1-1 : How the building is formed by human can be defined in 2 ways ; new construction and renovation.

1-2 :

Both process have critical and inevitable limitations.

In new construction no matter how deeply they care about the surroundings, the overall shape is defined by the architect’s imagination

Each limitations are actually in complimentary relationship!

Which then leads me to the new concept of building

NEW CONSTRUCTION

1-3 : Reversed process to pick the building that could show the previous method visually and mindsobjects.

While searching for the proper building for this experiment, I found this mysterious building, SUN PLAZA. It’s an old building proposed as a luxury shopping mall in 1982. As modern department store appears, however, Sun Plaza lost it’s position and became just a normal shopping arcade. The surrounding town is now developed into a huge residential area with high rise apartments. Sun Plaza is lost in time, looking for change.

It’s a whole new building, but inside the boundary with clear reason to start designing.

Interesting part of this project is that the shape of reversed part is totally untouched by an architect. It’s just a simple result of flipping the given mass! This gave me better condition to keep on free/reasonable design.

WHAT’S THE MAIN IDEA? WHERE TO GO... LOOK HERE!

HOW THE METHOD APPLIED?

WHEN YOU’RE DONE THIS PAGE WHY I START THIS PROJECT?

1-3 : To sepcify this abstract statement, I’m going back to the start: Relationship between human and building. Both being under control of time, human life is shorter than the building. This makes...

...‘building preservation’ worthy by extending our memory of experience

1-4 : Pick the memory of a single day. Without visiting areas, majority of spaces and buildings are just acting as a background. We would never have chance to see what’s going on there!

1-2 : However disconnection somehow helps forming new ecosystem. The trains crossing from all over the Europe carries different kinds of seeds and insects on the wagons. These creatures and plants sometimes drop on the site, starting their own life in this un-disturbed land. Foreign species are now the new actors of Schaelbaek formation.

1-3 : Let’s look with some broader perspectives. There are now FACTORIES along the SEINE RIVER which leads to BUDA and HAREN. Bridges over the water_♣ and railways_♦ play crucial roles of binding these split neighborhood together. But still there’s a huge untouched blank_♥, with abandoned train deopot surrounded in railways.

It’s quite hard to reach this building since there’s only one way to reach the site.

1-1 : The project began with the site visit of Schaelbaek region in Brussel. What’s clearly seen on the whole area is the disconnection of South and North. Railways cut the ground-level into 2 part. Huge land is totally left behind, isolated.

Potentials of nature will be rediscovered as more and more species are discovered ...with huge collection.

Reminds me of the Noah’s Ark. Borrowing its concept of future prediction + assembling species, old station is now reimaginfind further potentials for both human and non-humans with combined technologhy and imagination!

Sharing the strategy of reusing the wagon, each vision is now combined cycle of program along the nature. By using the given condition of nature, its time four us to introduce new future potentials towards co-existence.

How to gain ACCESSABILITY. For better accessability, pedestrian road must be in first step to consider. By adjusting the floor heights, the building now have 2 ENT. (in the

Next, why DIAGONAL AXIS? The axis is suggested as a solution for truck access underground the building. Same language is continued above in structure, space, and flow of the building.

KEY WORDS??

1-1 : What needs to be rescued is the regional cow market, while the old fashioned market is not welcomed to everyone. Dying space was now in the center of controversy, waiting for change along the new ‘trend’ and revival of the ‘lost’ memory of conventional market at the same time.

1-2 : Trucks are essential to the marketplace in order to transport various goods. However without a loading dock, they were just using the edge of the road as temporary loading. Traffic disorder surrounding the site blocks the entrance which causes bad condition in accessability. The building needs an extra space for truck! Luckily solution can be found in the shape of land. Diagonal axis of shape provides enough length for truck to go inside.

1-3 : Crossing axis splits the building in half, seperating front and back from the previous mass. Inside the divided mass, however, axis plays vital role of leading continuous circulation of programs.

MID : In order to re-organize the overall flow, the main focus was underground area where NEW COW MARKET SYSTEM is located in. Following 1/200 model then shows the mass formation based on the diagonal line.

3RD : As a linkage space for new market, stairway is expanded to RECIPE LIBRARY This part is specified in the 1/50 model with the structural detail of old and new.

FINAL : Co-existing relationship between the upper existing program is completed by various ARCADE. Circluating programs are now connected back-to-back, categroized in color through the 1/200 transparent model.

1-4 : Target residents are middle-aged near retirement and young rookies who just began their careers.

In support of Water Resources Corporation(ICHNP) and Housing Coummunities Corporation(SH), residents now have affordable dwelling with discounted water bill.

1-3 : Designated site is Dasan-dong, one of the aging old towns in Seoul. Residential area of hilly land is mainly housings of 4-5 floors. Since most of them are built near 70s, the town lack of major facilities. We picked ‘mirae building’ as renovation. As located in the lowest point in the site, this makes it easier to operate sustainable system for the new pool, sauna and farm.

1-1 : In response to increasing demand of city life, Seoul is now full of apartments built over the previous old land. In this competition, we propose the FUTURE housing in slightly diffrent angle in combinatinon of facilities and housing.

1-2 : Water storage is main infrastructure of city, but also one of the unwanted public facilities. Our goal is to build a house with water storage inside, by providing better condition to residents with water-related spaces.
