The City of Osaka will be host to four IAFOR conferences taking place in Japan next spring during the cherry blossom season From late March to early April, cherry blossoms go into full bloom all over Japan. The cherry blossom is Japan’s unofficial national flower and there are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan. However, the cherry blossom season is relatively short and most varieties of cherry tree only blossom for a few weeks at most in spring. Full bloom is usually reached within about a week after the opening of the first blossoms. Within a week after full-bloom, blossoms start to fall from the trees and a rainfall can bring the sea of pink crashing to the ground. Osaka is centrally located in Japan, and enjoys easy access to the country’s most famous historical sights in nearby Kyoto and Nara. It has its own international airport and a bullet train can whisk you to Tokyo in just over two hours. Thursday March 27 - Sunday March 30, 2014 ACP 2014 - The Fourth Asian Conference on Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences will be held alongside ACERP 2014 - the Fourth Asian Conference on Ethics, Religion and Philosophy. Registration for either conference will allow attendees the option of attending sessions in the other. The paper submission deadline for these two conferences is December1, 2013. Thursday April 3 - Sunday April 6, 2014 ACAH2014 - the Fifth Asian Conference on the Arts and Humanities, will be held alongside LibraAsia 2014 - the Fourth Asian Literature and Librarianship. Registrants to either event will have the option of attending parallel sessions in the other for no extra ch arge. The paper submission deadline for these two conferences is December1, 2013. All of these events will be held at the Osaka International Conference Center, and the adjoining Rihga Royal Hotel, the designated conference hotel. The Rihga Royal Hotel is Osaka’s largest hotel, with a wide range of amenities, and its own entrance to the subway station situated below. Situated in the Nakanojima area of Osaka, the hotel is quietly located but just a short shuttle bus ride away from the bustling Osaka station area, with its thousands of bars and restaurants, and easy connections with nearby Kyoto, Kobe and Nara.

About the Featured Speakers ACSEE/ACSS 2014 Conference Co-Chair & Featured Speaker Reverend Professor Stuart Picken, Chairman of the IAFOR IAB Stuart D. B. Picken is the founding chairman of the IAFOR International Advisory Board. The author of a dozen books and over 130 articles and papers, he is considered one of the foremost scholars on Japan, China, and Globalization in East Asia. As an academic, Professor Picken has devoted more than 30 years to scholarship in Japan, notably as a professor at the International Christian University in Tokyo, where he specialized in ethics and Japanese thought, and as International Adviser to the High Priest of Tsubaki Grand Shrine (Mie prefecture). He has also served as a consultant to various businesses, including Jun Ashida Ltd., Mitsui Mining & Smelting Corp., Kobe Steel, and Japan Air Lines. In November 2008, the Government of Japan awarded Professor Picken the Order of the Sacred Treasure for his pioneering research, and outstanding contribution to the promotion of friendship and mutual understanding between Japan and the UK. The honour is normally reserved for Japanese citizens and is a mark of the utmost respect in which Professor Picken is held by the Japanese Government. Although now resident in Scotland, Professor Picken maintains his interests in Japan, as Chair of the Japan Society of Scotland, and through his work with IAFOR. A fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, he lives near Glasgow with his wife and two children.

ACSEE/ACSS Featured Speakers (continued) ACSEE/ACSS 2014 Featured Speaker Mr Lowell Sheppard, HOPE International Development Agency Lowell Sheppard is Asia Pacific Director of the HOPE International Development Agency, an organization focused on working with the world’s extreme poor in their quest to climb out of poverty. Aside from his 25-year involvement with Hope, Lowell has dedicated much of his life to social and environmental improvement projects throughout the world. He was the chairman of the Whose Earth initiative in the United Kingdom, and was the founding chairman of Novimost, a non-government organization responding to the needs caused by war in the Balkans. He was also CEO of one of the United Kingdom’s largest youth charities and an executive member of Spring Harvest, an annual Christian festival which attracts more than 60,000 people each Easter, and raises more than one million dollars for charities every year. A fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, Mr Sheppard is the author of six books, which reflect his diverse intellectual interests, and life experience. His latest book, Boys Becoming Men, examines the importance of rites of passage, including adventures, for children becoming adults. Lowell is a noted public speaker, and has given lectures at both undergraduate and postgraduate level on Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability, and he is a former vice-chairman of the CSR Committee for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan.

ACSEE/ACSS Featured Speakers (continued) ACSEE/ACSS 2014 Featured Speaker Professor Jay Friedlander, College of the Atlantic, USA Jay Friedlander is the Sharpe-McNally Chair of Green and Socially Responsible Business at College of the Atlantic (COA) in Bar Harbor, Maine and founder of COA’s Sustainable Business Program. Fast Company, Princeton Review, The New York Times and others have recognized COA as a sustainability leader. Jay has been a frequent presenter at both national and international academic conferences on sustainability, enterprise and innovation, as well as to private sector gatherings such as the Yale-Goldman Sachs Partnership on Nonprofit Ventures. Prior to joining COA, Jay was the chief operating officer for a natural and organic restaurant group; worked as a Fortune 100 strategy consultant; served in the Peace Corps in Mauritania; and broke fundraising records at Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. Jay holds a BA from Colgate University and an MBA from Babson College, where he graduated as Valedictorian of his class.

Baden Offord - Southern Cross University, Australia (center) ACAS/ACCS 2014 Featured Speaker & Conference Co-Chair Born in Aotearoa/NZ of Maori and Pakeha heritage, Dr Baden Offord is Professor of Cultural Studies and Human Rights in the School of Arts and Social Sciences and Co-Director of the Centre for Peace and Social Justice at Southern Cross University, Australia. He was educated at The University of Sydney, Australian National University and Southern Cross University. Donald E. Hall Z (right), Herbert J. & Ann L. Siegel Dean, Lehigh University, USA ACCS/ACAS 2014 Featured Speaker Donald E. Hall has published widely in the fields of British studies, gender theory, cultural studies, and professional studies. His current and forthcoming work examines issues such as professional responsibility and academic communitybuilding, the dialogics of social change and ethical intellectualism, and the Victorian (and our continuing) interest in the deployment of instrumental agency over our social, vocational, and sexual selves. He continues to lecture worldwide on the value of a liberal arts education and the need for nurturing global competencies in students and interdisciplinary dialogue in and beyond the classroom.

IAFOR Head Office News
Over the summer, the IAFOR Head Office has welcomed three new staff members and said farewell to Ms Miho Tanaka. Ms Virpi Helena Silvennoinen - Assistant Coordinator: Administration & Finance Virpi has a BBA degree in Modern Languages and Business Studies for Management Assistants from HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences, Finland. Her studies included a half-year exchange program in EDHEC Business School in France and a half-year training as a Secretary at Finnish Security Intelligence Service. Her common passions for both Japan and languages brought her to Nagoya to study Japanese. Helena joined IAFOR soon after finishing her one and a half year Japanese language course at the Trident College of Languages and Hotel Studies. Her duties include assisting in finances and general administration. Mr Bryce Platt - Technology Coordinator After growing up in the Silicon Valley in California, Bryce graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College (Saint Peter, Minnesota) with a degree in sociology. The next year he earned a masters in Global Communication from Japan’s own Akita International University. Over the years he has served as a beta tester for many Apple and Google products. His first academic conference was the Asian conference on Business and Management by IAFOR. Now three years later, he is the Technology Coordinator for IAFOR. Bryce has nearly 11 years experience working in IT departments of various schools and universities. Ms Shion Kajikawa - Administrative Assistant Shion joined IAFOR after graduating from a web design institute in Nagoya, Japan. Building on her experience as an administrative assistant, Shion assists the Events and Marketing team in administration and supports the Domestic Relations team in promoting IAFOR within Japan. Her interests include traveling and communicating with people from different backgrounds.
Other News Call For Papers: The First International Conference of the Australian Studies Association of Japan The Australian Studies Association of Japan (ASAJ) have announced the dates for their first international conference titled, “Transformation of Australian Studies in a Globalising Age�. The conference will be held on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27, 2014 at in Japan at Sophia University, Tokyo. The purpose of this conference is to exchange perspectives, observations and ideas about Australian studies among scholars from a broad range of academic disciplines such as history, literature, cultural and media studies, politics and law from Australia and Japan as well as other countries, and then to conduct a comparative and inter-disciplinary analysis of the issues surrounding Australian studies in the globalising world. If you are interested in presenting at this conference, the deadline for abstract submissions is November 30, 2013.
