait for it!

FASHION

TRENDS OF THE SEASON The biggest changes in style for women in the season won't be Earth shattering, Jyotika Naidu

18

but they will be noticeable right away. If you've become attached to the Victoria Beckham or Eva Longoria look it's time to update now. To get in step with the latest fashion trends there are eight key areas to focus on, so out with the old and in with a bold new look!

The first place to start is with the day bag. Those oversize day bags you could carry a change of clothes in along with anything else that crossed your mind are over! Much to the joy of women that have had sore backs and shoulders, the small day bag is back. The small day bag may not hold as much, but it accessorizes better, is good day or night, and with convertible shoulder straps it goes anywhere.

Fitted tee-shirts are a good look for many women so they won’t disappear completely, But the go to top will be long slouchy tees. A scoop neck on a slouchy cotton tee is comfortable & shows just enough to be sexy. Layers are going to be in, so a slouchy tee is perfect because you can dress it up or down.

Full skirts are on the outs and bandage skirts will be the hot style trend for this season. Full skirts are finally ready to reside in a drawer somewhere until the trend comes back. The bandage skirt is going to be the “it” piece of your wardrobe. To pull the look wear a fitted tank top & a belt to define your lines & accentuate your waist. It’s a simple sexy look that is going to be a big pleaser.

Say goodbye to the pointy toed ladylike boots with skinny 3 inch heels. This season, you want to move towards biker boots. Boots with buckles and hidden zippers are a plus. Classic Doc Marten designs are exactly what you’re shooting for, but a traditional Harley or tanker boot will do just as well.

Thin girlie dainty jewelry is out. Those tiny hearts and cute little peace symbols may be cute but they have no attitude. Now think big in-your-face rocker jewelry. Big pendants like crosses, skulls, or even vampire inspired designs on thick chains are in. What is going to be especially hot are pendants that have plenty of bling.

To go perfectly with those boots you need the right jeans or leggings - and as you guessed there is a new look in town. Boot cut jeans can go back in the closet and wait for their rebirth, for this season the look is going to be relaxed fit jeans. Similarly wide leg pants are going the way of the dinosaur. Those roomy pants may have been comfortable but they do nothing to display the goods. Instead you want to get on board with black leggings. The leggings can be a traditional fabric or the ultra sexy liquid legging style if you feel frisky.

Either relaxed fit jeans or any style of black legging will go well with biker boots. The good news - relaxed fit jeans rolled up to below the knee will look great with heels and show off a toned calf so you can dress up and down at the same time and still be hot. Leggings can be worn with flats, but if you’re putting the goods on display go with skyhigh heels to get the best effect. 19

FASHION

Power Dressing

for the Man

Professional clothing is all about getting the look – the killer look that sets you apart and makes women swoon. Think about it! You have to look the part to play the part. What women want and what the corporate world wants in a man is pretty much the same, a man who looks like he cares about himself, the people around him and can get things done. This is from where the concept of power dressing arises. First popularized in the 1980s, power dressing refers to an effort by the wearer to convey a sense of dominance, confidence and professionalism through his style of dress. But this concept did not fade away like the other fashion trends of that time; it exists pretty much till now. Nowadays, it has become more about projecting the right image. A stiffly-starched shirt and shining shoes can clinch it for you just as much as business savvy and a cutting-edge education.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE SUIT In the business world, there are suits and then there are power suits, which are in a class by themselves. Power suits are the suits executives wear during those important moments, such as the meeting of the executive board, that make or break a presentation, or when the money is on the line. Power suits display the charisma, the class, and, of course, the power needed to make a maximum impact on every person in the room. Slimmer cuts, straighter lines, lighter fabrics are in these days. Whatever your role, as the old saying goes, “dress for the job you want, not the one you have.”

HOW TO GET THE RIGHT SUIT: Getting the right fit is one of life’s biggest challenges. While getting the suit made or buying one never trust the tailor alone; no one knows you better than you.

THE JACKET: The fit of the jacket shows whether a man knows his size or not. The jacket fits only if • You cannot see the outline of your own shoulder in the sleeve; • There is no overhang, or sagging at the shoulder. • With your hands at your sides, the hem of your jacket should be even with your knuckles or it should be just long enough to cover your butt. Anything longer or shorter than this looks terrible. • The cuff of your dress shirt must always protrude from your jacket by about a quarter to half an inch. 20

THE BUTTONS: Now this is something most men ignore! Only one button, please! On a two button jacket, a man should only button the top button. On a three button jacket, a man should only button the middle button. Also, if any creases or ripples radiate from your fastened buttons, your suit doesn’t fit.

THE PANTS: The hem of a man’s pants should cover the lace-ups of his shoes. And in the back, the hem should hang about an inch over the welt of the shoes. Also, a man’s suit will not fit correctly if he doesn’t know his true waist measurement. Your true waist measurement is neither across your hips, nor across your naval; its half way in between. The waistband should be comfortable enough and in general, flat front pants are the most flattering on a man, rather than pleated fronts.

THE DETAILING: It’s the finer details that give your attire that air of grace and authority,

Tie from Excalibur Available at Centro

Belt from Allen Solly 1000/Available at Shoppers Stop

Tie: Ties can make or break an outfit. Always colors coordinate your tie with your shirt. Always wear a tie clip, or tiepin. It polishes off your look with that tasteful spark of metal. Cufflinks are important accessories.

BELTS: Always wear a belt. It puts the whole look together. And always make certain that your belt matches your shoes.

SHOES: Shoes should be extremely classy but comfortable at the same time. Black, brown and burgundy are your color options. Always keep your shoes polished.

WATCH: There is no better way to give you that man-ofpower look than by having that flash of metal around the wrist. It looks extremely attractive. A piece of advice; a quartz watch always looks better than a digital one.

Formal Shoes From 799/- to 8000/Available at Centro

Watch from Longines 25,000/Available at Kamal Watch Co.

OTHERS Always wear cologne that demands attention but does not scream for it! A pocket handkerchief is important, and should be white in color. A real-leather wallet is essential. Every time you pull it out, people will note your appreciation for the finer things in life and you’ll be respected for it. 21

Girl

Next Door Though Pranitha might just be the prettiest thing to come out of Bangalore in recent times, she maintains that she’s just the quintessential girl next door. Question her on this, and she says she appreciates her fame, but values her time away from the camera & doesn’t live for publicity. This exotic, flawless beauty along with her petite frame & enchanting eyes is sure catching the attention of males all around. Coming soon to a big screen near you, Ritika Samtaney brings you the dope on the new actress to hit the block!

Welcome to Tollywood! Your new movie’s about to release. Tell us something about it. My upcoming movie, Bava is a family entertainer in which I play the role of a village girl in a very different getup. It’s a fun film with a village backdrop and is a complete package for the audience. Feeling Pre-release jitters or confidence? Some more bits of the film are yet to be completed, and there are still a couple more months until the movie releases. I guess the pre-release jitters are yet to creep in. You’re paired with heartthrob Siddarth. How was it like working with him? I have been a die-hard fan of Siddarth since high school. I used to watch all his movies with my friends back in those days and now that I got the opportunity to work with him, it has been a wonderful experience. Siddarth has been very supportive and helpful all along and he has made me feel very comfortable on the sets. How did acting happen? I was modeling in Bangalore initially after which I worked in a Kannada remake of Pokiri, I signed ‘Bava’ even before its release! Life prior to acting… Prior to acting, I lived the life of a normal college going girl. I had a lot of fun hanging out with friends but at the same time could not neglect my studies. What was going through your mind first day of the shoot? The first day of the schedule was shot in a village itself and I could see the villagers looking on very amused at the shooting taking place. I felt great to see myself in completely traditional attire and the whole atmosphere was a completely different experience for me at that point. Are you a filmy person in real life? Totally! I am a very filmy person. I always dream about the romance and lavish weddings that are shown in films. (Smiles)

28

Tell us something about your family… I live in a joint family and am the only daughter. Both my parents are doctors which is why education is of utmost importance to them. Initially, they were very apprehensive and did not like the idea of me getting into films and always wanted me to study further. It took me a while to convince them but ever since they have been highly supportive. Tell us something about your childhood… I was born and brought up in Bangalore. My childhood revolved around all the small and simple joys of playing with friends and going to school. As a child, acting was never on my mind. Your beauty mantra… Definitely a good exercise regime and eating healthy would be my beauty mantra. Being the daughter of doctors, eating the right kind of food, keeping fit & healthy has always topped my priority list. How do you deal with all the adulation & fan following? I am still in the starting stages of my career. The fan following and attention that I have started to get makes me feel great. It is in fact the best part about being an actor. Any stalkers yet? [Laughs] I would not call them stalkers but there have been people who follow me at times and some who also keep a track of my whereabouts. It is a good feeling and has not been annoying so far. Do guys usually use any pick-up lines on you? I think pick up lines are very outdated and cheesy in today’s times. Thankfully I haven’t faced any yet. What’s your idea of the perfect guy? The ideal description of ‘tall, dark and handsome’ is my idea of a perfect guy. I would also want my guy to be loyal, caring and yes, also pamper me at times. What’s your facebook status now? “Just back from Hyderabad after a long schedule” How do you like to unwind in your free time? Of late, I have started yoga and other breathing exercise in order to help me unwind. Although I find it boring, I am trying to make it a part of my daily routine.

What do you do for fun? I hang out with my school friends who have known me even before I became a star. They treat me just like another normal human being and it feels good to spend time with them. Dream Role I would love to play the role of a princess and also do a period film like Magadheera. Roles for which I have to be dressed up in different styles excite me a lot. Would you do a bold scene in movies? If the role really demands me to do a bold scene and if it is shot aesthetically, then I wouldn’t mind doing it. A day in the life of Pranitha… When I am working, my day starts off early with long hours of shooting so I am not really left with time for anything else. But otherwise, I would probably call my friends over and chill out and also spend time with family. At times I would probably party for a bit with my close buddies. I have been to a couple of places and a few among my favorites are Liquids, Touch and Punjabi by Nature. DABANGG Cast: Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Arbaaz Khan, Sonu

Sood, Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Mahesh Manjrekar

Director: Abhinav Kashyap Producer: Arbaaz Khan Music: Sajid Wajid So here it is. A new genre of cinema – the Spaghetti Eastern! The velocity is virulent. The violence is relentless. The narrative doesn’t pause for action. It is between bouts of the violence that characters take a breather to say things to one another that they don’t really mean.Set in UP, Dabangg is the story of a corrupt yet brave police officer played by Salman Khan and highlights the flaws and loopholes in the system. A world swarming with uni-dimensional characters who seem to know exactly which way the fists fly. The comic book hero Chulbul Pandey, played with lip smacking pleasure by Salman Khan, shows up in every dingy warehouse in this mofussil town to settle scores, man to man.It is the kind of old-fashioned family drama combined with a vendetta saga that we thought had gone out of fashion in the 1980s. Style, panache, zing and Salman Khan- that’s the whole and soul of the movie as it takes you back to the dhishum dhishum days. Those who are Sallu fans may watch it twice (or even thrice) and those who aren’t his fans may well become one after watching this bubblegum masala film. A total paisa vasool and a mass entertainer!

KOMARAM PULI Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Nikeesha Patel, Manoj Bajpai, Nassar, Charan Raj, Ali, Shriya

Director: S. J. Suryaah Producer: Singanamala Ramesh, Navodaya Appachan, Satya Rama Murthy

Music: AR Rahman This was one of the most hyped Telugu movies in recent times and it is a complete let down. Just goes to show that star power & an Oscar winning music director do not automatically guarantee a hit! Director SJ Suryah has failed to recreate the ‘Khushi’ magic this time around with this action movie that is nothing but a consistent disaster. A righteous police officer looks to cleanse the police force’s image through his do-good to the society formula. He forms a ‘Team Puli’ to accomplish this task. Poor screenplay, horrendous narration & over-actions by everyone involved mar what could have otherwise been a good story. The movie appears disjointed throughout. The poorly directed action scenes are laughable. Even the serious scenes like the mother giving birth to the child are gross, and she teaching him the march-past in the womb is downright hilarious. Though the casting is solid, the villains are reduced to the role of jokers. Watch the film at your own risk.

Songs that get

you High!

Sometimes, music can stimulate the sensation of being on drugs. Get high, get trippy, get passionate. Yes, a song can do that to you & most of you are nodding your heads as you read this. Most songs don’t automatically make a person feel happy when listening to them. We are talking about songs that take you into an altogether different dimension. Slowly, steadily! Hyderabad Life brings to you a eargasmic playlist that urges you to do nothing but open a can of beer, sit back and feel yourself elevate to a higher level! By feel we mean down-to-the-very-core-of-your-being FEEL, in which a person’s body and soul react to the music almost involuntarily. In a way, these songs are more like medicine (aka a “drug”) than psychological therapy because they tend to induce happiness in the “patient” without any conscious effort on his or her part.

BOOK REVIEW

Read On, Jeeves!

Hyderabad Life brings you the 5 best works of PG Wodehouse, inarguably one of the greatest comic writers the world has ever produced. These are a collector’s delight & a must-have in every book-lover’s shelf.

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (15 October 1881 – 14 February 1975) is perhaps one of the best comic/satirical writers whose works include novels, collections of short stories, and musical comedies. His main canvas remained that of pre-war English upper-class society, reflecting his birth, education, and youthful writing career. His writing style is notable for its unique blend of contemporary London clubroom slang with elegant, classically-informed drawing-room English. Many characters and locations appear repeatedly throughout his short stories and novels, and most of his plots revolve around Engagements, Impersonations, Gambling and Alcohol. The Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize, given annually for the finest example of comic writing in the UK, was established and named in his honor in 2000.

Leave It to Psmith (1923)

Leave it to Psmith is a comic novel that takes place at Blandings Castle and involves various intrigues within the extended family of Lord Emsworth, the absent-minded elderly Earl. The plot is a typical Wodehouse romance, with Psmith inveigling himself into the idyllic castle, where there are the usual crop of girls to woo, crooks to foil, imposters to unmask, haughty aunts to baffle and valuable necklaces to steal. Among the players is Psmith’s good friend Mike, married to Phyllis and in dire need of some financial help; the ever-suspicious Rupert Baxter is on watch as usual.

Right Ho, Jeeves (1934)

Right Ho, Jeeves mostly set at Brinkley Court, involves a hung-over Bertie Wooster being ordered by his Aunt Dahlia to stay at her home, so he can give the prizes to the boys at the local school at the end of term. Horrified, Bertie sends his friend Gussie to deputize for him. There are inevitable romantic misunderstandings, family arguments, cooks threatening to hand in their notice, and a hilarious scene when the teetotal Gussie, his orange juice well laced with alcohol, ends up presenting the school prizes, and insults everyone in the process. The result is total uproar, until Jeeves comes to the rescue.

Hot Water (1932)

Hot Water takes place at the Chateau Blissac, Brittany, and recounts the various romantic and criminal goings-on there during a house party, hosted by the Vicomte Blissac. The story’s central character is Packy Franklyn, an American millionaire and sportsman. He is engaged to Lady Beatrice Bracken and is staying in England. A chance meeting with the great Dry legislator, Senator Ambrose Opal, leads to all hell breaking loose when a letter written by the Senator to his bootlegger is used as a tool for blackmail. It contains a mixture of romance, intrigue and Wodehouse’s brand of humor.

Cocktail Time (1958)

Cocktail Time is arguably the funniest of four books about the Earl of Ickenham; this romp begins with the unruly sexagenarian knocking the hat off his stuffy in-law Beefy Bastable with a slingshot. Bastable, assuming the outrage was perpetrated by a Drones Club member, takes his revenge by anonymously publishing a scandalous novel about the misbehavior of the young titled Cocktail Time. Then, afraid that exposure of his authorship will wreck his political aspirations, he lets his worthless nephew, Cosmo, claim the book’s authorship and its royalties. The wicket doesn’t get really sticky until Cosmo learns that Hollywood studios are bidding big bucks for Cocktail Time. In the midst of all this, as well as several romances in need of repair, Lord Ickenham is in his element, with happy endings to the deserving and big laughs assured.

Pigs Have Wings (1952)

Pigs Have Wings is the seventh novel set at Blandings Castle where the absent minded Lord Emsworth finds himself once again embroiled in fierce rivalry in the pig-rearing arena with his neighbour, the obese baronet Sir Gregory Parsloe-Parsloe. With Emsworth’s champion Empress of Blandings in line for a third straight victory in the local show and Parsloe bringing in a ringer, suspicions run high. Meanwhile, Blandings has its full complement of romantic entanglements. Fortunately, the ever-resourceful Gally is on hand to help out.

KeyCase for iPad Virtual keyboards are difficult to use for some people. For those who cannot get to grips with the Apple iPad keyboard, this case might be the answer for you. It is called the KeyCase and has an integrated Bluetooth 2.0 keyboard built in that seamlessly connects to the Apple iPad. The case itself opens up as pictured above, allowing you to easily type whilst on the move. It’s different than having a laptop for example, as you still get the benefits of a decent touch screen and the ability to surf, read books and more whilst on the move. But for times when you want a real physical keyboard to type with, this might work well for you. The clever design of this multi-functional case allows it to protect the iPad, whilst it can easily convert into the laptop style position. If you don’t need the Keyboard it simply folds behind the iPad and out of sight. 42

The New iPod Touch The iPod Touch being the most expensive as well as most sophisticated iPod of them all, we’re not surprised to see Steve Jobs have this device updated at all. The New iPod Touch, now in its fourth generation, will feature both a front and rear camera. The front camera will be used for video calls and it will allow you to enjoy FaceTime video conversation with your friends just like the iPhone 4. On the other hand, the rear camera will be capable of recording 720p HD video. The new iPod Touch is very similar to the iPhone 4 and it will feature also 3.5-inch 960×640 Retina Display. This device is equipped with lithium-ion battery that will provide you with up to 40 hours music playback and 7 hours of video playback.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is Official Finally, does the iPad has a worthy competitor? The Galaxy Tab certainly has the potential to compete with the iPad but it will be a winner or a dud based largely on how well the software works. The Tab is certainly an iPad-like device, but there are some striking differences. Its screen is 7”, making the device a bit larger than a Kindle and substantially smaller than a 9.7” iPad. The Tab is pocketable & weighs 13.4 ounces-far less than the pound-and-a-half iPad. It has cameras on the front (for video chat) and back (for snapping photos and apps such as augmented reality). It’s not only a 3G data device but a 3G device that can make phone calls. Samsung estimates that the Tab will get eight hours of battery life; it’s hard to judge that until you know whether the company is talking like a notebook maker (in which case eight hours might be ludicrously optimistic) or is using iPad-like realism. In either case, the iPad’s ten-hour battery beats it, which makes sense given that Apple’s tablet is so much larger and heavier.

Sony Bloggie Touch captures in full HD, gets sociable It’s now brilliantly easy to shoot great-looking Full HD video clips and still photos with new Bloggie™ Touch by Sony. A radical evolution from first-generation Bloggie™ models, the all-new HD snap camera boasts gorgeous new looks with its slim, rounded body and finely brushed aluminium finish. It’s also the perfect ‘all-in-one’ solution for shooting and sharing life’s special moments, wherever you are. Available in a choice of vibrant pink, silver and black finishes, the Bloggie Touch is a stylish partner for day-trips, weekend breaks or fun-filled nights out. The camera’s cool, clean lines are dominated by a big bright 7.6cm (3”) LCD touch-screen that gives a brilliant view of your photos and video clips. A sleek new user interface simplifies intuitive ‘touch and flick’ enjoyment of your clips and pictures. Operation is equally straightforward. GAMING REVIEW

REVIEW

Plant Vs Zombies PC/Mobile

Plants vs. Zombies is what casual gaming is really all about; it’s intuitive, easy to start & stop at any time, and has a tremendous variety of game play modes. On the face of it, you might say it’s just another tower defense game in the pile of faceless tower defense games that have been made in the genre of casual gaming. But when you boot this game up, you know you’re going to get hooked to this – it’s almost like digital heroin! So this game is all about loveable goofy zombies marching down your lawn to get to your house and chewing your brains off – your defense against them is not humans with sophisticated armory but it is, wait for it, Plants for some reason known only to pop cap games! Putting together plants and zombies at a glance seems incredibly weird – it is almost as though you’re saying “orange juice vs. caravans”. But it works, this 44

combination, and it works brilliantly too because both sides feature huge amounts of personality and variety, and because plants make good stationary objects while everyone loves blasting those critters into oblivion. By the time you finish the adventure portion of the game you have about 40 plants that you can use in your defense – but at the start of any level, you can choose only a set amount of plants to take with you – this introduces a layer of strategy to the game. I spoke about its addictive nature, and I meant it. This is a game that sucks you in and makes you plead for “just one more round” as the world crashes down around your shoulders. There are tons of unlocks, mini-games and special modes to be had here, even when the main adventure is done (including a survival mode).

I really can’t speak any more highly of Plants vs. Zombies – it’s a perfectly casual title, and one that will probably keep me occupied for quite some time to come.

old ones quickly and easily. This game has also added a layer of difficulty to its puzzles, which makes the game way more interesting that the first. In the adventure genre, Monkey Island is as funny and entertaining as its older self, if not more, with new music, awesome voice-acting, and great bonus features. LeChuck’s Revenge is a much more complex game than the original Monkey Island back in the day, not only in the graphical department, but also in its puzzles. And it also probably goes without saying that you’re going to enjoy this game even more if you’ve played the first one because you’ll be more familiar with the characters and the game universe. The best thing about LeChuck’s Revenge Special Edition is that you can easily switch between the new features and

REVIEW

There are a couple of drawbacks in this game as well. The major one would be that there is no easy mode in the game. This omission could probably result out of the elaborate hint system and item highlighting that has been added on. Another disappointment was that the characters haven’t really evolved in the game as much with time.

Still, in spite of that, LeChuck’s revenge retains its charm from the original game and remakes it brilliantly with the wittiest dialogue and excellent graphics.

pacing, and some exceptional combat. The slow-mo feature is a new add-on, which slows down the world around you in spurts. This works great for open spaces in the game where the enemies close in on you. It’s fun - you can just run into a room, activate slow-mo and reduce your environment to rubble. Of course, there is also the horror element to the game. It does get pretty creepy sometimes but in my opinion, the horror wasn’t quite as effective as the first game. Maybe that is partly because of the familiarity. For instance, when Alma appears suddenly in the first game, I jumped out of my skin but now, I sort of expect it to happen.

F.E.A.R is in many ways similar to its predecessor – and just because it is similar, it does not mean that is isn’t awesome. The story of Project Origin is less risky and much more straightforward compared to the twisted plots of the first game. It has a weakness of having a slow, repetitive first half where you work your way out of a blood-splattered hospital. This part 45

The visuals of the game, coupled with the lighting and backed with the atmospheric sounds which reminds me of the office could give you the jeepers are impressive, to say the levels from the first game. The least. second half picks up pace as Project Origin may we fight our way through the not be as groundburning city. My favorite part of the game was when Alma breaking as F.E.A.R unleashed her power yet but it is definitely a again. solid follow-up. If you The game play has improved with refined graphics, better

liked the first one, you’ll enjoy playing this game too!

expert talk

MAKING PARENTHOOD DREAMS COME TRUE Many couples never expect to encounter difficulties while trying to get pregnant but infertility is actually much more common than you might think. Hyderabad Life goes straight to the source and talks to infertility expert Dr. Sunitha Ilinani of Surya Fertility Centre who discusses with us the common causes of infertility, what treatment options are available and how to help prevent fertility problems. When is a couple considered to be infertile? When a couple have been trying to have a baby for more than a year, and the women fails to get pregnant, then it is considered to be a case of infertility. What exactly causes infertility? At the heart of any infertility problem is a physical, emotional or sometimes even a psychological knot that needs professional care to untie. There is no ‘one size fits all’ answer to the question of why conception can be easy for some & difficult for others. There can be a problem with either the male or female. They could be sexual, hormonal, anatomical & lifestyle factors. Could you share some stats on infertility in our country? In India, 1 in 6 couples is infertile. In 35 per cent of cases the problem lies exclusively with the male, 35 per cent with the female, 10 per cent with both partners, and in a further 20 per cent of cases, the cause is unknown. Fertility problems strike 1 in 3 women over 35. 1in 25 males have a low sperm count, and 1 in 35 are sterile. It is becoming the commonest medical problem among people between 25-40 years. Especially in larger cities, the problem is becoming widespread due to lifestyle issues, late marriages & couples delaying babies for their careers. How do you treat them? Like I said, there is no one prescribed solution. It depends on the patient’s problem. We, at Surya Fertility Centre follow a very holistic & scientific approach given the complexities involved. We guide couples encountering hurdles in achieving parenthood through a well-structured process of analysis, elimination & evidence-based medical decision making. This is done in an ethical & compassionate manner that enables couples to gain the most of 48

the latest technological advances in a cost-effective manner. We address not only the physiological issues but also the psychological & emotional issues of the couples in our excellent & state-of-theart clinic. We have a wide spectrum of services for both male & female infertility patients. What led you to establish an Infertility clinic in Hyderabad? Generally the process of infertility treatment is a rather expensive ordeal and can’t be afforded commonly. A lot of money is spent on tests for identifying/ diagnosing the cause of infertility, then on treatment. At Surya Fertility Centre, we concentrate on working towards treatment and identifying the cause through as few cost effective tests as possible. Here we are trying to make fertility and motherhood affordable & to be a “Ray of hope to the childless”.

The facility is meticulously planned & executed to meet the stringent international standards. The backbone of our centre is our state-of-the-art IVF lab. We have procured the best equipment to help our patients maximize their chances of conception. We make available all the highly successful & widely acclaimed treatment procedures to couples in Hyderabad. Any suggestions to the trying-to-conceive couples out there... Eat healthy, be at your optimal weight, take your supplements regularly, and stay away from smoking and alcohol. But more importantly, make love regularly. Maintain a Fertility chart to check whether you’re ovulating regularly and take your basal temperature.

CHOOSING FOODS TO HELP YOU SLEEP Getting a good night’s sleep makes

your work day (or school day) go so much better. If you have difficulty sleeping, you already know how tough staying alert during the day can be. But did you know that sleep is also important for your health? People who have chronic sleep loss are also at a higher risk of being obese, having heart disease, diabetes and kids with ADHD often have sleep disorders.

BETTER

irritability and lack of concentration when they give up caffeine cold turkey. You can avoid those symptoms by gradually withdrawing. Try blending decaffeinated coffee with regular coffee. Increase the amount of decaf over a few weeks time.

If you don’t get enough sleep at night, you might rely on caffeine to keep you awake during the day. Caffeine is a popular stimulant, found in tea, chocolate, some types of soda, energy drinks and in coffee. Enjoying a cup or two of coffee in the morning is fine, but if you’re having too many coffee breaks, it might be time to cut back – especially if you’re drinking a lot of that coffee in the afternoon. Too much caffeine makes you jittery and if you consume it later in the day, the caffeine makes it more difficult to sleep at night. It can become a vicious circle. You use caffeine to perk up, but then you can’t sleep, so the next day you use more caffeine and lose sleep again that night. And so it goes.

The relationship between your diet and good sleep doesn’t end with caffeine. There are several other ways to choose foods to sleep better.

Quitting the caffeine habit isn’t easy or comfortable. Many people suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, drowsiness, flu-like feelings,

Enjoy a light bedtime snack. Choose carbohydrates and dairy products, like a small bowl of whole grain cereal and non-fat milk. Carbohydrates make it

50

Avoid heavy foods or spicy foods. Or any foods you know that may cause heartburn, making it difficult for you to sleep at night. Don’t drink too much alcohol. Although alcohol may make you drowsy, over-consumption of your favorite adult beverages may cause a very restless uncomfortable night. Eat cherries. Not only are they rich in vitamins, cherries contain melatonin, a substance also found in the human body that helps regulate sleep. Eating fresh or dried cherries before you go to bed at night may help you sleep better.

easier to fall sleep. Dairy products contain tryptophan, which promotes sleep. Other foods that contain tryptophan are bananas, oats, and honey. Avoid eating excessive fats. People who eat large amounts of fat may also have more difficulty sleeping. Be sure to get enough omega-3 fatty acids each day, however, because eicosapentaenoic acid (one type of omega-3 found especially in fish) has a role in sleep induction in your brain. People who don’t get enough sleep tend to overeat by adding extra sugary and carbohydrate-rich snacks to their diets. All the extra calories from the snacking can lead to obesity, so not only do the foods you eat affect how you sleep, but the amount of sleep you get also affects the foods you choose to eat.

Contraception it’s all about prevention!

- Nishita Malik

OCP also provide medical benefits such as reduction of pain during menses, reduction of volume of blood lost, and various other disorders which your doctor can elaborate on. If used with condoms it is the safest method of contraception available. A few users may have certain side effects as nausea, breast tenderness, slight weight gain. For those wishing to conceive, fertility returns within 3months of stopping in 90% of the cases. Missed Pill– The most critical time to miss a pill is at either end of the pack. If the user misses one pill, she should take it immediately and continue the rest as per schedule. If she misses 2 pills she should take 2 pills on each of the next 2days and continue the rest as scheduled and in addition use an additional protective method such as a condom or avoid sex for the next 7days.

Currently there is a lot of confusion amongst teenagers and even adults as far as contraceptive methods are concerned. This confusion is generated mainly due to our society’s inhibition towards discussing sex. This is leading to a lot of unwanted pregnancies and illegal abortions, giving way to a lot of morbidity and fear. Hence it is practical and important for people to be aware of all methods of contraception, their ill effects, their failure rates and what contraceptives are suitable for what age groups. This article attempts to make you aware of oral contraception & looks at some common contraceptive methods. The most commonly used male contraceptive is a condom. The efficacy of condoms can be further enhanced by the use of spermicidal jelly available in the Indian market. Condoms also protect against sexually transmitted diseases and also against the possibility of development of cervical cancer. However condoms have a 15% failure rate and some people may be allergic to latex. Another method used commonly by people is that of Coitus Interruptus. This involves withdrawal of the penis before ejaculation. However it has a failure rate of 19-25% and requires self control by the male. Besides that the precoital secretion may contain sperms and there is a chance of sperm deposition in the vagina leading to pregnancy. The most commonly used female contraceptive is the combined oral pill containing the hormones estrogen and progestins. Newly introduced pills have reduced side effects. The use of any OCP should be preceded by a visit to your gynaecologist. A usual packet contains 21 pills. A first time user must start the pill on the first day of her cycle. She must continue to take the pills for 21 days and usually during the same time of day, usually before bed time. A few days after stopping the pills the female will have her menstrual cycle. The next cycle of pills is to be taken after 7days of the last pill irrespective of whether she is menstruating at that time or not. For example, if the last pill was taken on a Monday she should resume the next packet on the following Monday. 52

POP– For lactating females, a Mini Pill or POP (progestin only pill) is prescribed. This contains no estrogen. IUD– For patients who have already borne child, the IUD (Intrauterine Device) is available. This involves placing a device in the uterus to prevent fertilization. i-Pill– Another contraceptive that has become very popular these days and is a cause of a lot of confusion and misuse is the i-pill or the post coital pill. The i-pill is only meant to be used as an “emergency” contraceptive. The pill can be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. The earlier it is taken, the more it is effective. It is 95% effective within 24hrs, 85% between 25-48hrs and 58% effective between 49-72hrs. It may cause nausea and vomiting in certain individuals and is hence advisable to be taken after meals. The i-pill has no effect once you are pregnant & cannot be replaced as a regular contraceptive. It is not to be used every time after intercourse. Over usage may lead to bleeding, pain & nausea. It is strongly recommended that before you chose to use any form of contraception you should consult with your doctor as this article can only give you a general overview and not advice which may be pertinent for certain cases. Be safe.

Steak out this place! Inam’s Steakhouse!

Good places to eat are hard to find. Literally! Inam’s Steakhouse is the perfect example. You can spot this place only if you’re looking for it, otherwise you’re likely to miss it. Inam’s Steakhouse is a must-visit for steak lovers & tenderloin junkies. This small cozy place is the brainchild of Celeb Chef Inam Khan, who used to run a popular joint in Boston. Although the place is not much to look at, but its food sure tempts you with its look & smells, satiates you with its texture & flavor & lets you know you are alive with its crunch & bursts of subtle spices & flavors.

54

Don’t expect plush interiors or typical steakhouse wooden booths. The place claims to serve only healthy cuisine which means that Chef Inam Khan prefers only herbs and spices which provide unique flavors. He strongly believes that his concoctions boost the entire system including blood circulation and kidney & liver functions.

The service is satisfactory though the knowledge of the staff on the dishes being served is at best limited. A place like this needs more seating. A mustvisit for the omnivores! - Sante

The piece de resistance at Inam’s is the Beef Tenderloin with sautéed vegetables. We recommend the meat platter – Beef Tenderloin, Lamb Chops, Chicken Breast seasoned with rosemary & oregano, Reshmi Kebabs, Afghani Chicken, Tandoori Chicken & Filet Mignon. Sumptuous indeed!

AISH

GOOD AS IT GETS!

Picture an authentic Hyderabadi restaurant. Bling it all up, and you have Aish! The Nizams of yore sure knew how to gastronomically pamper themselves, with the sumptuous Deccani cuisine & Aish aims to recreate the same magic in today’s times blending in both the old & the new! As you walk into this beautifully designed restaurant at the Park, you can’t help but imagine yourself in palace walking through time as the portraits of the Nawabi families look on. With the Swarovski chandelier and hangings overlooking, the Sherwani clad waiters guide you through their menu which is a eclectic blend of Hyderabadi & Andhra cuisine. The rubber tree produce Uudh ka Sharbat helps you wash down the layered Warqi Samosa, as the Khajoor-Paneer roll adds a hint of sweetness to the spice. Sweat through the spicy Nellore Chicken for a taste of Andhra, while learning about what the Begums wore to impress their husbands, with a piece of jewelry painted onto each of the plates. If you thought you had the best Hyderabadi Haleem, think again. Try the authentic haleem here, to get a true rendition of the dish. Team up your Pyaaz Ki Roti with a Safedh Murgh curry, and keep the traditional feeling going with a Sufiyani Pulao. And as the Double ka Meetha tries to space itself in your tummy, bid your waiter “Aadab”, & walk away with satisfied memories from an era long gone!

CHAI

GETS ME

HIGH!

Here in Hyderabad, It’s amazing how ‘taking a break’ is a much bigger deal than any other place. When people say – I’ll be back in ten minutes, it is like saying I will go read the newspaper, take a nap, ponder my existence for a couple of hours and of course, have two cups of chai along the way. Not only a work-break, no event or occurrence in Hyderabad is complete without the ubiquitous Irani Chai. Be it a Galli lo Lolli or Area mein Timepass, a small Daavat or a big Jashn, everything is either preceded or followed by a round of Irani Chai. For the typical Hyderabadi, his cup of chai is a daily indulgence, featuring the regular plate of Osmania or Chand biscuits, dipped and savoured slowly. For a fan base that encompasses all denominations, there are different types of Irani Chai – Pauna, Masala, Kashmiri, Golden Tea, Special Tea etc but there’s only one proper way to drink it – pour it into the saucer and slurp away to glory.

And for those five minutes, you can be sure that, it will be just you & your chai without a care for the rest of the world. What goes into one of these cuppas, you might ask? Well, here goes the list in no particular order of course. It’s tea steeped in milk, flavoured with some spices, sweetened and treated in a special way, a way that is kept a secret by most of these alchemists.

By the way, have you ever wondered what makes Irani Chai so addictive? Supposedly, one of the secret ingredients that goes into the making of Irani Chai is opium. So that’s probably why every Hyderabadi is so high on life! Even the inimitable MF Hussain used to get his inspirations from his daily cup of Chai at the Irani cafes he frequented while in the city. HYDERABAD LIFE, as the true Hyderabadi magazine, gives you the real dope on the Irani hotels that serve the best Chai the Twin Cities have to offer. Some of these places are little pockets of nostalgia dotting unlikely corners of the city, swathed in sepia, staring out as the world outside moves just a little faster every year. Slurp on!

feature story

The essence of sports is that nothing else matters! In that sense, you can call it religion! A sport adopts the basic form that a religion does, both physically and spiritually, in order to be considered a type of civil religion. Among the characteristics common to both religion and sports are ideas and images related to deity, faithful followers, and most importantly, belief. In addition, there are sacred spaces and ritual sites, historical texts, and well-worn traditions. In other words both sports and religious rituals establish a sense of order. It’s a confirmation that if nothing else, we have at least this to give us an identity, to provide solace when nothing else might. Billions would consider it blasphemous to proclaim, but sports – its characters blessed with these mythical abilities – are very much a religion. To rely on some supreme entity above to provide a beacon of guidance hardly seems much different than kneeling before a television set on a Saturday afternoon and relying on VVS Laxman to play a masterful innings to come back from an innings behind & win the series. We need our sporting gods to restore faith that the world as we know it is a benevolent place.

As a true Hyderabadi & staunch sports fanatic [not just restricted to cricket & world cup football], I cannot help but wonder in awe about the kind of sportsmen & women our city has produced. Although known for its laidback & ‘lite le lo’ nature, Hyderabad has produced & continues to produce some truly outstanding sportspersons, people who define talent, passion, commitment & hard work by defying odds to reach the pinnacle of greatness. Let’s take a look at the Top 10 Hyderabadi sportspersons who have brought laurels to the nation & made us all proud! - Nandan Yalamarti

MOHAMMED AZHARUDDIN “Azharuddin has the best wrists in the game, Tendulkar isn’t too far behind”. A man who scored three consecutive test centuries on debut – a record yet unbeaten, he is the best cricketer Hyderabad has ever produced. Azhar scored a total of 22 centuries in Test cricket at an average of 45, and 7 in ODIs at an average of 37. An excellent fielder, he took 156 catches in ODI cricket which was a world record until Mahela Jayawardene surpassed him. He held world records for maximum ODI runs and fastest ODI hundred. He also has probably unique record of scoring centuries in his first and last Test. So many records yet this man remains humble & his cheerful demeanor, exemplary captaincy remain an inspiration for all around him. Though the events that led to his retirement were unfortunate, Azhar remains every Hyderabadi’s favorite batsman & one of India’s best ever! He was for many years an inspirational figure in the Indian team with his athletic fielding and leadership. 58

SYED ABDUL RAHIM(1909-1963) He was India’s most successful and revered football coach. Back then, the city was famous for the legendary black and yellow shirted Hyderabad City Police known as the City Afghans. Under Rahim, the club won the Rovers cup for 5 consecutive years and the state league championships for 11 consecutive years. In 1950, 57 & 59, Hyderabad City Police participated in 12 national tournaments and won all of them.

A great Hyderabadi football legend

It was with the national team, however, that he gained most fame and assured his reputation as perhaps the greatest manager in the history of Indian football. One of the earliest and most notable of these came in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, when he guided his team to the semi finals. He was so ahead of his time that he employed the 4-2-4 system with the Indian team even before Brazil had popularized it in the 1958 World Cup. Rahim also guided India to success in the South-East Asian Quadrangular tournaments held in Colombo (1952), Rangoon (1953), Calcutta (1954) and Dacca (1955). His team also finished runners up in the Merdeka International Tournament, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1959. India remained unbeaten but came second on goal average. In the Asian games, his teams won gold medals in Delhi (1951) and Jakarta (1962). However, many people think his crowning moment was in 1962, when under his captaincy, India beat then world champion Italy 2-1 in a friendly match. Nobody in Indian football can even come close to his authoritarian greatness on the field! What India needs now is an athlete & coach of Rahim’s caliber!

VVS LAXMAN The Very Very Special player, also nicknamed as the Elegant One, Laxman is known for his “wristy, willowy & sinuous style”, one which is a “sight for the Gods” at its best! He is known for his superb timing & the ability to hit against the spin, reminiscent of his role model Azhar. Laxman is particularly noted for the skillful use of his supple wrists, which allow him to flick the ball to various places, but usually through the leg side. This also helps in his catching, and he in stationary catching positions, typically fields the slips cordon or in a bat pad position. He is known as a match-winner especially against Australia & is considered one of the most dangerous test players in the world.

SAINA NEHWAL

A girl who lets her game do all the talking, Saina isn’t as glamorous as her tennis namesake but she sure packs in more competitive punch than her. Let’s have a look at her credits. •The first Indian to reach Olympic Games quarterfinals •World’s Most Promising Player in 2008 •First Indian to win a BWF Super Series title – the Indonesia Open 2009 •First Indian Woman to reach semi finals of 2010 All-England Super Series •Won the Indian Open Grand Prix Gold 2010 •Won second Super Series title – Singapore Open 2010 •Defended her Indonesian Open title in 2010 •Career-high world ranking of No.2 •Awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna – the nation’s highest sporting award for players Saina has also successfully led the Indian Women Team to the Quarterfinals stage of the 2010 Uber Cup finals. Saina has been awarded with Padma Shri award in January 2010. She is indeed a source of joy & pride to every Hyderabadi & Indian.

ML JAISIMHA ML Jaisimha a right-handed batsman who was noted for his style on and off the field. He bowled medium pace, often opening the bowling for India, and off breaks and was a brilliant fielder. But it was the way he went about things that caught the eye. His slim figure, which he maintained till his last day, the boyish good looks, the inimitable gait, the trademark silk shirt and scarf, the sleeves buttoned at the wrist or the collar turned up - all these attracted immediate attention. He was called a ‘cultivated stylist’. He was the only player to bat on all 5 days of a Test Match. His peers like Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Ajit Wadekar have openly expressed his contributions to be invaluable. After leading Hyderabad for 16 seasons, he was made selector in 1977 & was made a life member of the MCC in 1978. He used to encourage fresh talent & cricketers everywhere looked up to him. 60

SYED MOHAMMED HADI (1899 –1971)

He was one of the most gifted pioneering athletes of India. He not only represented India in cricket and tennis, but was also proficient in field hockey, soccer, table tennis, chess, and polo. He was nicknamed “Rainbow Hadi” because of his expertise in these seven sports. Hadi learned horse riding and polo as a youth and played soccer for Nizam College. As a tennis player Hadi burst on to the international scene while studying at Cambridge University. He also earned university colors in field hockey, soccer, and table tennis. Denied the captaincy of the Cambridge team because he was an Indian, he vindicated his claim by representing India at the Davis Cup in 1924 and 1925. He also represented India at Wimbledon for five years and in 1926 reached the quarter finals in doubles. He was one of the first Indians to compete as a tennis player at the Olympics (1924 Summer Olympics). As a cricketer he played several first-class cricket matches in India, including an unofficial Test. When the Ranji Trophy was instituted in 1934, Hadi became the first batsman to score a century. Hadi was the founding member of the Hyderabad Football Association and the Hyderabad Cricket Association. After retiring from athletics, Hadi continued his involvement in sports as an educator. When the All-India Council of Sports was formed in 1959 he became its first secretary.

PULLELA GOPICHAND Pullela Gopichand won his first National Badminton Championship title in the year 1996, and retained it five times in a row, till the year 2000. Also, he won two Gold Medals and one Silver Medal at National Games 1998 held at Imphal. The same year, Gopichand led the State Badminton team of Andhra Pradesh to win the prestigious Rahmatulla Cup. He grabbed a SAARC Gold twice and at the Commonwealth Games, won a silver & a bronze for the country. On the international arena, he kept defeating an array of top-seeded players from all around the world. In the year 1999, he won the Toulouse Open Championship in France, and the Scottish Open Championship in Scotland. Continuing his smashing form, he emerged winner at the Asian Satellite tournament held at Hyderabad the same year, and lost in the Final match of the German Grand Prix Championship. He won the All England Open Badminton Championships in 2001 becoming only the second Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone, who won it in 1980. He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2001. But later on, his game was affected due to injuries and his ranking dropped to 126 in the year 2003. In 2005, he was awarded the Padma Shri Award. Now, he runs the Gopichand Badminton Academy. He is now a very renowned coach who received the Dronacharya Award and is the main force behind the emergence of Saina Nehwal. 61

WEEKEND TRAVEL

SRISAILAM

Only when a temple experience gets truly transcendental and spiritual, it is said that you reach your state of no return. Srisailam surely holds on to this pride. This famous temple town, nestled in the lush green forest of Nallamalai Hills, stands ‘undiscovered’ retaining much of its pristine and natural beauty. Getting there and being amidst the tranquil greenery is one unique and soulful experience a rare phenomenon for many temple locations in the present era.

This picturesque city is known for its highly revered shirne of Bhramaramba Mallikarjunaswamy, which is one of the twelve ‘Jyotirlingas’ of India. Situated on a small hill on the Southern banks of Krishna (known as ‘Pataalganga’ in this part), the existence of this temple makes Srisailam the most acclaimed sites of India. This temple, which has secured references in several mythological texts and scriptures, abounds in sculptural beauty and has 116 inscriptions in and around it. Sri Mallikarjuna Swami and his consort Bharamaramba, who are the incarnations of Lord Shiva and Parvati, are the presiding deities of the temple. History has it that this temple has had the glory of having Chalukyan kings, Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara, Chatrapati Shivaji, and Adi Shankaracharya as visitors. The origins of this magnificent temple have been lost in antiquity. However, the Skanda Purana, one of the major eighteen Puranas, is devoted mainly to the life and deed of Kartikeya, son 66

of Shiva and Parvati, has a chapter called Srisaila Kandam dedicated to the temple. According to the legends, ‘Vrishabha’, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva performed penance in this location, and Lord Shiva appeared before him, with his consort Parvati in the forms of Mallikarjuna and Bharamaramba. Other shrines within the temple include the Sahasra Linga, Panchapandava Temples, Ardhanareeswar, Vrudhamallikarjuna Swamy temple, Mallika Gundam, and Vata Vriksha. Srisailam celebrates Maha Shivaratri with utmost grandeur. This festival usually falls in the month of February and March and it is considered as the time to solemnly invoke Lord Shiva through fasts and chants. The temple witnesses lakhs of devotees who throng to worship the deity and have a holy dip in the river Krishna. Following this is the festival of Goddess Bhramaramba, which falls a month or two after Shivaratri. This festival too attracts a huge number of devotees.

Apart from being an important pilgrimage town, Srisailam is also a beautiful forest sanctuary, which makes it a wonderful destination for a refreshing weekend break all round the year. The forest of Srisailam, which is the hub of the largest tiger reserve in India, also shelters various fauna like the blackbuck, panthers, chinkara, pangolins, soft-shelled turtles.

Also make sure you book yourself a tirp for Project Tiger, which is a trek through the forests. You also might not want to miss the many waterfalls that you would see on your way to Srisailam, including Mallela Teertham.

On the whole, if you need to experience a soulful weekend, this is the place to go.

Style! Interview with Prachi Agarwal

Hyderabad Life brings to you one of the pacesetters of the city’s interior designing circuit. Prachi Agarwal, Interior Decorator & the Proprietor of the popular lifestyle & interior design store Tesori, takes us through how she began her career and what she feels is important in home design. 68

when incorporated in the right way will bring out the best results. At the same time, is very important to combine beauty with functionality. What are the key influences in your work today? It always starts with a concept. Keeping in mind the client’s personality, I work on a concept that sums up the individual’s lifestyle and also enhances it. Our aim is to provide everyone a better place to live and work in.

How long have you been practicing interior designing? I have been in this line from the last six years. What is it about interior designing that first fascinated you? I have always felt that your home reflects your personality. A passion for interiors, home life and international lifestyle is what attracted me towards this profession. I love transforming spaces. What have been the rewards of practicing interior designing? Seeing something bare transform into something so beautiful is a very good feeling. When working with a client, I enjoy the challenge of creating their unique look. To achieve this, I formulate a design concept to fit their personality and then work around it. Please tell us something about Tesori. Tesori is a brand dealing with home dĂŠcor accessories. Tesori was started with the idea that the right accessories in your personal space, be it your home or office, can certainly aid a wonderful living. Our philosophy is to encourage people to add something a little special to their personal space. It is a venture by KIPPL, a leading interior solutions company. It is a rapidly growing brand in the field of interior designing. What are the main determinants in the design process for you? Essential parts of all interior designs are the concept, color, proportion, balance and function of design. These 69

What has been your biggest challenge so far? Each project is a challenge for me. But designing my own retail store Tesori has been the biggest challenge so far. What does it take to succeed as an interior designer? Impeccable taste and excellent design sense to start with, alongside creativity and bright ideas. Then you need project management and problem-solving skills. You need people skills too, after all you work with a wide range of people from clients, to architect, to contractors to laborers. What is the current architectural/ interior decoration style that is making waves? The latest trend in interior designing is a definite shift from the Zen philosophy that ruled design trends in the past five years to contemporary opulence. Today, people love showcasing their new stature in society, and opulence and luxury are the key words in residential design. The classical styles have made a comeback with new contemporary modern overtones. The emphasis is on detailing and accessories play a very important role in completing the look. Chandeliers, artwork on the walls along with other embellishments are popular. What do you think will be the future trends in interior designing ten years from now? Design has a deeper meaning and responsibility than the superfluous trends that come and go. However, in the next ten years the most important thing in design or architecture will be green designs with sustainable materials.

Are there any changes you would like to see in the profession? Indian design needs to advance at a faster pace in order to constantly evolve in tune with global demands and expectations. All design decisions have social, environmental and ethical impacts. Therefore, designers and design students should work within an overall framework that takes a holistic approach to socially responsible design. How does our city affect your sensibility? Hyderabad is a rapidly growing city. It has come a long way from the city of Nizams to the modern cosmopolitan image it now reflects. In me, this city always invokes a perfect balance of old world charm and modern living. It is a true blend of tradition with modernity. What do you think are the most important determinants that have guided architectural development in Hyderabad? The IT boom ten years ago in Hyderabad played a very important role in shaping what the city has turned out today. Over the past few years we have seen some beautiful buildings spring up in the Hi-Tech City and Gachibowli area. There have been some very noteworthy residential developments as well. What we need now is a well-planned urban development spread across the entire city. The perfect Hyderabad space... For me, the place that most reflects the sensibilities of Hyderabad would be definitely the Charminar area. That is the real Hyderabad, just the way we all love it.

SOME HOME DECOR QUESTIONS TO HELP OUR READERS What are some of the common decorating mistakes made by homeowners? The most common decorating mistake made by homeowners is mixing of too many decorating styles and colors. Stick to one theme or you can choose a different style for each room. It’s also very important to purchase the right furniture and to place it in the right way. Do not clutter! Too much furniture or pieces that are too big or overpowering can make a room look or feel much smaller than it actually is. What would be your recommendation for “what to do first” in a decorating project? The first and foremost thing I do in a decorating project is to understand the client’s budget, personality and their lifestyle needs. Based on that, we arrive at a concept and choose a style that reflects who they are and how they want the world to perceive them. What advice do you have for someone with a new house to decorate and perhaps a limited budget? Home decorating on a limited budget can be challenging but also rewarding. First of all, choose a style that you like, from contemporary, to classical, to Victorian, etc. Then decide on a wall color to fit the look of each room. Buy some furniture. You would be surprised

70

at the vast range of furniture available these days to fit every pocket. Finally add the accessories – a nice lamp, few artworks for the walls, a rug in the living room and some small artefacts here and there.

that you never know if it will stand the test of time. The best thing to do is to stick with the classics and perhaps use the latest color and furniture trend in small doses.

Many people like the idea of updating their interiors for the seasons. What techniques do you recommend to transition a home from the summer to autumn/winter look?

Some people are baffled about where to place color. If their favorite color is blue for example, they don’t know if they should buy a blue sofa, paint the walls blue, or order blue carpeting. Your advice…

Everybody wants to do that today. Changing the décor of the home according to season helps to bring a fresh look. Basically it’s all about the play of colors and textures. Use darker colors in the winter on the walls, upholstery and drapes. You can use more of dark wood and leather in the winter. Get some antique pieces. You may go for dark color upholstery, curtains and accessories with textures, bold colors & eclectic embroideries. Use naturally-inspired colors like yellow, lavender, cobalt blue, green, beige, brown & deep red etc. The mood created will be cozy, warm & rustic. Most of us are always eager to know what the “latest” color, design, and furnishings trend is. Can you comment on what you see in trends and how homeowners might create interiors that are up-to-date but classic? Trends can be good in obtaining direction but the thing with “latest” is

Choosing colors is one of the most important elements in decorating. What is challenging is choosing a color scheme. You can go for a bold complementary color scheme or use a monochromatic scheme, i.e. use the same color in different shades. Warm colors like red, orange and yellow give a warm feel to the room whereas, blue, green and purple elicit a feeling of peace, tranquility and relaxation. Loving a color and living with it are two different things. You can use your favourite color in decorating but use it wisely and sparingly. Never use the same color on your walls, furniture and accessories. Create a perfect blend incorporating the right color scheme. Any other advice? Don’t be afraid to experiment. Just follow your instincts and enhance your personal space.

SPECIALFEATURE

TRAFFIC travails of a HYDERABADI Today, I learnt something very useful. And as a writer in the public domain, I consider it my sacred bounden duty to pass this gyaan onto you Agyaani Shishyas. Okay, I never took Sanskrit in school or college, but you get my drift. I learnt today that whatever they teach you at school applies only to the point of writing your exams. Once you are done with it, please take the unnecessary info off your head, because in the real world, all that is of no use. I learnt this lesson when I tried to cross the road to get from one end to another by foot in Banjara Hills. Here it goes: I was at the old Music World and wanted to get to the other side. So I used the principles of road safety that Mrs Sheila Panicker had instilled into me. Mrs Sheila Panicker was my teacher at kindergarten, & no, I don’t remember her real name. So I first looked left, to see if there was any vehicle coming, then I looked right, then I looked left again, and then right, then left and then right. I felt like one of those spectators at a tennis match except that there were no tennis 72

players involved in this scenario. Neither was a tennis court.

on the sadak ke us par in just 25 seconds.

At the risk of spondilitis, I kept looking and looking but the goddamned flow of gaadis just didn’t take the naam of stopping. 15 minutes, and yet I had not moved a single inch!

Me: How...how did he do that?

Then this gentleman wearing the gaudiest pants comes up and stands next to me. Let us call him Neo-Shankar (you will get the pun later). Now this dude, looking straight ahead, eyes focused on the other side of the road, just set out with his hand stretched indicating the traffic to stop. Even as I looked on, he threw all the values of road safety into the municipal bin with determination. My trepidation at what I thought was a suicide attempt, quickly turned into awe-filled admiration as vehicles stopped and he was

My Tanhaiyee: He is the one!! Whoever has watched the Matrix Trilogy will concur with me here. Neo stopped these 20 mm bullets coming at him and the world went – “Wow neat!” And Our Neo-Shankar stopped 120 heavy vehicles in Hyderabad. You should have been there to see it for yourself. Mind-boggling! And thus, I achieved road-gyaana, just like how Lord Buddha achieved Bodh-gyaana. Believe it or not, I managed to do the same feat in 2 minutes. With a little practice, I shall master the art. But one word of advice, do not trust these bus drivers.

So what is the moral of the story, you might ask? Don’t look before you leap, I say! People from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru may live life in the fast lane. But we Hyderabadis live in oncoming traffic. And remember, just like Morpheus asks Neo, you have to ask yourself… do you think that’s air you’re breathing?

horoscope Libra

24 Sept – 23 Oct This month, you will know where you are in life exactly. Congratulations in advance on that new GPS device you are going to buy. Use it wisely. You will be invited to some parties, while you will gatecrash a few others. But it is important that you don’t lose hope and your fashion sense. Hang in there, Libran!

Scorpio 24Oct – 22 Nov The stars indicate that this is the right time for you to start learning a new language. Or you can join a Spoken English course. You will start conversing in your new-found tongue and confuse your family members. This will also score you some brownie points with your date as you pretend to be a smart person. Sting on, Scorpio!

Sagittarius 23 Nov – 21 Dec This is an exciting month with new opportunities for you. Animal lovers will bring a new pet home. If it is an endangered species, the government will kick you hard on your derriere. You will have trouble remembering anniversaries. Don’t stay home & watch the Commonwealth Games. Go out & enjoy!

Capricorn 22 Dec – 20 Jan As usual, you will be lazy this month as well. You will have a relationship with the spider that has hatched its young in your right ear. Think twice about things that you intend to do, they are going to confuse you as hell. Money will not be a constraint, so you can stop being a miser and take that not-so-well-deserved break.

Aquarius

21 Jan – 19 Feb Aquarian, the time is ripe for you to learn Karate, especially since you want to use it so badly on your co-workers. You will trip and fall around a lot. Be nice to people who help you, but you can’t help it if they steal your money and disappear. You will be second place in some races. This is because you learnt Karate instead of practicing for the race.

Pisces 20 Feb – 20 Mar You will feel the need for change this month. So start by changing your screensaver, your bed-sheet & most importantly your hairdo. Take a short vacation. But you may feel restless because of an upset stomach. So careful with that! Money matters, so don’t buy stupid stuff and do something creative with your life. Go crazy with your new hairdo.

Aries 21 Mar – 20 Apr The planets indicate that this is a month of major changes in all aspects of your life. Join a gym. You need to think big and act bold. Now’s the right time for you to go buy yourself some pink underwear! Don’t take love for granted. So don’t be a cheapskate and go out on a nice expensive date with your loved ones.

Taurus 21 Apr – 21 May This month, there may be a gap between your understanding of a situation and the receipt, which provides those things. You may show extraordinary dumbness. So whatever you buy, check the bills carefully. Also, remember to pay your phone & internet bill. Confident times ahead, but remember, sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Gemini 22 May – 21 Jun October is all about inner harmony for you. You will let your guard down emotionally and let your loved ones see your crybaby avatar. You will buy new tube lights for your home. You are thinking of other financial investments because the market is looking up but the stars advise you to not act stupid.

Cancer 22 Jun – 22 Jul You will travel a lot and since you don’t ask for directions, you will get lost a lot as well. You will fake illnesses and skip school/college/office. Someone close to you thinks you act over-smart. You are jealous of someone’s success and will try to secretly practice voodoo on them.

Leo 23 Jul – 22 Aug You are one lucky fella this month, Leo. Rake in the moolah, but beware, lions have dogs for company who will try to steal your bone. This will be a frustrating month for you as your favorite TV show bahu is going to be extra-tormented by her saas. But you be a real Leo – quit whining & hunt big!

Virgo 23 Aug – 23 Sept This will be the best month of 2010 for you. So bet on the lottery, get the stakes high ‘cause you will get lucky. Also quit fooling around in life and get a grip on things because the hard work begins now. Now that you’re rich, you’ll make new friends. It’s high time you clean up your messy home for your new visitors.

Prologue Once upon a time, two dudes stood on a mound at Durgam Cheruvu to pee. As their respective pees gushed out, they savored the simple joy of a Pee Brr – that wonderful onesecond shiver that comes and goes without warning. Long after they were done saying hello to nature, they stood there marveling at the Pee Sprinkle patterns that formed on their shoes till, like all things wonderful, the pattern disappeared and they returned but not without having an ‘animated’ conversation. Their empty bladders, blissful souls, invigorated bodies & hazy minds led to the opening line – “This sounds like the beginning of a comic strip!”

INTRODUCING OUR CHARACTERS…

Shareef Miyan

Narsing Anna

He started out without any worldly advantages in life, and had come up the hard way. Born to a rickshaw puller in Chintalbasti, he worked his way up the ladder of the hospitality industry – selling palli-bataani, onto chaat bandis, tea stalls, Irani hotels to when finally, by what only seemed to be the Grace of God, he landed a plush job in the climate-controlled environs of a coffee shop. Till one day, all his dreams came crashing down in a classic case of Hyderabadi Tourette’s…

As he stood at the bus-stop in Koti watching her walk away with another guy, a single tear fell from his cheek onto the footpath, then slid onto the side of the road, and into the drainage pipe, there to join its course into the not-so-mighty-anymore waters of the river Musi, and eventually the Hussainsagar, where that solitary tear splattered into her eyes, as the other guy playfully splashed water on her, as they were boating on the Khairunnisa. Within 10 days, the girl was rendered blind.

SM: Saar, order? Customer: Yeah, one café Latte! SM: Hou Laatu saar, kaunsa hona?

Morals of the story #1: Never scorn Narsing Anna’s love #2: Never go boating in Hussainsagar
