DES I G N D I A R Y
BY B E C K Y W HI TE
INITIAL T H O U G H T S On our first visit to the site in the City of London I made this mindmap of thoughts and research about the site. My initial interest was the barbican area and the brutualist architecture of the estate and centre. I also did overall research of the City of London to undercover communnitys embedded within it.
EE QU N
ST RE ET
MA PP IN G I mapped CCTV within the City of London as I was originally focusing on a narrative involving a totalarian world, which may have included a strict society of big brother watching over the residents of City. I also did a noli plan highlighting the public and private spaces within the City.
Architecture surrounding the site
COMMUNITY 1 L I V E R Y C O M P A NIES My first community of research was the Livery Companies, a majority of which are based in London and the City but some outside of London. I made three maps showing where the Livery Companies are situated and if they own a Livery Hall. I used their emblem to identify each company.
Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants Worshipful Company of Musicians
Worshipful Company of Carpenters

LIVERY MASTERS
Worshipful Company of Glaziers, Launderers & Scientific Instrument makers 1808
After researching into the Livery Companies, I narrowed my research down to the present 40 Companies within the city. I chose to focus on the Livery Masters to gain a sense of character from each Company. I emailed all of the clerks for each of the 40 companies, explaining my project and asking for any information they could give to me about their Master. I have represented this information into a graphical timeline of the dates the Livery halls were built.

Inbox Dear Rebecca, Many thanks for your email. We have a charitable committee taking place in mid-January where all requests for educational help are considered. I will submit this request to them at that meeting. Unfortunately, we do not make decisions in between meetings. In the interim I would suggest taking a look at our website as there is a biography on our Master located there. Kind Regards, Eleanor

Dear Becky, Thank you for your email, what an interesting subject and project. You mention about information regarding our Master Skinner. Are you after a generic description or specifically about the current Master. As you may or may not know they change each year and are from a variety of backgrounds, as are all our members, varying from Education, Banking, Farming, Forces personnel, Engineering and so the list goes on. They all bring something different to the table. Secondly you refer to designing a space for the Livery Master, I note you have chosen the Companies with Halls. Have you visited a Livery company and seen what goes on, if not perhaps you may wish to pop in and have a brief look round to get an idea of what goes on and what is required. Do let me know further what you wish to do, if it is just information than it is not a problem I can get a Bio put together for one of our masters for you. Ps I though the world was going to end on the 12th of the 12th 2012 or this that another belief. Regards Mervyn Bassett

Inbox Dear Rebecca Thank you for your email which the Clerk has passed on to me to answer. I am not sure of what you are trying to achieve but we have a profile of our present Prime Warden (Master) in the current issue of Goldsmiths’ Review. I can send a pdf of the article if you would like to read it. Our Prime Wardens, who serve for one year, come from varying backgrounds – some are silversmiths or jewellers or in the retail trade, others are from academia, business and the professions – in keeping with the broad range of interests in which the Goldsmiths’ Company is involved. Their involvement with the Goldsmiths’ Company can be just one of a number of institutions with which they are associated. In the governance of the Company the personal preferences of the Prime Warden may affect some of the policies which the Company undertakes but the Prime Warden is one of four Wardens and decisions are taken collectively. If you would like to visit the library to undertake further research do get back in touch. Perhaps you can acknowledge this email and let me know if you would like to receive the pdf about Lord Sutherland. With best wishes David Beasley

Dear Ms White, Thank you for your enquiry. I have a question and two observations. The question is: how are you connecetd to the Livery ‘movement’? The observation is that masters change each year and so, of course, do their characters. Therefore their characters must surely be irrelevant in your hypothesis because, as in real life, they fit happily into the existing space and facilities provided irrespective of the year or character. I am not sure either how the Mayan calendar comes into it. Their civilisation was a brutal one leading to more and more sacrifice in an effort to persuade the gods to relieve the drought they suffered from for so long, but which was caused not by the gods’ displeasure but by the failure of successive El Niños. If they got that wrong, I suspect they got their calendar predictions wrong too! Nevertheless, good luck! With kind regards, HPD Massey

Inbox Dear Becky I would hate to be a fly in the ointment - but Livery Masters are a very very mixed lot with hugely varying backgrounds/objectives/ associations etc. Perhaps it would be more relevant to focus on the Clerks to Livery Companies. They have the responsibility for being “the continuity and developing and forming the corporate ethos and image. Sincerely, Andrew Gillett

CO MM U N I T Y 2 P O S T WAR MODERN H O U S I NG ESTATES My second chosen community, located outside of the city are post war modern housing estates. I picked three to focus on, to understand the residents of these spaces. My original idea was of an apocalyptic world and one of these residencies would be chosen to survive. I researched into sex, age and education of these populations to establish who would be an ‘ideal’ community to survive.

PROGRAMME DIAGRAMS Still invloved in my inital narrative, I was looking to design a space to house the Livery Masters , who would run a new government within the city and give order and assign jobs to the residents. My inital program diagrams involved modularization of the Livery masters into smaller pods of interest and education. These were arranged into a circular system, similar to that of government bodies and old senates.

C A S E S TU DI ES SITE VISI T
SKINNERS L I V E R Y H A L L After communicating with the Skinners beadle, Mervyn Basset, he invited me to visit the Skinners Hall on Dowgate Hill. The visit was very impressive and informative. Not only did I learn a lot about the company and how it operates, I also learnt a lot about the interior decor, including materials, paintings and carpet.
ALEXANDRA ROAD HOUSING ESATE After the Livery Hall visit I popped over to Camden to visit Alexandra Road. It was quite an usual experience visiting two magnificent, but starkly different, architectural sites in one day. I briefly spoke to one of the residents there who I recognised from the film ‘One Below the Queen’, a film made by the residents. It was strangely quiet and deserted but beautiful also.
‘Pound for pound this is the most expensive building built by a Local council anywhere in the world... Everyone has a connection to the street’
1968 Designed by Neave Brown of Camden Councils Architects department
1969 Proposal appears in Architectural Design Journal
‘Good feeling about living here... You can feel proud of the area, one step below the Queen, that’s something big init’
1970 ‘Adaptable Planning’ article in Architects Journal
1972 Construction commenced
1976 Scenes of estate under construction in an episode of TV series ‘The Sweeney’
1976 ‘Shops, craft workshops and housing, Camden, London’ artcile in Architectural Review
‘My wife said it looks life Greece.. I felt it was like a fish bowl, I could see my neighbours, my neighbours could see me, but I liked the architecture’
1976 Deatiled article in Architects Journal, including technical details and construction details
1978 Construction completed
1979 ‘Cooks Camden’ article in RIBA Journal
‘It looked so bright and white.. it took your breath away.. Your so close to people you have to get on with them... I love concrete’
1979 ‘Housing, School and Community Centre’ article in Architectural Review
1980 RIBA Journal takes a look at Camdens Department of Architectures financial records
1981 Alexandra Road estate is investigated by National Building Agency
‘I just thought it was a really cool space.. They built wooden boards and poured loads of concrete into it and each board left a different imprint, it’s like building DNA’
1981 Defects in Alexandra Road are found to be worth nearly £1.25million in damage
1993 Given status of Grade II listed
‘It feels like an actual street as apposed to living in a high rise building... I really despise those brown tiles, I just think they’re really hideous’
1993 Architects Journal viw on the listing of Alexandra Road and widr implication

‘Pound for pound this is the most expensive building built by a Local council anywhere in the world... Everyone has a connection to the street’
‘So amazing.. so many different cultures of music floating in the air and I thought wow, how fantastic is this, it’s all here’
‘Good feeling about living here... You can feel proud of the area, one step below the Queen, that’s something big init’
‘I was awe-struck and just thought it was the most amazing place.. When we cleaned it about 12 years ago, we removed a patina of the concrete, it’s got dirtier‘
‘My wife said it looks life Greece.. I felt it was like a fish bowl, I could see my neighbours, my neighbours could see me, but I liked the architecture’
‘Daunting and frightening when you first walk on, until you get to know the estate... It’s all different colours, it’s not one nice white or grey, it’s a mixture’
‘It looked so bright and white.. it took your breath away.. Your so close to people you have to get on with them... I love concrete’
‘It felt like something from another planet.. Quite a limited amount of flats that have stairs access’
‘I just thought it was a really cool space.. They built wooden boards and poured loads of concrete into it and each board left a different imprint, it’s like building DNA’
‘Loved it, totally different, never seen anything like it in my life’
‘It feels like an actual street as apposed to living in a high rise building... I really despise those brown tiles, I just think they’re really hideous’
‘The estate is very closed in, door to door, very close together so you can’t really leave your house without bumping into a neighbour’
‘We are very close together, I want it to be more out, so we have more space’
‘I think it’s good, because it’s such a long estate and it’s nice that’s there is two sides facing one another.. It draws people together’
‘People are constantly being defensive about how they treat their space, so they might fences or planting.. So you see defensive design’
‘Living here all these years, is like living next to a waterfall, you don’t hear the trains.. I love it in the sunshine, I hate it in the rain’
‘There is a lot of space in Rowley and you think what is that’
‘The only negative part of the design I can think of is the car parking, the underneath space is just too open to abuse’
‘Well it is a stupid idea, here you have to go the stairs, then there’s a lift... You should have a lift from the bottom’
‘I love the concrete, I’ve always loved concrete’
‘It just looks dull... There are other times when it’s really hot and sunny and everybody’s one their patios, maybe having a drink... It looks really nice’
‘You are surrounded by a rather intricate, always shifting, number of shapes and angles as you negotiate your way through the estate’
‘At one time we had housing corp here and I thought it was one of the best times we had, in terms of managing this place’
‘It’s good to maintain it, I suppose it makes the council do things in a certain way, it does makes things more expensive I suppose’
‘He made it so that you walk round either way and you never come to a stop... IN a small space you do not want radiators, because it gets in the way of the furniture’
‘Because it’s open space, I think that’s good because it encourages you to sit around together, rather than being in separate rooms’
‘The red brick road seems never ending as you approach it’
‘The main one, that’s not used well, is the tenant Hall... because it’s a lovely big, open space building, it could be used for anything’
‘When you walk through it, and you walk up to the end you see them amble, don’t get in the way, no traffic, lovely’

From the research I absorbed from the resident made film ‘One Below the Queen’, and also from journals, architectural review, Architects Journal and RIBA journal, I have compiled a timeline of historic information regarding the modernist housing scheme. Below are the residents thoughts and opinions on their home. The film made me realise that the space I create for the residents should a space to preserve their photography and film, mainting the heritage of post war housing schemes.
‘I would love for Alexandra Road to use the social, cultural, activity mixed resources the were built into it and were part of the architectural idea’

C A S E S TU DI ES ALEXA N D R A v s S K I N N E RS From the notes I took on my visits and the information I learnt, I have made a comparative study on the two case studies, including social hierarchy, their spaces and textures and events that take place in these spaces. Fully appreciating these spaces will help me to design for the communities. For the tenants, I propose to focus on their Tenant Hall which Neave Brown designed as a place for the tenants to join together to create a sense of community. In my research this was one of the only housing estates I could find with this type of space. In 36 Queen Street I propose to create a cross programmed space of Livery Hall and Tenant Hall.

P R E C E D E NT S CONCEPT
D E SI GN INITI A L S K E T C H E S & MODEL S My first approach to the design of the Livery & Tenant hall was to make a temporal, transformable space, the same space that could be adapted to both communities. I highlighted the key elements that were essential to each community and then attempted different layouts and arrangements in order to fit the minimum requirements for each. As something that is quite theatrical I thought the space could act like a stage set, with moving walls and adjustable props, my first model shows this idea. I made a series of hanging walls on wire streched across a stage. The walls inherit an abstract pattern I assembled from the Livery Commpanies Hall facades.
P R E C E D E NT S MATERIA L
DESIGN SKETCHES These sketches show my development of ideas. I begun with the floor plan and broke down the elements of the minimum requiremtns for both the Livery and Tenant. I then drew different arrangement of the key elemnts into the space.
DESIGN LIVERY HALL I mapped CCTV within the City of London as I was originally focusing on a narrative involving a totalarian world , which may have included a strict society of big brother watching over the residents of City. I also did a noli plan highlighting the public and private spaces within the City.

I also did a noli plan highlighting the public and private spaces within the City.
MODEL I created this model to show my concept and the spatial arrangement. I used double sided cardboard to highlight the change in space, black representing the Livery and white the residents. As the model shows a transformable space, I thought it would explain my concept clearly by utilising the model in a stop frame animation.

P R E C E D E NT S LIGHTIN G
L I G H T I NG INTERIOR P E R S P E C T I V E For the lighting of my space I chose to focus on several types of lighting. As a main design element I created a series of hanging bulbs on a track. During the Tenant use, the lights are spaced out along the space of the corridor. During Livery use, the lights can then be dragged along the track into a circular track to represent a chandelier, common in Livery Halls. This system will be adjustable in brightness, enabling a dimming setting when the lights are closely bunched together. I also want to include some whiter task lights as a spotlight on the work.
D E TA IL IN G LI V E R Y For the central ambient lighting, I designed a track of brass fittings that hang together in a chandelier style whilst in use by the Livery Companies.

D E T AI LI NG LIG H T I N G As the diagram below shows, the lights can be adjusted to suit the use of the hall. The lights run along a track which when drawn apart for spaced lights are made brighter, when in use by the tenants. When both the tracks are drawn in, the lights are dimmed down and circle into tiers to mimic a chandelier.

D E T AI LI NG PIV O T P A N E L This diagram explains the multifunctional design element I created in order to divide the space. It works in several ways. For the tenants use, it works as an exhibtion wall. Then rotated and the inner table pulled down, these panels join together to create a banquet table for the Livery Masters to dine at.
LIGHTIN G P L A N I have attempted to highlight the brightness and dimness of light in each phase of my proposal. Also I have tried to show cooler and warmer lights for different purposes.
