ICON SPEAKERS OVER THE YEARS
Dr B V Doshi, India
Pritzker 2018 (Nobel of Architecture)
India is diverse economically, socially, culturally and climatically. We need to stop talking about buildings and talk about a sense of community. That is what identity stems from.
Fumihiko Maki, Japan Pritzker 1993 Laureate
Time was able to give us the ability to reflect on what we had done and became the mediator between the city and its architecture.
Richard Meier, USA Pritzker 1984 Laureate
I think, any work of architecture that has, with it, some discussion, and some polemic, is good. It shows that people are interested and people are involved.
Late Charles Correa, India Padma Vibhushan, Padmashri , RIBA Gold Medal
Place represents that part of truth that belongs to architecture.
Toyo Ito, Japan
Pritzker 2013 Laureate
Despite being in a world dominated by Globalism, we should use new technology to create regionally unique architecture.
Peter Rich, South Africa
Building of the Year award at WAF
You cannot reinvent the wheel with architecture; it has all been done before.
Dr Cecil Balmond, UK Balmond Studio
Nothing is certain in nature, nothing is certain in what we do, we think we know what we do but we really don’t, at the bottom of it, are all assumptions.
Sir Peter Cook, UK
Royal Gold Medal of the RIBA
You have a germ of an idea, you fabricate it to a certain degree and then reconsider the idea and move it forward, a roll over between the dream and the reality and back again.
Patrik Schumacher, UK Zaha Hadid Architects
There is a chance for radical Avant Garde vision which can be materialised. An Avant Garde nucleus can anticipate the future and actually make it happen.
Massimiliano Fuksas, Italy Crystal Globe IAA Grand Prix 2015
Architecture is probably the easiest and simplest interpretation of art and culture.

THE CREATIVE THE INNOVATIVE THE RADICAL THE EXEMPLARY
“THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS ONE OF DEGREE.”
Be Engaged. Be Involved. Be a part of the Experience.
RETROSPECTIVE The Speakers, The Partners, The Associations These presentations also opened up some critical thinking within me, making me wonder what are we all doing as a profession? I wondered if, we as a profession, are not focused on beach houses and “second homes,” and neat little tourist sites, or are we facing the avalanche of urbanisation straight on. Will history push us aside as the court jesters of the rich and idle? While these are critical thoughts of our profession and my own work, they are not critical of reactions of your conference. Your conference laid out things in front of me that caused me to think! What better compliment could one pay of your efforts! – Prof. Christopher Charles Benninger, CCBA, Pune: 361° 2013
The 361 Degree Design Conference is aimed at initiating discussions to building resilient cities and communities. Resilience is an attribute that defines strength, adaptation and responses to growing challenges, immediate threats and long-term but looming adversities that humanity is faced with. Exploding population, scarcity of resources, global warming, terrorism, deforestation, growing population, etc. are hazards that hinder holistic upkeep of places and its people. To fight or survive is the need of the hour within cities and communities. It is increasingly imperative that humanity and urbanism be equipped with resources and systems to deal with shocks and stresses. The long term perspective of a robust built environment is an inevitable endeavor. Tracks: Design & Sustain Design Education

From digitally enhanced designs, to invisible architecture, to the latest 3-D Printed modules, the digital era is questioning the paradigm shift in the role of the Architect. The theme attempts to create discourses about the 'Architecture of the Future' which entails to realise experimental processes encouraging constant engagement as well as permanence. The conference intended to create a platform to allude that the ‘City’ transcends the discernible elements of concrete buildings and infrastructure, they also comprise of public spaces such as parks, squares, streets and alleys that are equally significant components which influence the everyday urban life. The conference attempted to highlight the urgent need to comprehend the role of the architecture as both an agent of change and a catalyst of survival to look at the micro and macro level issues of sustainable design towards the development of our cities.
Discourse entails intuition (hypothesis), analysis and establishment of syntax (structure). The evolution of architecture and architectural pedagogy builds on the works of others. Appraisals, refutations, criticism, judgements, comparisons, reflections, reviews and confrontations are all types of tests. The conference attempted to initiate a discourse on the methods of critical appraisal between eminent architects and critics.

The 2014 conference focused on people and practices whose fundamentals mediate the impact of these statements and have an investment in the idea of identity; whose work takes a critical position on this issue. The 361° Conference 2014 explored the issue of Architecture & Identity.
As communities continually negotiate their destiny in an increasingly global world, design becomes a reflection of the cultures architects create. In the haze of ‘isms’, the mania of the virtual and a landscape of failed utopias, the conference aimed to provoke and rethink the reason why architecture is relevant and what is relevant architecture? Icon lecturers such as Peter Rich and Charles Correa set the premise of discussion. An exhibition representing ‘Interpretations of Sustainability in the Indian Context’ was held concurrently and the film ‘Vistara’ was also screened.

With multiple ways and means, multilateral approaches and multidimensional practices, architects and designers in India, and the world, are venturing into unprecedented realms with an intense understanding of the new age. The conference attempted to understand and debate these versatile directions and the generated chaos as an ambigous whole guided by four tracks namely Systems & Technology, Objects & Experiences, Paracentric Practices and Innovating@Grassroots. Extensions of the Conference involved screening of the film ‘Doshi’ by Hundredhands and a bookstore by ANDBS.

Exploring alternative prospects of spatiality and integration of concerns such as economy, functionality, informality in urban fabric and typology, the fourth edition of the Conference concentrated on serious aspects of informal settlements and its scope of improvisation or expansion. To understand the implications of the issues, the discussants participated in a walk through Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum. An icon lecture by Pritzker Laureate Richard Meier concluded the conference.
I just wanted to thank you for a fantastic conference and I hope you will keep me advised of all your upcoming events meanwhile.
