Brochure 2016/17

The Building

0151 709 4321 royalcourttrust.org /royalcourttrust @royalcourttrust

The Court has been at the heart of Liverpool’s cultural life since 1826 when it was known as Cooke’s Amphitheatre of Arts. After a fire destroyed the original building, the theatre you know and love was built in 1938. Now, nearly 200 years after the first performance, the theatre has been transformed, modernised and renovated for future generations to enjoy. Thank you for sticking with us through the days of dust, din and dirt but now we’ve emerged clean and shiny and ready for the final stage of work. We are now raising funds for 2017 to finish the theatre with Act lll. This will: • Create a basement venue seating 150 cabaret-style with a whole new programme of shows, events and activities • Finish public areas on the third and fourth floor with new toilets and bar facilities • Create a new entrance to the balcony with larger, comfy seating to make the balcony a great place to see shows from • Upgrade and improve backstage facilities for actors and technical staff with new dressing rooms

Watch out for The Courtyard too – we are developing the old Penny Farthing Pub so you can enjoy a drink and a meal there before and after the show. A huge thank you to everyone who has bought tickets to see a show here over the last eight years, £1 from every ticket sold helps us make the theatre better and we’ve managed to invest over £4 million to date. You have helped us to create this wonderful theatre. We couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you.

• Renew stage equipment and lighting to make shows even better • Reinstate the theatre’s 9m revolving stage • Upgrade the ventilation and heating The new basement venue should be ready for early 2018 and we’ll make sure that the work takes place with as little disruption to our programme as possible. Full plans will be available on the website later in the year.

Gillian Miller Chief Executive Liverpool’s Royal Court

Welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court Gillian has spoken about how the money will be spent on the previous page. These works will not only make a visit to the Court more comfortable and therefore more enjoyable, they will also make us more attractive to some of the best touring shows in the country. Hi and thank you for picking up our latest brochure for 2016-17 2015-16 has been a great year for us. As well as completing a successful refurbishment of our foyer and circle areas we’ve been on a great run of wellattended shows and the future is looking to be just as bright. The Foyer, our welcome centre, is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm serving homemade cakes and great tea and coffee. However, there is some good and not so good news for 2017. The not so good is that we are scheduled to close from 21 May for three months. The good news is we are planning to carry out the last part of our refurbishment programme. We have applied to the Arts Council for funding to match the money we have borrowed from Liverpool City Council and we will know about this in December.

We are already talking to several producers about how we can bring work to the Court that has been passing Liverpool by because the city did not have a venue of the right size and in a good enough condition. And if that wasn’t enough we have purchased the Penny Farthing pub and are currently working to get it open for Christmas as a bar and restaurant to be proud of. No longer will visitors arriving at Lime Street Station be greeted by a scene reminiscent of a zombie horror movie! You’ll probably know that the Royal Court is Liverpool’s biggest and busiest full-time producing theatre. We couldn’t do what we do without the support of you, our audience. Thank you.

Kevin Fearon Executive Producer Liverpool’s Royal Court

A Night At The Court So what makes the Royal Court different to your average theatre? Quite a lot really. We’ve always thought that people should be able to come for a great night out. Have a nice meal, chat with friends, watch a really entertaining show and grab a drink with the cast afterwards. When we took over at The Court in 2005 the first thing we did was fit a great kitchen and employ one of the best chefs in town. Our unique seating layout means that stalls bookers can eat in the same seats that they watch the show from then have a dessert during the interval. Have a look at our menu opposite. We can deal with any size group so whether it is a date night or a works do you’ll fit right in. If you’ve not been before then come and try us out. If you have been before then you won’t need telling twice!

TWOPENCE TO CROSS THE MERSEY 20 September to 8 October

Tickets from £16

The smash hit stage play adaptation of Helen Forrester’s Twopence To Cross The Mersey is coming to Liverpool’s Royal Court for the first time following a hugely successful tour in 2015. This much loved account tells the true story of a young girl and her formerly wealthy family as they are suddenly thrown into poverty during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Leaving behind the nannies, servants and comfortable middle-class life in the South West of England, they uproot their shattered lives and choose Liverpool as the city to restart and rebuild their dreams and fortune. Unbeknown to them however, they are in for a terrible shock. Loved by millions, see Helen’s dramatic, moving and heart-warming tale come to life as she and her family are forced to survive in the slums amongst the streetwise working class.

FATHER O’FLAHERTY

SAVES OUR SOULS 14 October to 12 November 2016

Tickets from £13

Everybody’s favourite priest is back and this time he’s got his own show! Father O’Flaherty (Merry Ding Dong, Scouse Pacific, Mam I’m ’Ere) has been a priest for as long as he can remember. He can’t remember much anymore but he’s pretty sure it’s been a while. He’s a maverick who doesn’t play by the rules, which is OK if you are a New York cop but it’s kind of frowned upon by the Church. The Bishop has had reports of his behaviour and wants him out. He’s in tonight so this is the good Father’s last chance to prove that he is worthy of his exalted place. Join us in the congregation as he delivers his finest, and possibly final, mass.
