The Capitol Steps C o m e dy Sept. 22 Saturday / 8 pm $28, $36, $44
Here’s a good healthy dose of comic relief when it’s needed most — right at the height of the campaign season! This hysterical musical comedy troupe returns to the Hylton Center for an evening of bipartisan spoofery. Based in Washington, D.C., The Capitol Steps have entertained audiences for more than 30 years with clever political musical parodies that lampoon those on both sides of the aisle. This talented ensemble is a treasured institution both inside and outside the beltway, even by the targets of their irreverent satirical humor. “When it comes to satire, you haven’t seen the real thing until you have been to the Capitol Steps.” (The Washington Post) Enjoy an evening of side splitting political humor in preparation for Election Day!

Ballet Folklórico de México Watch centuries of rich Mexican culture come to life as the folk dancers fill the stage, and take audiences on a journey that traces the evolution of Mexican dance from original indigenous peoples up through the present. This award-winning ensemble has garnered international acclaim because of its stunning technique, vibrant costumes, and awe-inspiring choreography. Amalia Hernández, celebrated dancer and choreographer, founded Ballet Folklórico de México 60 years ago to research, preserve and honor the richly diverse folkloric dance traditions of her country — a period spanning from the pre-Columbian era, through Spanish colonization, and into the Mexican Revolution. “Passionate…impeccable… and point of entry to the riches of a fabulous culture!” (Los Angeles Times)
Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi From a tiny country in Central Africa comes one of the most gifted and celebrated percussion ensembles in the world — Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi. Their dance and drumming performances are based on ancient sacred traditions that have been passed down through the centuries from father to son. Yet these distinctive early rhythms sound as modern as any contemporary beat. The thunderous drum sound — the “Burundi beat” as it has become known — has influenced popular Western contemporary artists like Joni Mitchell, Adam and the Ants, and Bow Wow Wow, and has gained the rapt attention of audiences worldwide. Originally used exclusively for ceremonial occasions, the distinctive drums are made from hollowed tree trunks and animal skins. Come witness ancient Burundi culture through this remarkable ensemble and its thunderous percussive rhythms and mesmerizing movements!

The Pipes, Drums and Highland Dancers of 1st Battalion The magnificent pageantry of British military tradition and history comes to life when these two esteemed military bands take the stage in ceremonial uniforms to fill the hall with rousing marches, stirring anthems, the distinctive sounds of bagpipes and brass, high-spirited Scottish highland sword dances and the precision of regimental marching. With a grand history spanning nearly three centuries, The Black Watch has served in historic conflicts going back to Ticonderoga and Waterloo, and its pipes and drummers have proudly escorted the troops into battle. The Band of the Scots Guards, formed in 1642 by King Charles, boosted morale for British troops throughout both World Wars, and today, this celebrated 40-member orchestra performs at the daily Guard Mounting at Buckingham Palace and at various state functions, while also touring the globe. Don’t miss this exciting performance featuring all of the pomp and circumstance of British life.
