BIG ADVENTURES

in the heart of... Shropshire...

Exploring Shropshire

We have all been living very different lives since the pandemic hit. More and more of us have had our worlds reduced down to our homes, and a small local area. During this time we have discovered so many wonderful places - right on our doorstep, here in Shropshire. With more traffic-free zones and cycling space, and more green spaces to enjoy - you can make the most of the Great British summer, and explore more of Shrewsbury and Shropshire. The Quarry is a firm favourite with locals, and vistors alike. It was recently voted one of the best parks in the UK by Tripadvisor users, who commented on it’s beauty and tranquility. Another amazing place to visit is Hawkstone Park Follies, which is only about 25 minutes drive from Shrewsbury and boasts beautiful landscapes, caves and stunning views. You don’t have to drive to discover some of the hidden gems of Shropshire, which you may be surprised to find are within walking or cycling distance from where you live. The Wrekin is one of the more popular spots to visit - mainly because of the reward of the best view in the county when you reach the top, but we also have some really beautiful tracks and trails, woodlands and nature reserves and some brilliant parks too. Top picks for the summer...

Visit a Local Nature Reserve - There are a number of LNR’s in and around Shrewsbury: Rea Brook Local Nature Reserve, Mousefield Nature Reserve, Radbrook Nature Reserve, Shropshire Wildlife Trust, Hereford Road Nature Reserve, Earl's Hill Nature Reserve and Stiperstones National Nature Reserve, to name just a few. That is enough to keep you going all through the summer!

Look to the stars...

The dark night skies above the Shropshire Hills make it a fabulous location for stargazers. It is actually designated by Dark Sky Discovery Partnership as a Milky Way Class rated site, meaning that the skies are dark enough to see the Milky Way with the naked eye. Seeing the Milky Way is a magical experience. You don’t need special equipment, as you can see lots with the naked eye, but binoculars or a telescope can bring a new dimensions to the stargazing experience. Don’t forget to take some photos too! Dark Sky Discovery Sites must meet basic standards. Typically they are at least 100 square metres in size –large enough to accommodate 30 stargazers, with good public access, and firm ground for wheelchairs.
