Welcome To
Hello and welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court and this performance of YNWA – Let’s Talk About Six, Baby. Here at the Court we are great promoters of new writing. The vast majority of our shows are written for the stage here or they are shows that are making a successful return. This is the best of both worlds, a show making a comeback that has also had a rewrite for 2022! When Nicky Allt originally wrote YNWA in 2011 the club and this theatre were very different places. From our point of view we were building an audience for our particular type of show while still working out the best way to look after audiences in a venue that needed a refit. Liverpool Football Club was reaching the end of the road with Rafa Benitez as the memory of Istanbul was beginning to fade. Now we are both seeing record attendances with stars in every position and a bright future in front of us.
Keast, Mark Moraghan, Daniel Ross and Lenny Wood. The three new signings, Lydia Morales-Scully, Spencer Butt and Matt Connor have been a great addition to the squad. Leading the team has been Howard Gray, a long-time friend of the theatre, whose tactical nous has made this show what it is. For a show that relies on music and light so much we are very lucky to have Kate Harvey and Ian Scott on board and, for this show in particular and vital in the modern game, the AV skills of Jamie Jenkin. So pre-season is over, the training has been tough but worthwhile. Sit back, relax and enjoy the big kick off!
The cast of YNWA will be familiar to you all with triumphant returns from Jake Abraham, Lindzi Germain, Ben Gladwin, Adam

The Management Brush up on your history with our comprehensive guide to the managers of Liverpool FC
Honest John McKenna met the founder of Liverpool Football Club John Houlding, who invited him to Anfield to watch his Everton team play. He remained with Houlding after Everton left Anfield for Goodison Park. Houlding was a major driving force for Liverpool throughout the early years and he used his connections to look for players in Glasgow. His team was known as the “Team of Macs” due to the number of players with “Mc” in their surname: Duncan McLean, James McBride, Malcolm McVean, Hugh McQueen, Matt McQueen, John McCartney, Bill McOwen and Joe McQue.
Acting as the club’s secretary, McKenna telegraphed the Football League asking for Liverpool to be admitted, but was denied entry by the Football Association. This refusal forced McKenna to guide Liverpool through the ranks of the Lancashire League on his own. Liverpool played their first game with an 8–0 win at Anfield against Higher Walton, with John Smith scoring the first competitive goal. After ending their first competitive season as champions, Liverpool were elected into the Football League, and played their first Football League match away to Middlesbrough Ironopolis on 2 September 1893, and won 2–0.
1896 - 1915 Tom Watson Watson moved to Liverpool in 1896. Liverpool’s longest-serving manager, during his nineteen years in charge he won the league on two occasions, in 1900–01 and 1905–06. Those were the first league titles in Liverpool history.
He therefore became the first manager to lead two different clubs to the League Championship after his success with Sunderland. There have been only three others since; Herbert Chapman, Brian Clough and Sir Kenny Dalglish. Watson also took Liverpool to their first FA Cup Final in 1914, which they lost 1–0 to Burnley.
1919 - 1923 David Ashworth
1923 - 1928 Matt McQueen
Ashworth was appointed manager of Liverpool and in his first season in charge he guided them to their second successive season in 4th place, eight points behind the Champions Burnley.
McQueen stepped into the managerial hot seat as a temporary measure in early 1923 when David Ashworth resigned. Not only did he see the club safely through to a successful defence of their First Division championship trophy, he stayed in the manager’s chair for five years even though he was nearly 60 years old at the time he was asked to take over. When McQueen took over the reins at Anfield he became the first former player to manage the club. Before he stood down, McQueen made one of Liverpool’s most significant signings, South African Gordon Hodgson, a prolific striker of the ball who would go on score nearly 250 senior goals for the club in fewer than 400 appearances.
1928 - 1936 George Patterson
1892 - 1896 John McKenna/W. E. Barclay
The following season, 1921/22, Ashworth led Liverpool to their third League Championship. The team were well on their way to a second successive Championship the following season, when in February 1923 Ashworth left the tabletopping side to return to Oldham, then at the bottom of the league. Oldham ended the season relegated, while Liverpool only won one of their last seven games, but still won the Championship by six points.
After a playing career spent mostly with Marine F.C., Patterson joined Liverpool in 1908 as assistant to Tom Watson. After a spell as club secretary, he replaced Matt McQueen as manager in 1928. However, he was not successful and resigned in 1936 citing ill health. He continued as club secretary.
1936 - 1951 George Kay Kay’s career as Liverpool manager started poorly, with only three wins and four draws from the first twelve matches. Results improved slightly as the season progressed and Liverpool finished Kay’s first season in charge in 18th place in Division 1. Despite the set-back of an opening day 1–6 defeat at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge, Liverpool finished the 1937–38 season comfortably in mid-table, with Alf Hanson top scorer on 14 league goals. In readiness for the next season, Kay snapped up young defender Bob Paisley on a free transfer from Bishop Auckland, as well as another future Liverpool legend Billy Liddell, but all their careers were then interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. After the war, the club took the unusual decision to tour the United States and Canada. It was Kay’s theory that the climate and diet in North America would be extremely beneficial to the players. The punishing schedule of 10 matches in less than a month meant that the Liverpool squad started the first post-war season in far better physical shape than many of their competitors. As the season reached its climax, the Reds were crowned champions of the Football League for a fifth time. It was George Kay’s finest moment as a football manager.
1951 - 1956 Don Welsh In 1954 Welsh became the first manager to guide Liverpool into relegation for over 50 years. Unfortunately, that day also saw Everton promoted back to the First Division. He had almost accomplished that feat the season before finishing 17th, and only a scrappy win over Chelsea on the last day of the season kept Liverpool up. After this relegation Liverpool would stay in the Second Division for eight more seasons. Liverpool came near to being promoted again in 1955–56, but Welsh would not be given another chance and was sacked as Liverpool manager in 1956. According to some who played under him, Welsh had an eccentric style.
1956 - 1959 Phil Taylor Upon his retirement in 1954 he joined the backroom staff as a coach. He became manager of Liverpool in 1956 when former manager Don Welsh was sacked after failing to gain promotion back to the 1st Division. Taylor took over the reins with a determination to put Liverpool back where
1959 - 1974 Bill Shankly Shankly brought success to Liverpool, gaining promotion to the First Division and winning three League Championships and the UEFA Cup. He laid foundations on which his successors Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan were able to build by winning seven league titles and four European Cups in the ten seasons after Shankly retired in 1974. A charismatic, iconic figure at the club, his oratory stirred the emotions of the fanbase. In 2019, 60 years after Shankly arrived at Liverpool, Tony Evans of The Independent wrote, “Shankly created the idea of Liverpool, transforming
they belonged, immediately signing Alan A’Court, Tommy Younger, and club legend Ronnie Moran who ended up spending five decades at Anfield. Taylor, however, failed to achieve what he set out to do, and after an unsteady start to the 1959/60 campaign he resigned, stating “The strain of trying to win promotion has proved too much. Taylor’s legacy to Liverpool was the back room team he assembled of Reuben Bennett, Joe Fagan and Bob Paisley.
the football club by emphasising the importance of the Kop and making supporters feel like participants.” Shankly took charge of Liverpool when they were in the Second Division and rebuilt the team into a major force in English and European football. He led Liverpool to the Second Division Championship to gain promotion to the top-flight First Division in 1962, before going on to win three First Division Championships, two FA Cups, four Charity Shields and one UEFA Cup. It was during Shankly’s reign the club changed to an all-red home strip, and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” became the club’s anthem.
1974 - 1983 Bob Paisley He spent almost 50 years with Liverpool and is regarded, due to his achievements with the club, as one of the greatest British managers of all time. Paisley is the first of three managers to have won the European Cup three times. He is also one of five managers to have won the English topflight championship as both a player and manager at the same club. He had been a player, the reserve team coach and club physiotherapist and was known as the tactician under Shankly’s leadership. He went on to lead Liverpool through a period of domestic and European dominance, winning twenty honours in nine seasons: six League Championships,
three League Cups, six Charity Shields, three European Cups, one UEFA Cup and one UEFA Super Cup. At the time of his retirement he had won the Manager of the Year Award a record six times.
1983 - 1985 Joe Fagan Joe was a coach and manager at Liverpool for twenty seven years under Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley. As a manager he was the first English manager to win three major trophies in a single season and is one of only four English managers to win the European cup. In his first season, Fagan achieved an unprecedented “treble” as Liverpool won the European Cup, the League Championship and the League Cup. Fagan was an uncomplicated man who believed in the simplicity of football, a devoted family man who preferred to just get on with his job and shun the limelight. He was one of the most respected figures in the game. He and his family lived in the same house not far from Anfield throughout his Liverpool career and afterwards.
1985 - 1991 Kenny Dalglish Liverpool’s finest ever player, Daglish became player/ manager and in his first season in charge in 1985–86, he guided the club to its first league and FA Cup double. Before the 1987–88 season, Dalglish signed two new players: striker Peter Beardsley from Newcastle and winger John Barnes from Watford. He had already purchased goalscorer John Aldridge from Oxford United and this new-look Liverpool side shaped by Dalglish topped the league for almost the entire season, and had a run of 37 matches unbeaten in all competitions. Liverpool were crowned champions with four games left to play. In the summer of 1988, Dalglish re-signed Ian Rush. Liverpool beat Everton 3–2 after extra time in the second all-Merseyside FA Cup final in 1989, but was deprived of a second Double in the final game of the season, when Arsenal secured a last-minute goal to take the title from Liverpool. In the 1989–90 season Liverpool won their third league title under Dalglish and at the end of the season Dalglish received his third Manager of the Year award.
1991 - 1994 Graeme Souness Souness took over at Anfield just before Liverpool surrendered their defence of the English league title to Arsenal. He made a major reorganisation of the squad in his first six months as manager, bringing in Dean Saunders for an English record of £2.9 million as well as defenders Mark Wright and Rob Jones and midfielder Mark Walters. He also gave a regular place in the team to 19-year-old midfielder Steve McManaman, whose debut had come under Dalglish in December 1990, and a debut to one of Dalglish’s last signings, teenage midfielder Jamie Redknapp. And at the end of that campaign, he gave a professional contract to 17-year-old striker Robbie Fowler. During the 1991–92 season, Liverpool rarely looked like serious title contenders, finishing sixth but won the FA Cup final against Sunderland. 1992–93 was an even more frustrating season for Souness. They entered March still only in 15th place, but an excellent final quarter of the season, in which Rush scored 11 Premier League goals, saw them finish sixth. Souness finally resigned as Liverpool manager at the end of January 1994 when Liverpool had suffered a shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Bristol City.
1994 - 1998 Roy Evans For the 1994–95 season, Evans strengthened his side with the addition of defenders John Scales and Phil Babb as well as young winger Mark Kennedy. He also gave further first-team opportunities to youngsters Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp and Robbie Fowler creating a team that played beautiful football all season long. He added Stan Collymore in 1995 and Patrick Berger in 1996 and together their swashbuckling style led to outstanding games but sadly just the 1995 League Cup in terms of silverware.
1998 - 2004 Gerard Houllier In July 1998, Houllier was invited to become joint team manager of Liverpool, together with Roy Evans. The arrangement did not work out and Evans resigned in November. Houllier began what he described as a five-year programme to rebuild the team, as well as begin a continental approach, both tactically and in terms of personnel. Players such as Sami Hyypiä, Dietmar Hamann, Stéphane Henchoz, Vladimír Šmicer and Sander Westerveld came in to augment the club’s youth players such as Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard. The rebuilding continued in 2000 with the signings of Markus Babbel, Emile Heskey and Gary McAllister. The efforts yielded an incredible 2000–01 season, when Liverpool won a cup treble of the League Cup, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup and finished third in the Premier League. In October 2001, after falling ill at halftime at Liverpool’s Premier League match with Leeds United, Houllier was rushed to hospital for an emergency operation due to the discovery of a heart condition. With the help of caretaker manager Phil Thompson, he guided Liverpool to a second-place finish in the 2001–02 FA Premier League season, at the time their best record in the Premiership. Houllier returned to active management of the club after five months, and continued to lead the way in the 2002/2003 season. In 2003/2004, having qualified the club for the following season’s Champions League, Houllier left Liverpool by mutual consent.
2004 - 2010 Rafael Benitez 2010 - 2011
On 16 June 2004, Benítez was appointed manager of Liverpool. One of his first tasks at Liverpool was to convince club captain Steven Gerrard not to move to Chelsea. His first season was marked by the incredible Champions League run that culminated in the miracle of Istanbul, coming from 3-0 down at half time to win the trophy on penalties.
Roy Hodgson
An FA Cup followed the next year along with improvements in the league with players like Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia and later Fernando Torres. After three years of battling Liverpool’s new owners, Gillette and Hicks, Rafa Benitez eventually left the club in 2010.
Roy Hodgson also managed Liverpool Football Club.
2011 - 2012 Kenny Dalglish
2012 - 2015 Brendan Rodgers
In April 2009 Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez invited Dalglish to take up a role at the club’s youth academy. Following Benítez’s departure from Liverpool in June 2010, Dalglish was asked to help find a replacement, and in July Fulham’s Roy Hodgson was appointed manager. A poor run of results at the start of the 2010–11 season led to Liverpool fans calling for Dalglish’s return as manager and he was appointed caretaker manager on 8 January 2011. Shortly after his appointment, Dalglish indicated he would like the job on a permanent basis if it was offered to him, and on 19 January he got his wish.
Brendan Rodgers brought a progressive passing style to Liverpool in 2012. His second season was his best with a Luis Suarez inspired front line leading Liverpool to second place in the Premier League, agonisingly missing out on the title following a run of 11-straight wins.
In February 2012, Dalglish led Liverpool to their first trophy in six years, with victory in the 2011–12 Football League Cup. Despite the success in domestic cups, Liverpool finished eighth in the league, and Daglish left the dugout to become non-executive director.
The following year Liverpool finished sixth in the league putting pressure on the manager to produce results. In autumn 2015, he succumbed to pressure and was sacked by the Liverpool board.
Liverpool scored 101 league goals in the season, the club’s most since the 1895–96 season and the thirdhighest in Premier League history and Rodgers was named the LMA Manager of the Year.
On 13 October 2017, Anfield’s Centenary Stand was officially renamed the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand in recognition of his unique contribution to the club.
2015 Jürgen Klopp On 8 October 2015, Jurgen Klopp agreed a three-year deal to become Liverpool manager. Fourth place in the league followed that season and since then Klopp has led Liverpool to Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League finals as well as League, League Cup, FA Cup, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup wins. With a new contract recently signed and world class players in every position, most Liverpool fans feel that this is just the beginning…

Talent Development
Liverpool’s Royal Court continues on its journey to work towards talent development across the city
Maurice Bessman
Music Access All Areas
Boisterous Stage Write
There is no doubt Liverpool is renowned for its wealth of talent but we, along with the rest of our city’s theatre organisations and institutions, recognise we need to do more to ensure we are accessible, engaging and aspirational if we are to be truly representative and inclusive of the communities we serve. It is a long-term continuing process and funding is key as is working together with the theatres across the region. Over the past three years we have laid down the foundations, initiating our plans for meaningful and real change. This includes the theatre’s programming, engagement, accessibility and relationships with artistes, communities, creatives, individuals, institutions, organisations, Schools/FE. We are working towards ensuring our talent development programmes are applicable, realistic and robust. Listening and engaging in the first instance to a wide cross section of creatives and communities – recognising and taking ownership of our failure to be fully inclusive and to take a proactive approach to ensure there is inclusivity and diversity across the sector A brief look at a few of our talent development projects so far:
Community Music AAA (Access All Areas) is a partnership project together with three grassroots organisations: Positive Impact, Capoeira For All, and Catalyst performing arts supported by funding from Youth Music. Children and young people aged 6 – 25 can access free musical instruments, musical theatre, hip hop, dance, singing, drama and performance
Raw Talent Young people from our youth theatre continue to have access to auditions and employment opportunities – during the past 3 years, 6 young people have been cast in Terriers, written by Maurice Bessman touring to schools and venues across the country. More recently working with Fury films, 120 young people aged 15 – 25 from across the city took part in audition workshops for the film of Terriers at Fire Fit in South Liverpool, MYA’s Space in Bootle and The Vibe in Huyton. 8 young people will be working with the Director to support the script development.
Mentoring This is a pilot programme supported by PH Holt Trust and Curious Minds – eight mentors from the creative industries have been paired with mentees – providing support, guidance and shadowing opportunities in acting, marketing, production, directing, writing, set design, and music skills. This talent development initiative will support eight young black, asian and minority artistes and creatives develop their skills as they progress through the industry.
Programming Our Boisterous Theatre strand of programming brought us a main house production of Bouncers, in August and September introducing four new actors to the main house stage – and new audiences to the theatre. The Alternative Black Cabaret Showcase – now a regular bi-monthly show presenting some of the best black comedians and singers on the circuit and with a platform to showcase emerging and existing local talent. Co-production with Red Ladder last September/October, with a cast of professional actors and 20 members of our community choir. Stagewrite – our new writing classes/workshops to encourage and support new writers to develop their work to full production. We continue on our journey with a number of other talent development initiatives in progress as a matter of priority to ensure we remain accessible, adaptable and continually listen and learn. It will take time and investment and with your continuing support for all we do. We will make a difference.
