INTER NATIONAL ARCHITECTS ATELIER Kansas City-based International Architects Atelier was founded in 1988. Since then, our practice has grown and evolved - but, to be sure, not at the expense of the convictions on which it was founded. IAA’s rich creative expression takes cues from a wealth of influences, including the fusion of our principals’ international backgrounds with their adopted Midwest culture. Our centralized location in an energized and revitalized downtown KC inspires our team on a daily basis. We are committed to designing distinct and engaging environments reflecting both our area’s urban roots, as well as its future ambitions.

STRIKING A BALANCE PRESERVATION and INNOVATION

Today, there is a growing appreciation for the authenticity and craftsmanship of generations past, and a call for honest and responsible practices. IAA has made a point over our nearly thirty-year history to be our clients’, and our community’s, biggest advocate. A significant portion of our portfolio encompasses historic preservation work throughout the region. We understand the physical intricacies of aged structures. Not only that, we understand the cultural significance of their revival and future longevity. The social and economical implications of salvaging urban landmarks versus letting them perish are profound. As an example, the transformation of the neglected Robert A. Long residence (1909) into the Kansas City Museum is continuing to positively affect the surrounding area’s image, housing market, and overall rebirth into a creative hub. Similar projects throughout the urban core are infusing KC with an energy and buzz that is hard to resist. That “buzz” is what has ignited an entrepreneurial force driving the area’s emergence as one of the country’s best places to be. IAA’s team of designers collaborate and strategize in conceiving increasingly integrated and forward-thinking built environments. Whether due to a plane taking off from a rooftop, or achieving LEED certification, we view each new project as an opportunity to exceed expectations, and improve upon the status quo.

Two distinctly different Kansas City landmarks. Since 1996, IAA has been involved in the restoration of the Kansas City Museum (left), located in the Scarritt Renaissance neighborhood in the historic Northeast area. In 2008, IAA was part of a team that completed extensive renovations on Bartle Hall (above), Kansas City’s downtown convention center.

LIVING The American Dream is in the midst of a makeover. Baby Boomers to Millenials are rethinking what it means to live large, and in many cases, that’s quality over quantity. Young adults are eager to engage with their communities, and others hitting retirement don’t want a sprawling estate to tie them down. Multifamily residences are becoming an increasingly attractive option for a growing and diverse group. IAA has designed market-rate apartments to luxury lofts, and for each, our dedication to sound craftsmanship translates into environments that feel like home.

DINING Good food is big during a night out, but why stop there? Let’s make an experience. We design casual dining spaces that are open and fluid, allowing people to watch the chef prepare their meal. Posh cafÊs and restaurants provide an evening defined by dramatic elements further enlivened with integrated arts and graphics all in the spirit of fine cuisine - one art inspired by the other. Sharing a meal, or simply a cup of coffee, becomes a moment to enjoy the grub and the view.

RETAIL Would you buy a car without a test drive? No [We hope]. Although most purchases are less significant, the customer still cares. In designing each retail space, we are inspired by the product on the shelves. We communicate a vision, express an identity, and establish a brand. Clear, interactive displays guide customers through stores and gift shops, and help them to envision owning the product at their fingertips.

WORKPLACE Collaborate. Conversate. Innovate. Today’s workplace is reimagined. Managers want their employee to be inspired, but that can be a lot to ask when you place him in a non-descript cubicle working at a coffee-stained desk from the guy before. IAA’s workplaces are fresh. They’re flexible and open, encouraging organic discussion and the spontaneous exchange of ideas. The fusion of comfortable work stations with communal spaces provides variety and maximizes opportunity, all cultivating a culture of productivity, team engagement, and that next big idea...

ADAPTIVE REUSE You know the saying - why fix it if it ain’t broken? Well... these spaces are broken. So, we’re fixing them. Adapting rather than abandoning is important not only from an environmental standpoint, but a cultural one as well. The dynamic energy and thinking that results from close proximity and interdisciplinary spaces within cities can be difficult to replicate with urban sprawl. IAA is passionate about redefining old places, and conceptualizing their transformation for a new generation of users. Having to think outside an already-existing box pushes our team to imagine some of our most innovative designs.
