Welcome To
Hello and welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court and this performance of The Lonesome West. Here at The Court we are known for our big comedy plays but every year we look to do something a little bit different – so here is Lonesome West. It is still a comedy, but the humour is darker than you would find in our usual programme of shows. Martin McDonagh, the writer of the piece, is probably best known for the hit film In Bruges which he wrote and directed. He also wrote the film Seven Psychopaths, starring Colin Farrell and Woody Harrelson, and has got a new film coming out this year called Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. He is a massive name in Hollywood and it’s a real pleasure to be producing his work here for the first time. There are quite a few firsts involved in this show. The Director, Bob Farquhar, is new to us here but I have always been a big fan of his work when I have seen it at other theatres. He is a talented writer as well as a director and watching rehearsals has been a pleasure. He pulls together every aspect of the show and it is like watching a great conductor at work. We have two actors making their Royal Court debuts too. Alan Devally made a real impression at auditions and has
shown how good he is in rehearsals and Anne O’Riordan has leapt at the role of Girleen, pulling out all of the stops to make her funny, likeable but a little vulnerable too. The other half of the cast have been here before. You might remember Kieran from The Flags or Our Day Out and it’s great to have him back with us. Paul Duckworth of course is one of our regulars and he is excellent in everything that we find for him. As well as the cast, I need to say what a great job Olivia DuMonceau has done in creating the set. After this play finishes we will be shutting down for a couple of months for the next phase of our refurbishment. But don’t worry, if you are missing us we will be producing a great new comedy called Omnibus up at The Unity Theatre. The play won The Hope Playwriting Prize a couple of years ago and we can’t wait to get that one started. Also look out for the Courtyard opening in June. What used to be the Penny Farthing will soon be an exciting addition to Liverpool’s food and drink offer. But back to tonight. You are about to enter the world of Valene and Coleman. Packed full of poteen, priests and (a lack of) brotherly love. So sit back and let us take you across the water to Galway...

The Building The Theatre that you are sitting in is a Grade ll listed building. A magnificent example of one of the best theatres built in the Art Deco style and one of Liverpool’s most enduring and iconic buildings. Hopefully you’ve noticed that it has changed quite a lot in the last few years and we hope that you think it’s changed for the better. As well as the support each and every one of you shows when you donate through the £1 ticket levy when you buy your tickets, we’ve had a lot of help. We need to thank the Heritage Lottery Fund who supported Act l and the renovation of the auditorium. This kick-started our renovation programme back in 2011. Liverpool City Council and European Regional Development Fund cofunded Act ll in 2014 which resulted in our beautiful new foyer. Hopefully we’re about to embark on Act lll which will transform the basement into a new venue so we can put on even more shows for you to enjoy. It will also see the balcony levels upgraded to the same standard as the stalls and circle with new bars and toilets and better seating. You might also have noticed that the Penny Farthing has closed! This is because we have bought it and will open it as a bar/restaurant soon. We have plans to develop the site creating new spaces for our wonderful youth theatre and choir to work in, more dressing rooms and wardrobe facilities. Basically it will provide the facilities we need to bring you even bigger and better shows! Our huge thanks to you all for your continuing support throughout the year.
