Library 01 Location : 496 Franklin Avenue. Brooklyn, NY Lot Area : 5,500 Sq ft Date : Fall 2012 My library design seeks to create an experience of place by taking to heart an often used phrase by The Brooklyn Public Library in their marketing materials: “Everyone in Brooklyn Has a Library” Library I Model I FA12

LOCATED IN BOROUGH OF BEDFORD, BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY BEDFORD BRANCH HAS BEEN A PRESERVATOR AND TRANSMITOR OF KNOWLEDGE, HISTORY AND CULTURE FOR THE RESIDENCE OF BEDFORD SINCE 1898. FOR OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS, BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY BEDFORD BRANCH HAS BEEN A VITAL CENTER OF KNOWLEDGE REFLECTING DYNAMIC SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE OF BROOKLYN.

Theorizing that the Bedford Branch library is one “point” within Brooklyn’s system of 58 proximate neighborhood libraries, my design proposal is based upon the principles of a Voronoi diagram as a means of creating programmatic interior regions. My scheme further suggests that each individual visitor becomes an equally important user or “dynamic point” within the context of the library, essential to its vibrancy and to the character of the larger community beyond.

Taschen is an art book publisher founded in 1980 by Benedikt Taschen. Taschen has been a noteworthy force in making lesser seen art available to mainstream bookstores, including some fetishistic imagery, queer art, historical erotica, pornography and adult magazines. Taschen has helped bring this art into broader public view, by publishing this potentially controversial volume. The project proposes a new Taschen office in New York City, the hub of creative minds and spirit.

Location : 600 E Grand Ave, Chicago, IL Lot Area : 400 Sq ft Date : Fall 2013 Inspiration from Chicago’s iconic art and architecture drove the design. Chicago’s skyline is a constant in the reflection of the Cloud Gate, yet it is sandwiched by the ever changing skies above and the movement of people below. This translated into the relative permanence of the different types of seating within the proposal – a permanent lounge and temporary modular seating form an interior landscape. Seating arrangements have been designed to make use of the discarded cardboard plotter tubes that amass in the school’s print labs.

The primary joinery method of hand-stitched twine references the tradition of furniture upholstery. While the method of pattern making by laser etching utilizes contemporary technology to produce a pattern typical also to upholster fabric. The imagery and plans of some of Chicago’s most iconic designs, such as Marina City, the Aqua Building, the Cloud Gate and Navy Pier’s Ferris Wheel, were manipulated and abstracted to create a floral pattern set on top of a linear background. The juxtaposition of the installation’s two elements, the canopy and the seating, references SOFA Chicago’s objective of providing a market for artists who are interested in combining traditional decorative arts with functional objects. In addition to connecting the SOFA Chicago visitor to the surrounding city, the environment seeks to create a connection between the SOFA Chicago visitors and the students of Pratt Institute.
