Introduction

Interning with JGospel has been one of the best opportunities I’ve had. The experience here has helped me grow not only as an individual, but also as a professional. The graphic design work experience has helped me developed numerous of useful skills such as logotype, newsletter, print communication, UI, marketing material, page layout design and websites. JGospel, a non-profit organization is located in the heart of New York City. It offers services in Web, App, Art, and Motion. They have dedicated professional designers and illustrators approaching for many differentstyles, from modern vector art to traditional paintings. In addition, they also use software suchas Adobe After Effects and Final Cut Pro to create and edit videos to promote or showcase

clients ’ business or organization. Internal communication between the team members is constant. For example, when we receive a complex project from a business, we usually start brainstorming and developing ideas together. By communicating with the clients to confirm certain direction, then we can divide the work. Meetings are important because it allows to us to expand choices and express opinions, as well as having everyone on the same page. I have been professional working with Adobe suite, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. I also adopted the hobbit of sketching out ideas. It is a very good way to begin the creative process without being constrained by a computer interface.

POSTER There are many types of poster, whether creating a collector’s series or doing client work; we first need to deliver information at the same time appearing to the viewers. All the posters I designed have a focus point and consistent with details. It is very important to balance the composition as well as mix up typography. The hardest part is to form my own ideas on the subject. It takes time to research and decide what type of patterns, typography, and layout to use.

Grid plays an important role in all the designs. There are two main types of layouts, vertical or landscape. As I create this portfolio using InDesign, there involves the binding in order to compensate for the gutter. The gutter space is use to assist the binding in publications. I used grid in this portfolio design because it helps to repeat the look consistently. With the visual harmony, everything flows together, which creates a stronger foundation.

Great design summarized ideas in a way that is also pleasing to the eye. It allows me to make a positive first impression on the viewers. When I combine the right image, typography and layout, the message can be delivered effectively.

ILLUSTRATOR For this part of the design, I focused more on the technical use of the illustrator. It is a very good tool to use when making vector graphics that allow me to edit and print in high quality even when I create designs with small sizes file. I use this tool to freely express ideas. Both the image Candy and A Serie of Abstract Shape are rework of my original sketches. Objects and drawing could also be done realistically, by using the gradient tool. In order to make my graphics even better, tablet is the best tool to have control over the lines that mouse cannot be done.

MARKETING MATERIALS This category of design is essential when dealing with clients. Our design materials must grab the attention of an audience, to be more critical, we have to make them engage. The significant is to know what the clients need. To maximize the effect on marketing materials by collecting related typography or using creative space color and other element of design. Always give your client design choices. For example, I designed three different kind of foundation logo. The client inquired a simply neat design that serves the purpose of education, scholarship and charities. So, I decided to play around with the typography and colors.

PROPOSAL This is a proposal I designed for the organization. The way I designed the proposal made it easier for the audiences to read. Nowadays, the web makes anything possible in a proposal. In order to stand out, creating a proposal that will meet the expectation of the user as well as engaging experience that will hold their interest are important. Secondly, the important part of a proposal is its information, which means minimalist design is more suitable when creating proposals.

Music APP Design

MOBILE DESIGN Mobile devices are part of our everyday life. I was assigned to design a music app. This is by far the most time consuming project, where research takes a large part of the time. The app I designed must be suitable for Iphone, Galaxy and Ipad. Before I began to design the App, I had to list the categories I would like to have for the app and sketch out the home page. The home page of the app is the most important part of the project. Once I figured out this page, everything else would flow easily.

WEB DESIGN Web design can be complex with overload of information and decision of where to place items on each page. Nowadays, a popular design trend is the Single Page Design that helps simplify content presentation for the impatient web visitor. Full-screen background images are important because it will grab the visitor’s attention. And Responsible web design displays a website at any kind of size for different devices because mobile devices plays an important part of our life. There are many websites that provide premade templates for people to create their own website without requiring tons of coding. I learned to use WordPress, a web software you can use to purchase difference themes to build your own website. For graphic designer, we are able to create a professional website for a client without doing much of the coding.

Conclusion

After completing this internship, I was able to learn the functions and day to day activities of a graphic design company and have a first hand on experience with the business world. Being able to communicate is the key when it comes to design because I have to ensure that the client is on the same page as me. It is also important to learn to be proactive as well as having good time management. Not only I learn the necessary skills to use tools like Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign, I also acquired knowledge about project management, such as learning to think outside of box, and enhancing my ideas into designs.
