A Review of a Real, Functioning SDI/IP Hybrid Facility Dave Schwarz Managing Engineer Diversified

Introduction Diversified is an industry leader in the design and installa8on of a broad spectrum of custom engineered and integrated audiovisual media delivery solu8ons. They specialize in the use of audiovisual technology for complex and scalable professional broadcast, corporate communica8ons and digital signage networks providing businesses with the enhanced capability of crea8ng, managing and mone8zing original digital content. Dave Schwarz has been in television for nearly 40 years. He has worked as grip, audio engineer, TD, editor, and engineer. He started specializing in broadcast engineering over 20 years ago. Some of Dave’s recent projects include: United Na8ons Headquarters, New York, Al Jazeera Washington, DC Bureau and AP Headquarters, New York. Dave has designed or consulted on several IP rou8ng systems. He’s currently working on the design of the New York offices of a major news organiza8on. Although this project will not be his first IP-‐based video router, it will be his first one that will be based on SMPTE ST-‐2110.

A Little Background Info •  The Associated Press was moving their headquarters from midtown to downtown ManhaYan. •  As a 24/7 news provider, the move had to be without interrup8on of newsgathering or supply to subscribers. •  It was clear to the AP’s management that the industry was headed down the IP path.

Why IP? •  The AP wanted to “dip a toe” in the IP waters. •  The New York facility would be a proof-‐of-‐concept system •  Lessons would be learned for next facility. The expecta8on is that the next build MUST be full IP.

•  IP is resolu8on/frame rate independent. •  Future formats would be routable.

•  IP infrastructure is extensible. •  More and more devices were na8ve IP connected.

Why IP? •  Geographic spread •  The facility is in a New York office tower. •  Edi8ng, shoo8ng posi8ons, a studio, and the newsroom are on the 5th floor. •  The broadcast core, MCR, studios, control rooms and equipment room are on the 18th floor. •  Administra8ve offices and large mee8ng/presenta8on spaces are on the 19th and 20th floors.

•  An IP system would allow for distributed rou8ng.

Why SDI? •  Facility design started in December, 2015 •  In 2015, a 24/7/365 all IP facility was a liYle scary.

•  SDI is proven. •  All of the live inbound and outbound feeds were handed off as SDI. •  Real8me compressed feeds were delivered in formats that were not directly compa8ble with any standards for SVIP (Studio Video over IP). •  The devices that supplied the real8me compressed feeds all had SDI I/O.

Why SDI? •  The AP has to be able to receive and ingest every frame rate and format of video imaginable. •  There was plenty of conversion equipment available, from a variety of vendors, with BNCs on the back. Only a few products had IP I/O.

•  Decommissioned gear, from the old facility, could be reused.

How to Hybrid the System? •  Op8ons •  Facility I/O as SDI and core as IP •  Facility core as SDI with IP islands
