Independent Task The first two tasks are Independent Tasks Personal/ ideas/ opinions are the basis for your
answer EXAMPLE : - “Choose a teacher you admire and explain. Why you admire him/ her. Please include specific examples & details in your explanation�.
Task 1 Practice describing different kinds of topics A PERSON: a family member, teacher, coach,
friend, boss, neighbor etc. A PLACE: a room, house, park, lake, river, mountain, city, country etc. A THING: a class, course, instrument, tool, skill, ability etc. AN EVENT: a hobby, sport, festival, custom etc
Task 2 THE SECOND TASK presents you with two
actions/options/situations /opinions It doesn’t matter which one you choose but give acceptable reason EXAMPLE : - “Do you prefer to take essay exams or multiple choice exams ? use reason to support your response”
Be Confident Be prepared to describe a familiar topic Organize your ideas before you speak Use examples Try to use figures of speech Don’t be too emotional Be logical
Integrated Task I Information From Two Sources Read, Listen & Summarize
Outline Read a passage on a given topic Then listen to a speaker talk about the topic A question appears on the screen and is read aloud
by the narrator Synthesize and summarize the information 30 sec to prepare & 60 sec to respond
Develop Fluency Define your opinion clearly Give specific reasons that support your option Organize your reasons Defend your opinion logically Give appropriate examples to support your opinion
Integrated Task I In the FIRST INTEGRATED TASK, you read an
announcement/ a bulletin/ a letter, etc Describes a campus related issue Listen to 1/2 students expressing their views on the
issue Synthesize and summarize what you have read and
heard It doesn’t ask your opinion
Task 3 Example:
Read a short passage on “change in meals plan� in a college Now listen to 2 students who are talking about that plan
Question:
The man expresses his opinion of the new meal plan. Report his opinion, and explain the reasons that he gives for having that opinion
Main Speaker Focus mainly on the opinion of the main speaker. Main speaker is the one who states an opinion and
gives reasons for holding that opinion The second speaker usually just agrees with the
main speaker. The reading acts as a gap filler. Don’t give your personal opinion
Connect information Take notes on the key points of the reading Take notes of the listening Organize & summarize the main speaker’s opinion. Simply State the speaker’s opinion within the
given time.
Task 4 THE SECOND TASK in integrated section is about
an academic subject Read a short passage Listen to a professor lecturing briefly about the
same subject Integrate what you have read and heard
The Lecture Find the main concept and definition If unique details are mentioned note them Paraphrase the lecture & the reading Quote directly from the sources ,1 or 2 points

Read a short passage on “Aboriginal People�
Listen to the part of lecture of the same topic
Question:
Explain how the aboriginal people are identified. Draw upon information in both the reading and the lecture
Integrated Task II Listen and Summarize To listen closely and reply well is the highest perfection we are able to attain in the art of conversation.
Task 5 and 6 These are also Integrated Tasks Listen to a short conversation/ a brief excerpt from
a lecture Asks you to answer a question / explain a point
with examples/ summarize the information & express your opinion on that 20 sec for preparation & 60 sec to practice
Summarize a Problem In the FIFTH TASK, listen to a conversation about a
campus related situation The question asks you to Describe the problem being discussed State which of the two solutions you prefer Explain why you choose that option Justify it basing on what speaker said/ your
experience
Solution Try to understand common problems of college/
university Focus on problem, ideas and solution Infer speaker’s attitude, opinion or intention Take notes and review it to form your opinion

Speaking Strategies Essential Tips
Tips for Effective Speaking Try to make recording of your own speaking and
play it back to evaluate it. Ask yourself these questions: Did I speak clearly?
Did I make grammatical errors? Did I use words correctly? Focus on university textbooks/ internet/ other
materials that cover a variety of areas, such as science, arts, social sciences and business.
Follow the Structure When practicing pay attention to
natural speaking patterns. pronunciation & stress, intonation patterns & pauses.
For independent tasks:
Describe a familiar place. Recount a personal experience & State a personal opinion
Follow the Structure Because Task Five asks you to summarize problem,
use the modals "can," "could," and "should" in your answers. For example:
Instead of saying: "The man wants the woman to buy a new car." you can say, "The man thinks that the woman should buy a new car."
