Founder’s Note “Rowing is more than just the most efficient exercise you can do; when you’re rowing with other people you have to show up and give it your all, right with your crew. It’s shared fun, accountability, experience, and connection.” – Bruce Smith My name is Bruce Smith and I am the founder of Hydrow, where our goal is to help humans feel healthier, more connected and less alienated through the shared experience of rowing. When we untether ourselves from our computers or televisions and actually do something with someone else, we build genuine, connected relationships through that shared experience. We believe that’s how we can help build a world with better health and more people who feel like they matter to each other. I am a lifelong rower and entrepreneur, committed to finding innovative ways to help people live healthier lives and feel more connected to their communities. My years as a rower, coach, and Executive Director of Boston’s Community Rowing are the foundation of my belief in the power of shared movement and experience. This issue is focused on goals. At our winter training facility in Miami Beach, each of our Hydrow trainers are working towards individual goals, while simultaneously helping us to achieve our shared goal of creating a sense of connectedness and belonging for everyone with Hydrow. I hope you enjoy reading their stories, and feel inspired to go after your own goals, whatever they may be. See you on the water,
Bruce Smith

Dani As lead trainer at Hydrow, Dani knows all about setting and keeping goals. “It’s important that I remain focused and don’t forget why I’m on the water in the first place. I take my practices seriously, but I still have fun.” Her balanced goal-setting has helped her become a world-class athlete and accomplished Paralympian. She is currently training for the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Austria and the 2020 Paralympics. Dani recently trained at the Olympic training center in Chula Vista, CA, where she was able to reconnect with her Paralympic team mates and be hyperfocused on her stroke. “It was fantastic having a chance to drill down into the technical aspects of rowing. I was really able to see how far I’ve come. The single boat training I do with Hydrow and the support I get from my Hydrow has helped me become stronger Pictured leftcrew to right: Nick, James, Dani, aAdam, Christine (not pictured: Sera) rower, no matter what boat I’m in.”
Explore with us “The views were amazing.” — Robyn C. Our Hydrow trainers are lucky to row in unbelievable places year-round, allowing our rowers to travel along with us. In the winter months we operate out of the historic Miami Beach Rowing Club which has world-class programming for people of all ages. It’s located on Indian Creek, a beautiful, protected three-mile waterway that runs through the heart of Miami Beach. We see manatees, dolphins, and other tropical wildlife as we train and film episodes for Hydrow users. It’s a nice break from the cold Boston weather and keeps us working, laughing, and growing together as a team.

Our trainer team Hard work is necessary to achieve your goals, but sometimes you just have to kick back, have fun, and enjoy the company of your friends and crew. Our Hydrow trainers fully enjoy Miami Beach in their down time, whether it’s a potluck at the production crew’s house or an impromptu game of volleyball on the beach. Hydrow trainer James knows that fun is a vital part of any goal. “When you make room for adventures that challenge you physically, it’s easier to let go of those fears and hesitations that sometimes creep in while chasing a larger goal. If you’re having fun with your team, you’ll work harder, get fitter and achieve more.”

Nick Nick knows that determination, goals, and support make all the difference. Soon after joining Hydrow as a trainer, Nick found himself facing mortality, open heart surgery, and new goals around recovery and healing. When Nick woke up from the five-hour procedure he faced a challenging recovery. “I hurt and couldn’t do everyday things. My goals had always been about being a better athlete and competing in major events. Now they were about getting out of bed.” His first goal was to walk five minutes a day. From there he worked his way back to doing three push ups and one pull up. To get back into a boat, Nick had to be able to sit and slide on a rowing machine without using the handle. “It was a whole new way to think about my body. I had to learn to move over again. ”Several months later Nick is recovering well; his heart is healthy and he’s back in training. “My goal now is progress. My speed is coming along and I’m building endurance and strength. This experience has made me a better trainer and athlete. I’m more appreciative of where I am, and more appreciative of what it takes for anyone to get healthier and overcome whatever setbacks they might encounter. I couldn’t have done it without the Hydrow community.”
Benefits of Hydrow Rowing is unique among sports and fitness activities. Not only does it use 86% of the muscles in your body and get your heart pumping like nothing else, rowing may be the only low-impact exercise that decreases your risk of osteoporosis. Scientists and exercise physiologists have long understood that low-impact activities like cycling and swimming are great for cardio fitness, but don’t have the bone-strengthening benefits of higherimpact exercise such as running and weightlifting.
Recent research has shown that rowing is as effective at osteoporosis prevention as higherimpact exercises. Because so many muscles are worked hard while rowing, your bones get the benefits of running or weight lifting without the risks of high-impact movement. The Hydrow Live Outdoor Reality rower gives you a fun, effective way to feel better and live healthier for longer.

The power of community “An awesome experience.” — Anton K.
Research has shown time and time again that people are happier and healthier when they are connected to others. At Hydrow, we are committed to building a community that helps people live healthier lives — physically and mentally. Rowing isn’t just an effective workout that engages up to 86% of your muscles. It requires everyone in a boat to find the same rhythm and move in synchronicity with their crew.

Your presence matters because your team is relying on you, rooting for you, and working right alongside you. Hydrow allows users to experience that same sense of camaraderie and teamwork, wherever they are. Rowing is part of the rhythm of our daily lives. Our community and personal goals are propelled by that rhythm. Whether your choose to row by yourself or in a team boat, or whether your goals are competitive or personal, Hydrow is moving with you every stroke of the way.
Grace Learning from experience is key when training, setting goals, and moving forward. Grace competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, rowing in a pair. While she rowed well, a setback prevented the boat from medaling. Many people might feel as if they failed their goals but Grace knew it was something else. “The power of being a part of something bigger than myself and representing the United States of America was incredible. On the world stage, donning the red, white and blue was an honor. From daily training to the medals stand. Tokyo in 2020 is in my sights.” Grace’s training plan for 2020 is similar to the one that got her to Rio, and takes new lessons into account. “I still love the sport, the feeling of being on the water. Pursuing being the fastest in the world is still the goal. Behind every Olympian there are thousands of hours of hard training, relentless mental focus, getting up at o’dark thirty and most importantly a huge team behind the individual. Goals don’t get accomplished without a team and my Hydrow crew is my team supporting me and having fun along the way.”
Christine When Christine sets a goal, there’s virtually nothing that anyone can do to stop her from achieving it. And while she has her sights set on the 2020 Olympics, there’s another goal Christine is working towards with the same level of tenacity: making an impact on the global water crisis. Before joining the team, Christine studied environmental communication and focused on water scarcity — an area she’s been passionate about her entire life. As Hydrow’s Trainer Ambassador for water.org, Christine works to bolster awareness about water.org’s mission, and encourages members of the Hydrow community to join her in affecting change. “I know how fortunate I am to have clean water to row on and to drink. Not everyone has that, and it should be a fundamental human right,” says Christine. “At Hydrow I can train and focus on my athletic goals, while simultaneously working to help people around the world gain access to safe, clean drinking water.”
“Water.org is an extraordinary initiative that makes a real difference in people’s lives. Water scarcity is a global issue — we’re doing our part to help solve the problem by giving people the tools they need to improve their lives. Every donation, every 60 days rowed, makes more of a difference than you can imagine.” Christine, Hydrow trainer and water.org ambassador Think of all the ways water impacts your life. Drinking. Bathing. Sanitation. Rowing. Can you even picture what life would look like without access to clean water? There are 844 million people globally who are living without access to safe water. As an organization that strives to bring the water to our users, we believe that we have an equal responsibility to help bring safe, clean water to those communities that need it most. Your effort drives us to tranform lives worldwide. Once you’ve logged 60 days rowed, Hydrow will donate to water.org to help achieve their mission of providing access to safe water and sanitation for someone in need in the developing world.

Clean water is a basic requirement for life, but it’s not guaranteed.
1 in 9 people worldwide lack access to water
1 in 3 don’t have access to a toilet
One-third of all schools in the world lack access to basic water and sanitation
Every 2 minutes a child dies because of water or sanitation-related disease like dysentery
As part of the Hydrow community, you can make a difference.

Sera Sera translates the same drive and intensity that made her a world-class rock climber on to the water, including her approach to setting and working towards her goals — especially the biggest ones. Right now, Sera is pursuing her goal of making the U.S. Olympic rowing team for the 2024 Games in Paris. “Working with Christine as she trains for the 2020 Olympics has given me incredible perspective in terms of how I tackle the ‘big picture.’ If I only looked at the ultimate end goal, it would feel impossible. I take goals like Paris, or getting into medical school, and I break them down by year, then month, then week, then day. On the water, I focus on what I need to achieve that day, and I go for it.”
Training our trainers Hydrow trainers are athletes working toward their own competitive goals, so they need training too. Peter Donohoe is one of our trainers’ trainers. Peter is a world champion Olympic bobsled racer who competed for Ireland in 1996 and 2002. “I started out in track and field, qualified for the ‘92 Irish team in hurdles but I got injured. It turns out a lot of bobsledders come from the track and field world, as they’re big people who can sprint. Bobsledding was a great fit because you have to keep your brain quiet as you focus on hurtling down the ice. It worked my mind and body every day.” After the Olympics, Peter continued to feed his passion for teaching, athletics, and community by coaching elite athletes in strength, mobility, conditioning, and function. He works with the Boston Ballet, teaching aspiring dancers how to use their bodies efficiently and effectively. He now works as a strength and conditioning specialist, and a functional training coach with a wide range of elite athletes, teaching them how to work at their peak without putting their bodies at risk. “I love being part of the Hydrow community. Rowing connects the body and the boat to produce velocity. It takes precision and force used together. At Hydrow, I feel like I’m back in the Olympic arena where I’m helping my team achieve the next goal, and learn from the next thing that happens. I get to see our athletes become the best versions of themselves, whether they are competing on the water or leading rowers on the Hydrow screen.”

James “It’s all about evolving. My goals reflect that.” James is Hydrow’s soul surfer, and is as passionate about rowing as he is about everything in his life. Goal setting and being part of a team are both integral parts of his process, whether it’s on the water or in another adventure. “I need to be there for my crew just like they are there for me. We operate as a team in every sense of the word. We keep each other consistent, help each other grow, and have a lot of fun. Right now? I’m getting ready for Wyoming.” In a few months, James will tackle the Picnic, a triathlon set in Wyoming’s Grand Teton montains. In reality, the Picnic is anything but what its name suggests; it’s a grueling course that demands physical strength, determination and pure grit to complete. James’ Olympic-level rowing has helped him build up his strength and endurance as he prepares for this new adventure. “I’ve always loved jumping into new events outside of rowing where I have to focus on perseverance, using that same mental toughness from rowing in another way,” says James. “It’s going to be visually stimulating, exciting and a little scary. But that sense of accomplishment that I’ll feel when I cross the finish line will be super rewarding.” Our Hydrow team is so proud of James, and can’t wait to cheer him on.
