THE PRODUCT

What’s i-Mesh? It is a patented, award-winning, sustainable and fully customizable fabric created for architecture, design, art and poetry.

i-Mesh is a technical and sustainable textile for architecture, a brand-new, patented technology conceived after years of internal research in the marine and aerospace sectors. It is an absolute novelty within the construction market: a non-woven textile made of everlasting, highperformance fibers that can be applied both outdoors and indoors. i-Mesh is produced exclusively as bespoke panels, meaning we do not produce waste; we provide tailored, shaped panels, while the minimal scraps we create are utilized in art and design products. The daily challenges we face deal with art and the sciences, as we understand and love both. We share this passion with visionary thinkers worldwide.

T H E C O M PA N Y

A motley team into a glocal company We acquired know-how over 30 years while making marine and aerospace textiles, and today our projects are developed by a multicultural team composed of architects, engineers, material experts, computational designers and art curators. i-Mesh is the result of visual research and scientific studies on the physical characteristics of the high tech fibers we exclusively utilize. This experience derives from our pluriannual activity in product design and technical fabrics for the nautical and aerospace sectors, where the highest levels of performance and reliability are basic requirements. Our team facilitates the union of i-Mesh technology and the architect’s vision, as well as the success of the installation. i-Mesh is produced in Italy before the amazing backdrop of Monte Conero in the Marche region, where the elegance of our nature and the soft landscape have forged the company’s DNA. It is in this luxurious environment that we perpetrate the model of a glocal company, able to provide the best assistance to customers worldwide, together with excellent, “just on time” production performance. A glocal and sustainable philosophy oriented to a globalized world.

INDOOR / OUTDOOR

Elegance and performance, indoor and outdoor “Separate without dividing thanks to an airwall, feel cool under a sunshade or improve the energy balance of your building while protecting the facade, enrich the walls with a piece of art. Contemplate the projections of shadows, the light effects: we are in the business of sustainable well-being.

We make high-tech curtains, tapestries, ceilings, sky roof protections and vertical partitions for interiors. Instead outdoors, i-Mesh filters and reflects excessive sun radiations, providing light, thermic and visual comfort. The response to projections and the strong decorative character of our patterns make i-Mesh an excellent material for scenography and experience-based communication projects. Its lightness makes installation very easy, its strength and resistance to abuse makes it last forever. Its attractive appearance makes it desirable for all sorts of applications in design.

In this installation i-Mesh is utilized to change the perception of the rigid interior into a soft and hazy space. The visitor moves between a curved translucent framing system and the outcome is an extraordinary ethereal effect that makes the visitor feel as if he’s among the clouds. Located on 27 square miles of desert landscape in New Mexico, Spaceport America is Virgin Galactic’s human spaceflight headquarters and flight operations center. Funded by the state of New Mexico and Sierra and Dona Ana counties, Spaceport America provides cutting-edge facilities and a remarkable training location for astronauts, as well as the perfect setting to start and finish the spaceflight itself. The Gateway to Space building – a signature feature of Spaceport America – serves as a home for the vehicles, a hub for astronaut preparation and the nerve center for flight operations. 29

Scenography “Puzzle Me! is the narration of a great cultural project which arose from the collaboration between the Academy of Beijing and NABA Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti. The scenography, conceived together with Marco Cristini, is a communication platform with a strong impact on which Chinese choreographer Yang Jinag placed 11 performers from 7 different countries to dance at the sound of the RUAN, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument.

The i-Mesh membrane obtained by the interweaving of mineral fibers returns the projected image marked by the pattern; a poetry made of shadows and light that enchants the observer. The scenographer Margherita Palli chose to match two materials which reflect the identity of the project and the symbolic and conceptual intentions of the show: paper, ancient material that the Chinese tradition transforms into forms ranging from objects to calligraphy, and i-Mesh, the essential texture, a symbol of technological matter in its purest form. Thanks to this result, i-Mesh has been selected as Finalist 2016 for the category “Light and Surface Interior for the prestigious Surface Design Award 2016 in London.

FIBERS

Six natural solution

Zylon has very high breaking load and value of elastic modulus; excellent creep and heat resistance.

Carbon fibers have several advantages including high stiffness, high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion.

Fiberglass is excellent for outdoor solutions because steady over time, due to its capacity of resistance to sunlight exposure and excellent in the matter of reflectance to light and heat.

TechnoraÂŽ is a very strong fiber - eight times as strong as steel - and has great heat and chemical resistance.

Basalt fibers has similar characteristics to fibreglass but has better physico-mechanical properties.

The Tapestry Collection was first presented at Design Week 2018 and stimulated dialogue with a special and coherent location - the fascinating post-industrial space of the historic Cova confectionery industry in the emerging NoLO area, north of Milan. The collection is regularly exhibited in art and design galleries. Contemporary Tapestry is the infinite story of thread becoming texture, new material, technological fabric for facades, covers, accessories, screens, gadgets. Fluid, flexible, iconic, art object and project, architecture, design. Alberto Fiorenzi’s intuition is the story of a material which has been borrowed from the performance world, reconverted, rendered pure, absolute, naked against form and creation, able to reconnect the threads of the semantic future with the history and experience of Superstudio and Cristiano Toraldo di Francia. 79

Histogram is a tribute to the transformation of the rigid enclosure of architecture into a new digital window that connects different spaces, the past and present, reducing the object’s stiffness into the soft and light fiber of i-Mesh’s transparent fabric.

Cristiano Toraldo di Francia Cristiano Toraldo di Francia founded Superstudio in Florence in 1966: the experience will come to mark recent history’s poetics, aesthetics and conceptualizations of architecture and design with works, objects and products that have been the protagonists of some of the most important collections in the world - MoMA, MET, Pompidou Center, Frac and MAXXI. 80

A Journey from A to B, da Gli Atti fondamentali, Vita (Supersuperficie) SUPERSTUDIO (Courtesy Archivio Superstudio)

“Cristiano inferred and recognized the target together with the actuality of the project, the same that he had theorized as far back as Superstudio when he hypothesized infinite surfaces placed equally on the ground and in the sky” “Visual and conceptual affinity, as i-Mesh unites people and cultures just like the neural networks that supply the earth and put the planet in communication. Thus the Superstudio Histogram has evolved into the world of i-Mesh, in a theme which is at times decorative and always technological, testifying the cultural heritage of peoples and the permanence of millennial traditions which are renewed.” 81

Lightmorphing: light and space on show for the first Korean solo exhibition of the Italian firm Migliore+Servetto Architects, at Onground Gallery in Seoul. “Lightmorphing” is a concept which the studio has been working on for several years that gives life to site-specific dynamic installations that interact with both natural and artificial light, and through this light are shaped, fused and amplified in the space in between. “The exhibition focuses on the richness and power of the relationship between space, lighting and structures, seen in its dynamic and changing dimension,” explained Ico Migliore and Mara Servetto, co-founders of the studio.

Just a few months after his passing, i-Mesh likes to pay tribute to Cristiano Toraldo di Francia by continuing alogn a path that he began with us in 2017. He had used i-Mesh scraps in the teaching activities called “Librabito” then he accepted the invitation to create a tapestry, and therefore he contributed his reputation in helping us start reflections on Soft Architecture.
