Teen’s Illustrated Guide to

SURVIVAL

the Kitchen Becoming a MASTER CHEF

Working in the kitchen can be SUPER MESSY, that’s why it’s important to wear your aprons. Don’t EVER EVER EVER leave EMPTY pots on burners.

Clean up any spills immediately and keep appliances away from water or any wet liquid.

Beautiful hair? Don’t want to tie it up? Well... TOO BAD. Tie back long hair before cooking.

Nobody wants to get cuts, so make sure to use a cutting board to chop foods.

SAFTEY COMES FIRST! Make sure to turn off appliances first THEN pull out the plug. Note: Pull on the plug not the cord.

Dirty hands…ewwww. Make sure to wash hands with warm soapy water for 15 seconds before handling foods.

Use measuring spoons for liquid, solid and dry ingredients. Measuring spoons are used for ingredients that are less than ¼ c or 60 mL.

How do you measure dry ‘stuff’? Well, to measure dry ingredients use a DRY measuring cup.

Don’t want to spill liquids? When measuring liquid ingredients, use a liquid measuring cup.

Ever heard of water displacement from science class? Did you know that you can use this method to measure fats? Well you can.

Did you know that heaping is another method used to measure solid and dry ingredients? Bet you didn’t.

Make SURE to level off when measuring dry or solid ingredients.

Dirty sinks are gross so make sure to clean sink and taps by wiping then drying them with a cloth.

Dishwashing? Fill one sink with soapy water, use one squirt of soap only.

When dishing washing; use one sink (soapy) for washing dishes and the other (clear water) for rinsing.

Nobody wants to wash dishes with leftover food on them. So remember to scrape dishes into the garbage.

Place a drainboard on the side of your sink. Have the spout on the edge.

Dirty pots and pans NEED to be soaked.

Place dishcloths and tea towels in the laundry basket when you are done using them. Don’t leave them lying around because they’ll be lonely.

How to measure: Dry/Solid Ingredients: Use dry measuring cup. (Note: When using dry measuring cups, you must fill up your cup to the top.) There are two ways to measure dry/solid ingredients: First way is called level. This is when you level off the top of the cup or measuring spoons using a straight edge. Second way is called heaping. This is when you fill the cup so it is lightly overflowing. (Note: If the recipe does NOT tell you to heap of level off. Then you must level off.)

Liquid Ingredients: Use a liquid measuring cup. To measure a liquid properly, place it on a flat surface and slowly pour liquid in. Then lean down to look at the cup at eye level. Leaning down can give you inaccurate measurements or you must look up. Small Amounts: Use measuring spoons. They come in various sizes and can be used to measure liquid, solid and dry ingredients in small amounts. (1/4 c/ 60 mL)

often have to set goals for ourselves, organize our time, and at the same time find a way to enjoy our teen years; learning from experiences and preparing for our future careers. We have to focus on learning and getting into good studying habits so we can bring home fantastic grades!” “Every parent has set goals when they were teens, so did my father. My father’s main goal was to get good grades so he could get into a professional university. Some other goals he had were: Getting a part-time job so he could support his family and receive the national athletic goal. So many goals! Your wondering how he achieved them all, well here it is. In order to achieve your goal, you need to set up a plan in other words organize your goal. My father made a list of the things he had to get done first and the things he had to get done last, in order to achieve the goal he set for himself. My father used his agenda and his journal. He also looked at priority which is very important for teens. Shopping with your friends is not top priority, getting homework that's due the next day, is.” “Everyone has that one goal that they didn’t accomplish. My father had one too. My father wanted to get good grades and pass the

could become a doctor, this was this goal. Why did he not accomplish it? His grades dropped because an obstacle came in his way. In grade twelve my father wanted to receive the national athletics award for the fourth time! In order to do so he had to sign up for every team. Every day my dad would have practices. This left him with no time to for his medical course. His grades dropped significantly and unfortunately he did not meet his goal of passing the course. Nothing is impossible to achieve. I believe if my father planned out his goal properly and used his time effectively he could have achieved his goal. To set up a proper goal he could have done these few things. Firstly he should have planned his goal off by, what is his goal? His goal was to pass the medical course with high grades (90 and above) so he could reach his next goal of becoming a doctor. Next, my fathers needs to know, how he will know when he gets there? He will reach the goal when the grades are announced and he has passed the course. My father also needs to know if his goal is achievable. My father knew he could pass this course because he had passed the grade eleven medical course. My father has done it before and he knows he can do it again. Now my father needs a strategy just like any other goal setter would have. If my father wants to pass the course he needs to do his homework daily and get excellent grade on his tests. He also need to make notes of what he learns so he can apply the notes to his tests. Finally my father needs to know how much time he has to accomplish his goal, my father has one year. The goal is now planned out but a good goal setter must think about his obstacles too. The biggest obstacle my track of my goals I need to record my marks from each class, each test, quiz, protect ect. If I notice that my average is over eighty percent I know I’m on the track to success. How will I know I achieved my goal/ how do I know I can achieve it? I know I can achieve my goal because I have gotten the honours before in grade seven and eight. What is my strategy? My strategy to attain my goal is to complete all my homework, study three-four days before a test or quiz

father encountered was his sports team practices. My father was on most of the teams in his school and didn't have time to do his homework. To solve this my father could have used his agenda to plan/make a list and, this is where using your time effectively comes in to play. My father was letting his urgency; sport team practices, take over the things that were mandatory; his medical course that would cost him if he did not pass. In order to solve this problem my father could make a list of priorities. He could have also divided his day into little hour chunks and plan what he is going to do within each chunk and how much time he will spend on each activity. This how my father could have set up his goal and by doing this he could have achieved what he wanted, this certainly would have worked. This is what clever goal setters would do.” “The advice of a lifetime! Most people say that the best advice you get is from your parents. My father was a teen once too and he went through the same experiences we go through. So he knows more than us and his wisdom is greater than ours. I decided to ask my father for advice, what should I focus on more/most as a teen? And my father said to get into good studying habits so I can get good grades and receive award like the honours. He also said to make notes in class. My father said to me that at this age studying is most important, this is when you choose where you want to go in life. I decided to listen to the advice given and set my own goal which is to receive the honour roll this semester. But I can’t leave my goal like this, it must be properly laid out. Firstly I start of with stating what my goal is: My goal is to achieve the honour roll this semester which means I need to get a total average of eighty percent. How will I know when I reach my goal? In order to keep and to review my notes each night. These things will help me to get good grade which will lead me to receiving the honours. Lastly a good goal planner needs to know how much time they have to achieve the goal. I have two months to get really good grades before the repot cards begin to get processed. This is what a clever goal setter would do with the advice given by their parent/guardian. Advice is key for teens and everyone should take advantage of it.

Teens need goals! Learn to set your own!

Me in my grad dress my goal was to look the best!

Here, I was at a aquatic sight to learn about water. I developed a new interest I might want to be a “Hydrologist”!

“Smart people avoid obstacles! To set a proper goal I need to thing about obstacles: things that might come in the way of me receiving the honour roll. The biggest obstacles that I will encounter are: procrastinating, socialization (friends) and media (television and internet). How am I going to avoid or get around these interferences? I need a strategy. To prevent myself from procrastinating I need to make a chart or a plan of the things I need to do first and last. A plan usually helps to organize yourself. In order for me to write notes in class: which will help me to get good grades on tests then eventually help me to get the honours, I need to prevent myself from socializing with other people or friends. To do this my strategy is to sit somewhere far from my friends probably on the other side of class so I can concentrate more. For my last obstacle which is media” TV, internet ect. I can finish the work I have first then spend my remaining time (free time) on the computer or the TV. If I need a quiet environment ( distraction-free ), I can always use the public library or my bedroom if I don't have any media there. To encourage my goal I need little goals, like staircases that will lead me to my goal. My three little goals are: Finishing my homework on time because homework plays a huge role in understanding what you have learned. My second goal is to write good notes in every class, this little goal will me improve my knowledge skills so I am able to apply it onto my tests and in real life. My third goal that will enable me to receive my bog goal

"Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it." - Michael Jordan

is to review my notes and paper work each night. These goals will help me to get to my big goal, it’s like following a path tat leads you to your destination. To obtain the honour roll this semester I need to think about how I’m going to arrange my time so I can use it wisely. Firstly, if I want to finish my homework and study three-four days before a test or quiz the only thing that can come in between this is me procrastinating, if I divide my time into little chunks and make a list of the things I have to do (first and last) I can over come this problem. This is called managing your time and using it effectively. “Setting goals helps to create your future. Goal don’t only help with your day-to-day assignments, they also help you to mature, understand who you are, and where your going. My goal: To receive the honour roll this semester; helps me to pin out my strengths and weaknesses and my goal also helps me to become more independent and mature because I am trying to achieve something all by myself with my own hard work. While trying to achieve the honour roll I can see which subjects I am getting the highest grades in and from there I can begin to determine my interests and skills. My goal also helps me to gain intelligence mentally and psychologically. How? Well, you receive the honour roll because you have demonstrated high skills/ first class standards in your academics. In other words you receive the award for your high grades and demonstration of intelligence. To get the honours you have to study hard, this is why getting the honours fits under intellectual progress/development. This goal is also useful because I can use it again in the future to receive the honours again or some other rewards like the prin-

ciples award though I may have to tweak my goal a bit . As you can see goal setting is very useful, my goal compared to my fathers was very different. When my father was my age he didn’t know how to set ’proper’ goals, he never learned how to do it, he did not know the criteria a goal required. My goal setting skills are very different from his, a goal is not just something you have to plan to do, you must evaluate your goal, you need to be specific; Is you goal measurable/ how do you know when you get to your goal, is your goal achievable? What is your strategy to achieve your goal? And how much time do you have to reach your goal? By following this you will be successful in achieving both your long term and short term goals. As a teen it is important to set goals and work on achieving them it is also important that you learn how to use your time effectively. Teens must also look at the things they must do before they turn into an adult, for example teens must learn to make mature relationships and choices and teens must also prepare for their life long careers. Remember your only a teen ONCE!

My parents; they’ve always been there for me as a teen!

Dealing with Communication malfunction "Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership.”— Gilbert Amelio

As a teen knowing how to communicate is important. People know how to communicate but not effectively. What is effective communication? Effective communication occurs with two people; the sender and the receiver. The receiver interprets the information given by the sender the way it was intended. But why is effective communication important? Knowing how to communicate IS a n important skill for teens to have for many reasons. Effective communication helps to stop roadblocks, create bridges that guide you to becoming a better listener, and teaches you to be assertive. In my comic there is a girl named Melissa who is having difficulties communicating.

She could not complete her part of a assignment and her friend is very angry at her. Melissa wants to explain the reason why she was not able to complete it but Shea her partner/ friend will not let her. A classmate of Melissa’s decides to help solve the communication malfunction.

be partners. This is where the conflict begins. When Shea talks to Melissa she doesn’t know that she is actually insulting her. While talking to Melissa Shea puts up roadblocks. Shea shames her, she uses ridiculing, threatening and globalizing in her speech. These are all examples of NEGATIVE communication In the beginning of the comic a girl named Melissa is strategies also known as running to her friend Shea, ROADBLOCKS. Road blocks put up barriers to communot knowing that she is gonication. They change the ining to be humiliated. Special points of interest: Effective communication is an important aspect Listening is important while communicating. Passive and active listening are two ways to stay involved in conversations Roadblocks stop effective communication Use I-messages for positive communication

“I understand how you feel I can imagine it, I think you should talk to her, tell her the truth.” A fellow classmate of Melissa's found her in the cafeteria looking upset. He asked her what was wrong, when she finally tells him, he says he knows exactly how she feels though he has never been in her place. This is called empathy, another important part of effective communication. While they were talking, they also listen to each other both passively and actively. This is known as effective listening. Passive listening is when

Ethan recommended to Melissa that she could talk to Shea using an I-message. An i-message is when the speaker (sender) starts his/her statement with “I”. I-messages have lots of advantages and there are usually four parts to an I -message. I feel. When you. Because I. And I want. Using these all together you can create a positive avenue for communicating.

After Ethan’s words, Melissa decided to talk to Shea. While talking to Shea, Melissa uses I-messages. She explain everything. “Shea I felt annoyed when you didn't let me explain why I hadn't completed my homework. Because afterwards I felt guilty and interrupted. I want you to listen to me next time, as in right now.” Using I-messages you can prevent roadblocks or clear any that are in the way.
