Contemporary city is inseparably with automobiles. Orderly streets and brand-new buildings become the characters of modern. Under the spatial structure of clear vehicle system, everything in the city seems organized. However, when we review the city that we now live in, there are several spatial paradoxes under the organized surface. Lots of rules that was set for the organization of vehicle become the chains of urban development. Those rules reduce original varieties and limit the development of city. The convenient and efficiency of vehicle system are based on the neglect of existing urban relationship. Taipei City, the capital was the origin of modern city in Taiwan. During Japanese colonial period, a urban renewal program brought the most advanced urban model into Taiwan. Replaced the organic urban relationship, Taipei transformed into the city based on road system. And this has become the urban scope of present Taipei. In this project, I try to build a new urban relationship on this existing urban spatial structure, a much more close relationship. Taipei is a high density city, which is not suitable for cars. Recently, the use of public transportation has reached a new height, this gives us chance to think the new urban relationships. By public transportations, a sharing city with more freedom and human identity can be imagined to rebuild the connection inbetween citizens.

Relationship of transport in Taipei Since 2000, population of Taipei doesn't change a lot, but the traffic structure has changed a lot. The usage rate of public-transport has increase faster than private vehicles.

Traffic flow analysis Following this study of traffic flow, I remove the roads in the middle of site which are less used, and enhance the importance of surrounding roads. These makes the movement of private traffic become circular instead of intersecting.

Relationships of urban bike-riding These are four relationships that represent the effect between people and environment when riding.

FAST

SLOW

Speed X Crowd

Speed X Sense

Speed of riding will be influenced by the objects. Objects make the route blurred, so rider will slow down.

Speed of riding influence the sense of riders. When they move faster and faster, they will see less and less detail of surroundings.

Clearer the route is, faster we move.

Faster we move, less we can sense.

SLOW

FAST

FAST

SLOW

Speed X Pavement

Speed X Range

Speed of riding will also be influenced by the materials of pavements. People move slower on the jagged route.

Speed of riding makes a specific sensible space. This space keeps the others away from rider. And the speed will influence the range of it.

Flatter the route is, faster we move.

Faster we move, the bigger sensible space we extend.

Existing Urban Relationship District The main space of the city are districts. Districts make space in the city managed more easily, but limit the interaction between spaces. Districts are like the islands in the concrete forest.

Vehicle Network Strait roads makes the efficient transportation. But roads in different directions make interference to each other. Also, interference causes conflict. Efficient or inefficient?

Boundary Due to the strict control, spaces with different functions are clearly separated to each other in the city. This makes strong boundaries in between different spaces, limits the urban development from existing situation.

Flat Hierarchy Urban spaces are all with clear different functions. For specific spaces like buildings or districts, there are less in variety. Our urban spaces become flat and lifeless.

Landmark The landmark is used to be the top spot of city. But the problem is that landmark is far away from our daily life. This kind of urban space isn't a humanized one.

New Urban Relationship / Cycletopia Public Space Vanished boundaries between spaces make a brand new zones surrounded by public spaces. This promotes the relationship between public spaces and our daily lives.

Car Free Zone The car free city focuses on more about individual objects, so the straight paths are not suitable anymore. Instead of straight paths, density of crowd becomes the main element of urban space.

Transit Station The car free city relies on the public transport, so the transit stations become the centers of social life. Also, they break the boundaries and reconnect the relationship between vehicles and human beings, even the natures.

Hybrid Space Hybrid spaces give the chance that different usages could happen in the same space and same time. The sparkle of interactions enhance the creativity.

Cluster As the boundaries are getting disappeared, clusters, which truely represent our daily life become the most important spaces.

Original The most obvious urban spacial structure is those routes of vehicle. The city is for cars not humans.

New Urban Context Taking off the routes, so we can rethink the relationship of all the urban objects included citizens, vehicles and buildings.

Cycletopia EXPO Enhance the relationship inbetween of objects. There are 7 pavilions to present the ideas of city without private vehicles. During the EXPO, people visit pavilions by Youbike, which is the most individual urban transport to experience how the new urban life mainly on public transport could be.

After EXPO: A Cycle Living Circle Circular Space will be kept after the EXPO, and become a cycle community area which will expand as time goes on.

LINE #food court The back alley is humanized. Renewing the alley back of the stores by surface arranged makes a new riding zone and commercial interface.

OVERLAPPING #outdoor exhibition New routes in front of the museum create riding experiences in different heights. Lightboxes in between the routes show the history of cycles and the knowledge of bike sharing system.

GATHER #co-library A circular library connects and shares the instructional resources from nearby schools and becomes the interaction space. The most important is that this breaks the limits of districts.

INTERACT #visitor center As the beginning of the EXPO, the routes of the visitor center is interlaced to make us notice more about individuals, to refresh our thinking. There are stations, informations and a show room inside.

FRAGMENT I #vendors / showcases This district is the pavilion of fragment which shows the the urban relationship doesn't have to be clearly defined. And this will make citizens closer to each other.

FRAGMENT II #outdoor cinema This area is a yard of an old government heritage added with new constructions. Try to make a fragmental space which is more energetic compared to the object-like buildings surrounded.

MAIN STAGE #playground / stage During the EXPO time, the stage is the most spiritual space of all. People can ride Youbike through this stage which is above the most political road in front of the office of president to show the democracy riding is.

Kinds of spaces in the city are temporary and aren't belong to any specific space. Of these spaces, people use some structures as materials to strengh their ownership. And this represents the true appearance of our real life. This project starts from the study of these temporary spaces. I tried to figure out several types of these spaces by analysis their appearance time in different scales. Time is the spirit of these flexible spaces. Even they pop up in different periods of time, there are still several similar characters in between, such as simple structures, way to identify ownership and the property of the site. Further, I apply the study to make the environment of Ya Mu Liao Market better, not only to promote the quality of market space but also to make the neighbor more safe and livable.

Yamuliao Traditional Market

Reserch/ Site > Structure > Space Traditional markets in Taiwan are usually pop-up on the roads in the morning. So the structures of vendors are all flexible. This makes them easy to be modulated. After the reserch of Ya-Mu-Liao market, we find out that this type of space is formed by simple structures and activities. This is the trait of pop-up space. Since the market only shows up from early morning to noon, the site is boring in the other period of time, even it becomes a negative urban space because it is off the beating track in the evening. Trying to create some pop-up social spaces in the evening for neighbors, not only make a better environment but promote the quality of the market at same time.

Nowadays, people live in the city are alienated to each other. Is there any way to change this situation? The main idea of this project is the traditional building type: san hao yuan. “San hao yuan” is typical Taiwanese traditional building type. It’s quadrangle and has private space around to leave the public space in the middle. So the relationship in this building is very close. Follow the idea, we make several layers of public spaces surrounded by residential units. So we can have closer relationship in this community. And this might be a better urban life.

Bole Manor is a large complex development of agricultural production line, village renewal and touring site. Located in the mountains of Yunnan, China, the site is a large rose farm which is mainly grown for essence oil. Undeveloped farm gives the site high potential to think the development in a different way. We try to repair the old vernacular house and add our new buildings hiddenly instead of destructive construction. The spirit of this project is harmony, to balance between residents, tourist and environment. Bole Bar_ Bole bar is located in a karst stone mountain. It's about the exploration and hiding of karst stone mountain. To comprehensively explore the mountain both inside and outside, we make the cave inside the mountain being a bar and add an outside plateform as the outdoor dinning area. The specialty of this bar is the half part of it is the cave, and a simple glass box is added along the cave to make a special space both natural and artificial. This bar is also the public living room of the village, they can share their happiness with their friends, neighbors and tourists in the bole bar.

This is a project that provides a water purification system for a slum along the river in Bangkok, Thailand. The constructions of slum are 80% built on the water, but the water there is seriously polluted. The public space and the traffic are also not ideal. The Water Purify System: 1. Gathering the trash in the water (by water flow caused by elevating the horizon) 2. Making a Pipe to purify the water 3. Pouring the purified water back to the circulation 4. Further, teaching residents the knowledge of maintaining this water purify system

Beijing , the capital of China is a hybrid city, it’s new but old. The site is just near the Beijing Central Axis and the Olympic Park, in between of the new and old Beijing. What will the hybrid community be here in the future? We find that the public activities in Beijing is very energetic, such like Chinese chessing, bird walking, Chinese kong-fu, Chinese music. You can easily see these in public spaces even on the road. But these memorial cultures are disappearing in the process of urban development. For this reason, we provide a development process to build a brand new modern and efficient community but also keep those old things. 1 Attraction: To build the tourism center at the place that is close to Olympic Park and to make numbers of exercise plazas at the place close to the neighboring community. 2 Development: Insert the commercial function and sports school to set up the character of community. 3 Upgrade: After the 2nd stage, the community can afford more high-end industry, such as hotel , upper company office, and apartment. And the public space is still energetic with the old things at same time.

This is a workshop project of bamboo constructed pavilion for the Yunlin Agriculture EXPO in Taiwan 2013. The construction sequence is divided into 2 parts, bamboo structures and thatched wall. We start each part from knowing the property of each material; further we make the units of the wall, structures and platform; then we build up the pavilion with all of the units in the final. Even we got the construction drawings, we still need to discuss about the building process and spend lots of time on measuring every bamboos to make them usable, because the bamboo is an organic material so every pieces are all different from each other. That becomes the most difficult part of this project.

On the mountains of Jia-Yi, Taiwan, there's a new farm with several animals included a buffalo, three pigs and three goats. This project start from the need of a shelter for the buffalo. According to the resources and needs of farm, we come out the idea of a hybrid cattle house with a recycle system. For the cattle house, we let the pigs and goats live with the buffalo based on their biological habits. This makes the management easier. Further, we pour the excreta into the ecological pool of the recycle system so they can show the natural cycle system in the farm to make the farm more educational. After the design, we make a construction plan, which was going to use those recycle materials in the most efficient way. And then, we started the construction process ourselves.

Built in the campus of St. Raphael Opportunity Center, this pavilion is an outdoor experiencing learning place for the students with mental retardation. For the pavilion, we come up with an idea that learning under trees might be a very special and comfortable experience. Besides, the campus is located at a place near seaside, so we decide the conceptual image of the pavilion is “wave, a wave of the sea and also of the wind. This is a 1:1 pavilion project. Our group participate this project comprehensively, from the design to the construction. Eventually, this pavilion has taken us 10 days to construct and is used until today. After the pavilion got finished, the students can have more different experiences. Since they are out from the classroom, they start getting more possibility.

X-site is the annual nonprofit contemporary art institution of Taipei Fine Art Museum, and this is our proposal for the first competition in 2014. The main concept of this proposal is the character of Taipei City. Roof top, a typical space in this city which is not public but shared and re-present the daily experience in Taipei becomes our mian idea. Since there are rooms under the plaza, we take the plaza as the roof top. Follow the patterns of the rooms, we create an organic shed made by connecting hundreds of flexible sun-shading boards. Since the sun-shading board is made of a special flexible metal, we can control the boards by shaping them into different distances and densities to represent stratified sunlight and shade. This makes the shed a multiple textured surface so the landscape-like structure can be modified to surfaces of screen, shed and pavilion by controling the units. From this shed, tube stands to the iron structures dotted arround the shed are all representations of the rooftop scenery, they are all the typical materials used to constructure the environment upstair.

Tsò-hué means being together in taiwanese and is the main concept of our proposal for the Xsite 2015. "Ban Dou" is traditional taiwanese party usually held for wedding ceremony. Red round table with cross iron structure stand is the typical furniture of the party and becomes the character of happy reunion in the mind of Taiwanese. We take the red round table set as the unit of structure. After studying the construction and mechanical model, we create a streamline pavilion of resistant strcuture constructed by hundreds units of cross iron stands. And the form is transformed into various spaces. The streamlined form is based on the environmental pattern of site. The pavilion is the gathering of natural axes and traffic flow, so it becomes the center of site as a natural meeting point. The pavilion is not only a physical meeting point but also an emotional one which reminds you all the happy gathering memories.
