Chairman’s Message Dear Holstein Breeder On behalf of the Limerick & Clare Friesian Breeders Club, it gives me great pleasure to present the first edition of the Limerick and Clare Herd Directory. Being a Breeder is vital to be part of a Friesian Breeders club as it gives great opportunity to meet and network with like minded enthusiasts. All club events are geared towards breeding, nutrition and stockmanship so we as breeders can breed cows with excellent conformation that are long lasting and trouble free with the most up to date and relevant information. The Breeders in the Limerick & Clare area are well known thoroughout the country and beyond and have invested heavily in both time and money in purchasing elite genetics from around the world. The development of the genetics has resulted in many successes both in and out of the show ring at National and International levels. The aim of our Directory is to promote and market our breeders and showcase the work and effort that they have invested in developing their pedigree herds. To our sponsors who have once again come on board to support our club we Thank You! As breeders and farmers we can not develop our business without your knowledge and products and I would encourage all farmers to support our sponsors where possible. Its with great pleasure the Limerick Clare Club celebrate the IHFA National Open day being hosted in Limerick Clare region at Lisnalty Holsteins. We at Lisnalty are delighted to host this prestigous event. The Club was formed in 1973 to promote Friesian breeding the Limerick Clare area. Since then, there have been major strides in the dairy industry and more importantly how breeding has improved over the years. As President, I would like to personally congratulate the breeders who have taken the time to advertise and promote the breed through this directory. In Your Opinion, What Was The Best Bull Of All Time? Paddy: Grove Brandy and CBS King Henry Thomas: The most significant bulls marking our herd are Hanoverhill Inspiration, Hilltopper Warden, Hanoverhill Starbuck, Barold Rock Seal and Carnation Counsellor Ted: Blackstar, Storm and Durham Sons Mervyn: There were a lot of bulls making an impact at the time, some good at the time and in hindsight, some not. However the only bull that I am going to mention is Oman, undoubtly a breed changer.At that time the Holstein Friesian was coming under pressure from other breeds due to a fertility issue, that with the advent of concentrated spring calving was a challenge. However the introduction of Oman blood could make a big improvement to fertility in one generation. Due to the quality of his udders he was also a very controversial bull, however I feel that when history looks back Oman and his sons will be given a lot of credit for the black and white cows in Irish fields. What’s The Biggest Change in the Breed? Paddy: The introduction of the Holstein Breed. Thomas: The transition from British Friesian to Holstein Friesian; easy to handle and produce a lot more milk Mervyn: Udder quality (despite Oman!) has improved a lot, particularly Hanoverhill Inspiration 4|

What was the most memorable moment as Chairman of Limerick Clare Club? Paddy: Stock judging and field evenings and the social aspect of prize givings Thomas: We held a race night in the Woodlands Hotel and collected over €10,000 for Milford Hospice which was a great boost for the club; Getting a good crowd to the Dinner Dance with Johnny Carroll playing to over 220 in Adare; and finally bull sales held in WB Fitz’s yard! Ted: The Club’s 25th Anniversary was celebrated at the Woodlands Hotel on 15th November 1998. Mervyn: Four years of them! There were many, many great moments that highlighted the benefits of joining a club and exposing yourself to a different enviroment, but to pick one.... I had organised a club trip to Sligo and Mayo, the first farmer we were to visit, had kindly laid on soup and sandwiches at a local bar. I thought safe enough, the tour bus turned the corner to be greeted by a Sligo version of Hawaii , sandy beach, homely bar, great food, ample food, the waitresses wearing hoopla skirts, I earned my time as chairman that day!!
