Welcome to this performance of

YNWA

The Official History of Liverpool Football Club

Bill Shankly said: “I believe in is everybody working for the same goal and everybody having a share in the rewards. That’s how I see football, that’s how I see life” And theatre is like that. We’ve put a great team together who are going to play their hearts out for you. We have a great backline of musicians but they’re versatile. You’ll see them moving out of position and moving more to centre stage to deliver some lovely cameo performances. There is so much music in this show – well there had to be in a show about LFC, home of the most musical fans in sport and set in a city that has music so entwined in its history and its soul. So the captain for this match is Howard Gray our Musical Director. Just the man to lift the team when they need it. Not that they really do. And a big kop roar for Bob Eaton. First team coach and strategist who has led the squad through some testing training sessions.

This team of theatrical players is one of the most talented and hard working I have had the pleasure of putting together. They are versatile players taking up various positions and popping up when you don’t expect them (literally in one scene) to deliver a beautiful line. Throughout rehearsals I have watched this team play for each other. If ever there was a stage show that did theatre the way Liverpool do football, then this could be it. I’d like to think Bill Shankly would have been proud of how our talented and committed team play. I hope you will be.

A Message From Your Writer The only play I wanted to write at this moment in time was The History of Liverpool Football Club. After a tumultuous few years which included defeat in Athens, takeover upheaval, the setting up of The Supporters Union followed by demonstration and division, it seemed like the right time.120 years of highs and lows, the building of a bastion - and potentially the biggest football club in the World - this story has everything. The difficulty was always going to be: How do you tell it? With Liverpool having the most knowledgeable fans in the country every last one of them has a story to tell, and every one of them has the potential to tell the history of our club in their own way. Personally, I will be a Mad-Red till the day I die but, it is only when I look back that I realize what a fanatical Red-man I was. My fanaticism was cured by the club being hawked around and being leveraged by businessmen with no real feeling for what it meant to people, or what it was all about.

Thankfully, those days are way behind us. The new owners JW Henry and Tom Werner have gone about their business in the right way - The Liverpool Way. And, long may it continue. I feel we now have savvy owners who want to WIN! I’ve travelled to a few away games this season and they have felt a lot like ‘business as usual’. So, that is credit to the owners, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Ayre and now Brendan Rodgers and his team for dragging us right back on track,

and back in The Liverpool groove. I make no excuse for the fact that I am in love with our football club again, and hope that we never have to go through the uncertainty of the last few years ever again. I’ll end here by saying: Here’s to the new owners, no division amongst our Supporters, and new parties and stories of title and European Cup wins galore. When we all move together we are an unstoppable Red Machine. The rest of football knows this. It is why the Southern-biased media often invent negativity and division because, lets face it, the last thing

they want is another Liverpool team who dominate football. If the next 30 years are about to be like the last 30 then a new story will have to be written, and that is the story what we will always call ‘The Liverpool Way’. I hope this show shows our younger Supporters what it really means to be a “Liverpudlian”. The Reds are Coming Up The Hill Boys! YNWA Nicky Allt March 2014
