Chief Executive
I will never forget how this show came about. It was at the guest night
Liverpoool’s Royal Court
of Shed, a great show written by two of our regular male cast, and Lindzi came and collared me by the bar. She asked me why we hadn’t produced a show written by one of the many talented women who work here. I said that if she wrote one then we would. A couple of months later and after a lot of hard work by Lindzi and her co-writer Angela, we were looking at draft one and it was on sale! We managed to snare the brilliant director, Cal McCrystal. Cal finds comedy in almost any situation so we knew that this project was right up his street. Since then he has been working in London and Hollywood as well as directing the incredible Gifford’s Circus. We are delighted to have him back here with us. As well as writing the show, Lindzi and Angela are starring in it alongside familiar Royal Court faces Lynn Francis (Mam I’m ‘Ere!), Danny O’Brien (Pharaoh ’Cross The Mersey) and Alan Stocks (Father O’Flaherty Saves Our Souls). Also, there is a Royal Court acting debut for Joe MatthewMorris who has written a new show we will be presenting in the Studio later this year. Talented young man. I think all of us have always had immense pride in the NHS but I think that these last two years have made us love them a little bit more. The response of those charged with our care on the front line of the pandemic has left us speechless and full of respect and admiration. We would like to dedicate this run of The Royal to them, a recognition of their hard work and commitment when we all needed them most. We have given a performance to them via the Liverpool University Hospitals

Returning To The Royal
A Q&A with Lindzi Germain and Angela Simms, the stars and writers of The Royal
got their own mad little stories. Angela Simms: I think the level of special effects in this show is something quite different than any other show that we’ve had on because its massive! It’s like a big action movie and it is really special to witness it. It’s very impressive!
What can the audience expect from the show? Lindzi Germain: They can expect two hours of escape, of having a laugh and forgetting about their worries. Everyone’s got a story about the Royal, or they’ve worked there, or know someone who has worked there, or they’ve been a patient, or a visitor. So, everyone’s

How important was it to get the original cast back together? Lindzi: It was mega important that we got everyone back and we’ve got Joe (MatthewMorris, playing Mrs Llwellyen) this year, it’s good fun! Angela: We’re glad everyone’s back, they’re so familiar with the show. It is so technical and it’s not easy so getting it ready has been brilliant. Have you had to change a lot since the last show in 2017? Angela: Some cultural references but aside from that it’s so physical that it’s universally funny, so we haven’t had to change a great deal script wise. What would you say to someone who wants to write a play for the Royal Court? Angela: The Royal Court it is probably the premier theatre in the city in terms of developing new work. They have a writing programme called Stage Write - a lot of those plays have been showcased in the Studio. Joe actually was on the Stage Write programme last year and his play Offered Up is on in the Studio this summer, so the Royal Court give people excellent opportunities. If you’ve got an idea, you’re not entirely sure how to develop it, get on the Stage Write programme. Don’t leave it in your head - write it down! What’s the worst that can happen? What do you think makes the show connect with the audience? Lindzi: I think people connect with it because you know The Royal hospital is just part of our city. When you speak to nurses, every nurse will say to you how they trained there or they work there or they know someone working there, it’s just such a massive part of every single family’s life. If you haven’t been a patient, you’ve been a visitor or you’ve
How have rehearsals been and is it fun working with Cal (McCrystal, director)? Lindzi: Cal McCrystal is amazing. I was jumping for joy when we got him last time and to get him back again was just unbelievable, but he said there was no way he wasn’t going to come back. Angela: He just sees things that other people don’t see. If there’s a joke to be had, Cal will find it. He’s brilliant! Lindzi: He put something in the other day and he said, ‘I heard about this 30 years ago and I’ve always wanted to get it in a show and I’ve never been able to find a space, this is the space for it’. He’s hilarious.

Talent Development
Liverpool’s Royal Court continues on its journey to work towards talent development across the city
Maurice Bessman
Music Access All Areas
Boisterous Stage Write
There is no doubt Liverpool is renowned for its wealth of talent but we, along with the rest of our city’s theatre organisations and institutions, recognise we need to do more to ensure we are accessible, engaging and aspirational if we are to be truly representative and inclusive of the communities we serve. It is a long-term continuing process and funding is key as is working together with the theatres across the region. Over the past three years we have laid down the foundations, initiating our plans for meaningful and real change. This includes the theatre’s programming, engagement, accessibility and relationships with artistes, communities, creatives, individuals, institutions, organisations, Schools/FE. We are working towards ensuring our talent development programmes are applicable, realistic and robust. Listening and engaging in the first instance to a wide cross section of creatives and communities – recognising and taking ownership of our failure to be fully inclusive and to take a proactive approach to ensure there is inclusivity and diversity across the sector A brief look at a few of our talent development projects so far:
Community Music AAA (Access All Areas) is a partnership project together with three grassroots organisations: Positive Impact, Capoeira For All, and Catalyst performing arts supported by funding from Youth Music. Children and young people aged 6 – 25 can access free musical instruments, musical theatre, hip hop, dance, singing, drama and performance
Raw Talent Young people from our youth theatre continue to have access to auditions and employment opportunities – during the past 3 years, 6 young people have been cast in Terriers, written by Maurice Bessman touring to schools and venues across the country. More recently working with Fury films, 120 young people aged 15 – 25 from across the city took part in audition workshops for the film of Terriers at Fire Fit in South Liverpool, MYA’s Space in Bootle and The Vibe in Huyton. 8 young people will be working with the Director to support the script development.
Mentoring This is a pilot programme supported by PH Holt Trust and Curious Minds – eight mentors from the creative industries have been paired with mentees – providing support, guidance and shadowing opportunities in acting, marketing, production, directing, writing, set design, and music skills. This talent development initiative will support eight young black, asian and minority artistes and creatives develop their skills as they progress through the industry.
Programming Our Boisterous Theatre strand of programming brought us a main house production of Bouncers, in August and September introducing four new actors to the main house stage – and new audiences to the theatre. The Alternative Black Cabaret Showcase – now a regular bi-monthly show presenting some of the best black comedians and singers on the circuit and with a platform to showcase emerging and existing local talent. Co-production with Red Ladder in September/October, with a cast of professional actors and 20 members of our community choir. Stagewrite – our new writing classes/workshops to encourage and support new writers to develop their work to full production. We continue on our journey with a number of other talent development initiatives in progress as a matter of priority to ensure we remain accessible, adaptable and continually listen and learn. It will take time and investment and with your continuing support for all we do. We will make a difference.
