2015 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Holstein Friesian Herdbook. This occasion will be commemorated with special events taking place throughout the year.

The 5th Annual Emerald Expo took place on Saturday 11th April at the Punchestown Event Centre, Naas. This is a major showcase for the breed and continues to grow as one of the key events for the Association.

The Association was founded in 1965, then known as the Irish Friesian Breeders Association, IFBA. The name was changed to IHFA in 1994 to mark the increased influence of Holstein genes in the population. The Herdbook was set up as an independent Irish entity in 2001 with the formation of a central database at ICBF of which IHFA are shareholders. The abolition of milk quotas after April 2015 is seen as the most important opportunity for dairy farmers in the last 30 years. A new generation of dairy farmers are entering milk production and IHFA are in a strong position to offer services which will enhance and strengthen their business operation.

The National IHFA Holstein Friesian Open Day will take place on the Hannan family farm, ‘Lisnalty’ on 8th July. It is the policy of IHFA to move the Open Day across the country and we are delighted to have a herd in the South West hosting the event in 2015. Already there are many enquiries from the general dairy farming industry. This is an excellent herd of Holstein Friesian cows developed on the strength of national and international cow families

The increase in global milk output, coupled with a softening demand for dairy product has caused a sharp fall in price at the farm gate. However, sentiment in the market place has improved due to reduced output from New Zealand, a weaker Euro and lower product prices driving demand. Caution remains essential as much will depend on the potential reopening of the Russian market to EU dairy products.

As ever, it will be a great family day out and an occasion to meet up with friends and renew acquaintances as well as viewing a quality herd of cows developed over 50 years of pedigree breeding.

IHFA provide pedigree registration, parentage validation, genomic service, grading up, conformation scoring, balanced breeding advice, catalogues, breed promotion amongst its many services

The Irish Pure Friesian Club will also host an Open Day for its members on the 19th June at the O’Keeffe family farm, “Churchclara”, Co. Kilkenny. The breed has excellent traits for fertility, milk solids and longevity which when crossed with the Holstein can take advantage of hybrid vigour while retaining pedigree status. The breed also has excellent beefing qualities.

Genomic evaluation is a new breeding tool for cattle breeding in this generation. The IHFA board adopted the new advanced SNP technology and genomics for parentage validation for all males instead of microsatellites used previously. A considerable bank of DNA has been built up by IHFA from its stock bulls over the years. This is now proving to be an invaluable ‘industry good’ resource which is available to the Central Database to utilise in sire validations through imputation. The outcome from this change allows for the selection of highly reliable stock bulls with genomic values that otherwise would be missed for breeding purposes.

The National Herds Competition is a most prestigious competition in promoting excellence in cattle breeding and cow families, which are the cornerstone of the breed. There is very strong competition at club level to select club representatives. The young members are going from strength to strength with increased membership and new and innovative competitions. YMA is the succession of IHFA and the Association will endeavour to broaden the scope and autonomy of their affiliated Association within YMA age.

To simplify the system for our members, we are using the tissue sample from the BVD National Eradication programme as far as is practical to do so. It can’t be emphasised highly enough that greater care is required with the storage and handling of the sample pre-posting. In order to reduce recalls it is critical that samples are stored in a fridge at 5 degrees Celsius and posted regularly.

The introduction of the Showmanship League is a great success with more and more shows wishing to facilitate classes. This competition helps with the schooling of young members and promotion of the breed at a local level.

The compulsory phase of the BVD National Eradication programme is in its third year and IHFA have an agreed price for members of €3.40 per sample tested with the Irish Equine Centre (IEC). For those receiving a Negative BVD Herd Status a reduced charge of €2.50 has been negotiated with IEC.

I wish to thank all the officers for their work and effort in ensuring that YMA continues as a strong force in IHFA. I also wish to thank the parents who take the time to ensure that their youngsters get to compete in the various YMA activities. I wish to congratulate the winners but more importantly to thank all those who participate, as this is the great strength of YMA.

The Association has consistently sought to raise the profile of the Holstein Friesian breed at local, regional and national levels. There is a busy schedule of events planned for 2015 in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary celebrations and with the help of the Clubs these events will provide a strong endorsement for the breed.

Sponsorship is a key ingredient to the successful running of these events and to that end I wish to record my thanks to all sponsors throughout the year. I wish to thank our office and field staff for their work and dedication in promoting the Holstein Friesian breed and delivering IHFA services, also YMA, local Holstein Friesian clubs and the Irish Pure Friesian Club.

The club structure is a key vehicle for IHFA to communicate with members at local level. IHFA wish that all clubs promote the IHFA golden jubilee at a club event during the year. IHFA will provide scrolls to all members who compete in their local herd’s competition.

The Official Launch of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations took place at the Emerald Expo on April 11th. A special 50th Anniversary logo has been designed which will appear on all IHFA prizes and medallions that will be presented. A number of commemorative items have been produced for the occasion. These include a commemorative tie, trolley token and pen. Also a special IHFA Scroll will be presented to the Club Herds Competition participants. The IHFA Spring Journal 2015 will include a commemorative section of 50 years of IHFA. To mark our celebrations, IHFA will present commemorative medallions at a number of key shows Emerald Expo, Tullamore Show, YMA Calf Show and the National Dairy Show in 2015. We are very much looking forward to the numerous celebrations that will be taking place throughout the country this year. Storage conditions of the tissue tag for use in Genomics is more critical.

2. calves

To reduce recall rates, please ensure you store samples in a fridge at 5˚C and post regularly.

3. Tag the animal within 7 days of birth. Ensure animal is registered with the Department at time of tagging to ensure no delay in receipt of test results. Seal the sample metal tube into its sample storage container - the IE numbers should match. (Leave the lid open for laboratory purposes- do not cut it off). DO NOT PIERCE the silver film on the sample metal tube.

The incidence of recalls have increased. You may be charged for re-tests.

4. Keep the sample tubes in a refrigerator or in a cool dry place. Post the samples no later than 4-5 days of taking the sample. Include no more than 10 samples per envelope, approx. Minimum Postage charge €1.05

6. RECEIVING RESULTS: The testing laboratories report results electronically to the ICBF (Irish Cattle Breeding Federation) database. ICBF issue results to the herd owner by SMS text message. In the absence of a mobile number, a paper report will be issued. You can also log onto the database to your herd results at www.icbf.com The anticipated results are NEGATIVE, POSITIVE, EMPTY (no tissue in the sample) and INCONCLUSIVE. Examples of letters and other information are on the Animal Health Ireland website (www.animalhealthireland.ie). These letters will also contain submission forms for the follow up samples. It is important to read all notification letters thoroughly for advice on the next step to follow.

Tail Docking of Animals Under the S.I. 263, Protection of Animals kept for farming purposes Act 1984, (Prohibition of Tail Docking) 2003 it is stated that;

SRM Male Cert SUPPLEMENTARY SECTION FOR MALES ‘SRM’ The Herd Book in accordance with Department Agriculture, Food & Marine (DAFM) ruling has now set up a Supplementary Section for Males which do not qualify for the Main Section of the Herd Book. These bulls will be graded SRM ‘Supplementary Register Male’. To qualify for entry in the Male Supplementary Section of the herd book male animals must meet the following criteria. 1. Be identified in accordance with the rules of the Association. 2. Conform to breed standards and be descended from either a Holstein, Friesian or Holstein/Friesian sire, and have three generation recorded ancestry. 3. DNA verification required. Note: All female progeny for registration of SRM sires will be graded ‘ASR’ Application of the Rules: • SRM sire x Pedigree dam = ‘SRM’ Male or ‘ASR’ Female. • SRM sire x ASR or BSR dam = ‘ASR’ Female. • No grading up through the male line allowed

1. A person shall not remove or mutilate or cause or permit another person to remove or mutilate the tail or part of the tail of a bovine animal 2. A person shall not have in his or her possession or under his or her control sell or supply a bovine animal if the tail or part of the tail of the animal has been removed or multilated in contravention of paragraph 1). An exception is allowed to deal with single cases of tail injuries etc. “after administration of an anaesthetic, by a registered veterinary surgeon where, in his or her opinion, it is necessary for the proper treatment of disease or injury in a single animal”. POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES 1. This requirement may be inspected under cross compliance. 2. Cattle for export may not be accepted if tails are docked.

DAFM Procedure For Bringing Animals To Shows Breeders & exhibitors of cattle must obtain a Certificate of Compliance prior to the movement of an animal to a Show. When applying for a Certificate of Compliance to bring an animal to a Show, it is recommended that the breeder should not specify a destination herd. This Movement Notification will replace the CMMS 4 form. The Irish Shows Association have made it a condition of entry into shows that only cattle for which a valid Certificate of Compliance is provided to the Show Secretary will be allowed to be shown on the day of the Show.

On the day of the Show, the Certificate of Compliance should then be presented to the Show Secretary along with the bovine passport for the animal. The breeder and the Show Secretary will complete the Movement Notification section of the Certificate which will then be sent to the local DVO for recording onto the AIM system. Where an animal is being shown at different Shows during the validity period of the Certificate of Compliance, the breeder can photocopy (or re-print) the Certificate and present this to the Show Secretary on the day of the second or subsequent Show.

EMBRYO REGISTRATION

All Donor Dams MUST be DNA tested - Bag will be sent to farmer as soon as embryo registration forms received in office. • Cost of DNA test on donor dams to be incurred by IHFA. • Charge of €20 per registration to be implemented for all female embryo calves to cover cost of exra administration. • One in every 50 embryo female calves will be parentage verified. Cost will be incurred by IHFA. • IHFA should receive a copy of all embryo registration forms (ET 1) and (ET 2) forms from relevant technicians. • If there are two sires on the ET 1 form all calves from that flush must be fully parentage tested at the farmers expense (€50 fee for males will cover this). • On applying for blue card for Embryo calf donor dam and recipient dam must be entered. The vast majority of the errors IHFA encounter in registrations on the Animal Events book are directly associated with the idenitifcation of one’s stock-bull. Please take note of the diagram accross, which shows clearly how to carry out a ‘once off’ notification of the identification of your stock-bull. If you have a stock-bull, you may allocate a short code to the bull, and use this short code when registering the SIRE of a calf. We recommend you use the breed of the bull, combined with the last three digits of the tag (e.g. HF234). The “Short Code” only needs to be allocated once. The short code you allocate for your stockbull needs to be consistently applied when registering. 17

There was great interest again this year in the All Ireland Awards Competition introduced in 2010. We received 72 nominations in total. The competition is going from strength to strength and is a real talking point amongst breeders. Again we had strong representation from the Irish Pure Friesians. I wish to thank all Competitors who took the time and effort to picture and enter their animals. The awards were announced and presented at a special function on the 20th February at the Killeshin Hotel, Portlaoise, Co. Laois. The competition was based on submitting a photograph of a prized animal at a local or national show. There were nine classes of entries. 1. All Ireland Heifer born after 1st Jan ‘14 2. All Ireland Heifer born between 1st July & 31st Dec ‘13 3. All Ireland Heifer born between 1st Jan & 30th June ‘13 4. All Ireland Heifer born between 1st Jan & 31st Dec ‘12 5. All Ireland 3 year old cow in milk born between 1st Jan & 31st Dec ‘11 6. All Ireland 4 year old cow in milk born between 1st Jan & 31st Dec ‘10 7. All Ireland 5 year old cow in milk born between 1st Jan & 31st Dec ‘09 8. All Ireland Mature cow in milk born on or before 31st Dec ‘08 9. All Ireland Irish Pure Friesian in Milk Class - 87.5% Breed Fraction The entries were scrutinized by a pre selection panel of five judges who took into account the quality of the animal as photographed and their winning successes at various shows. There was a final selection of six photographs which were printed in the Winter Journal.

All Ireland Awards 2015 All Ireland Awards 2015 based on Summer Shows 2015 Prizewinners & animal photo The All Ireland Awards are a judgement of the quality of an animal which has been exhibited within the show ring at recognised shows or events during the year of competition. This is not solely a photographic competition although the quality of the photograph is considered in Judging as well as Show winnings during the year of the Competition. LAST DATE for entries is immediately after Millstreet Show - (no later than Oct. 28th) RULES 1. To be eligible for entry the animal must be registered with IHFA and in the Herd Number of the IHFA member in accordance with the entry. In the case of a syndicate ownership one of the members to be a member of IHFA and the animal be registered in the herd number of an IHFA member of the syndicate 2. All entries must be returned to the IHFA office on the official entry form & along with animals pedigree certificate and signed by the owner by the closing date. It is the responsibility of the owner/exhibitor to enter the animal into the appropriate class of the competition and supply all the relevant show and pedigree information, plus a photo (side-view only), which must be attached to the entry form. 3. Maximum of 2 entries per class. In the event of large numbers, only one entry will be considered in pre-selecting the final six.

The winning entries were based on the combined placings of fourteen judges who adjudicated on the photographs in each class as they appeared in the Winter Journal. Judges were selected from the IHFA judges panel representing the broad geographical area of the country and on the basis that they had no entries in any of the classes.

4. Photographs - Black & White or Colour 5” x 7” side-view only will be accepted and must be taken during the current show season. Qualification: A photo taken in the prior show season may be considered for entry but must gain prior approval by selection judges. Note: 3/4 Rear shots are not acceptable and will not be judged!

There was also an opportunity for members to send in their individual score card and take part in an Open Stock Judging Competition. 42 entries were received.

5. Any animal or exhibitor that had been disqualified from a show during the current year for breaking rules will not be eligible to enter for a period of years as specified by the Board.

I wish to thank everyone who submitted their photographs and helped make the competition a success. 6. Judges may not vote in classes where they have bred animals or been involved in their ownership.

Finally I wish to thank all the members for taking part in the stock judging.

7. A complete list of all relevant show placings in the current year must be submitted by the owner / exhibitor. The National Dairy Show, Millstreet will be considered the final show for entries. Animals for whom incorrect or incomplete show placings have been supplied by the exhibitor will be disqualified. The closing date will be strictly adhered to.

IHFA Open Day 2015 INVESTMENT IN COW FAMILIES REAPS DIVIDENDS AT LISNALTY! The National Holstein Friesian Open Day in 2015 will be hosted by the Hannan Family of the Lisnalty Herd, Friarstown Co Limerick.

While visiting the Hannan family farm and viewing the herd one was awestruck with the quality and depth of pedigree of cow families in the herd. Paul recalls from memory each cow and heifer and can trace back the many generations of breeding. Being the hospitable people they are I was invited in for tea and had a long chat with Jimmy and his wife Marie who started it all. As I was driving home the words of the song “…It’s a long way from Clare to here.” could be an appropriate title to the life history.

Jimmy Hannan wears his Clare colours on his sleeve. He grew up on a dairy farm near Ardnacrusha, on the Limerick City bounds. He was the youngest of four brothers so an alternative livelihood had to be found despite his love of farming. He got a job in Limerick city at Lindsay Brothers’ drapery shop. In 1956 he opened his own shop at the age of 19 with his father going guarantor. He bought 22 acres in Friarstown, Co. Limerick, when he got married in 1965 and his wife Marie managed the farm. They were blessed with six children. He was very much influenced by Fr. Dan O Mahony, Rector Pallaskenry College who advised him to get into pedigree 44

Friesians and milk record. In 1966 he bought his first Friesians. He sold the shop in 1977 and became a full time farmer buying extra land and expanding the herd. Today they farm 700 acres of which 150 acres are rented. Paul runs the Dairy enterprise. His brother John runs a beef enterprise rearing all the Holstein Friesian male calves and finishing through to slaughter. He also runs a 60 cow suckler herd finishing 150 head in total. John also has a successful silage contracting business. All this was built on the back of the milking cow says Paul. Today the herd is producing 1.2m litres quota which is sold to Kerry Coop for liquid consumption. The cows are split calving with 60% calving in the autumn and 40% in the spring. The grazing platform extends to 72 acres carrying 100 cows approximately. This is a heavy stocking rate of over 3LU/hectare. The harvesting of baled silage at optimum intervals forms an important part of grassland management. All the major annual tasks, like silage making, are carried out by the family. This is a high output herd. The winter ration consists of top quality bailed silage - cut at 7 weeks - beet, maize, crimped wheat with a top up ration, 21%CP, and fed in the parlour supplied by Roches feeds. The silage quality this past winter was 76DMD. Paul inherited the love of the cows and recalls that when he was only 10 years of age he started training calves to walk. He won that year at Boher, Limerick, Cappamore and Charleville –‘and that’s how it all began for me!’. After his Leaving Cert he got a placement in the Horwood Herd of Stan Bone in the UK where he furthered his knowledge of Pedigree breeding. Paul enjoyed success as a judge from an early age representing the Limerick/Clare club and winning the under 18 stockjudging competition of the British and Irish young members (BFCS) at the Royal Show. He was the youngest Irishman to do so at the time. He was instrumental in setting up a young members club in Ireland which became the YMA. Paul is a member of the International European Panel of Judges, judging Norfolk show in 2012, the Spanish National Show in 2013, the NRM in Holland in 2014 and, most recently, the Danish National Show in 2015. 45

Jimmy was the first secretary of the Limerick/Clare Club, established in 1973. During a Limerick/Clare tour to the UK, and while visiting the Ullswater Herd of Tom Carrick, Jimmy was very impressed with the Sunray family. He purchased two members from the family which were offered for sale at Carlisle Black and White sale. Ullswater Sunray 107 was one of the purchases at 2000gns. This purchase was to change everything for the Hannans and elevate them to the top echelons of pedigree breeding. She became one of the best known show cows of the breed in Ireland with 21 championships to her credit. She won the RDS three times 1990,’91 &’92. The quest for females from the best lines in Ireland, Canada and UK continued. Cow families such as Shower, Sassy, Tamy, Impala, Kimo, Lulu, Inka Ideal, Lyme, Melody, Balertwine, Pledge, Lauren, Madame, Raven…. the list continues, were developed and progressed in the herd. I was very impressed with the quality udders on the heifer crop. There is a dry Melody heifer showing tremendous promise which will be calved in shortly for her second. She will be one to watch out for in the future. There will be a youngstock sale from the heart of these cow families which will offer the discerning breeder the opportunity to start a cow family in their own herd and build for the future. The breeding philosophy at Lisnalty is high production, functional type combined with body strength. ‘Cows need correct feet & legs and sound udders to last in our high production environment.’ says Paul. IHFA classification and linear scoring services are used to help identify strengths and weaknesses in the herd. Paul comments, ‘It is important to get an independent assessment. As a breeder you tend to get over familiar with the herd of cows and not recognize the weaknesses until they are pointed out to you.’

The Herd is classified in the top categories with 86% VG/EX. Herd health is an important consideration and all animals are vaccinated against BVD, IBR and Leptospirosis. Paul is a strong supporter of the local Limerick/Clare club entering the club Herds Competition where he has been very successful. He has represented the club at the National IHFA Herds Competition and maintains a strong record of success winning his section outright in ‘09,’10,’11 and runner up ‘12,’13 and ‘14. He is married to Eileen and they have three children Jane, Clare and Bill.
