36th IAHR WORLD CONGRESS 28 June – 3 July, 2015 Delft – The Hague, the Netherlands
DELTAS OF THE FUTURE (and what happens upstream) Second Announcement http://iahr2015.info
INVITATION On behalf of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) and the Local Organizing Committee we cordially invite you to attend the 36th IAHR World Congress, which will be held at the World Forum in The Hague from 28 June to 3 July, 2015. Roger Falconer IAHR President
Arthur Mynett LOC Chair
The Hague is located near the coast in the Western part of the Netherlands, with easy connections to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of the busiest airports in Europe. In early summer, the weather is generally pleasant and warm. The historic city of The Hague is home to the Dutch Parliament, and the International Court of Justice, which provide an ideal ambiance for issues related to water governance and water conflict resolution. The city of Delft, only 10 km away, holds a number of leading technological institutes focusing on education, research and capacity development in various fields of water and environment. During the week prior to the IAHR World Congress, several short courses and master classes will be given at Delft University of Technology, UNESCO-IHE and Deltares. The Hague is 20 km from the Port of Rotterdam, which is the busiest port in Europe and the world’s fifth largest.

Being located in the delta of the RhineMeuse river system, the Netherlands has been dealing with issues related to flooding, land reclamation, and sustainable development for centuries already. It is well-known for its high safety level coastal protection works constructed over the past decades. But it is also preparing for dealing with future effects of population growth and climate change, by developing new concepts like the Room for the River and Building with Nature programmes. The 36th IAHR World Congress will provide special emphasis on cross-cutting themes related to Deltas of the Future, looking at what happens upstream, linking hydroenvironment research to engineering practice, and reaching out to the developing world. We look forward to welcoming you at IAHR 2015!
The Congress will cover a wide range of fields related to hydro-environmental science and engineering. Special emphasis will be on practical implications of delta technology
and sustainable delta development, which can only be reached by considering what happens upstream.
Congress themes and subthemes 1. Managing deltas a) wetland protection and shore restoration b) impacts of urbanization and land reclamation c) saline and freshwater interaction d) flood risk and adaptation measures
5. Fluvial and maritime hydraulics a) long and short wave propagation b) hydraulic facilities and instrumentation c) physical modelling d) interaction surface and subsurface flows
2. Hydro-environment a) eco-hydraulics and eco-hydrology b) rehabilitation of water systems c) impacts of pollutants on the water environment c) environmental flows and dam operations
6. Water resources and hydroinformatics a) catchment hydrology b) water-food-energy nexus c) computational methods d) management support systems and serious gaming
3. Sediment management and morphodynamics a) sediment transport b) basin-wide sediment management c) morphodynamics of estuaries and coastal areas d) river morphodynamics
7. Extreme events, natural variability and climate change a) hydrological extremes: floods and droughts b) flood resilient cities and infrastructures c) interaction society and water systems d) learning from disasters
4. Water engineering a) river and coastal engineering b) hydraulic structures c) hydraulic machinery and conduits d) renewable energy resources
